It exists to provide the People of God the pastoral care and spiritual nourishment they need to proclaim the good news of Christ in their lives and to the world. Our Response to God’s Call (The St. Joseph Parish Vision Statement) St. Joseph Parish is a community of God’s People empowered by the Holy Spirit to promote God’s reign in the world. Nourished by Word and Sacrament, we will grow together in faith, hope, and in a passionate love of God and neighbor. In our families, we will teach and learn the love of Jesus Christ. In our various occupations we will make decisions and set priorities in accordance with the values of the Gospel. And in the world around us we will stand always for justice, compassion and peace. Sacraments Baptisms: We celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism every Sunday. Parents are required to attend a Baptismal formation meeting. Baptisms are scheduled at this meeting. Its message of hope sustains us throughout the forty days of prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. With Peter, James, and John, we are invited to ascend the mountain of revelation with Jesus and to glimpse the glory of divinity hidden within his humanity. We, like them, cannot remain on the mountain for long. But we take heart, knowing that the saving power of God is transforming us each day into the glorious image of Christ. May this Lent help us appreciate this wonder with gratitude and awe. (Daily Prayer 2016) And so, when we come down from the mountain, we continue the work of the Lord. Our forty days of the intensified practices of prayer, fasting and almsgiving – and these are a part of the Christian life all year long! - should ground us even more in the awareness of God’s mercy. Our sincere prayer keeps the needs of others before us; Our consistent fasting helps us realize that we need far less than we seem to think; and Our almsgiving teaches us that we have far more to share than we ever imagined. In this season of Lent, a season of preparation for initiation and renewal, please remember those adults who will be journeying to the font for Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil, our young people preparing to celebrate Confirmation on March 11, and our young children preparing for First Eucharist in the spring. May all of us grow in the spirit of Jesus who has led the way for us from death to life! Joyfully in Christ, Father John Phan STEWARDSHIP 2016 CATHOLIC MINISTRIES ANNUAL APPEAL Please Participate! Second Sunday in Lent In today’s second reading we learn that one of Saint Paul’s principles of Christian living is to watch and imitate other followers of Christ. There is a pattern for Christian living that Saint Paul wants others to discover and then imitate. This pattern includes a life of prayer, selflessness, sacrifice, and caring for others, including our family of faith. Good stewards choose their friends wisely. They cultivate friendships with other Christian stewards, spend time with them, observe how they live, ask questions about their faith and learn from them. Who are your friends? Are they good stewards of their faith? Are they those who can help you on your own journey of faith? Direction The great thing in this world is not so much where we are, but in what direction we are going. —Oliver Wendell Holmes Manna Gift Cards Do you have any of the following events coming up soon Baptism, Communion, Confirmation, birthday, get well wish, or Easter baskets? Then we shall see God “face to face,” “as he is.” So faith is already the beginning of eternal life: When we contemplate the blessings of faith even now, as if gazing at a reflection in a mirror, it is as if we already possessed the wonderful things which our faith assures us we shall one day enjoy. Now, however, “we walk by faith, not by sight”; we perceive God as “in a mirror, dimly” and only “in part.” Even though enlightened by him in whom it believes, faith is often lived in darkness and can be put to the test. The world we live in often seems very far from the one promised us by faith. Our experiences of evil and suffering, injustice, and death, seem to contradict the Good News; they can shake our faith and become a temptation against it. It is then we must turn to the witnesses of faith: to Abraham, who “in hope... believed against hope”; to the Virgin Mary, who, in “her pilgrimage of faith,” walked into the “night of faith” in sharing the darkness of her son’s suffering and death; and to so many others: “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith.” The Catechism of the Catholic Church FEED YOUR SPIRIT Tuesday Night with the Sisters An Invitation from Fr. So many stars! Too many to count. That is the un-numberable number of Abram’s descendants – of which each of us is a part. God promised then, and promises still today in covenantal love and mercy to care for us, protect us, and be our only God. This Lent, let us go looking for descendant stars, people born of Abraham and Sarah and loved by God. Let us go looking for those who need embracing. Let us go looking for those who need some special care, some covenantal kindness, many kind words. Let us look. Then let us act. Gospel of Luke 13:1-9 February 28 Some people told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with the blood of their sacrifices. Jesus said to them in reply, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were greater sinners than all other Galileans? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did! Or those eighteen people who were killed when the tower at Siloam fell on them— do you think they were more guilty than everyone else who lived in Jerusalem? By no means! But I tell you, if you do not repent, you will all perish as they did!” And he told them this parable: “There once was a person who had a fig tree planted in his orchard, and when he came in search of fruit on it but found none, he said to the gardener, ‘For three years now I have come in search of fruit on this fig tree but have found none. So cut it down. Why should it exhaust the soil?’ He said to him in reply, ‘Sir, leave it for this year also, and I shall culƟvate the ground around it and ferƟlize it; it may bear fruit in the future. If not you can cut it down.’” Pray for the Sick Robert Curran, Charlotte Kulaga, Tony Lewis, Gertrude McGarry, Colleen Morrison, Dennis Pallecone, Helen Pindel, Michael Scallon, and Cary White St. Joseph Parish Community would like to recognize and remember in prayer, all active duty military personnel serving our country here and throughout the world.
