A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Hello there PSA!
I hope you all are slowly recovering from
FACT weekend. It’s weird to think that over
1,300 people from across the country were
on our campus just three days ago. It’s weird
to think that just three days ago, I was
running around Lincoln Hall as a Building
Manager, trying to cover the fact that I was
sick and lacking in sleep. But here we are
post-FACT and we may find ourselves in a
lull trying to figure out what to do next.
Try this: reflect on everything that happened this weekend, whether you were a delegate
or on Team FACT. From meeting facilitators to networking to attending to workshops to
enjoying the performances at the variety show, they all played a role in promoting the
theme of Hear & Now. My hope is that you pushed your comfort zone and listened to the
stories of others and even shared your own story. And the great thing is that our stories
are still being written – FACT 2014 is just a small chapter of your story!
Don’t forget to congratulate Shannen, Katreena, and Eddie on a great conference ☺
Not only is November known within PSA as the month of FACT, but Thanksgiving is
coming up in a couple weeks. It’s a time to reflect and what we’re thankful for in our
lives. And there’s a lot I’m thankful for, but I’ll only say a few here:
I am thankful for my parents that work their butts off to provide for me.
I am thankful for siblings that I know will always have my back.
I am thankful for my identity as a Filipino-American.
I am thankful for being able to attend a university where I learn inside and outside the
classroom.
I am thankful to live in a country that allows me to freely practice my faith.
As we leave for Fall Break next weekend – once we relieve all the stress from exams and
projects and papers in those few days before – ask yourself “What am I thankful for?”
And then find a way to show your gratitude. Do what you can to show gratitude for the
many people and opportunities you have in your life.
I wish you all a good a restful break from the busyness of school. Until then, enjoy our
events coming up, hang out with PSA members at the Cube, and continue to add to your
story. I look forward to seeing how your story will affect the lives of others.
Stay classy,
Robert Delfin

A Letter from the Editor
With my first FACT weekend behind me, I found myself
thinking: Now what? After so much running around with Team
FACT and hosting the largest group of pinoys I have ever seen in
one place, it felt great to finally crash Sunday afternoon and get
some decent hours of sleep in. I lay in bed analyzing my thoughts,
and I found that I was sad that my first FACT weekend had zipped
by so quickly, yet joyous at how much I was able to take away
from the conference. Then I realized something: just because
FACT is over, it does not mean that we stop learning, does not
mean that we stop growing as both individuals and an
organization.
One of the most inspiring things to me about FACT was how real the entire conference
made me feel. It forced us to collaborate with each other, to get out of our comfort zones, to
change. I was extremely proud and very moved to hear stories about the new perspectives
some of you gained. Whether it was a more in-depth look at our Filipino culture, or entering a
workshop filled with unfamiliar faces and leaving with new friends and acquaintances, I feel
that those of us in PSA UIUC were more than just hosts; we were also able to glean much
knowledge and experience about ourselves.
My wish for us all as we near the end of this first semester is this: don’t let go of the
lessons FACT taught you. Apply what you learned over the weekend to today. I have been
asking myself constantly, “…and now what?” Where do we go from here? How can I maximize
the lessons learned this weekend and develop these lessons into values, morals, beliefs?
Change can sometimes be scary and uncomfortable; it may even seem daunting sometimes.
Trust me, change will not happen overnight; just like a plant, it must be tended to
daily and given the right nutrients and light to eventually blossom into something much more
beautiful than the seed initially planted.
Here is my challenge to you this next month: take some time to reflect and think
about what you are thankful for. Then, think about things you may look over, things you
may take for granted. I challenged myself and I challenge you to question why you feel the
way you do about things, and if you don’t like the way you feel, what would you have to do to
make a change, to make an improvement? I hope this challenge helps you realize your
potential and lights a fire inside that pushes you to become a better person; because as you
develop and grow, PSA grows and develops as a whole.
Your Proud Newsletter,
Aaron Gamalinda
FACT REFLECTIONS PART 1
Janea Pontigon
Another year, and another FACT has come and
gone. I had a unique experience and perspective
with FACT this year considering I was a member
of FACT Pack. It is always a rewarding feeling to
know that your hard work and contributions is
greater than you would ever know because it
was for a purpose bigger than any of us. The
sleepless nights and working through hunger
becomes worth it when you scroll through
Instagram and see people's gratitude for FACT
and PSA UIUC.
With a recent interview with one of our sponsors, GMA Pinoy TV, I was able to share and reflect
on why FACT is so important to me. They asked me a multitude of questions, but only one
almost brought me to tears: why should young adults get involved in programs like FACT.
While giving them my answer I felt my heart racing, face getting red, and tears in the corner of
my eyes because I just had so much passion for what I was doing and who I was doing it for. It
is important for all of us to get involved in FACT and our Filipino organizations because it
empowers us. The east and west coast have a very strong Filipino presence and everyone
around the world takes note of that. But what about us, here in the Midwest? We have a voice
too. We have our accomplishments and we have our goals. I am involved because I never want
to forget who I am, where I came from, and where I am going. So long as Filipinos, and Asian
Americans need a space to come together to learn, and grow from each other I will stay
involved with this community because it's just too important. And I encourage all of you to do
the same!
Reed Cabral
My second time at FACT and hopefully next year it keeps
getting better! I’m so grateful that I was able to be part of the
team that helps make FACT happen this year. FACT is an
experience like no other. I can’t think of a better opportunity
where you can meet people from across the nation, learn
about Philippine culture and heritage, and learn about
yourself. Performing on the stage at Foellinger was
unbelievable and I’ll never forget the feeling of over a
thousand people cheering you on for doing something you
love.
Shoutout to Barkada for dedicating so much time and effort
to this year’s performance!
Shoutout to my Co-Chair and one of my best friends Hai for
being there through all of the ups and downs and for always
giving it your all :3
FACT REFLECTIONS PART 2
Michael Nguyen
Let me just say that every year, FACT has been surreal. Seeing so many old faces as
well as meeting new faces has always been one of my favorite things about FACT. I
remember my freshman year where I came into the conference not knowing what to
expect. The only thing I knew was from what I've heard from all the upperclassmen
and my sisters and cousins went to Loyola. It was more than I've expected; I loved
every minute of it. I never met so many people in one weekend in my life who were all
so friendly. The number of friend requests on Facebook was unreal.
Now let's fast forward to my
sophomore year when I was CoCultural with Janea. Even though
I did not actively went to
workshops, I loved FACT for a
different reason. After working
behind the scenes with Team
FACT, I saw the amount of hardwork, dedication, and passion
everyone shared for FACT. It gave
me a deeper understanding of
how FACT can Leave its Mark in
each and everyone of its delegates. So much so, that we can work together to create
this amazing annual conference. My cultural performance that me and Janea
organized will forever be engrained in my mind as one of the best moments of my
time in PSA. All of the FACT 2013 Barkada members will know what I'm talking about.
Once we hit that last pose, we were greeted by a deafening roar from the crowd that
had chills coursing through my body. The unbelievable support we received from that
crowd was sublime. In that single moment, it gave me the "high" that lasted for
weeks. I can still see and Hear the crowd even Now after a year has passed.
Now this year, I can say the exact same thing, my single-most favorite thing about
FACT is performing. Speaking through movement to represent a culture, even though
it's not my own, I try to do justice. Every year, FACT has been surreal and it just gets
bigger and better. I just can't wait until FACT 2015.
Woo! FACT!
FACT REFLECTIONS PART 3
Daphne Agustin
Every year of FACT has been a unique experience for
me, but I guess there's something about being a senior,
being on MAFA board, being "old", I guess, that makes
it a little more...different. From helping work the
conference with PSA to facilitating a workshop with the
MAFA board to being on top of the fourth level of
Bangko, if it makes any sense, I spent a lot of my time
standing up, surrounded by people sitting down,
looking straight up at me. As if, without a doubt, I had
all the answers. To be honest, aside from paying
attention to the workshops I was bouncing in the first
and second session, I really didn't feel like a delegate,
(which makes a whole lot of sense considering the fact
that the word "delegate" wasn't on either of the two
badges that I had to wear that weekend...). But as I've
gotten older and move on to bigger and better things,
it really made me think about what FACT was to me.
Could I really learn as much as these delegates do
when I'm running around working the whole time?
The answer was yes. Although, clearly, my experience is completely different from the people
in wearing white badges. This year's FACT was my place to take everything I'd learned in
terms of leadership for my past 4 years in college and to share and apply it. To be the person
that inspires future leaders to find it in themselves to be the best person they can be. To talk
to these professionals-- many of whom (at least among all the ones that I spoke to that
weekend), were very close in age to me--who've just come out of an experience similar to
mine and to relate to them so closely. More so than I would have as a sophomore or junior. To
finally be in a weird place where I no longer felt like a delegate was a very enlightening
experience for me.
However, it was at FACT where all those "senior jitters" finally hit me. The last time I'd ever
work this conference. The last time I'd perform at FACT on the Foellinger stage with Barkada. I
remember talking to one of the facilitators (one of which who actually wasn't anywhere near
my age), and he asked me what was the most rewarding part of FACT. For me, in the three
years I've attended, and the two I've danced on stage, it was always the cultural performance.
Because it is a part of me that I cherish the most--being able to pour my heart onto that stage,
and to perform for something that's outside myself: this beautiful Filipino culture--one of the
many reasons why Filipinos do come together for something as amazing as FACT
FACT REFLECTIONS PART 4
Nicole Liwanag
FACT 2014 was one to remember. It was my last one as
a student. I was ready to be a part of Team FACT as a
member for Variety Show, because V-Show 4 Lyfe. The
past 2 years I’ve been a part of Variety Show as an
intern and as a co-manager. When I found out D-Trix
was our headliner, I flipped! Loved that guy since I was
in high school. One day in class, Shannen asked if I
wanted to be his assistant! I freaked out even more,
because YAS. OF COURSE. Fast forward to one week
later when D-Trix had to drop. I was a sad camper ☹.
But lo and behold I get a call from Shannen asking if I
wanted to be JR Aquino’s assistant! Bruh. Of course.
Kudos to the coordinators for getting an awesome
headliner in a week.
Once Friday hit, I was super nervous and intimidated. I
was going to be hanging out with JR Aquino and his
tour manager, Denise. Being in charge of them is a lot,
because you want to make a great impression. Katie
and I were planning on picking up JR and Denise around 7, but Katie got a text from her saying
they were caught in mad traffic. They ended up coming at 8:30. When we saw their bus arrive,
my heart was thumping! They got off the bus and we helped get their stuff. It was smooth
sailing after that. We ate a lot and talked about random things. The experience was so surreal,
because they’re such chill people.
Saturday was going great, but fifteen minutes before Opening Session was supposed to start, I
get a call from Shannen asking to emcee it!! Oh my g-o-s-h. Of course I’m going to say yes,
because I’d do anything for them. Off to Lincoln I go and get ready. Luckily, Marc was helping
me out so it was all good! Speaking in front of hundreds of delegates was not easy and
definitely nerve-wracking, but I did it! Had to improv, but wow! I think that it was fitting for my
last FACT to do something completely out of my comfort zone ☺ I will never forget that and it
will go down as one of my favorite experiences ever! Thanks again Katreena, Eddie, and
Shannen for asking me and believing I could do it.
Variety Show was awesome as always. It was weird seeing it and not having anything to do
with it. Great job Allan, Annalyn, and Larry!! So proud of you guys. Seeing JR live for the first
time was fantastic. I’ve always wanted to hear him live and it finally happened. Lots of
hilarious things happened after that, but that’s between us ;)
To Katreena, Eddie, Shannen, FACT Pack, Team FACT, and Katie – we did it! Together. As one.

ALL SAINT’S DAY
Each year on the first of November, many Filipinos celebrate Araw ng mga
Santo, or All Saint’s Day. All Saints Day is a universal Christian Feast that honors and
remembers all Christian saints, known and unknown. The word "saint" means
"holy/sacred one." It is a Middle English word that came from the Old French sant,
which in turn was based on the Late Latin sanctus. But there is more to saints and
sainthood than mere definitions! The teaching of the saints and sainthood has a long
and varied history in the Christian Church. Specifically, the question, "Who are the
saints?" has been answered in ways that are often contradictory and divisive. Put
simply, since the time of the 16th Century Reformation, Christians have often
vehemently disagreed with one another over who the saints are, how the saints
became saints, and the work that they do.
What is the disagreement about? Generally speaking, Roman and Eastern
(Orthodox) Catholics have tended to define saints rather narrowly as referring only to
a small group of deceased Christians who, while on earth, manifested extraordinary
piety. Furthermore, such
Christians officially become
saints only after being
canonized by the Pope
(Roman Catholics but not
Orthodox). Roman
Christians also believe that
these saints intercede for us
before God and can aid
those who pray to them.
They therefore urge their
followers to venerate and
invoke the saints for help
and mercy. Reformation
Churches (esp. Lutheran), on the other hand, have broadly defined saints to be all
believers in Jesus Christ, both living and dead. They became saints, these churches
teach, through faith in Jesus Christ and holy Baptism. According to Lutherans, the
"work" of the saints in heaven is largely undefined by Scripture. If heavenly saints do
pray for Christians on earth, say the Lutherans, nowhere in Scripture are believers
encouraged to invoke them or look to them for aid, let alone for forgiveness or
salvation. Such praying and venerating the saints can easily lead to an idolatrous
robbing Christ of His glory as the only Savior and Mediator.
The Orthodox Churches observe it on the first Sunday after Pentecost.
Ephrem Syrus (d. 373) mentions a Feast dedicated the saints in his writings. St.
Chrysostom of Constantinople (d. 407) was the first Christian we know of to assign the
Feast to a particular day: the first Sunday after Pentecost.
The Feast did not become established in the Western Church, however, until
the Roman bishop Boniface IV consecrated the Pantheon at Rome to Christian usage
as a church on May 13, 609 or 610.
The Feast was observed
annually on this date until the time
of Bishop of Rome, Gregory III (d.
741) when its observance was
shifted to Nov. 1, since on this date
Gregory dedicated a chapel in the
Basilica of St. Peter's to "All the
Saints.” It was Gregory IV (d. 844),
who in 835 ordered the Feast of All
Saints to be universally observed on
Nov. 1.
As mentioned above, All Saints Day is celebrated by Roman Catholics, the
Orthodox, Anglicans, and Lutherans However, because of their differing
understandings of the identity and function of the saints, what these churches do on
the Feast of All Saints differs widely. For Roman Catholics, the Orthodox, and to some
extent, Anglicans, All Saints is a day to remember, thank God for, but also to venerate
and pray to the saints in heaven for various helps. For Lutherans the day is observed
by remembering and thanking God for all saints, both dead and living. It is a day to
glorify Jesus Christ, who by his holy life and death has made the saints holy through
Baptism and faith.
So who are the saints, according to the New Testament? The New Testament
consistently considered living Christians on earth to be saints, holy ones, holy priests
before God. Furthermore, there is no evidence of a distinction being made between
"ordinary" Christians on the one hand, and saints on the other. Christians are saints
and saints are Christians. Finally, though living Christians on earth are most often
referred to as saints or holy, there are many passages which seem to point to all
believers on earth and in heaven together, a reality later described as "the
communion of saints."
FRESHMAN REFLECTIONS
Chelsea Tuvila
My first year so far in PSA has been absolutely great.
Although I admit it was a bit intimidating and hard to find
my place within this immense group, I think I have found my
comfort zone by now. My AKA’s and my real blood brother
are the main reasons why I began to feel this way. They
made my transition into U of I feel effortless and easygoing.
Through talking with my Ate Charlene during our food dates,
goofing off with my Kuya Aldrin, having heart-to-hearts
while walking my Ate Jackie’s dog at night, and sleeping
over at my Kuya Rick’s apartment when I miss home, I have
developed a sense of what it truly means to feel a part of a
family who will offer me guidance, support, and love. In
addition to the love my Ates, Kuyas, and sibs gave me, my
participation in Barkada for this year’s FACT Variety Show increased my sense of belonging in
this organization. Ever since I was nine, I have been dancing Filipino cultural dances in a small
dance troupe called Transfiguration; I loved the adrenaline and rush after a successful
performance on stage with my closest friends. However, because of the distance, I was not
able to continue dancing for them. Barkada brought back these memories and reminded me
of why I love to dance and be able to express my culture’s values and traditions. Being a part
of Barkada was a life-changing experience for me, and I am so blessed and honored to be able
to have these new relationships I’ve created with my Regatones fambam and with everyone
else. We struggled together. We worked hard together. We succeeded together---like a family.
A warm, loving, and supportive family. I am so glad to be a part of PSA for these amazing
opportunities, and I cannot wait to see what the future holds for me!
Kevin Tun
I had a great time performing for Barkada
during FACT, and it was great getting to know
everyone dancing alongside me. It was a bit
unnerving to perform in front of so many people and
I was really hungry like the whole time, but I was also
really proud of the performance we put together, so
then I was like really excited for it too. I wanted to
show that off, and at the end of it all I was like
yaaass. The energy from the audience was great,
and I feel like all our hard work really paid off. I
honestly can’t wait for the next one, because this
one was dope. And when we all got backstage and
huddled together, it was so touching :’) I am cry.
Jose Dizon
PSA is a wonderful organization to be a part of and the
group has already given me memories that I will cherish.
When I was first coming into the university, I was completely
alone as I was the only one from my high school in Los
Angeles who was brave enough to go into Illinois and face a
whole new environment. Therefore, I had to make an effort
in order to know others since I didn't know any one at all.
Joining PSA is a decision that I am glad to have taken as not
only did I continue to appreciate my culture and my roots,
but it also has gotten me to know awesome people that I am
delighted to have met and known!
This past weekend's FACT event was one of the best events that I have ever attended.
Learning about the old writing of the Philippines through the Tongues of our Ancestors
workshop by Unipro was really interesting and encouraged me to find out more myself
about the old writings of the Babayin writing system. FACT also allowed me to expand my
perspective and get to know people from other schools. Everyone bonded through the
appreciation of the Filipino culture! The Variety Show was amazing to watch and many of the
acts were one of a kind with their performances! Everything that I went through with everyone
was something that I will always remember and I cannot wait for next year's event!
Maraming salamat sa lahat ang mga tao mula sa PSA! In this journey that we call life, PSA has
already made my freshman year at U of I memorable!
Trang Nguyen
One of the things that initially encouraged
me to join PSA was how genuinely
welcoming everyone was. Since the
beginning, I find that the members of PSA
never hesitate to reach out to get to know us
freshmen and to help us adjust to college.
Through the AKA program, I have gotten the
chance to meet some great ates and a kuya
that are super supportive and caring! My first
FACT conference was such a valuable and
fun experience that allowed me to learn,
connect, and be inspired. Also, by performing with PSA Barkada at the Variety Show, I was
able to assist in representing the Filipino culture while creating great memories with everyone
else in PSA. Cultural dancing was one of the things that I was looking forward to the most. The
pleasure of being on stage with such a wonderful group of people was indescribable and was
something that I would definitely want to experience again. Without a doubt, these past few
months with PSA have provided me with knowledge about another culture that helped me in
learning more about myself, a new family, lasting friendships, and memories that I would
want to relive. I cannot wait for more events and performances with PSA!
PSA – What are you thankful for?

Katreena, Eddie, & Shannen: YOU DID IT! I'm super proud of you all for creating a wonderful
conference. So many tough obstacles throughout the past 9 months and yet you overcame
them. Who else would be able to book a headliner in less than a week?!? YOU GO. Thank you
for giving me the opportunity to assist JR & Denise. It was a fantastic time! So surreal. Again, I
honestly never would have thought I'd be in that kind of position, so thank you for trusting
me. Lastly, thank you for calling me 15 minutes before Opening Session was supposed to start
and asking me to emcee. That was one of the greatest experiences I had out of all the FACT
conferences! I've never spoken in front of HUNDREDS of strangers before. My heart pooped
once I was on stage and saw them hehe. Definitely going to be remembering that forever!
