July 2013 - Grapevine Christian Church

After a month at Grapevine, I have been amazed by how much we have already accomplished. If you didn’t know, we have a brand new, modern and slick website that was designed by Jonathon Taylor. I can’t tell you how important it is that our church has a high quality website. Studies tell us that 90% of people will visit our website before they visit our church. This means our first impression isn’t at the door but on the web. Nonetheless, we have and will be adding some new elements to our Sunday morning gatherings in order to help visitors feel more informed and comfortable. We want people to know that they are loved and welcomed. We also had the opportunity to have a booth at Friday Night Live in order to promote our church and Hay-Day VBS. We passed out 75 bottles of water, 75 popsicles, and 100 flyers. In addition, we were able to connect with allot of old members and expand our presence in the community. With 100+ churches, I believe we must be intentional with making our presence known and giving people a reason to check out Grapevine. Sometimes, this can be as simple as a presence at a big event or as intentional as community service projects. Nonetheless, the facts still remain true that most church growth comes through members inviting and investing in relationships. And so I challenge you to be continually intentional with inviting your friends, neighbors, co-workers and family members to visit Grapevine. To highlight a few other exciting things happening at Grapevine: after much discussion, we decided to replace our printer from 1999 with a new copier that will enable us to print high quality promotional materials, bulletins, etc. And the best part about this is that it won’t cost us any extra money in the long run! And this too will enable us to make more of an impression on potential visitors. We started a new group for the 20 something’s. Because of such a positive response, (13 people) they have decided to do a bi-weekly small group. I am looking forward to seeing what God will do in and through us in the months and years to come. Come Holy Spirit, Pastor Josh Lee July 1- 6 July 7-13 July 14-20 July 21-27 July 28-30 Walter Taylor Rolley Joslyn Wayne Eastridge Richard Pluimer Mike Marks Page 2 Servant of the Month Renea King Renea King has been attending Grapevine Christian Church for many years; However, Renea is not just a parishioner of the church, she is also the Custodian. Among her duties to the church, which includes cleaning the church on a weekly basis with extra cleaning as needed and hauling off the garbage, she also takes on the roll of making sure the van is ready for a trip, helps out whenever there is anything going on at the church, teaches Sunday School, ensures all of the church doors are closed and locked and all the lights turned out, waters the plants, keeps the Volunteers & Workers Greeters: Servers: Audio: James Margaret Richard Mike Willis Torry Darryl Baptistery ready to use, keeps the Sanctuary decorated, and participates in the Women’s Group. One person said that Renea is always smiling at you and that when she does, it’s hard to not talk with her about your day. Another person said Renea is always there and doing so much for the church that they couldn’t see anyone filling her shoes. Grapevine Christian Church would like to give Renea King a pat on the back and tell her Thank You for all the work she does. If anyone sees Renea, please stop and let her know she is doing a great job and show her how much we appreciate all that she does! We share a meal together, do a few ice-breakers and then dig into God’s Word in a small group setting. Our next meeting dates are scheduled for July 1st & 22nd and August 5th and 19th. Show-Me Trip The Show-Me Trip that was cancelled last month has been rescheduled for the week of July 8th through July 12th. Anyone who would like to attend, please contact Willis Holmes (821-0425) or Julie Melton (635-1628). Ladies Day Out Eat & Meet On Saturday, July 13th, all ladies are invited to Crofton to eat at HAWG HEAVEN. We will be taking the church van for anyone that wants a ride and we’ll leave the church parking lot at 11:30am. We’ll stop for lunch first and then we’ll travel to the Amish Store to shop for a bargain before returning to the church. SHHH! Don’t tell Pastor Josh… you know how excited he gets about a great bargain! He’ll stow away in the back of the van for sure! We always have a lot of fun when we have our Ladies Day Out. This is a perfect time to invite your mother, daughter, aunt, niece, sister, girlfriend, or neighbor to join us. We do need to let the restaurant know how many to expect so please contact Linnell (825-4198) or Margaret (821-3823) with your RSVP! If you won’t know until the last minute, don’t worry, we’ll make room for you! Thank You I would like to thank everyone who has given Leslie a graduation card, money or gift. Your kindness and generosity is very appreciated. I would like to give a big thank you to Jack and Judy for opening up their beautiful home. They always know how to go above and beyond in Christ love. Please continue to keep Leslie in your prayers as he prepares for college. -Renea King Madisonville 4th Fest From 6-9pm Christian artists will take the main stage at the city park to play at this year’s Madisonville 4th Fest “Praise in the Park” on July 2nd. Our praise team will play from 8-8:30pm For more information on the festivities, click here. Heaven Is For Real! Starting this month the children’s Sunday School classes will combine (4yr-5th grade) to learn that “Heaven is For Real!” This 13 week curriculum is based on Scripture about Heaven and will be taught by Renea King in the Rainbow Room down in the basement. If you are not sure about, or have trouble talking to your kids about Heaven, be sure to have them join the discussion every Sunday morning at 9:30am. New Clipboards As many of you may have noticed, the church now has new clipboards at both ends of each pew. We hope to get an accurate head count each Sunday morning, so we ask that everyone fill out the form. If you see a visitor, please direct them to a greeter so they can receive a gift bag as well. We would like to welcome everyone to our church family! Kid’s Movie Day On Thursday, July 18th, the children’s ministry would like to invite those who are 4 years to 5th grade to join them to see the movie Horton Hears a Who. We will be taking the church van for anyone that wants a ride. Departure time will be 9:00am. Or you can meet the crew at the Capital 8 theater in Madisonville at 9:15am. More details to come. Publication Deadlines Information for the weekly bulletin needs to be in by Friday morning. Information for the monthly newsletter needs to be in before the end of the month. In July we send our Christmas/Birthday gifts to Verlina in order for them to arrive by December. If you would like to participate in this gift giving, here are a few tips: • • Fellowship at Murray & Western • Christian Church • • Children’s Home • Show-Me Christian Youth • Co-Op Ministry & Food • • Bank • Salvation Army • • • • Birthdays & Anniversaries 5 5 12 13 14 14 15 19 24 31 Weston Williams Shirley Cates Billie Wilson Avery Justice Jacob Melton Yater Anniversary Paul Holmes Melissa Head Rockie Head Jesse/Olivia Holmes Girls do NOT wear slacks or shorts. Skirts or dresses are fine. Flip Flops or canvas shoes are acceptable. Her feet may be wide, so purchase accordingly. The gifts must fit into a shoe-box size package and we can only send 2 boxes. Each box requires $5 to offset the shipping fee. Haitian little girls enjoy many of the same things that American little girls enjoy. Brightly colored barrettes, hair ribbons, dolls, pencils, tablets, school supplies, jump ropes, jacks & ball, other small toys and games, sidewalk chalk… you get the idea. We can also send extra money that will benefit her entire family. If someone would like to purchase a Bible for Verlina, money can be sent for that. Money can also be designated for a mattress and bed. Please do NOT gift wrap the items. They must be able to check them at customs. Please do NOT send anything that might melt in the Haitian heat or bottles/tubes that might get punctured during transport! Please DO pray for Verlina, her family, and the mission as you select the gifts. There will be a display at the back of the church for your gifts. If you would like to donate money, please give it to Margaret Wooton or Linnell Sorrells. There will also be more “size” information at the display to assist you with shopping. Please have your gifts at the church no later than Sunday, July 21st, so that we are able to package and ship them prior to the end of the month. These will be the only gifts Verlina will receive, so please be generous. If you would like more information about Lifeline Christian Mission, please visit their website at www.lifeline.org. Blessings. Page 5 Church Website (by: Jonathan Taylor) In case you weren’t at church last Sunday, we have a brand-new website! (By the way: if you weren’t there, you can watch the sermon on the website!) It has actually been live for about two weeks now, but it’s new regardless. I just wanted to take a little bit of time to go over some of the best parts of it. If you go to grapevinechristian.com, the first thing you’ll likely notice is a large slider promoting what’s going on here at Grapevine. At the top are 5 navigational tabs where you can learn more about the church, catch up on the latest sermon, and see more details about upcoming events. There is also a link to Pastor Josh’s blog, where he writes about various things. Aside from all the new features on the website, our new website is also smart phone compatible, so when you load it on a phone, it optimizes all the content for your phone instantly! It’s pretty cool. I can’t give it justice just trying to describe it to you, so go check it out! Prayer Requests No one should have to suffer through life’s challenges alone. Anxiety often accompanies the trials we face. And here at Grapevine we want to help by partnering with you in prayer and doing our best to help meet your needs. We are one big family at Grapevine and when one of us suffers we all suffer. Please give us the opportunity to journey through life’s challenges with you. Two Ways to Submit Your Prayer Request 1. Call Judy Holt (270-339-0587) or Pastor Josh (224-856-8543) 2. E-mail to [email protected] 3. Write the request on a prayer card located on the back table in the auditorium and place it in the prayer box or mark the “check here” section of the attendance sheet and someone will call you. THINGS TO REMEMBER: • Please indicate if you wish to have your request in the bulletin and/or the prayer chain. • All bulletin requests will be taken down after 4 Sundays unless the church office hears otherwise. • If you are calling about someone who is in the hospital and would like a visit please provide the person’s name, their hospital or care facility, and the dates they are expected to be there. • Any other request, please let us know as much or as little information as you desire. The hardest part is learning to forgive that person. Forgiveness isn’t saying that everything that person did was alright, but it is giving up our right to get revenge and even the score. We are all holding rocks and ready to cast our stones at those who’ve hurt us. If we don’t learn to forgive we only become bitter and defensive. Christ wants to help us drop our stones of guilt, judgment and revenge. Be sure to join us for a 7 week series entitled: “Drop Your Stones.” Anyone 25 years or older is invited to attend a 7 Week Small Group at Pastor Josh’s home. This group will meet Sunday nights at 6:30pm and will serve as an extended study alongside our summer series on forgiveness “Drop Your Stone.” Forgiveness is the issue that prevents believers from breaking addictions, experiencing peace and hearing God’s voice. You would be amazed by how much we have going on in our hearts that God so desperately wants to restore. Please don’t miss the opportunity to go deeper into God’s Word and our own hearts.
