“Life After Loss” Seminar
The St. Luke Parish Grief Group is offering a 7-week seminar
for anyone who has had a loved one die within the last two
years. Participants need not be a member of St. Luke parish
or have a church affiliation. The sessions will take place on
Thursday evenings, beginning Oct. 23rd, from 7-9 p.m. in the
St. Luke Parish Center (across from the church).
Preregistration is suggested. For further information, please

Dear Friends,
Today, you should notice something new in our church.
You may recall that several months ago Father Cleaveland spoke
of purchasing artwork for the church, including the opportunity
for all of us to provide our input. This painting, Adoration of the
Shepherds by Gerrit Van Honthorst, was the final selection.
Father Cleaveland ordered this himself in the summer and made
all the arrangements for framing and hanging before he left.
As we unrolled the painting when it arrived, and then
again as I pondered it as it was hung in the church, I was struck
by how fitting it is to include this image of the Christ-child in
our church. This infant was the not the King that the people were
expecting or even hoping for. Art historians talk about the
powerful use of light in this depiction of the nativity. In this
image, the only source of light is the Christ child himself, small,
humble and quiet. As Mary lovingly unveils the infant, Jesus, St.
Joseph calmly looks on in wonder and awe. The shepherds
demonstrate a range of responses from grieved reverence, to
excitement and surprise. Notice how one shepherd is pointing as
if leading the newly arrived visitor to Christ. As this image so
powerfully demonstrates, Jesus is the source of all light – and He
is our source of light still, in a world that can sometimes seem
dark and uncaring.
I hope that this image will inspire you to take time to
reflect and pray about who Christ is in your life, and how you
can share His light with others.

P.S. I have been asked about the plan for bulletin columns going
forward. Fr. Rowan and I have agreed that we will alternate
writing them. Generally, Father Rowan will focus on liturgy and
scripture, and my focus will be on parish life.

Honthorst was a Dutch painter.
He spent time in Rome early in
his career and was heavily
influenced by Caravaggio. The
original of this painting hangs
in the Wallraf-Richartz Museum
in Cologne, Germany.

Thank you to all who attended and helped with last
Wednesday’s Potluck—it was a huge success! Over 50
people enjoyed good food and lively conversation
before our faith formation programs began at 6:30! We
will meet again this coming Wednesday, 10/15, and all
are welcome!
Sacramental Preparation Classes meet again this week,
along with Kids’ Club and Faith Foundations / RCIA.
Please join us!
Women’s Book Group will meet on Monday,
October 20th in the Brannan House. We will be
discussing Chapter 3 of “The Joy of the Gospel”
by Pope Francis. Contact the parish office for
more information or to get a copy of the book.
Men’s Group—Meets Thursday mornings at 6:45am in the
Church followed by discussion of this week’s Gospel and a
