R A NEW INNOVATIVE MESOPOROUS NANOSTRUCTURED MATERIAL ECAM® (REactive CArbon Material) is a new mesoporous nanostructured carbon, that exploits the special characteristics of graphenes, having extraordinary properties in terms of reactivity and crystallinity, with excellent results proved for recalcitrant compounds removal from wastewater that place it on the market as a unique product of its kind and extremely interesting for use in environmental and energy fields. RECAM® has been invented by Ing. Ivano Aglietto and industrially developed by SA Envitech which is the brand owner and the first world producer of bulk quantities of nanostructured material for industrial purposes. The RECAM® base structure comprises graphene planes that are modelled and inclined during the production process to form a structure with regular cells and channels, providing the material with special electricity-conduction and absorption properties. RECAM® is not a mixture of graphene planes, but a mesoporous nanostructure with a high specific surface area, with sloping polyhedrons, the sides of which comprise multi-layer graphene planes. “ To d a t e , R E C A M ® i s t h e f i r s t a n d o n l y nanostructured material on the market that exploits graphene’s special properties and is produced on an industrial scale.” Read more about this page on web: sa-envitech.com RECAM® is hydrophobic, inert, non-flammable, completely stable, and has no negative impacts on the environment. As it is inert, it passed all the toxicity tests established by the Italian Ministry of the Environment. No solvents, no heavy metals and no traces of other toxic compounds are present within RECAM®, even in ppb. RECAM®’s efficiency and compatibility with the environment have been certified by the Italian Ministry of the Environment and CNR (National Research Center). RECAM® is a nanostructured material. Nanofibres, multi-walled carbon nanotubes and other nanoparticles which are integrated in some specific grades of RECAM® are not free to move, in fact they are blocked inside the cells of the nanostructured material. The medium size of RECAM® powder is around a few microns, not a nanomaterial, thus, no potential risks are observable. RECAM® can be be used for different kind of applications, like listed in the following picture. Currently SA Envitech has developed the first patented industrial applications for water treatment, wastewater treatment and gas filtration. New upcoming applications of RECAM® are expected in the near future in particular for soil remediation and for DSSCs solar cells. You can download here the Certificate of Ministery of Environment. “The research and development of RECAM® started in 2006 and now with the new facility is possible to produce 55 tons/month. ” For RECAM®‘s production no chemicals are necessary, no solvents nor acids. The whole production is based on a new innovative process which enables to transform the carbon material after a physical process. T he application of most innovative developments in the field of nanotechnology, and particularly the use of RECAM®, enables to emphasize and fully develop the benefits of advanced oxidation and contaminants absorption processes, reaching levels of efficiency and economy much higher than traditional water purification approaches. WATER AND WASTEWATER TREATMENT PROCESSES ® WITH RECAM “The treatment processes based on the use of RECAM® are a new, ground-breaking approach in the water purification technology scenario.” The pocesses differ from traditional treatment technologies due to their high capacity rate for removing a wide range of contaminants, the reduced investment and running costs, the lack of sludge production and the simple configuration of plants, which can be sized according to the amount of water to be treated and the concentrations to be achieved at discharge. The water and wastewater treatment processes developed with RECAM® are: filtration, electroxidation, nano Fenton, sonolysis and photocatalysis. All the processes are subject to international patents and are SA Envitech’s property. Main benefits are: • • • • • possible to treat almost every kind of wastewater and a wide range of contaminants; no sludge production; system configuration that is both simple to build and modular; low investment costs; chemicals used only for pH corrections. The special regular cell structures comprising graphene planes and the presence of nano-crystals inside them provide RECAM® with unique features in terms of removal of a wide range of contaminants, particularly of recalcitrant compounds. During the contact and filtration process between the contaminants and RECAM® there is no chemical reaction or transformation. There is therefore no risk of unwanted reaction from by-products or other contaminants that were not present in the original water. The ability to remove organic compounds, cations and anions at the same time makes this new filtering material unique in its kind. The RECAM® filtration plants are simple to construct, modular and do not require high pressure. They work within a range of 0.2÷0.7 bar, as well as by gravity, thus requiring no pumps and may work without consuming energy, when necessary. The RECAM® filtration process is especially recommended for: • removal of microorganisms, bactericidal and bacteriostatic disinfection of water • high removal rate of light and heavy hydrocarbons • removal of organic substances with high reduction levels of COD • removal of PAH, PCB and BTEX • removal of MTBE, guaranteeing values <1 µg/l • removal of arsenic, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, cyanides, boron, iron, zinc, manganese and manganese, atrazine • treatment of water contaminated by chlorinated solvents • entrapment of asbestos fibres. As RECAM is a stable, inert material, no hazardous substances are released into the water and no by-products are produced. Unlike other drinking water treatments, such as reverse osmosis, for example, which produces almost totally demineralised water, RECAM® does not alter the content of compounds that are precious for our metabolism, such as calcium or sodium: these elements, essential for human health, remain in the water and are assimilated by our bodies. ® FILTRATION ® PROCESS WITH RECAM Read more about this page on web: sa-envitech.com A ADVANCED OXIDATION PROCESSES WITH ® RECAM dvanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are those processes which are based on production and utilization of hydroxyl radicals. AOPs have considerable similarities due to the participation of hydroxyl radicals in most mechanisms that are operative during the reaction. Hydroxyl radicals are extremely unstable and reactive because of their high oxidation potential. Since the reactions between hydroxyl radicals and organic species are extremely fast and nonspecific, these reactions are almost always controlled by the mass transfer of hydroxyl radical to the organic species or production of hydroxyl radicals. The kinetics is first order with respect to hydroxyl radical concentration and to the pollutant. Kinetic constants are in the range of 108÷1010 M-1 s-1, whereas radical concentration, even in steady state, in these processes is between 10-12 and 10-10 M. Therefore, the pseudo first order constant is in the range of 10-4÷0.1 s-1. Given that the hydroxyl radical is such an unstable and reactive species, it must be generated continuously ‘‘in situ” through chemical or photochemical or sonochemical reactions. “The use of RECAM® for AOPs give the possibility to use these processes in a cost-effective manner, without limitation in terms of organic contaminants removal.” The application of RECAM®, enables to emphasize and fully develop the benefits of advanced oxidation and contaminants absorption processes, reaching levels of efficiency and economy much higher than traditional water purification approaches. OIL SPILLS REMEDIATION ® WITH RECAM Read more about this page on web: sa-envitech.com T here are many lessons one can learn from the Exxon Valdez oil spill in 1989 and the recent disaster in Gulf of Mexico. To summarize, effects on the ecosystem mainly concerned the intertidal zone with seabird and marine mammal populations. One of the frequently asked questions concerning is: “How many animals were killed?” No one is able to answer this question. Eight weeks after BP’s well ruptured, the impact on marine life became increasingly visible with images of dead or dying hermit crabs and brown pelicans trapped and weighed down in dark syrupy oil while spawning Atlantic bluefin tuna are threatened in the Gulf of Mexico – only one of the two places in the world where they can reproduce themselves. Fresh rows broke out after it became public that endangered sea turtles and other marine creatures were corralled into 500 square-mile “burn fields” and burnt alive in operations intended to contain the oil. Concerns regarding public health risks and long-term impacts on the food chain in the Gulf of Mexico where one-third of the water, or 78,264 square miles, have been closed to fishing, are growing. The technologies usually applied for remediation and containment of oil spills present several critical points and are not effective at all for many situation. RECAM® can be used both like a barrier system and for oil removal from sea water. In the case of a barrier, it is sufficient to spread the material on the water surface for it to start to form a uniform and homogeneous barrier which does not let hydrocarbons go through. On the contrary, it starts to attract the oil towards the barrier. In a second phase, it is possible to spread RECAM® on the water surface and start to recover the oil with a process that it is not a simple sorption process, but an action of capturing the oil inside the nanostructured material. download THE scientific ARTICLE Once RECAM® detains the oil, there are no risks for the oil to be released in the water or in the environment because RECAM® does not only absorb oil but it entraps hydrocarbons inside its nanostructure. Once the oil is trapped there is no way for it to be released. This phenomenon is possible thanks to the affinity of RECAM® towards non polar compounds and its hydrophobic behavior. In order to recover oil which is not floating on the sea surface but in depth, it is possible to inject RECAM® material from the deep water. Indeed, it starts to attract the oil and encloses it, then slowly rises to the surface of the water, with the trapped hydrocarbons, where they can easily be recovered. It is possible to recover RECAM® with an easy and fast way, just by using nets. RECAM® material can be burnt with the oil recovered. During the combustion process, no toxic gases are released because RECAM® is completely inert and it is not infflammable. Hydrocarbons are burnt providing an energy production and RECAM® can then be used again to recover oil. “RECAM® is unique both in terms of efficiency in hydrocarbons removal and in terms of being eco-friendly, particularly when compared to other products It does not produce waste and is regenerable.” RECAM® may be regenerated and the crude oil is recovered without any traces of water. It is also important to emphasize that RECAM® is more effective for heavy oils and crude oil than for light hydrocarbons. This is an important difference if compared with other products available on the market. In the table below RECAM® is compared to other products available for oil spill remediation.
