 A THOUSAND TIMES GOOD NIGHT
Rebecca is one of the world’s top war photographers. On assignment while
photographing a female suicide bomber in Kabul, she gets to near, and gets badly hurt.
Back home another bomb drops. Her husband and daughters can no longer bear the
thought of her dying while at work. She is given an ultimatum: Her work, or her family
life. The choice seems obvious.
The hushed atmosphere. The ritual washing. The cautious fastening of the belt and vest on
the woman’s body... A religious ceremony? If only the belt and vest weren’t packed with
explosives. We are in Kabul, accompanying a woman about to unleash death and
destruction. The operation is being captured on film by an embedded photographer,
Rebecca, one of the world’s foremost war-zone photo journalists. But this time Rebecca very
nearly loses her life...
Back home, her husband Marcus assures her that he loves her, but is unwilling to continue
this life of fear and uncertainty. Especially since they have two daughters, Lisa (7) and Steph
(13), who need their mother. Steph, in particular, is withdrawing into a private world that has
no room for her mother.
Rebecca swears to Marcus that she will never go to a war zone again. Yet the conviction that
her photos can make a difference keeps pulling at her resolve, making it difficult for her to
live a normal life as mother and wife. Then comes an offer to photograph a refugee camp in
Kenya, a place allegedly so safe that daughter Steph is allowed to join her mother...

3 ERIK POPPE
Erik is one of Norway’s most acclaimed and well-known directors. He is a pillar in the film
industry in Norway; many directors and aspiring directors seek him out for advice and
inspiration. Erik was granted financial support from the Norwegian Film Institute in the first
call (2010) of the Production Slate Funding. He received sup- port for 2-3 films. Grenade is
the first of these films.
Erik has previously directed 3 feature films. Schpaaa (1998) Hawaii,Oslo (2004) and Troubled
Water (deUSYNLIGE) (2008). Ha- waii, Oslo was the Norwegian entry for Best Foreign
Language Film in 2005 for the Academy Awards. Hawaii,Oslo still withholds the reign as the
film in Norway that has received the majority of good reviews from the critics (the largest
amount of the character 6, out of 6 on their scale). Troubled Water attended the Hamptons
Interna- tional Film Festival in 2008 and consequently received the Audience Award, The
Golden Starfish for Best Narrative Feature. Erik Poppe has received the honors The
Norwegian Film Critics Award in 2005 for Hawaii,Oslo, and in 2009 for Troubled Water.
Director Erik Poppe covered war conflicts himself for many years as a photographer for
Reuters and other media. With its crackling tension and compelling authenticity, “A Thousand
Times Good Night” reflects the director’s own experiences in this dangerous field.
