Knitting in the Heartland is a biennial event that celebrates knitting and the
Kansas City area’s fiber community. Sponsored by the Sunflower Knitters’
Guild, the event includes a variety of classes taught by Guild members and
special guest instructors. Past featured guest instructors have included Lucy
Neatby, Nicky Epstein, Stefanie Japel and Melissa Leapman.

The vendor market is free to the public with plenty of room to socialize and
knit. The market showcases regional vendors from large knitting shops to
independent spinners and dyers. The vendor market will be open Saturday
and Sunday from 8:30AM to 5:30PM.

☛ Our Special Guest, FRANKLIN HABIT
Writer, illustrator, and photographer, Franklin Habit’s first piece of
knitting—a vaguely rectangular sixfoot scarf—was produced during his
student days at Harvard University
in the 1990s. Until the widespread
revival of the craft, he stitched in
solitude, turning out a small but
steady stream of mittens, scarves,
and hats for startled friends and relations. In February 2005, inspired by
the emergence of the online knitting
community, he created The Panopticon (the-panopticon.blogspot.com).
What began as a project diary is now
one of the most popular knitting blogs, with mentions in publications
as diverse as Knit 1 and The Advocate. Franklin’s publishing experience
includes writing lifestyle features for the Boston Phoenix, reading his own
essay for the knitting podcast Cast On, and writing for Interweave Knits,
PieceWork, Yarn Market News, and Knitty.com.

B is for Purl: A Brief History of Knitting Patterns
FRIDAY, April 13, 7PM

In the beginning, there was knitting; and it was good. Then came knitting
books, and they were good. Except when they weren’t.
In this lighthearted, lavishly illustrated talk, learn about where, when and
how the first printed knitting patterns appeared; hear the stories of the
pioneering women who made their fortunes catering to the first generations of leisure needleworkers; marvel at spectacular examples of primordial errata; and experience the many joys (and otherwise) of bringing
nineteenth-century designs to life.
Tickets are $5 at the door and are first come, first served. Seating is limited.

Advanced Cast-On (Chery Allison)
Brioche Stitch Cowl or Scarf Demonstration, practice and discussion of
Kitchener Rib cast-on which can be used for
K1P1 or K2P2 ribbing and Twisted German
cast-on which is a flexible, stretchy cast-on as
well as other techniques. No homework required for this class. Please bring your favorite
size 7 or 8 needles and worsted weight yarn in
a light color. (1.25 hrs)

Advanced Bind-Off (Chery Allison)
De-Mystifying Cables (Jennifer Nugent)
Demonstration, practice and discussion of
Kitchener Rib bind-off and Twisted German
bind-off. Kitchener Rib bind-off is prepared
by knitting special rows and executing a
sewn cast off. Twisted German bind-off is
flexible and stretchy and can be used for
toe-up sock cuffs and top-down hats and
sweaters. No homework is required for this
class but, swatches would be helpful. If you
have swatches from the Advanced Cast-On
class, you could pair the cast-on and bind-off
techniques. Please bring US size 7 or 8 needles
and worsted weight yarn in a light color and a
tapestry needle. (1.25 hrs)
Beginning Cast-On (Joan Daniels)
Learn some new ways to cast-on stitches to
begin a project. Besides the long tail and
backwards E cast-ons, we will look at the
knitted and cable cast-ons and a provisional
crochet cast-on. We will practice the cast-ons
and discuss their uses. There is no homework
for the class, but please bring light colored
worsted weight yarn to practice with and US
size 7 or 8 needles. (1.25 hrs)
Beginning Bind-Off (Joan Daniels)
Learn some alternate ways to bind-off the
stitches of a project. Besides the basic chain
bind-off, we will learn the 3-needle, crochet
and sewn bind-offs. There is no homework for
the class, but please bring light colored worsted
weight yarn to practice with and US size 7 or 8
needles. (1.25 hrs)
Learn the technique of Brioche knitting – a
stitch which relies on slipped stitches worked
in conjunction with yarnovers resulting in a
lofty, ridged, reversible fabric that resembles
ribbing. Uses for the Brioche stitch, as well as
advanced techniques in Brioche will also be
discussed. (3 hrs)
Learn the twists and turns of cabling! If you’ve
always wanted to make that cabled scarf, pillow,
afghan, sweater... but the charts and the idea of
twisting fabric leave you stumped? We’ll walk
through how to read cable charts, learn how
to knit left- and right-leaning cables, and even
how to take on those traveling stitches often
featured on hats and socks. (3 hrs)
Fair Isle In Style (Debra Lea)
We will explore the art of Fair Isle Knitting
while creating a button closure cowl (sometimes called a Pidge). We’ll learn how to read
the charts and two different methods for
stranding the yarns. We will also work in the
button loops as we knit our neck warmers.
Handouts will be distributed at class and will
include pattern and chart for cowl. Before
class you should know how to knit, purl, caston, and bind-off. (3 hrs)
Introduction to the History, Methods,
and Styles of Lace Knitting
(Franklin Habit)
Learn the basic principles and techniques of
knitting’s grandest tradition. Subjects to be
covered include: beginnings and endings; chart
reading; lifelines; nupps and other fancy maneuvers; edgings; dealing with mistakes; blocking finished work; and more. Students will
also learn about the great national “schools”
of knitted lace and what makes them unique.
Participants should be familiar with the basics:
casting on, knitting, and purling. (3 hrs)

Knitted Tessellations: Playful &
Powerful Patterns in Practice
Crochet Accents for Knitted Projects
(Franklin Habit)
Whet the appetite of the basically-equipped
knitter with a taste for crochet. The fundamentals of this “other craft” will be discussed.
Basic edgings will be imparted including single
crochet and crab stitch as well as applications
such as seams, applique, and buttonholes. Take
the dreaded c-word and make it work for you!
A hands-on introduction to the creation of
tessellations: motifs that interlock without
gaps or overlaps. Tessellations are as old and
pervasive as design itself; they can be found
in some of the most ancient examples of
human craft, and were famously used by the
artist M.C. Escher. In this class, we will discuss the theories behind tessellating, and put
into practice the basic techniques for creating
tessellated patterns in hand-knitted fabrics.
Pre-requisites: Fluency in the basics of knitting in the round. Students are offered the
choice of working in knit/purl texture patterns
or in two-color (stranded) knitting; those
choosing the latter should be adept at it. A
sense of humor, a taste for adventure, and a
reasonable ability to concentrate are strongly
advised. (3 hrs)
Knitting with Art Yarn
(Christine Long Derks)
Create a fabulous and fun hat or cowl while
learning techniques for knitting with coils art
yarn! A booklet with descriptions of various types
of art yarns and pattern ideas is included in
the class along with the coils hat and coils
cowl patterns to take home! Materials fee:
$25 (includes handspun Treasures coils art
yarn (enough for ONE project, either hat or
cowl), art yarn booklet and two patterns. (3 hrs)
Lace Edgings: Before, During, & After
(Franklin Habit)
Lace edgings are among the most beautiful,
varied and useful patterns in the world of
knitting. In this class, we’ll practice several
techniques for working edgings, including
knitted-on, sewn-on, and simultaneous.
Participants should be comfortable with
basic lace knitting skills, including working
from simple charts. (Completion of the class
“Introduction to the History, Methods and
Styles of Lace Knitting” is sufficient.) (3 hrs)

Embellishment Techniques (Shannon Bower)
Are you interested in adding color or a little
something extra to your knitted garments
or bags? In this class, you will learn basic
embroidery techniques such as outline stitch,
running stitch, and lazy daisy. In addition,
you will learn how to incorporate beads and
felt fabric with applique. (1.25 hrs)
Photographing Your Fiber (Franklin Habit)
Bring your own camera and a project or two,
and learn the basics of lighting, depth of field,
styling and common fiber-photography problems like capturing true color, capturing stitch
definition, and photographing lace. We will also
learn how to make a light tent at home, cheap!
You don’t need fancy equipment to make good
photographs–the emphasis will be on getting
the best possible images using your camera.
Pre-requisites: No prior knowledge of photography is necessary. Just have a camera and a sense
of adventure. (3 hrs)
Spinning for Knitting (Jacey Boggs)
Explore how twist and ply angle and direction
affect different styles of knitting. Then we’ll
learn how to adjust and compensate for the
effects ending up with the perfect handspun
for your particular knitting style. We’ll create
several samples (spinning and knitting), so
bring your wheel (or spindle), a few bobbins, a
lazy kate, a few ounces of fiber, and a few pair
of knitting needles (pick a small size, a medium size, and a larger size). Pre-requisites:
Basic spinning knowledge required. (3 hrs)
