IdN Magazine, Hong Kong Radio New Zealand, New Zealand Live, Radio New Zealand Studio – Auckland, New Zealand [excerpt] Bryan Crump: It’s a quarter past seven on Nights. Our first guest is a man who has made a documentary about something I guess a lot of us take for granted. For example: when someone first mentioned the phrase “motion graphics” to me, I wasn’t sure what she meant. But it’s something I am pretty sure I see everyday on the moving billboards in the central city. Those little moving logos I might see on the internet, or special effects in music videos and films. Graham Elliott’s movie New York in Motion looks at how that city of the same name uses the technology. – Graham joins us now, welcome to Nights. Graham Elliott: Thanks for having me on, Brian. BC: What do you mean by motion graphics? GE: Well in it’s simplest form it is graphic design that is actually moving. So, if you just think of a poster, you have an image of somebody, you have some typography and maybe some kind of pattern. So with motion graphics the picture is actually moving, it’s live action. The typography is moving or changing into something else. And the pattern will have some kind of motion. Traditionally all this would take place in the rectangle of the tv. But now with, like you said, with the billboards, with the ipod the ipad with the ubiquity of all these screens around us. It’s become part of our language, it’s everywhere.
