Christ commanded His followers to “love one another.” What does that look like in today’s
world? Join us for a new five part sermon series beginning Sunday, October 4. In the “I
Love My Church” series, we’ll talk about: Loving Our Community, Love by Serving Others,
Love by Giving to Those in Need, and Love by Sharing. This sermon series will lead us up
to Consecration Sunday on November 1. During October you will receive your commitment
card in the mail to be completed and turned in on November 1. Don’t forget, you can invite a
friend to come to church. We’d love to share Christ’s love with them and invite them to become a part of God’s family! We love our church. Please be thinking about why you love
your church.
New Every Morning
By Cheryl Henson, Senior Pastor
I
love the fall. F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote, “Life starts
all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” Fall
starts with beautiful clear mornings and the trees
burst out in radiant colors. School is back in session, and
children return with anticipation of a new teacher. The
church also begins a new cycle. People who have taken
the lazy, hazy days of summer and traveled or just
played hooky, realize it is time to get back to the
everyday routine of real life. But what a life, filled with
the cool breezes and the opportunity to begin again. So
it is here at First Baptist. Our children, youth and young
adult classes begin. Our Wednesday family night, our
choirs and handbells return to make our lives richer and
spiritually deeper. We begin our march towards
Thanksgiving and we stop to remember with gratitude
that each day is special. Don’t wait until November to
express your gratitude; make each day count. Slow
down, take a look around, and enjoy God’s creation as
the colors change. Have a slice of pumpkin pie or a mug
of apple cider and remember God’s goodness and mercy
is new every morning. Life indeed starts over when you
give it to God.

Why Study Ruth?
P
astor Cheryl suggested that I should lead a Bible
study and I didn’t hesitate about what I wanted
the subject to be.
The book of Ruth is such an amazing story a story
of heartbreak, loss, wandering and redemption. It’s the
Christian story.
At one point, we
have all recognized
that we cannot make it
on our own we need
a Redeemer. We have
all realized that the
people we thought
would always be there
are suddenly not. We
are forced to change our understanding and definitions
of “home” and “family.” We feel lost and lonely. We do
what we can to survive, and only with the benefit of
hindsight, can we see that God was providing for us the
whole time; even when we couldn’t recognize it.
Far from being merely a “woman’s book” this
book has applications for all of us. This study is
particularly timely as we watch the Syrian refugees try
to find and survive in their new homes, as Pastor Corey
reminded us in worship on September 13th, their
problem is our problem. Because their struggle is God’s
opportunity for us to show hospitality and provision to
those who just can’t make it on their own. Ruth, Naomi
and Boaz have much to teach us.
I hope you’ll join us Monday afternoons in the
Fellowship Hall at 1:00 p.m. starting September 28th.

Years in the Making
2015 Century Tree Fund
By Corey Fields, Associate Pastor
This year’s Century Tree Fund
campaign raised $6,900. We wish to
recognize all of the donors to this year’s
Century Tree Fund.
I
was a sixth grader and in my first year as a member
of my church's youth group. I was hooked on the
youth group from the beginning. It was energetic, it
was encouraging, and the leaders were passionate about
following Jesus. It was unlike anything I had ever
experienced before.
It was February of
1992 (yes, I'm young). I
was with the group on a
retreat that ended with a
Christian concert. An
invitation was issued to
anyone who wanted to
accept Christ as Lord and
Savior for the first time. I
didn't know much, but I knew that God loved me and
that I loved church people. So, nervously and with the
encouragement of a friend, I went down. I would later
walk forward at my home church to announce my
decision and request baptism.
There was much that came before that moment,
however. My mother had me in church from the time I
was in diapers. I had many faithful Sunday School
teachers who had given of their time, talents and
treasure to teach me the key stories and verses of the
Bible. I had attended Vacation Bible School every year,
something that takes more time and effort than I
appreciated at the time. Many of the adults who made all
that happen were forever patient with me and put up
with my quirks, my know-it-all outbursts, and who
knows what else.
Today, a very similar story has become a reality for
my son Braydon. The apple has not fallen far from the
tree in terms of personality traits (although he's way
more of an extrovert than I ever was). He too has
benefited from nearly 8 years of loving arms, solid Bible
teaching, tireless volunteers, and many other adults
giving of themselves and probably occasionally
wondering if it's worth it all.
Thanks to all of you, First Baptist Church of Topeka
will always and forever be his childhood church...the
place where he was taught the faith and shown what
love and grace look like. Thanks to all of you, he has
come to his moment of decision. On Sunday, September
13, he came forward, just as I did 22 years ago, to
publicly profess his faith in Christ.
Such moments are years in the making. But of
course, there are many other children who already have
or hopefully will make their decision. I encourage you

that our work is worth it, but also that our work is never
done. There are more children to come, more lives that
can be changed.
I also remind you that baptism is not the end of a
journey but the beginning. The journey of faith can be a
treacherous one. Mine has included times of doubt,
moments of despair, and other challenges that I never
anticipated back in sixth grade. Our young people need
us just as much after their decision as before. It is
becoming increasingly difficult and counter-cultural to
be a person of faith who remains faithful to a
worshiping community.
May we remain faithful. The decision to follow
Christ is one that is years in the making. The becoming
of a disciple is a lifetime in the making.

Foundation News
By Bill Ogle, Foundation Trustee
The Christian Opportunity Fund is one of the
Foundation’s managed funds. It is an undesignated fund.
Being undesignated, it is a fund with the flexibility to
enable ministries as they become known.
Gifts to this fund can be given as an endowment or
as a special gift. If endowed, only the proceeds can be
used  a great way to ensure your ministry lives on! A
special
gift
can be used in
it's entirety as
the
church
sees fit.
An example of a special gift is the Martha Chitwood
gift that has been used by the church for many projects
over the course of many years. Several times the church
has elected to use this fund as a source for interest free
loans so that Martha's gift could benefit the church over
and over.
Remembering the FBC Foundation in your will is an
investment in the continuing ministry of our church.
There are numerous ways to give. Talk to a pastor or a
Foundation board member to see how your ministry can
live on.

October is Pastor Appreciation Month
The Staff Congregation Relations Committee wishes to
remind you to remember our
Pastors Cheryl, Corey, and
Laura and their families for the
hard work, sacrificial
dedication and multiple
blessings they provide to First
Baptist Church-Topeka.
WFN will continue through October beginning with
dinner at 5:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. At 6:15 p.m.
there is programming for adults and children. Nursery is
available during the programming hour. The new
programming option for adults will be a Bible study led
by Rev. Art Campbell. The title of his study is
“Heavenly Stories with Earthly Meanings.” Other adults
will continue with Financial Peace University and
Moments for Mom. Children (age 4 to 5th grade) will
have children’s choir and activities. The Children’s
Choir will sing on October 25 during the 10:45 a.m.
service.
Harvester’s BackSnack Program
This school year marks our fourth year
in assisting with Harvester’s BackSnack
program. This program began in
Shawnee county in 2008-2009 with 250
students in 12 schools; and now has 975
students in 20 schools. That translates to
over 500,000 pounds of shelf stable food plus 8,500
pounds of fresh produce. The food is for the children to
eat over the weekend. Some children in Topeka have
little or no nutritious food to eat when not in school.
This year we will be packing and delivering food to 100
children at Bishop, McClure, and Whitson. We need
volunteers and plastic grocery sacks. Contact the church
office, 267-0380 to sign up, or drop off your plastic
sacks in the church office.
2015-2016 Upward Season
Upward Basketball needs
volunteers for its upcoming
evaluations on the dates listed
below. No basketball experience
is required. If you would like to
volunteer, please email
Whitney Casement at
[email protected] with the
dates that you are available to help.
Evaluations will be held in our gym.

FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF TOPEKA BOARD OF MINISTRIES
Minutes September 16, 2015
DRAFT—NOT YET
APPROVED BY
BOARD
Members Attending: Robyn Aeschliman, Deane Burgess, Whitney Casement, Shirley Davis, Pam DeFries, Rachel Ebert, Corey Fields, Matt
Harader, Dave Harrison, Cheryl Henson, Theresa Hodges, Bill Kelly, Mary Jane King, and Dennis Slimmer.
At 7:30 p.m., Matt Harader gave a leadership devotional, centered around Matthew 5:7: “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive
mercy.” God provided that those who show mercy shall receive mercy from both others and God. Matt led in prayer.
Action Items
Approval of 08/19/15 meeting minutes: Dave Harrison moved and Robyn Aeschliman seconded to approve the 08/19/15 minutes, as
written. Motion carried.
Financial report: Matt Harader reported that receipts were down in August, leaving the church with a net income of -$4,359.92. The year-todate net income at the end of August was -$17,906.98, slighter better than at this time last year. September’s first two weeks of receipts were
very good. The Finance Committee moved to approve the August 2015 financial report. Motion carried.
New Business
Transportation for members who need rides to church: The Care Committee reported the growing need for transportation to church for some
members who no longer drive. There are liability concerns for members who may fall, either using the church’s 15-passenger bus or having
volunteers pick up and return members. It was noted that Brewster Place and Aldersgate will provide rides, but for a high fee. Other
suggestions included talking with Jayhawk Area Agency on Aging and Washburn’s Safe Ride program for options. In addition, there was
some discussion of providing streaming services at Brewster Place at 10:45 on Sundays in its chapel. Another suggestion was to provide a
valet service to help those who need it at the church, assisting them getting out and into cars and even driving their cars to parking places.
2016 slate of officers: Pam DeFries stated that the Nominating Committee will meet soon and asked Board members to let her know if they are
not willing to serve in 2016.
Annual report: Cheryl Henson reminded that every committee should file its annual report by Oct. 31, preferably by e-mail to Verlee. Each
ministry area should also review its budget and give estimates for 2016 to Matt and the Finance Committee by Oct. 13. The Board will review
the budget in October and publish it by the middle of November.
Church directory: Cheryl announced that a new pictorial church directory will be made this year, with photographs being scheduled for Nov.
4-7. Members may sign up online in a week or so and, starting in October, people may sign up after church services. LifeTouch has offered
several discounts for those who wish to purchase their portraits, including a $10 discount for every family, a $5 discount for families who bring
canned goods (which will be given to the church for Doorstep), and a 20% discount for members of the military, fire fighters and police as well
as for seniors (60 and older).
Membership report: The Membership Secretary moved and Matt Harader seconded to accept a request for membership by baptism for
Braydon Fields. Motion carried.
New dates for the calendar:
• Sept. 26 Barbeque at Terra Heights, 4:00-6:00 p.m.—bring lawn chairs and side dishes
• Nov. 4 Game night at the church, 6:00-8:00 p.m., sponsored by Adult Education
Area Reports
Recreation: Whitney Casement stated that Upward evaluations start next month, scheduled from 6:00-7:30 p.m. on Oct. 27, 29 and 30 and
from 9:30-11:00 a.m. on Oct. 31. No basketball experience is necessary for the evaluations. Volunteers are needed to take brochures to USD
501 schools by the end of September.
Outreach: This group discussed getting a team of volunteers to greet Upward families and invite them to church, connecting with the families
through their kids. The church will also sponsor this year’s Crop Walk.
Care: In addition to discussing transportation for homebound members, the group is planning an Effective Listening and Caring Seminar this
fall, inviting Terra Heights to attend as well.
Worship: The Worship Committee is recruiting—if anyone has an interest in helping to plan worship services, please contact Mary Jane King
or another member of the committee. Kathy Slimmer will be creating decorations for the church during October and November. Hanging of
the Greens is scheduled for Nov. 19 during the Sunday School hour.
Children and Youth Education: In a written report, the committee discussed plans for a December event, such as Birthday Party for Jesus or
another activity. Pastor Laura is putting together a discipleship class for current third graders and up this fall.
Adult Education: The group discussed both current and future Wednesday Family Night programs.
Staff Reports
Cheryl Henson provided a written report, including:
• Wednesday Family Night got off to a good start Sept. 9, with a session on teaching children financial responsibility, a new program
called Moments for Moms, and children’s choir taught by Will Kubie.
• ABW will host the area Tri-River Rally on Monday, Sept. 21, and is planning ABW Sunday on Oct. 18.
• All finance officers of the church are asked to attend the Economic Summit at Central Seminary on Oct. 1, where they will hear from
experts in the area of pastoral and church finances.
Corey Fields, in a written report, announced that a keyboard was purchased for the ConneXion band, Broken Bread, using the remaining
money from Charlie Stryker’s memorial. It joins the bass and electric guitars on the stage that were purchased in memory of Larry Golden. He
also stated that Upward’s newly recruited team will operate independently, but under the auspices of the recreation committee. Whitney
Casement will again serve as the assistant director for basketball and Dawn Dennis is returning to direct cheerleading.
Laura Cassidy-Moffatt provided a written report, pointing out her activities with children and youth as well with elderly and shut-in members.
At 8:40 p.m., with no further business, Dennis Slimmer closed the meeting with prayer.
Respectfully submitted, Norma Phillips, Church Clerk
