Read by students from more than 90 subscribing schools . Avg no. of readers per week: 33,276**. Average copies per issue: 45,314 (2012) Distributed free with The Straits Times every Monday to schools which subscribe to more than 50 copies of The Straits Times every week. IN represents Singapore's youth. It has a lot of information they need, on topics they care about. Their opinions count and they can be heard too. Entertaining and intellectually stimulating, IN is rich with news articles that are written from a young person’s perspective. It has its finger on the pulse on youth trends and features regular contributions from student writers. IN's product pitch - to educate, interest and engage the young in current affairs, news, and the English language, adding value to their general knowledge at school. IN Magazine - Meeting Readers’ Needs To engage more youths, IN looks at their online social networking trends, while offering them greater scope to develop their analytical skills through lesson activities pegged to the news. These elements are designed to prepare students for their ‘O’ and ‘N’ level English exams, and to improve their comprehension, reading, writing and oral abilities. The subscribing schools’ student readers automatically become part of The Straits Times Media Club, which meets frequently to learn reporting techniques, media literacy and understanding of the news business. Students who join the IN Crowd - its student council working closely with The Straits Times reporters, regularly contribute opinions and ideas to the magazine. In the classroom, IN is designed to add value to lessons, and an aid to teachers. IN THE SPOTLIGHT – Top entries for students’ photography, as well as a critique of their pictures from a Straits Times expert. IN DEPTH – Big youth trend story that anchors the magazine, on everything from growing pains to going green. IN - Editorial Content FOR TEACHERS Material in these pages, towards the end of the publication, will focus on using The Straits Times as an authentic source to prepare for exams, improve English and media literacy. LIT & LEARN– IN's resident teacher showcases extracts from poems, prose and plays while explaining literary techniques to readers. PERSONAL ASSETS - Articles rich in teaching points are examined through in-depth focus on values that develop character and citizenry in students. IN THE STRAITS TIMES – Timely, current events-based classroom lessons geared towards teaching media literacy, comprehension and using material based on the same-day Straits Times broadsheet. Targeted at helping students at a foundational and middle ability level. IN - Editorial Content FOR TEACHERS Material in these pages, towards the end of the publication, will focus on using The Straits Times as an authentic source to prepare for exams, improve English and media literacy. IN – Editorial Content FOR ALL IN is packed with features on topics that concern youths and issues they are interested in. Lesson activities are pegged to articles from The Straits Times to ground the students in current affairs knowledge. TRENDING NOW – Looks at what teens are doing online, the latest online trends and teenagers‘ opinions about them. It will also highlight a useful newly-released application or web site that is popular at the moment. IN FOR A CAUSE - Puts the focus on young people doing good in and out of Singapore, or new programmes that target raising awareness about a cause for or by young people. To cultivate social awareness and volunteerism in the young. IN THE ZONE – All about young people and their CCAs in school, to showcase their talent and issues outside of the academic environment. IN – Value Added Activities Media Club activities: Activities bring students into the newsroom to get insight to what journalism is. Students can glean writing, interviewing and photography tips from the journalists. Specialist workshops: Targeted workshops in areas such as photojournalism or editorial cartooning, to give students more hands-on exposure in journalism techniques. Teacher forums: Regular introduction workshops for teachers. Partners such as the British Council will conduct these workshops, showing teachers how to use the newspaper in the classroom and creative methods of teaching English. Learning journeys: Take the students outside the classroom to locations around Singapore. The objective is to bring topics such as national education to life for the students, who will have to complete an assignment at the end of the activity. The award is by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-Ifra). The award honours newspapers for outstanding marketing campaigns and community actions which engage the young. WAN-Ifra represents over 18,000 publications, 15,000 online sites and over 3,000 companies. In 2010, IN also garnered another ribbon in the ‘Newspapers In Education’ category, awarded by the World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-Ifra).
