Aaron Hale and his family get a place designed just for them By LAUREN DELGADO Northwest Florida Daily News S ANTA ROSA BEACH — As the front door swung open, Army Staff Sgt. Aaron Hale paused a moment on the stoop for his wife Kelly to peer into their new home. Kelly took in the new furniture and renovations, and a smile spread across her face. “Oh my gosh!” she said before clapping a hand over her mouth and wiping her feet on the new mat. “Everyone wiped their feet, right?” Aaron joked as he hurriedly wiped his own. Hundreds of friends, family, well-wishers and dignitaries from the military and local community welcomed the Hale family to their newly renovated, mortgage-free home Saturday, April 6. “This is the most beautiful crowd I have ever seen,” Kelly said minutes earlier. People began gathering outside the house Saturday morning, with shuttles bringing many them to Pelican Bay Drive in Santa Rosa Beach. nick tomecek | Daily News Above, Kelly Hale hugs Andy Pujol, president of Building Homes for Heroes, alongside her husband, Army See home page 4 Staff Sgt. (JRTC) On Jan. 23, the first group of Soldiers from 4th Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne) arrived at Fort Bliss as part of the Special Operations Task Force 74 (SOTF-74) to commence what turned out to be the largest combined pre-mission training exercise since 7th SFG (A) moved to Eglin Air Force Base. This was also the battalion’s first major training event since its activation on Sept. 28, 2012. A total of 877 Soldiers participated at various locations in Fort Bliss; Playas Training and Research Center, N.M.; and at the Joint Readiness Training Center, Fort Polk, La. (JRTC), for around 30 days. The training included the SOTF’s Headquarters, 12 of its Special Forces Operational Detachment- Alphas (SFODA), support Soldiers from the Group Support Battalion, three of the Group’s Multi-Purpose Canine Teams, Military Information Support Operation (MISO) teams from the 9th MISB at Fort Bragg, N.C., Civil Affairs (CA) teams from the 91st CA Battalion at Fort Bragg, Explosive Ordinance Disposal teams from the 756th at Fort Stewart, Ga., and the 748th at Fort Carson, Colo., Cross Functional Teams from the 1-26 Infantry and 2-2nd Infantry at Fort Knox, Ky., an Air Force Special Operations Weather Team (SOWT) from Hurlburt Field, a Joint Ex- deployment. Training included advanced shoot, move and communicate drills, live-fire exercises and counter-IED training. The teams also developed and refined their intercultural and interpersonal skills, language proficiency skills and Foreign Internal Defense essential tasks during the conduct of Village Stability Operations at the Playas Training and Research Center. During this essential part of the training, the teams established 12 Village Stability Platform sites, conducted over 46 key leader engagements, 15 Afghan shuras, and trained over 220 Afghan Local Police. Meanwhile, the Task Force staff maintained 24-hour operational battle tracking, reporting and operational support to its teams E FRE ING K PAR 2089337 Special Operations Task Force trains as they fight during exercise 157 Brooks St. SE, Fort Walton Beach, FL Bridal Luncheons • Rehersal Dinners • Unique Receptions Contact SF retired Spouse Find outSheila, more: [email protected] [email protected] Sheila Vaughen, SF retired spouse www.msom.uark.edu www.msom.uark.edu 2092989 2093148 2078562 Page | THE RED 7 | Friday, April 12, 2013 train From page 3 Spc. Combat operations were not the only focus of this training; the battalion support section provided over 40,000 meals to forwarded deployed teams at different training sites, delivered close to 20,000 gallons of fuel and distributed over 800,000 rounds of ammunitions. The maintenance section maintained, received, issued and turned-in over 1,077 pieces of equipment, spent over 2,400 man-hours on equipment maintenance and repair and provided 130 hours of driver’s training on a gambit of tactical vehicles. SOTF’s signal section proved to be one of the best in the Group at providing C4I to the Task Force by employing a wide range of command and control platforms. Some of these included Tactical Local Area Network, Blue Force Tracker, Command Post of the Future and other individual and teams’ organic communication platforms that the unit can expect to employ while supporting both United States Central Command and United States Southern Command theater security objectives. Enablers such as CA and MISO also provided invaluable expertise and knowledge essential to the battalion’s upcoming deployment. These teams along with the Special Forces Operational Detachment-Alphas conducted civil military operations and tactical radio station operations to identify and address the root causes of instability affecting each of the villages. They linked village-level leadership with sub-national level governance at the district and province. The Task Force premission training validation exercise exceeded the command’s expectations and brought the unit to the level of readiness needed to conduct combat operations in support of the battalion’s upcoming mission.
