Max Jury is a piano playing singer songwriter from Des Moines, Iowa, who, at 23, is about to
release one of the albums of the year. Simply titled ‘Max Jury’, this 11 track opus conjures up the
past while stepping boldly into the future driven by his incredible voice. Once you hear it, you
won’t forget it.
Max’s album is released on the Marathon Artists label, the home of Courtney Barnett.
You might have seen him on tour with Lana Del Rey or Rufus Wainwright and witnessed the
plaintive heartache that lives within his music. Or you might have heard him on Radio 1, 2 or 6

For Max Jury is making waves. His new single ‘Numb’ evokes the longing to escape, a longing that

Cat’s Eyes consist of Faris Badwan (lead singer of the Horrors) and
Canadian soprano, Rachel Zeffira.
If Cat's Eyes self-titled debut was grown in the dark, then Treasure House, their second,
is born in light. If the nocturnal interiors of Cat's Eyes were a cult flick viewed in smudgy
black and white on cathode ray, then Treasure House takes everything into the great
outdoors and shoots it in Technicolor on wide silver-screen; an old school blockbuster, of
the kind they no longer make.
This is the third album by the band,who’s previous albums include Cat's Eyes self-titled

Chris T-T returns with 9 Green Songs, his long-awaited follow-up to 2013's The Bear and
a pseudo-sequel to his classic 2005 album 9 Red Songs.
9 Green Songs captures the vulnerable fury that bore the grassroots, folk-influenced
approach of 9 Red Songs (an album that still resonates 10 years later), adding a modern
Twitter feed tick-list of ideas, charged by the energy of his recent work with the Hoodrats.
If anything T-T is becoming lyrically more radical. 'Love Me, I'm a Liberal' brutally indicts
clicktivist sensibilities and "me, me" sensitivity of hipsters on social media, displaying their
colours and doing not much else. 'Cutting A Longbow' recalls the spoken word live
favourite 'M1 Song', in sound if not in content. Even then, this vocal diatribe is driven by
pummelling percussion, giving it a rare menace. This contrasts wonderfully with 'A Garden
On The Motorway'; an upbeat fairytale of green-fingered warfare on concrete commuting.

This 25th anniversary edition includes a bonus commentary CD featuring Fenriz's
thoughts on the songs and influences, with insights into the recording session itself.

Darkthrone began in the late 80's as a thrash/death metal act & progressed through
technical death/doom metal experimentation to become legends of the black metal world
& one of the original leading bands of the Norwegian scene, as well as inspiring a whole
generation of metal bands.
Soulside Journey was Darkthrone's debut studio album after signing with Peaceville
Records, following their cult Cromlech demo. It was recorded in 1990 at Sunlight Studios in
Sweden with Tomas Skogsberg, notable for his work with Entombed & many other acts
over the years. Soulside Journey contained tracks of atmospheric & often technical &
complex death metal, with influences ranging from acts such as Autopsy & Death. This
was the band's only death metal album before turning to a more primitive black metal
style, but is still rightly regarded as a masterpiece of the genre.

Holcomb graduated from college in Knoxville, TN he never expected he would spend his twenties

The Multiple Cat blends the sensibilities of synthy new-wave pop with the roughness

The Multiple Cat is a studio project, formed in the mid-nineties, that plays and tours

"The Other Side of Midnight" the first record since "Hi My Name Is Jonny" where
Jonny all the instruments and produced and recorded everything himself. Dean Hurley
mixed it at David Lynch's recording studio, Asymmetrical Studios.
Jonny describes this record as having a dark, watery, night time feel to it and having
Lynch mojo in the air added even more of a vibe to it. Jonny has been a member of
Puscifer, Big Noise (Rage Against the Machine side project) and has recorded on
records by Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Pete Yorn, Tom Morello, Mason Jennings,
Minnie Driver, and Donovan. Jonny recorded self-released cassettes as a teenager
which Marc Ribot used to turn John Zorn on to Polonsky's music.
Reeves Gabrels (David Bowie, The Cure) introduced Polonsky to Frank Black who
became an immediate fan and produced a demo which led to Rick Rubin signing him to
American Recordings. This led to Polonsky and his live band touring with Frank Black
and with Lollapalooza in 1996 (the last good year) on the much revered side stage with
Melvins, Cornershop, Girls vs Boys, Ben Folds Five, Sponge, and Soul Coughing.” -ATM

Phoria are headed up by the master of electronics and composition Trewin Howard, a
deeply sensitive character in tune with his surroundings, empowered with synaesthesia

and mind on edge. When this illness ebbed, it left behind an even more heightened
auditory perception, which he channels into the band's music. He is joined by two friends
he has known all his life (guitarist Jeb Hardwick, piano/synth player Ed Sanderson) and
two others (drummer Seryn Burden and bass/synth player Tim Douglas), whom he feels
he has known forever.
Phoria start to make sense with this strong backbone and incredible bond in place.
'Volition' is bursting with vibrant sounds throughout, from the electronic washes of opener
'Melatonin', to the organic clicks and claps of 'Emanate', to the epic string section finale on

Crows were a popular feature of the folk scene from 1977 until 1987. During that
time, they made two LPs, Crows in 1981 and No Bones Or Grease in 1986. The tracks
on this album were taken from the two albums plus 8 songs recorded for radio
broadcast and never released.
The original line up of the band was Mick Ryan, James Patterson, Ralph Jordan and
John Burge. The band had a number of personnel changes during its time. John Burge
left to join Kitsyke Will in 1981. His place was taken by multi instrumentalist Dave
Bordewey. Ralph Jordan left to join Nigel Chippindale and Colin Thompson in Eric in
1983, though he continued to work with James Patterson as Silas until 1987. Ralph was
replaced by Jim Younger. The band was joined by keyboard and violin player Steve Faux
in the run up to the second album.

Steve Lane is one of the unsung heroes of British Traditional Jazz. Trumpeter Lane formed his
first band in 1949. He remained doggedly loyal to the Classic style of Jazz typified by King Oliver,

Steve remained semi-professional all his life, but was highly respected as a mentor to many
aspiring Jazz musicians over the years. Alongside his playing Steve also ran three record labels,

"The House" is Trudy Kerr's 13th album on her Jazzizit Label. The album is a collaboration
between Trudy and pianist Andrea Vicari. For the past few years they have been performing
duo gigs around London and on hearing Andrea's original compositions Trudy was inspired to
begin writing lyrics to her beautiful tunes.
The album is a change of direction for Trudy. "Stylistically the tunes are more contemporary
sounding and were therefore challenging to sing as well as write suitable lyrics to."

Joining them on the album are bassist Geoff Gascoyne and Martin Hathaway playing sax, flute
and clarinet. This drummer-less quartet is more chamberlike in quality, the melodies are
haunting the arrangements have strong counterpoint lines.
There are six original compositions on the album, four by Andrea and Trudy. The title track "The
House" is a piano and voice duet. The lyrics are about Trudy's childhood house in Australia, a
photo from the house taken in the 60's appears on the front cover. "Pretty Little Dancer" has a
fun township groove and is about Trudy's ballet dancing daughter. "Hold Back the Tears" has a
beautiful fluid solo by Andrea and Trudy's lyrics are about her son having to learn lessons in life
and begin to stand on his own two feet.
The other songs on the album have been arranged by Geoff Gascoyne using the instrumentation
and reharmonisation to reinvent the songs. "Infant Eyes" by Wayne shorter is in 5/4 and has
lovely interplay between Trudy and Martin on the solo. "Waltz for Debby" by Bill Evans has the
added extra of Trudy's vocalese written to the Cannonball Adderley solo. The lyrics continues
Gene Lee's story of a little girl growing up. Chick Corea's "Crystal Silence" is sad and reflective
and Trudy has added some improvised lyrics to the end of the piece. There is also an uplifting
version of Fred Hersch and Norma Winstone's "Song of Life

Since its inception the piano has played a major role in the history and development of
Chamber Music. Because it can attain a near–orchestral volume of sound and complexity and
yet be played with the precision and intimacy of a single line instrument, it is an instrument

What better place to start than with the music of Beethoven, a composer who was involved with
the earliest designs of the pianoforte? His “Piano Trio in B–flat major” is a delightful way to

A fourteen-year odyssey comes to a close with the eagerly anticipated world premiere
recordings of the final volume of Ben Johnston’s string quartets.
The ten string quartets of Ben Johnston, written between 1951 and 1995, constitute no less than
an attempt to revolutionize the medium. Only the first limits itself to conventional tuning. The
others, climaxing in the astonishing Seventh Quartet of 1984, add in further microtones from the
harmonic series to the point that the music seems to float in a free pitch space, unmoored from
the grid of the common twelve-pitch scale.
In a way, this is a return to an older conception of string quartet practice, since players used to
(and often still do) intuitively adjust their tuning for maximum sonority while listening to each
other’s intonation.
The completion of the cycle, supervised throughout by the composer himself, is a historic
achievement that will undoubtedly stand as the definitive document of these works, among the
landmark quartet cycles of 20th-century music.
The Seventh and Eighth Quartets are receiving their world-premiere recordings. The former has a
reputation as the most difficult quartet ever written and the Kepler Quartet has met the
challenge with enviable aplomb, as they have throughout the cycle, affording listeners a chance
to finally hear these difficult but highly rewarding works. Johnston’s brief, poignant Rumi setting,
Quietness, with the composer himself as vocalist, rounds out the recording, a fitting denouement
to—in the words of composer/author Kyle Gann— “possibly the most ambitious string quartet
project in history.”

Eva van Grinsven's Saxofolk debut album with the Berlage Saxophone Quartet was a
spectacular success. On Rendez-vous russe her saxophone and its marvelously versatile tone
blend with the instruments of her chamber music partners, and the fine articulation so

The unforgettable Dieter Klöcker would have celebrated his eightieth birthday in 2016 – which
is reason enough to commemorate this anniversary with a very special edition. Four CDs with
carefully selected musical gems from the WDR audio archive, made between 1969 and 1993,
demonstrate the incomparable variety of Klöcker’s work as a chamber musician.
Since a few CD premieres are found among them, this release is a valuable rarity guaranteed to
enthuse faithful fans of the legendary Consortium Classicum – and not only them.
Today composers like Christian Cannabich and Georg Christoph Wagenseil have their own firm
places in the annals of music history. When Dieter Klöcker first introduced their works on the
concert stage, they were known at most to a few specialists. Wagenseil’s suite, which as the
oldest composition has the honor of opening this program in a recording from 1974, shows how
skillfully the Consortium Classicum was able to combine entertaining performance style with
musicological foundations – from start to finish, a wonderful musical feast!

Only a little chamber music for flute by Beethoven has come down to us. The Viennese classical
titan was not particularly fond of this tender instrument.
Nevertheless, he managed to pen an elegant, nimble Serenade op. 25, which the Ardinghello
Ensemble is now releasing along with a new rendering of the magnificent String Trio op. 3.
For the Ardinghello Ensemble Beethoven stands at the beginning of an epoch of special interest.
The four instrumentalists performing with Karl Kaiser – all of them women – very undogmatically
operate with insights provided by historical performance practice and set out in quest of the
“Faraway Sound” of romanticism.

Even the very first printed editions of Bach’s incomparable Goldberg Variations contained
arrangements for ensembles of melody instruments.
The Aulos Quartet has recorded a new version of Josef Rheinberger’s arrangement that grabs and
keeps our listening attention for two good reasons: the ideal transparency created by the mixed
ensemble of strings and winds and the employment of the 'oboe profonda', a rarely heard
instrument enormously expanding the tonal resources of the oboe family.
The musicians of the Aulos Quartet have based their arrangement on the version produced by
Rheinberger for two pianos more than a hundred years ago. In this version, the oboe and violin
play the treble, the oboe profonda takes charge of the tenor part, and the violoncello supplies the
bass.
The rewarding arrangement by the Swiss ensemble also brings out many a previously unnoticed
detail even for seasoned listeners, and is recorded in MDG's 2+2+2 sound.
