In 1918, François André set up the Haussmann gaming circle in Paris and continued to grow his business by designing the La Baule resort based on the Deauville model and by purchasing the Hôtel Royal and casino in 1923. He invented the modern day resort concept by combining casinos, luxury hotels and sports facilities all on one site. In 1926, François André took on the construction of the Hôtel Hermitage at La Baule, and in 1927, he took over from Eugène Cornuché as managing director of SHCD (Société des Hôtels et Casino de Deauville). He then had the Hôtel du Golf in Deauville built. In 1926, François André also acquired Société Fermière du Casino Municipal de Cannes (SFCMC) and a controlling stake in the Hôtel Majestic in Cannes buying the remaining equity in 1952. Lucien Barrière: Groupe Lucien Barrière’s founding and development throughout France 1951-1990 In 1951, Lucien Barrière, François André’s nephew, joined the Group. In 1957 Lucien Barrière was appointed to the Board of several of the Group’s entities and became his uncle’s sole legal heir in 1961. He undertook a project to modernise and develop the Group by buying new establishments in Trouville, Dinard, St-Malo, Royan and Enghien-les-Bains. He also added two extra floors to the Majestic in 1965 in Cannes. In 1980, SHCLB (Société Hôtelière de la Chaîne Lucien Barrière) was founded to cover the La Baule hotels and casinos. In 1987, Lucien Barrière participated in the arrival of slot machines. Diane Barrière-Desseigne: the Barrière legend blossoms 1990-2000 In the early 1990’s, Accor became a major SHCLB shareholder. In 1990, Diane BarrièreDesseigne succeeded her father, Lucien Barrière, and launched major renovation projects. On top of their prestige, the hotels are closely connected to the film industry and the Arts. The elite figures of the film industry visit the Normandy Barrière and the Royal Barrière during the American Film Festival in Deauville, while the Majestic Barrière in Cannes has been catering for the International Film Festival for decades. In 1991, SFCMC grew by purchasing the Hôtel Gray d’Albion in Cannes. In 1995, Diane Barrière-Desseigne suffered a very serious plane accident and from 1997, her husband Dominique Desseigne co-managed the SHCD and SHCLB at her side. In 1998, SHCD bought Fouquet’s restaurant and brand. In Cannes, the Majestic Barrière was renovated and extended in 1999. Diane Barrière-Desseigne sadly passed away in 2001. Dominique Desseigne took over Group management and became Chairman of SFCMC. 5 1 • A family history Since 1997 With Dominique Desseigne, SHCD and SHCLB took on a new dimension with the first international developments. The Casino Barrière de Montreux opened in 2003, and became the leading casino in Switzerland in 2008. In 2004, the Desseigne-Barrière family, Accor and Colony Capital investment funds decided to team up as SHCLB, renamed Groupe Lucien Barrière, which combined the businesses of SHCD, SHCLB and Accor Casinos to create a prestigious casino and hotel group excluding SFCMC*. Since 2005, the expansion has continued with the opening of casinos in Toulouse, Cairo, Leucate, Blotzheim, Lille, the opening of Hôtel Fouquet’s Barrière in Paris, the Naoura Barrière in Marrakech (Morocco) and the Spark (fitness centre, beauty treatments, sport and Spa) in Enghien-les-Bains. The Hôtel-Casino Barrière Lille opened in September 2010, and the adjoining hotel complex and balneotherapy centre at the Casino Barrière de Ribeauvillé is forecast to open late in 2011. On 15th April 2009, Colony Capital sold its Groupe Lucien Barrière shares to Accor, which now holds a 49% equity stake in the company. In May 2010, Groupe Lucien Barrière and Française des Jeux designed an on-line gaming platform with 3D online gaming, which is called LB Poker company. Dominique Desseigne is today chairman of the Groupe Lucien Barrière Supervisory Board backed by increased powers under the articles of association, and chairs the Group’s Strategy & Heritage Committee. He is also chairman of SFCMC (Société Fermière du Casino Municipal de Cannes*). The family controls Groupe Lucien Barrière (51%), and has a controlling stake of over 70% in SFCMC*. * The Cannes resort - the Majestic Barrière and the Gray d'Albion hotels, the Barrière Croisette and Barrière Les Princes casinos are not legally part of Groupe Lucien Barrière SAS, but are connected to the Group by commercial agreements involving the Group providing technical assistance to the casinos. The buildings are owned by SFCMC, in which the Desseigne-Barrière family has a 70% controlling stake. Dominique Desseigne is the chairman. 6 2 • The four Groupe Lucien Barrière divisions The professionalism and impeccable service of over 6,600 employees are two of Groupe Lucien Barrière’s main assets. Regular, systematic procedures keep quality high and the involvement of all staff ensures best practices are shared between them. Groupe Lucien Barrière offers a wide range of attractive, stable jobs that are open to all regardless of qualifications and experience: jobs in the luxury hotels and casinos themselves, or catering, tennis and golf, spa treatments and wellbeing and entertainment organisation… The Human resources’ dynamic policy gives priority to employee promotion and professional mobility. All the slot machines in the casino were fitted with the system. Since then, TITO has been implemented in six other casinos (Enghien-les-Bains, Lille, Nice, Ribeauvillé, Toulouse and Sainte-Maxime). The Barrière Casinos in Switzerland were the first to experiment with player tracking, and the Barrière Casinos in France were the first to set up electronic poker and English roulette tables. With a view to safeguarding customer relations and in accordance with the Group’s ethics policies, Groupe Lucien Barrière has adopted an innovative responsible gaming policy, which gives customers the option to voluntarily apply for limited access to casinos (“LCA”). And in certain casinos, they can always apply to a responsible gaming supervisor to help them in their attempts to overcome their gambling addiction. Gaming staff in contact with customers are trained to detect gambling problems and a special website about Responsible Gaming is now on-line.
