It has been a rewarding first few months for the Chapter and lots of fun! Here are some highlights: We had our Installation and Design Awards celebration in September at the Center Club. Congratulations to the award winners, whose work was featured in the November issue of Orange Coast Magazine. Rick Campos and his leadership team did a great job putting on the event. Thank you to our Community Service team, led by Audra Miller! They did an amazing job remodeling seven bedrooms at His House, a transition home that has helped over 2000 individuals and families since 1989. In keeping with our promise to look for ways to create more value for the membership, the new Programs Team started out with two fabulous General Meetings- the first being at Fashion Interiors, with a motivating presentation on growing your business. Our November General Meeting at Walker Zanger had over 70 members in attendance and a very inspiring presentation on tile design. If you have not been attending our General Meetings, please do come out and join us! November was also very busy with the launch of our first annual Holiday Tabletop Event. It was a collaboration between ASID, Tommy Bahama Home and Luxe Magazine and featured eight designers. The night time event alone yielded over 600 RSVP's. Thank you to Joyce Byrd for chairing this fun event! We are already planning ways to make it even better for next year. Upcoming events for the Chapter include our Holiday Luncheon at Center Court at the Laguna Design Center, which promises to be a festive celebration, and our Student Career Day at the same location in February. We are also planning another Industry Partner Forum for early 2014. The Trade Show team is currently hard at work getting ready for our 23rd annual Trade Show in March. Check out the registration form in this issue if you are interested in signing up as an exhibitor. Stay tuned as we roll out many more memorable events and programs in 2014. Have a wonderful Holiday season! This new fiscal year is already exciting, with increased member participation and a fresh new “buzz”. I am thrilled and honored to be supporting our President, Deirdre Eagles, in my role as President-Elect. Deirdre and I served on the Board together in 2009-2010. Those who know her well know that she is a fearless, “let’s get it done” kind of leader. It will be an action-packed year, with innovative ideas, new relationships and revitalized energy! Of the four years I have served on the Board thus far I am most excited about this year as I prepare for my term as your President. Thank you all for your words of encouragement and unconditional support! Looking forward… In the spring I will begin the process of creating our Strategic Plan to be implemented during my term as President. My leadership goals center on re-engagement; getting our members to realize the value of our organization through active participation and creating a culture of contribution through connection, both professionally and personally. How? By creating and facilitating programs and events, networking opportunities and enrichment tools that energize, inspire and ultimately lead to members’ business growth. We will re-focus our designer, industry partner and student communities on the idea of contribution and mentorship. I welcome suggestions and feedback from you on how we as a Chapter can continue to improve and increase the value of your membership. Get Involved… It’s not too late to get involved! The momentum built from last year continues. With our talented Board of Directors’ hard-work and dedication, you will not want to miss all that our Chapter has to offer. Get involved, find ways to contribute your time and talent, and above all…let’s have FUN in the process! Wishing you and those you love a joyous and memorable holiday season! Walker Zanger Executive Director of Facilities, Designer Kim Bernard, ASID, IIDA, who designed all 15 of their showrooms across the Country, was the speaker. Ms. Bernard spoke on "Unique Usages and Application of Tile and Stone." The beauty of the material can be inspiration for a design, as shown to the audience with many examples from a slide presentation. Also, mixing ceramic, stone and metal creates interest. Moving beyond the kitchen and bath, design can expand into hallways and other living spaces with tile and stone accent walls. Finally, she presented a sneak peek of a new product line, Tangent, a bold and graphic tile collection. The evening concluded with dessert and goodie bags filled with tile and stone samples. There were amazing raffle prizes, some of which created by the showroom staff. ASID 2013 CEU Reporting Period Will End Dec. 31, 2013 By Bonnie Traut, Allied ASID, NKBA, NAPW 2013-2014 ASID-OCC Professional Development Director The close of another American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) continuing education unit (CEU) two-year reporting is December 31, 2013. All ASID Professional, Allied and Associate members must have met their continuing education requirement of 0.6 CEU, as indicated in the ASID bylaws. Registering your CEU credits with IDCEC is a free member service that enables 24/7 access to all your CEUs. Beginning with the 2014–2015 reporting period, IDCEC CEU registration will be mandatory for all ASID members. Each ASID member has been assigned a personal IDCEC identification number. If you are unaware of your number, you can easily s e a r c h for it by entering in your name on the IDCEC website (www.idcec.org/Pages/Forms/Public/LearnerSearch/LearnerSearch.aspx) CEU Requirements – Effective January 1, 2014 By Bonnie Traut, Allied ASID, NKBA, NAPW 2013-2014 ASID-OCC Professional Development Director The ASID Board of Directors approved an increase of required CEUs for all members in the Allied, Professional and Associate categories. Currently, ASID has the lowest CEU requirement (0.6) among the organizations representing the built environment. Raising CEU requirements brings ASID in line with its industry peers and expands member knowledge. Effective Jan. 1, 2014, the CEU requirement will increase from 0.6 to 1.0 (i.e., 10 hours). Note that this does not affect the current reporting period, requiring 0.6 CEUs by Dec. 31, 2013. The first reporting period with the new 1.0 CEU requirement will begin January 1, 2014 and end on Dec. 31, 2015. ASID is also expanding eligible CEUs making it easier to reach 1.0. Approved CEUs such as webinars and chapter events will continue, with the addition of activities such as authoring a book or article, keynote speaking engagements, receiving tenure and more. Following graduation, she created her own design firm, Design Focus, located in San Clemente. She was on the Board from 2000 to 2005. She served as chair of Publicity, Ethics, Design Awards, Nominating Committee and Designers Runway, and attended National conferences on ASID Leadership Training in 2002 and 2003. Beverly served as ASID O.C. Chapter President in 2003-2004. The years 2001 through 2006 were about serving ASID and accomplishing many firsts for our Chapter, one of which was the refurbishment of the Ronald McDonald House, a project near and dear to her heart. A major accomplishment was collaborating with three other chapters to turn our Directory into a positive cash flow. Beverly was instrumental in creating our multi-paged, color ASID Newsletter with our current publishing company in Texas. Another first was the publication of our coffee table book, Designed in Orange County. During this time Bev won seven of our coveted OC Residential Design Awards as well as other prestigious awards in stone and tile design, bedroom and bathroom design, and her client’s home was the Featured Home in the Dana Point Historical Society Home Tour. In addition, she participated in several O.C. Philharmonic Design Houses as a designer and chaired the Shady Canyon house and co-chaired the San Juan house. Beverly had our ASID office moved to its present location at the Laguna Design Center, giving us visibility and a professional presence. Having served on many committees, she was able to raise the standards of our Chapter. Beverly Stadler is the epitome of professionalism and commitment to Interior Design and to ASID! Recently I attended a two day conference with the Presidents and President-Elects from all of the California ASID Chapters. During the weekend intensive we discussed the collective direction our State’s ASID Chapters will pursue with regard to our legislation efforts going forward. With Governor Jerry Brown signing SB 308 into law, effective January 1, 2014, our California Interior Design legislation will be extended until January 1, 2018. Legislation is tough to follow and confusing to most. If you want to take the time to understand the issues and what the passing of the new bill means to interior designers in California, please go to the Interior Design Coalition of California’s website (www.idc-ca.org) and join IDCC. I have also included the details of the law in this issue below. If you have an interest in legislation and want to get involved, please contact me at [email protected]. There will be a need for volunteers to join IDCC’s newly formed Outreach Committee and task force. (As published by the Interior Design Coalition of California on September 26, 2013) GOOD NEWS…CALIFORNIA’S CERTIFIED INTERIOR DESIGN LAW HAS BEEN EXTENDED UNTIL 2018! On September 23, 2013, Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 308 into law, effective January 1, 2014. California Interior Design legislation will be extended until January 1, 2018. The law governing the use of the Certified Interior Designer title has been amended to include the following regulations: The unfair business practice regulations of the statute will be strengthened Section 5806 is added to the Business and Professions Code, to read: “Nothing in this chapter shall prohibit interior design or interior decorator services by any person or retail activity”. Section 5812 will read: “It is an unfair business practice for any person to represent or hold himself or herself out as, or to use the title ‘certified interior designer’ or any other term, such as ’licensed,’ ‘registered,' or ‘CID,’ that implies or suggests that the person is certified as an interior designer when he or she does not hold a valid certification as provided in Sections 5800 and 5801." A written contract between a CID and their client will be required Section 5807 is added to the Business and Professions code to read: “A certified interior designer shall use a written contract when contracting to provide interior design services to a client pursuant to this chapter.” CCIDC, the 501c3 organization that administers the requirements of Certified Interior Designer law, will be subject to the provisions of the Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act. Section 5811.1 is added to the Business and Professions Code, to read: “The meetings of an interior design organization issuing stamps under Section 5801 shall be subject to the rules of the Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act." WHAT DOES THIS MEAN TO CERTIFIED INTERIOR DESIGNERS? • By preserving the CID Title for another four years, the valuable work of establishing the status of the qualified interior designer as a “professional" continues. • Enforcement of the Bagley-Keene Open Meeting Act will allow for greater stakeholder input and provide the opportunity to actively participate in the decision making process of the organization that oversees the certification process. 22 | WINTER 2013 | CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER • The requirement for a signed contract between a CID and client as well as disclosure of errors and omissions insurance both lends credibility to CIDs and provides the public with protection; allowing for confidence in our profession. MORE GOOD NEWS In addition to the amendments included in the sunset extension, many other positive outcomes have resulted from this legislative process. • IDCC has built important new relationships with CCIDC and the California Building Officials (CALBO). We have met at the same table with CCIDC, discussed our mutually desired outcomes; which is continuation of CID and a strengthening of our stamp and seal permitting privileges statewide. Finding commonality, we have built a bridge towards future consensus. • We have forged vitally important relationships with legislators, consultants, lobbyists and the Governor’s office. State Legislators have become aware that the profession has concerns with the current limits in certification. They understand that we are seeking recognition as a profession in the legal environment; that the laws are not being uniformly applied and that we are out of step with the other states that require the NCIDQ examination as the international standard. There is new awareness of the blocked career path for our state university and community college interior design graduates. We can anticipate that legislators will be more receptive to our continued presence on the steps of the Capitol as we work forward. OUR WORK IS NOT FINISHED! There is still much to be accomplished. Going forward, IDCC will continue to work towards these goals: • Gaining uniform stamp acceptance by building departments across the state, creating stability for our profession and eliminating unnecessary costs to the consumer. Outreach and education of building officials will play a prominent role towards that end. • Acceptance of the NCIDQ examination as an alternative to the IDEX to qualify for certification. The NCIDQ is recognized as the industry standard in all other states except California, including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Canadian Provinces. Recognition and acceptance of the NCIDQ by other states offers portability and reciprocity to certificate holders allowing them flexibility to work in other states and meet their certification / licensing requirements more easily. An NCIDQ certificate holder has the ability to compete on stronger footing for Federal projects and qualify for academic positions because the examination is considered the higher industry standard. If you have any questions concerning the current extension of the law or our plans for the future, please send us an email at [email protected]; visit our website www.idc-ca.org or join the conversation on LinkedIn. We appreciate the efforts and contributions of those who have supported the Coalition throughout this process and we count on your continued support as we continue to strive to strengthen the laws that will support all who practice as Certified Interior Designers in California. These changes are vital to the future of our continually evolving profession and we cannot do it without you. Please renew your membership or if you are not already a member, join us now! Three professionals - Meghan Yang with Meghan Yang Interiors, Betty Friedman with 3form and Doug Jagerman with Shaw shared outstanding presentations. Meghan Yang, one of our alumni, was very open about how she built her successful residential design firm. Betty Friedman’s presentation was, as always, enthusiastic and humorous. Doug Jagerman informed the students of carpet basics, or Carpet 101 as he called it, before he showed the latest Shaw products. Fundraising is an integral part of the Interior Design Club. This Fall we have had two very successful and yummy fundraisers - a chocolate ice cream sale and a soda float sale. We are planning a Christmas stocking sale, making the stockings ourselves out of discontinued fabric memo samples and yarn. These events will provide enough money so that we can celebrate the upcoming holiday in style! Halloween was a blast! We used gingerbread squares to design and build haunted houses. The results were both astonishing and totally fun. Our upcoming Christmas party will again utilize our students’ design skills by decorating cookies. The Interior Design Club has a huge heart when it comes to giving to the community, especially during the holiday season. This year we will be donating to the H.I.S. House in Orange County. Always an interest at the Art Institute is eco-friendly education. Per the students’ request, Martha Hansen coordinated a study workshop for the LEED Grass Associate exam. 24 | WINTER 2013 | CA ORANGE COUNTY CHAPTER Student Rep Message By Traci Salemme, Student ASID 2013-2014 ASID OC Chapter Student Rep to the Board I say it every year, but I can’t believe fall is here and another summer has come to an end. Although the colors of the Palm trees might not change, there is something about fall that is simply “in the air”. As I head back to school for my second year at the Interior Designers Institute I was presented with a new opportunity to become the student rep to the board. Having been an ASID member and merely scratching the surface of everything they have to offer, I jumped at the opportunity to get more involved… and WOW, what a whirlwind of excitement it has been thus far! First thing first, must get some training! The newly elected board members and myself attended the “Chapter Leadership Conference” in Los Angeles in June. What an amazing experience! Not only did I get to know my new boards members better, but was introduced to students all across the country who were living my new role. It was truly electrifying to learn about their events, experiences, chapters, and their schools. The overall leadership and passion for the design field could truly be felt throughout the convention center and left me inspired. Next, get down to business! The ASID calendar is bursting with events, meetings and educational opportunities, and I know we have a solid strategic plan to ensure every one of those is flawless. I am working hard to make certain that students of our Orange County design schools don’t miss an opportunity to get involved and are informed of when those events take place. My personal goal for this term is to help students understand, that even at the student level, there is value and importance in our general meetings and that they see every event as an opportunity to broaden their professional network. A solid education AND a solid network are what get the job! Lastly, have some fun! Although it may only be a few months into my new term I can’t believe the friends I have made, the memories we’ve shared, and all the laughter. As the holiday’s approach there is only more fun to be had and I am so excited to hit the ground running in 2014 with all the momentum built in 2013. Happy Holidays to our OC Chapter and I look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year! STUDENT CORNER Saddleback College At the Saddleback Interior Design Department, our projected calendar of events during Fall 2013 was as variant and yet balanced as it was for the color trends forecast of the year. On the scale of energetic and vibrant, it is always the semester where a rather large number and a wide variety of classes are offered at once; from fundamental and advanced, to residential and commercial, as well as workshop lab. and digital/software classes. A dashing illumination of acquired knowledge splashes a sense of refreshed innovation over the minds of Saddleback design students. Starting off with an overview on current color trends and innovations in wall-paint treatments, designer and saddleback alumni Erin Gonzalez, NPS Manager Southern California at Dunn Edwards Paints, introduced students in the commercial design class to problems and solutions they would commonly encounter; she also reflected on her career path after college. Respectively, the SCIDC monthly meetings continued to bring together all club members for a positive enrichment on both, the educational and social levels. In sampling the color scheme part with the pastels- as they serve well for a generic background formation- a professional perspective on “The Benefits and Pathways to Certification” was presented by our guest speaker, David M. Wagner, CID. Similarly, two free-workshop classes were offered by Saddleback business professor, Rebecca Knapp, The first one highlighted the importance of Social Media and its usage for marketing purposes. The second class covered the topic of “How to Jump Start your Design Business” by using the right tools and resources, and building an entrepreneurial spirit for success. Real World Design Week SCIDC board meeting presided by Design Professor Alinde Herron, and SCIDC president, Kim Schwing Alongside the hard work for high standards, bonding within the Saddleback design family remains on the roll. Team projects and community volunteering always lead to fun gatherings and celebrations. From boat rides together, to crafting masks and mustache for Halloween, there continues to be tides of rainbows casted through the design team.
