Genesis 2:5–7 5 When no bush of the field was yet in the land
and no small plant of the field had yet sprung up—for the
LORD God had not caused it to rain on the land, and there
was no man to work the ground, 6 and a mist was going up
from the land and was watering the whole face of the ground— 7 then the LORD
God formed the man of dust from the ground and breathed into his nostrils the
breath of life, and the man became a living creature.
Job 38:34–36 34 “Can you [Job] lift up your voice to the clouds, that a flood of
waters may cover you? 35 Can you send forth lightnings, that they may go and say to
you, ‘Here we are’? 36 Who has put wisdom in the inward parts or given
understanding to the mind?
Many of you know that at the beginning of the year I make a reading list. It’s
somewhat malleable, but I try to read 2-3 books every month throughout the year …
in addition to my devotional Bible reading and the normal reading I do to prepare
sermons. It’s a discipline I picked up in seminary since I’m not a “natural reader.”
What I mean is that I’m not naturally drawn to books the way some of my friends
and family are. (I have a cousin who is now a published fiction author. When we
were young, she would spend most of our family Christmas and Thanksgiving
gatherings in another room, reading a book! These were not assigned books … she
just read because she naturally loved reading! It was part of her personality.)
This year, I’ve decided to read and re-read C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series.
I’ve read a number of the books already … some as a child, a few as an adult … but
never in any systematic, orderly way. So this year, I’ve set out to read them “in
order.”
If you know the Chronicles of Narnia, you know that’s a somewhat controversial
statement because there’s a good deal of debate about what the order should be!
Some insist that “in order” means the order in which they were published (beginning
with The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe) … while others insist that one should
follow the “chronological” order (beginning with The Magician’s Nephew). For his
part, C.S. Lewis was somewhat ambivalent … though in a letter he wrote to a child
who wanted him to settle the argument, Lewis suggested that it was probably better
to read them in chronological order. (He explained that when he wrote the “first
book” … The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe … he didn’t know if there would be
any other books!)
Why would I read the Chronicles of Narnia? There are a number of reasons. For
one thing, I’m naturally drawn to non-fiction books. I like to read about ideas …
theological ideas, politics, economics, sociology. That’s good, but I think I need to
read more fiction. Fiction is important because it engages not only our intellects, but
our imaginations. We need to read more stories. (Jesus knew that well, of course!
That’s why he told so many parables.)

For another thing, I think it’s good to read some of the same books your children are reading. Lily and Jack are
now in third grade … and they’re beginning to ask exciting new questions about God, the world, and their place
in it. They’re beginning to see themselves as citizens of “two kingdoms” (what Augustine called “the city of
God” and the “city of man.”) … and they’re trying to figure out what it means to live as children of God in the
“already / not-yet” kingdom. They need to have conversations about big things. Books are good jumping-off
points for some of those deeper discussions.
Perhaps the biggest reason I’m reading the Chronicles of Narnia this year is that I love the way C.S. Lewis
captures rich theological themes in new ways! To put it another way, I love the way he paints pictures with
words … but I also love the pictures he paints with his words. In the Magician’s Nephew, for example, Lewis
tells the story of the creation of Narnia. In the story, Aslan the Lion (the Christ-figure in the series), speaks
creation into existence … and as I read it, I found myself moved to tears. There were goose-bumps on my arm!
Let me give you a small sample …
In the darkness something was happening at last. A voice had begun to sing. It was very far away and Digory
[the young boy in the story] found it hard to decide from what direction it was coming. Sometimes it seemed to
come from all directions at once. Sometimes he almost thought it was coming out of the earth beneath them.
Its lower notes were deep enough to be the voice of the earth herself. There were no words. There was hardly
even a tune. But it was, beyond comparison, the most beautiful noise he had ever heard. It was so beautiful he
could hardly bear it …. The blackness overhead, all at once, was blazing with stars. They didn’t come out
gently one by one, as they do on a summer evening. One moment there had been nothing but darkness; next
moment a thousand points of light leaped out – single stars, constellations, and planets, brighter and bigger
than any in our world. There were no clouds. The new stars and the new voices began at exactly the same
time. If you had seen and heard it, as Digory did, you would have felt quite certain that it was the stars
themselves who were signing, and that it was the First Voice, the deep one, which had made them appear and
made them sing.
It’s an amazing story! As I recount it to you, I can’t help thinking about Psalm 19:1 – “The heavens declare the
glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.” What a thought … that God sang the world into
existence! Whether or not God sang or spoke … it’s an evocative image because while “speaking” creation into
existence captures the scientific precision of the creative act, “singing” captures God’s creativity and imagination.
The Chronicles of Narnia is filled with imagery like this. (Perhaps the most moving is the death and resurrection
of Aslan in The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe.) I’m so glad God gave us these books! I’m so glad that C.S.
Lewis loved Jesus, his church … and children. What a gift! I can’t wait to meet Lewis in heaven and tell him
how much I love his writing. (My guess is that there will be a long line … but it is eternity, after all. I can wait.)
There’s more to be said, of course, but I’ll leave it at that! If you’re not reading your Bible, please start there!
The Bible is the word of God. The Bible has the unique ability to change your life. The Bible is the greatest
story ever told, and when you find yourself in it … a fallen sinner, redeemed by the sinless Son of God, destined
for a new / resurrection life in the Holy Spirit … you will be transformed! (To use Jesus’ words from John 3 …
you’ll be “born again.”)
But I think it’s also worthwhile to pick up some good Christian fiction. If you’d like to read the Chronicles of
Narnia with me … I’d love that! If the Chronicles of Narnia aren’t really your cup of tea, maybe you could pick
up a classic allegory like John Bunyan’s Pilgrim’s Progress. If you’d like something a bit more modern, perhaps
you could check out some of Marilynne Robinson’s books. If you’re already a bibliophile, you might want to
check out a classic like Dostoevsky’s The Karamazov Brothers or Les Miserables by Victory Hugo. If you’re a
parent and want some help getting started with some children’s books, you can join us for Thursday Morning
Story Time at Pinewoods. Some of our young parents are reading Kevin DeYoung’s The Biggest Story with
Brenden and Ashley Camp.
Again, there’s only one GOOD BOOK (capital G, capital B) … and that’s the Bible! But there are a lot of good
books out there too … books that will help you see the contours of God’s steadfast love and faithfulness in new,
exciting ways! Have good reading … and may God bless you richly in Christ!

avid and Marcia serve in a sensitive ministry.
David begins his latest newsletter with the account of an experience he recently had at a mosque in his area:
“A Muslim friend of mine was giving a talk in a local mosque last month which included a few points about
Jesus. I had the opportunity with other Christians and Muslims to hear his explanation of what Muslims
think of Jesus and his return to earth to usher in the Last Days. Yes, Muslims believe in Jesus and his second
coming but sadly the Jesus they believe in is not the Jesus of the Bible nor is his second coming based on
teaching from the Scriptures. Here is what he said,
“We Muslims believe in the Prophet Jesus. I love him, I love him, I love him…..He will come back and when
he comes back I will hug him and I will kiss his hands.”
As I was listening to him I felt deep sadness for him and his family. His father had converted from Christianity to
Islam. He now thinks that he is honoring Jesus but in fact is denying the very essence of who Jesus is and what he
came to do. Jesus is no more than a prophet like Moses and Abraham and Muhammad according to my friend and
the teachings of Islam. Also the return of Jesus is so very distorted in Islam. Listen what Muslims believe about the
return of Jesus:
“The Prophet said: Jesus will descend (to the earth). When you see him, recognize him: a man of medium
height, reddish hair, wearing two yellow garments. He will fight the people for the cause of Islam. He will
break the cross and kill the pigs….Allah will perish all religions except Islam. Jesus will destroy the
Antichrist and will live on the earth for forty years and then he will die…” (Hadith: Abu Dawud 37,
Number 4310, Narrated by Abu Huraira)
Notice that the Islamic Jesus will return to bring Islam to all areas of the world and then he will die. What is even
sadder to me is that during the talk he said Jesus was never crucified, but God took him to heaven before the
crucifixion and placed someone else on the cross. The person who died on a cross is not mentioned in the Quran,
but Muslims have proposed a Roman soldier, or a disciple of Jesus or Judas Iscariot or even Satan. As you are well
aware, Muslims detest the cross and what it stands for. Muslims are rejecting the very heart of our faith: the death
and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ that brings us into a personal relationship with God by having our sins,
our guilt and shame taken away from us and placed on Christ.
My friends, Muslims need to know the real Jesus, the Jesus who is both God and man who came into this world to
deal with our sin and rebellion against the Holy God. What is to be our response to what Muslims believe and to
what we see happening today in the Muslim world? We as God’s people must pray for them and speak the truth
of Jesus to them.”
Please pray for:
 The Bible studies among the three Persians who are open to knowing about the Lord Jesus. We meet every
Sunday after church.
 Pray for the Lunchtime Talks in the city center. Every Tuesday a 25 minute talk is given from a passage of
Scripture to those who are free during their lunch hour.
 Pray for R., G and Richard who have been coming regularly to hear the messages. I have been able to meet
with each of them individually to share from the Scriptures as well.
 Pray for the English classes that Marcia helps teach. Women from Iran, Somalia, Poland, Japan, Iraq and
other countries come to learn English and hear a story from the Bible.
 Pray for JC who is from a Muslim background but has been following Christ for a couple of years. He and his

wife and family have been going through difficulties spiritually and as a family. They have not been to
church for about 2 months. Please pray for spiritual hunger in their hearts. Pray that they will see that God is
the one who will bring them peace and contentment in hard times. Pray that they will not hide from their
brothers and sisters in Christ but return to the fellowship of a caring family.
 Pray for the International Café. We had eight visitors last week. To my knowledge none of them are
followers of Jesus. Each week we drink tea or coffee and chat about their lives and seek to listen and help
them to adapt to a new culture and language. But most of all we are introducing them to the claims of Christ.
 Pray for the night shelter that has two more nights at our church. We have about 11-13 beds in the church for
the homeless. Please do pray for God to work in their hearts and minds.
 Continue to pray for the booktable ministry. Sometimes the weather is not good but when we are able to
meet outdoors we are having conversations with people from many different nations. Last Saturday I talked
with a Muslim who had come from a very nominal Christian background. He believes the Bible is corrupted
so God brought a new book in the Quran. Of course there is no evidence that the Bible is corrupted, but he
has been told that over and over again by Muslims at the mosque. Please pray that God will begin to break
down the barriers that keep him from seeing the truth of who Jesus is.
Thank you for all your prayers and support over these many years. Marcia and I appreciate you all very much for
serving with us in this ministry among unreached peoples.

lay and Darlene Quarterman serve with the Evangelical Reformed Seminary of Ukraine.
Clay and Diane are based in Jackson, MS, during their current Home Ministry as assignment. So far they
have visited supporters in New Mexico, Arizona, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Texas. They will
continue traveling to churches across the Southeast for the next few weeks, with plans to return to Ukraine on May 5th.
While at home in Jackson, MS during their HMA, the Quartermans have experienced some challenges – personal
illness, flood damage to their home and mold remediation to their heating system, and also some blessed times
including the baptism of their youngest grandchild and the celebration of Clay’s mother’s 93rd birthday.
Clay returned to Kiev in March to teach the ERSU seminary Leadership course for two weeks. It was exciting for
him to see several seniors preparing to graduate, resulting in more Ukrainian leaders in the ministry. Interest in the
ERSU seminary continues to grow across Ukraine and in neighboring countries.
Clay recently finished a 30-page article on "Submission, Collaboration, and the End of War" for ERSU’s
theological journal. They pray this conflict with Russia will end, but they acknowledge that God even uses these
conflicts to do his work in people's lives -- no matter what the human outcome may be.
Clay is also working on Christian Education efforts across several denominations. He is gathering resources and
developing a website, discovering gifted teachers, writing curricula, and planning future seminars.
PRAY for:
 Lasting Peace in Ukraine.
 Focus and safety for our students.
 The building program at ERSU, particularly the search for dormitory facilities.
 ERSU student Andrei Mikityuk, who has been called up in the draft.
PRAISE:
 Sergei Kulesh, an ERSU seminary student/soldier has just been taken off the front lines, where he has been
clearing Russian land mines!

In this month’s newsletter U.S. Navy Commander Todd Orren, chaplain at N.A.S. Pensacola, provides some
insight to the duties and challenges of a PCA chaplain ministering to the U.S. Armed Forces. Pinewoods Church is
blessed to have the Orren family worship with us while they are stationed in Pensacola.

Todd’s insights on the chaplaincy:
The work of military chaplains is much like that of civilian pastors. Seminary-educated and ordained, chaplains
preach sermons, offer comfort, teach Bible studies, provide counseling, and lead people to the Lord. Yet they differ
from their civilian brothers in one distinct way: they work in a religiously-diverse environment. Unlike a church
pastor they may be on a staff with a Rabbi, priest or Imam. They also work close by in the field, on ships, in offices,
in military hospitals, and in basic-training schools. They serve side by side with enlisted personnel, and, thereby,
have unique opportunities to influence and change lives. They are often on-hand at times when these men and
women are hurting and most receptive to the Gospel message.
There has been much talk of military chaplains being persecuted for their faith with the repeal of don’t ask don’t
tell, but I have not felt that way at all. We do minister in a sinful environment. That has not changed. I preach the
gospel the same as I would at a PCA church when I preach at chapel. The military has changed with our society but
the Good News still stays the same.
I have had some challenges in my career. I remember my first duty station at the Hospital in Jacksonville, FL. I was
asked to do a joint communion service with a female chaplain. I called my endorsing agent for the PCA and asked
for some help. I ended up telling her I could just do the whole service by myself. Sometimes, it can get interesting
in the Chaplain Corps but our faithful God still takes care of us. I find the ministry in the Navy to be very exciting.
I have been underway on Cruisers, Submarines and Aircraft Carriers; I have ministered in the Philippines, Korea,
Japan, Mongolia and Alaska; I have flown in FA-18s, EA-6Bs and various Helicopters. I go where our Navy and
Marines go and the opportunities are vast.
Please pray for all of our military chaplains for strength in ministry, faithfulness to the Gospel, love for God’s
people.

For many, FEBC broadcasts are their first and only exposure to the hope of Jesus
Christ. For others who don’t own a Bible, it’s the only way to grow in their faith. In
addition, relationships are the heart of our ministry. With Christ as our model, FEBC
builds long-lasting and deep relationships with their listeners (phone calls, emails,
letters and personal visits), local pastors, and even with governments (some of them
hostile to Christianity, but not always to FEBC). For 70 years, FEBC has been
committed to one thing: Sharing Christ with the world.
FEBC broadcasts are heard in 100 languages and 40 countries around the world aired
from 147 stations and transmitters, totaling 770 hours of programming a day/365
days a year. But numbers only tell part of the story. Far more important are the lives impacted by a global radio
network that shares the Good News of Jesus Christ with a potential listening audience of 3 billion people. FEBC
knows listeners are tuning in, because of the many text messages, emails, phone calls, letters and visits they receive.
In 2014 alone, FEBC heard from over 2 million listeners, many of who attested to changed lives. The common
thread running through these responses is hope found in Christ, a hope that is transforming lives. And these numbers
don’t even include the tens of thousands of listeners who respond through the FEBC website (www.febc.org) and
social media.
Committed to reaching the remote, FEBC has been training and using indigenous programmers for many years,
for the purpose of reaching people in their native language. More than two thirds of FEBC’s total programming is
delivered by nationals in 81 different ethnic languages. Regardless of the language, radio is an excellent way to
reach people in almost any location or circumstance. It not only breaks the barrier of illiteracy for those who cannot
read, it’s the perfect vehicle for those living in cultures and countries that oppose Christianity. While someone
seeking to know more about Christ from a Buddhist or Muslim culture would be reluctant to open their door to a
Christian, they would privately listen to a radio or Internet program in their quest for the truth.
Let’s take another look at these statistics:

March 22nd, 2016: We just learned that our team in China has produced a micro-SD card that contains 50 hours of
Gospel programming in the Yunnan dialect that can be played on an MP3 player or smartphone. The Yunnan language
is spoken by many ethnic groups in southern China. Pray for a wide distribution and subsequent response by listeners.
March 20th, 2016: Praise God for 800 radios that were distributed in Murun City, Mongolia late last year! Pray that
listeners will tune in and hear the Good News. Pray, too, for the 3,000 additional “portable missionaries” distributed
through FEBC ministries in 2015. For many people, purchasing a radio is beyond their financial capability. Pray that
in 2016, more funds will allow us to distribute even more radios to those waiting to hear the Good News of Jesus.

March 19th, 2016: A listener to our Davao, Philippines station writes: “Good morning! I’m a Catholic but I always
listen to your program. You don’t know how much you’ve helped me deepen my relationship with God.
I’ve struggled financially but because of your program, I’ve learned to trust God and offer my life to Him.”

March 15th, 2016: We love to tell the remarkable story of hundreds of thousands of Hmong coming to faith through
FEBC broadcasts. Consider this recent note: “Praise God! I’m so happy to be writing to you. Thank you, FEBC,
for sending us the Good News. I listen to your radio programs, which is how I learned the Word of God. I go
everywhere in Vietnam to tell others about Jesus’ love. Many Hmong have become believers. This is why the
government arrested and fined me. However, I praise the Lord that I was saved and now serve God for my people.”

ministering to college students on several campuses in the Southeast.

In March, the leadership team of InterVarsity in the Southeast and the team of InterVarsity
staff from New England met to pray at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The New England InterVarsity group recently wrapped up three weeks of spring break service
projects in New Orleans. During this time, hundreds of students heard the Gospel and were
given the opportunity to respond.
At the same time, more than ever before InterVarsity staff are being challenged to consider
re-locating AND re-planting in New Orleans. Please pray for the right people to come in
God’s timing...for the Gospel to be proclaimed at Tulane and surrounding campuses by
InterVarsity again.

community in that city.

John and Liz Steketee have retired from MTW after serving as missionaries for 36 years.
During those 36 years they served in numerous locations: in France learning the language,
in Ivory Coast planting churches, in Senegal planting churches and finally in Augusta, GA,
working with international students.
Following their retirement in December, 2015, they have continued to live and minister in
Augusta, Ga. The Steketees now serve with The International Link. This organization (“IL”)
began in 2002 as a non-profit organization to serve the international visitors who come to
college campuses for study, research, and military training. Today IL exists as a non-profit,
interdenominational Christian organization that works in cooperation with many local
churches to serve international guests in the Central Savannah River Area of Georgia.
In Augusta, John works as the IL Director. His duties include training American volunteers and various teaching
programs for IL’s international clients. Liz works as an Education Associate, assisting John through teaching and in
providing for the various needs of IL’s international clients.
In a recent letter, the Steketees thanked Pinewoods for our faithful support of their ministry. They report that they
continue to be very involved in ministering to the international community. In particular, they mention two
physicians they are currently working with. One is from the Far East and the other is from the Middle East.
Both men are spending time with the Steketees, reading and discussing the Bible.

waiting for the call to fly with a training captain (yes, that would be with real people in this plane!)

 three Enterprise couples who are dealing with major health issues, including two with cancer and for our Enterprise
family to support them well; God’s presence to engulf them at this hard time

R
andy Alcorn, a New York Times bestselling author of more than forty books, is well-known
for his fictional book about a pastor in China, Safely Home. A friend couldn’t finish it since it
is so sad—about a Chinese pastor working as forced labor making Christmas tree lights while
imprisoned for his faith. This is not a bedtime story. However, it may be one we should read. Just
in 2015, Chinese officials cut down hundreds of crosses from Christian churches as well as
arrested and imprisoned hundreds more pastors.
We also know about Alcorn’s writing on Heaven. A Life Group has recently worked through this
book and we have it on CDs in the Library. We also have the children’s book, Wait Until Then. In
addition, we have a 3-book fiction series: Deadline, Dominion, and Deception, and Courageous
(based on the film).
One further note: Alcorn gives 100% of his book royalties to missions, pro-life causes and famine
relief. After he designated these royalties, he was arrested and jailed for non-violent rescue at
abortion clinics. He resigned from pastoring a church and lives on minimum wage to avoid
garnishment of wages from two lawsuits; one abortion clinic was awarded $8.2 million against the
group of peaceful protesters.

An update from your Children’s Director
Hello Pinewoods family! We are having a fantastic year so far in Children’s Ministry. I am very happy to
report that our kids are hearing and learning the gospel of our glorious Savior every week, from Sunday
School to Children’s Church (and worship) to Sunday Night Live where we continue to work through the
Children’s Catechism and Jesus Storybook Bible. But above all, it is my prayer and greatest desire that this
momentum we have in our programs and congregation will continue into our individual homes every week as
the gospel continues to shape us and our children after us. Pastor & author Dave Stone writes, “A Christian
family doesn’t magically and instantly appear because we wish it into existence. We have to be serious about
the task of passing on our faith, about living the way God calls us to live – not just when others are looking,
but all day, every day.” So as we head into a new month (already April, no doubt!) let us keep in the front of
our minds that one of the most important things we will ever do as parents is show our children what it means
to truly love God and our neighbor, within our own walls first.
Start simple, but start today: learn the catechism and memory verses with your kids as we get ready to have
another Catechism Carnival this Sunday, sing the doxology together
over dinner, find just a few minutes to intentionally read a Psalm or
Proverb and pray together… You will not regret it!

Ed & Mary Schaier - Update on Ed’s recovery from perforated colon: Meds seemed to have worked and got the perforation to close up, fever down and will
probably be released later today, though he will not return home until the weekend.
Missions Commitments - Pray for 2 to go be missionaries; pray for many to pray; pray for many to give.
Beth Neill - (R. Roberson’s VT neighbor) needs liver transplant. Pray that they can keep her stabilized (she has many medical issues), and find a donor quickly.
