Mission team members cooked up the burgers and fixin’s, along with other picnic foods and a few Kenyan specialties. Children fresh from their week at Vacation Bible School sang one of their favorites, “Njalo,” and gathered on the playground for our unofficial attempt to build the World’s Largest Ice Cream Sundae. Bingo players of all ages tried their luck during seven bingo games and bid on silent auction items. All told, Burgers & Bingo raised close to $4,000 for this year’s Kenya Mission, July 22-31. I scream, you scream, we all scream for the world’s largest ice cream sundae. Children performed one of their favorite tunes from Vacation Bible School. Tricia Henderson, at center, was the winner of the first two rounds of bingo. Mandazi, or East African doughnuts, were served at the mission dinner. Mthr. Barbarito and her visiting grandson, a VBS helper, play bingo. Two children excitedly await the announcement of the winners of the VBS scooter raffle. The young man at left was thrilled to be a winner! July 16, 2013 • Pro Omnibus Sanctis • 3 2013 J2A Pilgrimage ‘Where did you see God today?’ Asking themselves this question daily, the 16 teenagers and four adults sought the “God moments” on their June J2A Pilgrimage to Italy. Whether such moments are experienced individually or communally, as our pilgrims did as part of a faith pilgrimage, they are memorable times upon which every pilgrim can draw inspiration. Our pilgrims traveled to Assisi, the home of St. Francis and St. Clare, considered among the holiest people who ever lived — people who tried simply to be as much like Jesus as humanly possible. Tired and jet-lagged, our pilgrims also experienced radical hospitality from nuns at a guesthouse. They took in masterful works of art, such as Michelangelo’s David, and other works by artists who used their talents to illustrate the stories of Scripture. A pilgrim reflects on the place where St. Francis had his vision of Jesus. In Rome, our travelers witnessed sites that are part of our heritage of Pilgrims at the Pantheon in Rome. Western Civilization, and that are significant to our faith tradition, including the prison that held St. Peter and St. Paul and St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican. At the tomb of St. Peter, our concept of apostolic succession becomes clear. Bishops in the Episcopal Church trace their lineage all the way back to Peter, and are directly connected to the apostles and to Jesus by the laying on of hands. This is something that as Episcopalians, our Pilgrims experienced during their confirmation. Through their J2A Pilgrimage, which is the culmination of a twoyear program, our young people have this unique opportunity to connect matters of history, Scripture, culture, and faith, as they continue their journey toward becoming adult disciples of Jesus Christ.
