DANCE, ANYONE?
¿ALGUIEN QUIERE BAILAR?
Iris loves to dance. As an eight-grade student at Southwest
Community Campus, Iris was recently searching for a place where she
could learn new dance moves
and meet other students who
shared her passion for dance.
Never having taken a class at
the Grandville Avenue Academy for the Arts, Iris joined the
Hispanic Hip Hop class and
never looked back. Now she
volunteers at the Arts Academy twice a week and stays
afterwards one of the nights to
attend the hip hop class.
A Iris le encanta bailar. Como estudiante de octavo grado en la
escuela Southwest Community Campus, Iris reciéntemente estaba
buscando un lugar donde podría aprender nuevos pasos de baile
y conocer a otras personas que comparten su pasión para bailar.
Nunca antes habia tomado una clase en la Academia de Arte de la
Avenida Grandville, pero Iris se inscribió en la clase de Hip-Hop

Polynesian Dance / Baile Polynesio
Avenue neighborhood.
Depending on the day of the
week, the music emanating from the dance studio ranges from
Latin pop to classical to traditional folkloric rhythms. Dance
classes offered in our after-school program include Polynesian
dance, Hip Hop, Mexican Folkloric dance, and Ballet Basics.
Classes are available to children as young as 4 years old up to
adults. The neighborhood fee for a ten-week session is only $5,
while students who live outside our target area pay $40.
In addition to dance classes, the Arts Academy provides a home
for two children’s dance groups called Grupo Tarasco and La
Nueva Generación. Grupo Tarasco,
led by Josie Cedillo Guillen, is a
Mexican folkloric dance troupe with
students who range from elementary
to high school. La Nueva Generación,
a modern Latin pop dance group for
middle and highschoolers, is the brainchild of Silverio Cerda who also teaches
dance classes at the Arts Academy. Both
dance groups perform throughout the community at various festivals and events.

provee una manera de expresarse uno mismo, ayuda con la
autoestima, anima el aprecio de la música, y enseña disciplina.
Además, el movimiento creativo anima buena salud física y
mejora el equilibrio, la coordinación, la flexibilidad, y el poder. Es
un paso más en la dirección de fomentar el desarrollo de estudiantes
creativos y sanos de por vida.
Hip Hop / Hip Hop
Why dance? Well, the list of physical
and social benefits of dance runs long. Dance provides an outlet for
self-expression, builds self-esteem, encourages music appreciation,
and teaches discipline. In addition, creative movement encourages
physical fitness and improves balance, coordination, flexibility, and
strength. It’s one more step in the direction of fostering the development of creative and healthy life-long learners.

A MESSAGE FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
August 31, 2005, the final workday of Library Director Sr.
Jeanne Marie Jones, marked the end of an era at GAAH. For
that was the last day a Grand Rapids Dominican would be a
member of our Library or Arts Academy staff.
The Grand Rapids Dominicans first got involved in the Grandville
Avenue neighborhood in the mid-nineties when they joined
forces with Mary Angelo and the Roosevelt Park Neighborhood Association to build the
Grandville Avenue Neighborhood Library. First Sr. Joan Pichette and then Sr. Jeanne
Marie ran the library from the time it opened in November of 1996. In the meantime,
another Dominican Sister, Kathryn Sleziak, hooked up with Mary Angelo, and together they
developed the concept of the Grandville Avenue Academy for the Arts. Sr. Kathi’s tireless efforts laid the groundwork for a robust Arts Academy program and a solid base of
support in the community.
We are grateful to the Grand Rapids Dominicans for their vision for the Grandville
Avenue neighborhood and for providing the resources necessary to implement that
vision. While we miss the day-to-day involvement of Sr. Joan, Sr. Kathi, and Sr. Jeanne
Marie, we know that they and their Dominican Sisters will always be with us in spirit.

Las Dominicanas de Grand Rapids primero se involucraron en la vecindad de la Avenida
Grandville a mediados de los años noventa cuando unieron esfuerzos con Mary Angelo
y la Asociación de la Vecindad de la Avenida Grandville para construir la Biblioteca de la

Calvin College’s Boer-Bennink Hall. The students who reside in this dorm have
adopted our Library. They make sure it is staffed with at least three homework help
volunteers every afternoon, and the students hold an annual fundraiser on our behalf
that raises between $1,500 and $3,000.
El Vocero Hispano. Andres Abreu, the owner of this weekly Spanish-language newspaper, donates a quarter-page ad in every issue so that we can promote our programs
and services to the Spanish-speaking community.
The Gardening Angel. Sue Jabin donates her company’s services to beautify the
grounds of the Library and the Arts Academy.
Grand Rapids Symphony. They arranged for Deborah Henson-Conant to visit the
Arts Academy on November 2. More than seventy neighborhood children enjoyed a

SBC Foundation. Through its Excelerator program, the SBC Foundation recently awarded
GAAH a generous technology grant. These funds will be used to install an automated
library management system and purchase a donor database management system.
Structure:Interactive. Not only did they design our website pro bono, but S:I continues
to donate their services to maintain it.
RECONOCIMIENTO ESPECIAL
El Dormitorio Boer-Bennink de Calvin College. Los residentes de este dormitorio han
adoptado nuestra biblioteca. Se aseguran de que hayan tres voluntarios que ayudan con la
tarea cada dia, y cada año hacen una recaudación de fondos que genera entre $1,500 y $3,000.
El Vocero Hispano. Andres Abreu, el dueño de este periódico en español hace donaciones
de anuncios de cuarta-página en cada edición para que podamos promover nuestros
programas y servicios.
El Angel Jardinero. Sue Jabin hace donaciones de servicios de su negocio para hacer
que la Academia de Arte y la Biblioteca se vean hermosos.
La Sinfonía de Grand Rapids hizo posible que Deborah Henson-Conant visitara la
Academia de Arte el 2 de Noviembre. Más de 70 niños del vecindario disfrutaron de la
“hip-harpista” favorita de Grand Rapids.
La Fundación SBC. Por medio de su programa Excelerator, la Fundacion de SBC recientemente
otorgo a GAAH su beca generosa de tecnología. Estos fondos seran utilizados para instalar un

drawing by nine-year-old Alondra, a student in
our after-school Drawing & Painting class. Here
is another drawing created in that class, this one
by Eduardo who is eleven.
