Renee Harville, family support chairperson, presents a Bible to the Tammy Greene family (Mrs. Greene, Shanna, Michael, and Courtney) after the ceremony. LCHFH wishes to thank the volunteers and donors who contributed their time and talent to building this home. Prospective partner families are invited to call 463-8519 to inquire about the application process. LaGrange County Habitat for Humanity works in partnership with God and people everywhere to develop communities with God’s people in need, by building and renovating houses so that there are decent houses in decent communities in which people can live and grow into all God intended. Building Houses in Partnership With God’s People in Need Summer 2009 Harvey Lambright, sponsor of the 2nd annual golf tournament hands a check for $1,802.16 to Laura Hartman, volunteer for LaGrange County Habitat for Humanity, as Andy Peachey, event organizer, looks on. Second Annual Golf Outing The “first annual” golfers braved wind and cold, and the “second annual” golfers dodged raindrops. Despite the weather, this year’s outing, held on May 16, goes into the record books as the “second annual” success. Jeff Brill, Larry Hoffman, Kyle Miller, and Larry Miller posted the winning score of 65. Team Lambright took second place with a 66, and third place honors went to Team Keller with a 67. Closest to the Pin honJeff Brill, Larry Hoffman, ors were won Kyle Miller, and Larry Miller by Chris Perkins, while Dan Keller hit the Longest Drive, and Josh Landez drained the Longest Putt. Topper Knepp won the “Creamed Oppossum” award. The event raised $1,802.16 for LaGrange County Habitat for Humanity’s home-building projects. Many of the winning teams donated their cash prizes back to the organization, as did the drink cart girls with their tips. Cedar Lake golf course provided a grilled steak dinner and donated many rounds of golf as door prizes. Hole sponsors, also, played a big part in the success of the event. Thanks to Andy Peachey, to the volunteers, and, especially, to the umbrella-toting participants. LaGrange County Habitat for Humanity 109 E. Ronald Terwilliger, Habitat for Humanity International’s board chair, is making a legacy commitment of $100 million from his estate to Habitat for Humanity International. HFHI estimate that this gift, the largest from an individual in Habitat’s history, will help 60,000 families gain access to affordable housing. Within five years of the funds being transferred to HFHI, 70 percent will be distributed and used to improve housing conditions for people around the world by providing housing micro-financing. The remaining 30 percent will be used for the “J. Ronald Terwilliger Leveraged Impact Fund.” This endowment for Habitat for Humanity International will make annual distributions to help support HFHI’s affordable-housing ministry for years to come. Energy Star Rating Received LCHFH board members and volunteers are feeling a little starry-eyed these days. LCHFH has learned that its most recent home, completed in March, has been awarded an “energy star” rating—the first for LCHFH. Energy LCHFH Executive Director Mont Arnold Chek, an energy rating company from Kalamazoo, Michigan, partnered with LCHFH to provide this service and give the home 79 out of 85 on the Home Energy Rating System (HERS). LCHFH extends a big thanks to the construction team of loyal volunteers for their hard work and attention to detail. Energy-saving features of the home include a heat pump, an energy star rated gas hot water heater, an energy star rated dishwasher, additional insulation in the ceiling, taping all exterior joints, and sealing all infiltrations to the house. LCHFH plans to use this home as a model for future builds. With energy costs increasing, it is imperative that homes are built with energy saving features, and LCFHF will continue to investigate options in this area. We hope to see more stars in our future.
