Margaret Johnson Director of Religious Education K-8 (310) 377-4573 ext 136 | [email protected] 4 In this week's Gospel, Jesus offers Peter an opportunity to redeem himself. Peter denied Jesus three times when Jesus needed him the most. So Jesus invites Peter to repent and to be forgiven by expressing his love three times. Peter gets the chance to repair the damage he caused by denying Jesus. Repentance can free us from the guilt that keeps us from fully loving ourselves and others. We can't really be free until, like Peter, we try and correct the damage that our sins leave behind. The Easter season is a very good time to prioritize and learn from our mistakes. The Risen Christ offers us the opportunity and the courage to look honestly at our sins and to repair any broken relationships with others or broken pathways to living the Christian life. Katie Dante Coordinator of Confirmation and Youth Ministry (310) 377-4573 ext 145 | [email protected] FA I T H F O R M AT I O N A D U LT S QUESTION OF THE WEEK April 17, 2016—Fourth Sunday of Easter Gospel: John 10:27-30 Jesus said, “My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand.” How do you try to protect as Christ protects you? EXPERIENCE THE POWER OF GOD’S MERCY: SANCTUS Interested in Becoming Catholic? Are you or someone you know interested in becoming Catholic? Are you missing some of your sacraments, such as First Communion or Confirmation? If you answered yes to either of these, and would like to know more about RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) please call the Parish Office for more information. Inquirers are always welcome to join our candidates and catechumens at the special dismissal at the 9:00 am Sunday Mass. Showing Love And Dignity For Others In Death Of the seven corporal works of mercy, only one is not found in Matthew 25:31-46: bury the dead. Why then is it included as one of the works of mercy? Proper burial of the dead was an important practice in Israel from the earliest days. In Genesis 23, Abraham purchases a field to bury his wife Sarah. Genesis 49:31 informs us that Abraham will also be buried in that tomb, as well as Isaac and his wives, Leah and Rebekah, and their son Jacob. The importance of a proper burial is also seen in the interment of Joshua and the bones of Joseph (Jos 24:29-33). Proper burial of the dead was also seen with the body of Jesus (Jn 19:40). Proper burial of the dead was considered so important in Israel that being left unburied was considered a curse and a condemnation. According to the book of Tobit, burying the dead was an important work of charity (Tb 1:16-17). As with all works of mercy, what is emphasized here is the importance of compassion for others and the need to treat everyone with dignity and the respect they deserve as people created by a loving God. Showing love for others, even after death, is how Jesus’ disciples are to show their love for God. Misty Jesse Director of Evangelization (310) 377-4573 x130 | [email protected] Spend a day away from the media, the cell phone, and the computer to hear the still, small voice of God calling you to a life of everyday holiness. It is time to sign up for the next Sanctus retreat on April 16, 2016. Registration forms are available in the Parish Office and the rack in the Narthex. For more information contact Chris Acherman in the parish office: [email protected]. GROWING IN THE WORD: GOSPEL OF LUKE The year 2016 places us in Year C of the Lectionary Cycle with an emphasis on readings from the Gospel of Luke. Join us on Mondays at St. John Fisher for a 6 week series ending May 9, on the Gospel of Luke. Together we will explore this Gospel; one filled with colorful images of compassion and gentleness. We will also have an opportunity to study the motifs of diabolical forces, the great reversal of rich and poor and the schism of those who reject Jesus’ teaching. Time: Monday evenings: 7:00 pm.-8:30 pm in the Auditorium. Presenter, Misty Jesse, PhD, DMin. Stewardship and Our Baptismal Promises The practice of renewing our baptismal promises at Easter is essential for those who take the stewardship of faith seriously. It focuses the steward’s attention on answering Christ’s call to follow after him, proclaiming his Gospel in word and deed, putting the Eucharist into action, building up the communion of faith, and sharing Christ’s peace with a broken world. The baptismal water of Easter performs a twofold purpose. It baptizes the catechumens and it refreshes our covenant with God in Christ through the renewal of our baptismal promises. It “seals” our resolve to follow Jesus more closely. PV Resale Needs Volunteers!
