A new cultural option for the people of Curitiba
The Paço da Liberdade (Palace
of Freedom), inaugurated on the
29th of March, is open to the
public so that they can admire the
architecture and visit the exposition “Avesso da Possibilidade”:
paintings by Geraldo Leão and
Raul Cruz ; and a display of photos taken during the restoration of
the building. Situated in the old
Paço Municipal (City Hall) – the
only building in Curitiba listed by
the National Institute of Historic
and Artistic Heritage -, located in
Generoso Marques Square in the
centre of the city, the space will
be managed by Sesc (Commerce
Social Service). According to the
director of the Paço da Liberdade
Sesc Parana Unit, Celise Helena
Niero, around five million Reals
were spent on the restoration.
“The visitors will be able to enjoy a dynamic cultural agenda,
with various events”, stated Ms.
Niero.
According to Jonas Prates,
Sesc’s cultural coordinator, the
building was received empty.
“We defined innovation and access as basic guidelines for the
use of the space.” Many of the
projects for the Paço’s use were
selected by tender, which, in Mr.
Prates’ view, serves as a form of
democratisation of access to, and
use of, the space.
Each of the building’s floors is
designated a different use. On
the first floor, there will be people
to guide the public on the use of
the Internet, an interactive panel

with a database of the State’s cultural productions, a coffee shop
– which will promote music and
moments of reflection – as well
as a bookshop, which will sell local designers’ products, selected
by tender. The second floor has
been prepared to house an electronic art workshop. It will be
used for long-term courses; training courses for artists with some
experience; cinema courses for local producers; and to hold artist
forums.

the site of a multi-lingual room
to stage musical and theatrical
shows, as well as moments of
reflection, and also a recording
studio. “This studio will make
access to quality recording easier
for local bands, as in private studios this service is still not very

affordable”, said Mr. Prates. The
selection of bands will also happen by tender. An ample exposition space for various arts, such
as paintings and sculptures, is already in service on the top floor.
The gallery was opened with oil
paintings by the local artist Fernando Velloso. In addition, Sesc
forecasts the external occupation
of Generoso Marques Square,
with urban intervention. “The
cultural centre was envisaged to
be a multifunctional place, as a
space to recognise and divulge
Parana’s culture”, said Ms. Niero.
The inauguration of the new
Paço da Liberdade was part of the
commemorations of the 316th
anniversary of the city of Curitiba.
Since its opening, the centre has
enjoyed a daily average of 1,300
visitors. More than 8,000 children from the municipal school
system have passed through its
doors, thanks to a partnership
between Sesc and the Municipal
Secretariat for Education.

Brazil Potentially Largest in
Renewable Energies
Recently a UN report indicated that Brazil is the largest
renewable energies market in the
world. Today, 46% of all energy
in Brazil comes from renewable
sources, with an emphasis on its
enormous hydroelectric capacity
and a mature bioethanol industry.
Brazil is also a world leader in
renewable energy financing. Last
year, BNDES (National Development Back) was the largest global
financial provider for projects in
this sector.
Biofuel production has been
growing rapidly due to Brazil’s
abundance of arable land, water
resources, government support, a
growing economically active population and relatively low cost of
living. When it comes to ethanol,
specifically, Brazil is both a producer and exporter. Today, 80%
of all automobiles are flexible-fuel vehicles and 52% of fuel consumed by small vehicles is ethanol. On the other hand, Brazilian
ethanol exports have increased
46% over the last year, especially
to European countries and to the
United States.
This will be the subject of
much discussion at the 4th International Bioenergy Congress and
the 1st Brazilian Congress on Distributed Generation and Renewable Energies, and will take place
from August 18th - 21st, 2009,
in Curitiba. During that time,
46 lecturers and panelists from
Brazil and several other countries
will be presenting important information on the current state
and perspectives on renewable
energies on our planet.
Besides the Congress, the 2nd
BioTech Fair - International Bioenergy and Biofuel Technology
Fair - will also occur. A complete
biodiesel plant will be assembled

and working during the event,
showing the production process
and its application. The 22 meter
long unit is part of the Biominas
project and can be towed by tractor-trailer.

Curitiba Metro Logo Features Crest Colors and Follows

already out on the streets, as well
as on the uniforms and safety
equipment of the technicians
from the City Hall and the Novo
Modal consortium, the winning
bidder for the execution of the
basic construction project. Five
technical teams are working on
the South CIC - Santa Cândida
section, where the Metro’s first
line, the Blue Line, will run.
Several other teams are responsible for the interference studies,
which will identify existing electrical power line, water and telephone systems in the ground.
“It’s the first step for a project
that’s extremely relevant for the
present and future of the city, and
which will attract more people to
use public transportation,” states
mayor Beto Richa.
Colored according to the city’s
crest with green and red, the logo
of Curitiba’s Metro’s features a
central “M”, enveloped by a “C”
and a green cylinder (representing the tunnels through which
the new vehicles will travel). The
logo is the work of designer Marcos Minini, from Master adver-

There will be a 500 meters
long elevated section on Winston Churchill avenue, from
Pinheirinho Terminus to the
BR-476 highway. The line will
then run at ground level along
the highway until it reaches the
South-CIC Terminus, where a
new compound will be added including a parking courtyard, an

Maintenance Center, with special

the identity of Curitiba’s Metrô,
Minini analyzed 169 metro logos
from Brazil and from other countries. Out of those, 83 use the letter M, almost a global standard
for metro identification.
The goal was to define an easily
recognizable logo, which could
be applied to different surfaces.
“Once the Metro’s logo is born,
so is the metro,” claims Minini.
“Just seeing the logo, and people
start to get used to the city’s new
transport system.”
Curitiba’s City Hall predicts
that the metro’s Blue Line will be
22 km long, stretching from the

access for Metro vehicles.
The project anticipates 21
boarding and exit stations
throughout the line, with an average distance of 1 km between
each. The vehicle will be light
and will transport 1,150 passengers in each system, consisting of
four motorized cars. The network
will transport 500 thousand passengers a day.
Novo Modal consortium is
responsible for the preliminary
studies concerning compatibility
with existing projects; for topographic, geotechnical, geologic,
hydrologic and interference
studies; for geometrical, ground
levelling and subterranean construction projects; for railway
and buildings superstructure
(stations, termini, control center
and administrative building); for
fixed stock and rolling stock; and
for budget development.
Studies and Projects Relating to Construction
Five teams are working on
the area that stretches from Pinheirinho to Santa Cândida, collecting subsoil samples for lab
analysis. Probing this section is
another step for the Metro Studies and Projects currently underway. The analysis of the sample
material will indicate how deep
below ground level Curitiba’s
Metro system will be set, as well
as point out structural solutions
for the construction process.
This phase is part of the geological and geotechnical studies
provided by Novo Modal Consortium (comprised of Trends,
Engefoto, Esteio and Vega companies), the winning bidder for
Studies and Projects. Since the
plan is for Curitiba’s Metro to
run from Santa Cândida to South
CIC, the next phase be the probing of the area stretching from
Pinheirinho to South CIC.

The project’s elaboration is part
of the Municipal Plan for Urban
Mobility and Integrated Transport. With an increase in the
number of cyclists, the tendency
is for the City’s atmospheric and
noise pollution levels to diminish.
As well as new cycle-paths, cycle-lanes will be implanted; lanes
demarcated on the streets designated exclusively for cyclists who
will circulate separated from motorised vehicles. The first stretch
to be analysed for implantation

under the project is on Marechal
Floriano Avenue, between the
Green Line (Linha Verde) and
the Boqueirao Terminus.
To attend cyclists’ demands,
access-controlled bicycle-parks
will also be installed in strategic locations, where cyclists can
safely park their bikes for as long
as they like. Another possibility
is the “cycle-stop”, a special place
to chain up bicycles for short periods of time. These would be
found all over the city.
The cycle-path expansion
should affect the metropolitan
region. According to Ippuc, the
idea is that the forthcoming removal of the railway branch-line
from Curitiba, Pinhais and Almirante Tamandare will make the
creation of a cycle-path network
of metropolitan proportions possible. The need for expansion is
proven by the poll carried out
by City Hall in 2008, which revealed that one in four users of
Curitiba’s cycle-paths lives in the
metropolitan region.
New buses
reduce
pollution
The actions being taken by
Curitiba City Hall to promote
the reduction of pollution by the
Mass Transport System were highlighted in the Council Chamber
in Curitiba. The president of the
house, Councillor Joao Claudio
Derosso, emphasised in particular the adoption of new engines
to be used in the buses that are to
substitute those currently in service; by December around 60%
of the existing fleet will have been
renewed.
As well as being adapted to
meet the accessibility guidelines;
which represents a great advance
in social inclusion, the new
buses are driven by Euro 3 electronic engines, technology that
promotes the almost complete
combustion of diesel fuel, reducing pollutant emission by 60%.
Pollutants are the toxic residue of
the combustion process and are
released into the atmosphere in
the form of smoke and soot.
“In this way, in addition to being the state capital with the largest green area per capita in the
country, Curitiba will soon be one
of the cities with the lowest level
of pollution caused by the Mass
Transport System, which should
improve the air quality greatly”,
explained the Councillor.
With the new Euro 3 engines,
the bus fleet will have emitted by
the end of this year around 2,800
tonnes less of carbon monoxide,
nitrogen oxides, total hydrocarbons and particulate matter.
“City Hall is making important
contributions both to the environment and to the reduction of
gases that cause the greenhouse
effect by opting for vehicles that
pollute less, which will also guarantee an improvement in quality of life for the people of Curitiba.”

are called ‘curry’ outside India,
has become a worldwide favourite. Most countries have their
own version of the Indian curry.
In Japan it is very sweet and in
Thailand an Indian-style chicken curry is served alongside Thai
curries. In the more cosmopolitan cities around the world, you
can buy samosas (fried snacks
with a filling) and naan bread
alongside local snacks.

Take these everyday steps
to protect your health:
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw
the tissue in the trash after you use it.
- Wash your hands often with soap and
water, especially after you cough or
sneeze. Alcohol-based hand cleaners are
also effective.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or
mouth. Germs spread this way.
- Try to avoid close contact with sick
people.
- Stay home if you are sick for 7 days after your symptoms begin or until you
have been symptom-free for 24 hours,
whichever is longer. This is to keep
from infecting others and spreading the
virus further.
Other important actions
that you can take are:
- Follow public health advice regarding
school closures, avoiding crowds and
other social distancing measures.
- Be prepared in case you get sick and
need to stay home for a week or so; a
supply of over-the-counter medicines,
alcohol-based hand rubs, tissues and
other related items might could be useful and help avoid the need to make
trips out in public while you are sick
and contagious.
If you have eaten too many
samosas and are worried about
your health, try Yoga. This is an
ancient Hindu philosophy and
system of exercises originating in
India. Yoga is now recognised all
over the world as an intelligent
form of exercise. Regular practice
can heal minor illnesses, change
your state of mind, help you lose
weight or work your muscles.
More and more different types
of yoga are being developed and
the original poses have been
adapted to suit modern needs.
Yoga has become so fashionable around the world that a lot
of companies are using pictures
of people doing yoga dressed in
white to sell their products!

One of the most famous things

about modern Indian culture is
the Indian film industry, known
as Bollywood. The usual story is
about a boy and a girl who love
each other but their families don’t
approve. There is a lot of dancing and singing in the film as the
boy and girl try to convince their
families to let them marry. The
increasing interest in Bollywood
films inspired Andrew Lloyd
Webber to produce the musical
Bombay Dreams, which had a
very successful two years in London - everyone loved the music
and the costumes! The show is
now being shown on Broadway –
the first Indian-themed musical
to be shown there.

There are plenty of words
used by people all over the world
which have come from Indian
languages. From Hindi we have
shampoo, a word used with various spellings in quite a few languages, including German and
Portuguese. This is a body or hair
wash, but was originally a body
scrub with herbs and warm water.
A guru was originally a Hindu religious teacher, but these days the
word is usually used to describe
anyone who knows a lot about a
certain subject and is considered
an expert. A good example of this
is ‘fashion guru’; a fashion expert
whose ideas are important to designers. From the Tamil language
we have the word rice in English, which comes from the word
‘arisi’, and mango which comes
from the word ‘mangaai’.

Finally, pyjamas, the most
comfortable clothes in the world,
originated in India. Most of us
usually wear them around the
house or while sleeping. But the
original pyjama suit is to be worn
anywhere, and is still worn in India. Pyjamas are only the loose
trousers, and these are worn with
a very long shirt called a kurta.
This is usually white or a pastel
colour. Men usually wear pyjamas and kurtas, but women in
India have shalwar (trousers) and
a kameez, which is like a dress
worn over the shalwar. Both of
these suits are so comfortable
and adaptable that in about 20
years’ time they should be more
popular than jeans!

Trams may rattle once again through Curitiba’s

The Birney was on display in
Tiradentes Square, and used as
a Tourist Information booth,
but was removed after becoming
the target of various attacks by
vandals.
The City Hall project plans to
start the service using two trams,
running at 60 minute intervals.
They will make the 3.4km
journey at speeds of 8 to 10km/h
along freshly-laid tracks.

Tourists approve the idea
A City Hall project forecasts a

Publico and the Municipal
Council Chamber.
The electric trams that
circulated in Curitiba during the
first half of the 20th century may
once again transport passengers
in the city centre. A City hall
project forecasts the installation
of a new tramline between the
Passeio Publico (Curitiba’s first
park and zoo) and Eufrasio
Correia Square (situated in
front of the old railway station),
running along Riachuelo and
Barao do Rio Branco Streets.
The project, which aims to attract
tourists and revive the City’s
cultural memory, was developed
by the Curitiba Research and
Town Planning Institute (Ippuc)
and is part of the works aimed
at the revitalisation of the City’s
central area, begun in 2005.
The return of the trams to the
Centre’s streets will be realised
in partnership with the private
sector. "Following the example
of the restoration of the Old
Town Hall (Paço Municipal),
City Hall will not use municipal
treasury resources, which are
prioritised for investment in
the social area ", stated the aide
for City Hall Special Projects,
Mauricio Sa de Ferrante. "The
proposal has great tourist appeal

and is environmentally correct,
as the trams are electric. At
the moment we are talking
to potential sponsors for the
project."
The service to be provided
by the Tourist Trams will not
compete with the existing mass
transport system. The trams will
allow for boarding and alighting
along the route and will apply
their own fare policy. Ippuc
hopes that the trams will induce
economic growth in the region
surrounding the route.
One of the trams to be restored
is a Birney. Built in the United
States at the beginning of the
20’s, it transported passengers in
In 2007, Ippuc carried out
an opinion poll among tourists
visiting the city. 1,785 people
were interviewed, of whom
95.6% said that they would use
the trams. When asked why they
would board the trams, 77.4% of
those interviewed said that they
would use the tram either for
sightseeing purposes or for sheer
curiosity. Another 14.1% would
choose the Tourist Trams for the
opportunity to relive the past
and revel in nostalgia. The poll
was carried out in nine locations,
including the airport, bus-station,
city parks, and among passengers
using the Tourist Busline.

The Representative is the author of the parliamentary amendment that favoured the production of the promotional video,
and was present at the launch
ceremony. The event brought together authorities; representatives
of entities connected with tourism; and businessmen from the
tourism sector; as well as travel
agents who were visiting the 15th
Parana Tourism Exposition.
The video, produced in three
languages (Portuguese, English
and Spanish), is part of a package of measures that, in turn, is
part of the campaign “Curitiba:
the best city for congresses and
events”. The video divulges the
City’s infrastructure and tourist
attractions, as well as service providers associated with the institution.
According to Sueli Calabrese,
“the city of Curitiba offers an excellent infrastructure for promoters and organisers to hold their
events, and with the involvement
of all the institutions, businessmen and social segments it is possible to further stimulate Business
Tourism in Curitiba”.

The Oscar Niemeyer Museum
debuts in Curitiba the national
tour of the exhibition “A Modern Adventure – The Renault Art
Collection”, included in the official calendar of the commemorations of the France in Brazil Year.
Paintings, sculptures, sketches
and collages are among the 96
works on show. The works are
signed by 18 artists considered
to be representative of the second
half of the 20th century, such
as Miró, Vasarely, Arman, Jean
Dubuffet and Erró. The exhi-
bition was opened to the public
on Saturday, the 16th of May
and may be visited until the 9th
of August. It then moves to Sao
Paulo, where it will be presented
in the Museum of Contemporary
Art (MAC-USP).
The selection is part of the
Renault Collection’s estate, acquired between 1967 and 1985.
The exhibit is divided into four
nuclei: The Industrial Universe,
Dubuffet’s Natural Environment, Abstract Painting and Kinetic Painting. The works were

produced through a pioneering
system of patronage. Aiming
to establish a link between the
industrial universe and art, the
French car manufacturer invited
artists, opened the doors to its
factories and provided materials,
including the parts used daily in
the automotive industry. The result was surprising: an expressive
avant-garde artistic production.
Everything from engines to bolts
was transformed into art.
“They presented a mirror, perhaps critical or sarcastic, but at

stated the art historian and curator of the collection, Ann Hindry, commenting on the historic
meeting of the industrial world
with great names in contemporary art. With over 300 works,
the collection that resulted from
the partnership is made up of
works by artists active in the most
diverse movements in the history
of contemporary art.
As examples of these movements, it is worth mentioning
Jean Dubuffet, who, along with

Jean Fautrier, was one of the
precursors and a protagonist of
Informal Art in France. Robert

We should also mention Julio Le
Parc, an active participant in the
creation of a Visual Arts research
group, and the Icelandic painter
Erró, the main player in Narrative Figuration and considered
one of the protagonists of Pop
Art in Europe.

one of many standards used to
measure the general health level
of adults. Theoretically - being
mindful of the respective load,
speed and decibel limits in your
neighborhood - the more sex
you have and the better it is, the
healthier you are.
It should be understood as a
physiological inevitability: your
genetic purpose is to procreate,
especially when you’re healthy,
and in order to do so, you must
partake in sexual intercourse.
The importance of sexual activity in our lives is unquestionable
(we wouldn’t be here if not for
it), which makes the subject a hit
at the box office this side of the
Milky Way.
I was therefore not surprised
when I recently received an email from a reader with some
questions about this subject. The
most interesting one was the following: does sex help you stay in
shape? In other words, can sexual
activity, as a sport, be useful to
burn calories? After all, nothing’s
better than optimizing one’s time
by combining business with pleasure...

Now that all the pertinent
variables have been put together,
it’s easy to see that sexual athletics shouldn’t even be on the list
of 100 best sports of all time, at
least not when it comes to burning calories or cardiopulmonary
conditioning.
The explanation for the results
of this research is quite simple:
when it comes to sex, it’s not
about controling obesity, burning calories, or building muscle,
but about the utmost celebration
of an affectionate partnership between two human beings. And
that’s what truly matters. The rest
is hogwash.

Eggplant
Ingredients
2 large eggplants unpeeled and
cut into 2cm-thick slices; salt
to taste.
SAUCE:
1 tablespoon olive oil;
1 onion diced;
2 finely chopped garlic cloves;
salt to taste;
1 can peeled Roma tomatoes;
2 anchovy fillets;
1 tablespoon oregano;
1 tablespoon capers;
4 toasted whole-wheat bread
slices, crumbed;
2 tablespoons parmesan cheese,
grated;
1 teacup chicken stock cube.
Preparation time:
40 minutes
Serves:
6 (80g each)
Directions:
Place the eggplant slices in a
greased baking dish and make superficial cuts.
Season with salt. Bake in preheated oven for
10 minutes SAUCE: in a frying
pan, add the olive oil, onion, garlic and salt. Let the eggplant fry
until golden brown. In a blender,
mix together the tomatoes and
anchovy fillets. Add them to the
sauce in the pan, add the oregano
e stir thoroughly. Let the sauce
thicken to a paste. Spread the
capers and 1 tablespoon of the
sauce onto each eggplant slice,
covering the entire surface.
Mix together the bread crumbs
and cheese and sprinkle over the
eggplant. Into the side of the
baking dish, add the gravy made
with the chicken stock to cook
the eggplant. Heat in the oven
again for 15 minutes. Serve hot
or cold as an appetizer.

Zubin Mehta and the best musicians in the world in Teatro
Positivo’s Grand Auditorium
The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra closes its Brazilian tour in Curitiba, on the 17th of August
CURITIBA, 10/07/09 – It is not
for nothing that the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra is considered
one of the best in the world. Even
before it was founded, in 1936,
its heralds spent three years convincing the most qualified musicians from Western Europe and
Germany to emigrate to Israel to
start the group. Since then, the
Israel Philharmonic Orchestra’s
cast has constantly been enriched
with excellent members from various countries. The orchestra has
played in all the important cities in the United States, Western
Europe, Russia, Poland, Japan,
Australia and Latin America. In
August, the orchestra is playing a
South-American tour under the
baton of the renowned maestro
Zubin Mehta. The Brazilian leg
of the tour closes in Curitiba,
on the 17th of August, in Teatro
Positivo’s Grand Auditorium.
Selected works by Richard Strauss
and Beethoven – composers with
whom Mehta and his musicians
have maintained a long and pleasurable intimacy – are those chosen by the Israel Philharmonic
Orchestra to illuminate Curitiba
in the month of August. In all,
the orchestra will play eight concerts in Brazil. The group’s other
host cities will be Sao Paulo (SP),
Rio de Janeiro (RJ), Paulinia (SP)
e Ribeirao Preto (SP). Argentina,
Uruguay and Chile will be the
other countries graced with the
orchestra’s performances. Only
one concert will be given in Curitiba.
For having registered the collaboration of the greatest conductors
and soloists of the past century,
and the diplomatic importance
that this orchestra has exercised
in its worldwide performances,
the executive-director of Teatro
Positivo’s Grand Auditorium,

Marcelo Franco, responsible for
securing the event, feels privileged in receiving this concert:
“hosting one of the world’s five
best orchestras accompanied by
an internationally acclaimed legend of classical music, is a special

Zubin Mehta
Zubin Mehta is a personality
belonging to the elite of today’s
orchestral and operatic conductors. He has been the Artistic Director of the Israel Philharmonic
Orchestra since 1968, becoming Artistic Director for Life in
1981. Nowadays, Mehta is also
the Artistic Director of the Orchestra of the “Maggio Musicale
Fiorentino” Festival, in Italy. He
was also the Artistic Director of
the New York Philharmonic Orchestra, from 1979 to 1991 – the
longest that any conductor has
held the position in the history
of the NYPO.
Maestro Zubin Mehta has conducted various groups on tour
in varied countries and is one of
the conductors most sought after
by the most important orchestras
and operas in the world.
Born in India, he received his
musical education in Vienna and
began his artistic life in London.
A trajectory that quickly led him
to a brilliant international career.
Mehta conducted for the first
time in Israel in 1961, when both
he and the Israel Philharmonic
Orchestra were 25 years old. A
close bond has remained ever
since. During all the crises and
wars in Israel, this brilliant maestro never hesitated in cancelling
his other commitments to be
with the Orchestra, encouraging
with special concerts at the front
lines, on the Lebanese border and
in many national commemorations (such as the concert in Massada, in October 1988, when he
conducted Mahler’s Symphony
No. 2 “Resurrection”).
Zubin Mehta has received innumerable decorations, including,
among others, the prestigious
“Order of the Lotus”, in India.
In Israel, he is a Doctor “Honoris
Causa”, by the University of Tel
Aviv; the Hebrew University of
Jerusalem; and the Weisman Institute.

Inaugurated in 2008, Teatro
Positivo’s Grand Auditorium of
was inspired by the Epidaurus
Theatre, constructed in Greece
in around the 4th century B.C.

Henrique Goldman has managed something akin to what
Carlos Reichenbach did in Falsa
Loura: both faithfulness and veracity in putting together a small
portrait of a group. Reichenbach
accomplished that with the Sao
Paulo proletariat through the
creation of a character that represented the blue collar worker’s
muse; Goldman did it with Brazilian immigrants in London,
through a hillbilly from Minas
Gerais. This man is Jean Charles
de Menezes, the Brazilian citizen murdered in 2005 by British police, who claimed to have
mistaken him for a terrorist.
Such is the character reimagined
by Goldman in Jean Charles.
The director has chosen not to
prioritize the police’s responsibility in the matter, presenting
instead a character that’s joyful,
exciting, funny, crafty, a leader,
and occasionally even a trickster
- in his own words, a “celebration”. And why compare it to Reichenbach’s work? Because of the
veracity in Veri Ferraz’s choice of
wardrobe for the characters, the
documentary-like movements of
Guillermo Escalón’s camera, the
always welcome work of Selton
Mello as Jean and, above all, because of the text created by Goldman and Marcelo Starobinas:
fluid and without academicisms,
it actually sounds natural coming
from those people’s mouths. For
instance, an excited Alex declares,
“This is the original George Foreman!” about the hit grill. In another instance Jean muses, “Brazilians here are like Gremlins: you
water them and about three hundred more pop up.” The small
details, when put together, form
a believable and charming whole.

Sidney Magal’s cameo is like the
icing on the cake, and is as creative as the characters Bruno de
André and Luís Ronaldo in Falsa
Loura. On the other hand, Jean
Charles’s death is a political event
that reflects the United Kingdom’s foreign policy at the time,
which led to the series of attacks
on the London Underground
two weeks before Jean Charles
was murdered. While the script
stands out in its reconstruction of
the execution from witness’ statements, it errs in squeezing the
event and its developments into
just a few minutes’ - a choice,
nevertheless, that Goldman had
every right to make. One thing is
for sure: political decisions led to
the attacks in London, and, consequently, to Jean’s death. One
is left wondering if Jean Charles
could have explored that aspect
further.
