HANDOUTS LESSON TEACHINGFILE 3: JABALI MAKES TOYS THE ADVENTURE PACKAGE THE INVENTORS IN AFRICA Copyright The Inventors Edition 2014 |version 3.0 THE STORY THE INVENTORS IN AFRICA JABALI MAKES TOYS Iris has moved to Africa. There she became friends with Jabali, a very resourceful and handy boy. Jabali teaches Iris how you can make toys. Together they play music on a special xylophone made of glass jars. Together they are playing the music they practiced yesterday in the shed. And they sing along with the music. No words but sounds dancing through the garden. It's like the birds sing with them. Iris grabs the video camera from the table and films Jabali. Then she points the camera at herself. "Hello Netherlands. This is Jabali from Africa, "she cries, as she cheerfully dances. Iris’s brother, Jeroen emerges from behind a bush and she almost stumbles over him. Behind his small bike wobbles a toycar on a rope. "Vroom, vroom!" calls Jeroen who suddenly stops at the table, admiringly looking at the truck Jabali has. "Wow, that's beautiful," he tells Jabali. Jabali smiles and grabs the rope tied to his homemade truck. He gives the rope to Jeroen. "Good," says Jeroen, and runs through the garden with the truck. 'Vroom, vroom. " Jeroen runs in a circle and stops next Jabali. Then he puts the truck beside his own toycar and runs away. Moments later he comes back with the Iris’s bike. 'Game? " Jabali looks questioningly at Iris's bike and then back to Jeroen. "Vroom, vroom!" Explains Jeroen to him. Jeroen ties the rope of Jabali's truck to the seat. Then he jumps on his bike. "Vroom, vroom!" he says again. Jabali crawls carefully on the saddle of the bike. 2 The story "But he cannot ride," calls Iris to Jabali who wants to help. But bravely Jabali puts one foot on the pedal. "Go!" He shouts to Jeroen as he begins to pedal fast. The bike swings back and forth but Jabali keeps himself up by pedaling even harder. The truck hobbles after them. "Crack." A wheel of the truck breaks off. Jabali looks around and almost loses his balance. He pulls the handlebars of his bike but that makes it even worse. The bike shoots to the other side in the direction of a large bush. Jabali puts his hands over his eyes. Iris sees him fall into the bushes it looks funny. Iris remembers them tumblingyesterday along the roadside and starts to giggle. Jabali scrambles to his feet and looks around startled. Beside him is the bicycle, on top of his truck completely crushed. He pulls the truck from under the bike and examines the damage. The rear wheels are broken and the tailgate is torn in two. When he sees that also the front part is completely damaged, his face turns tense. Iris immediately stops laughing. She picks up a wheel and hands it to Jabali. But he pushes her hand away. With the broken truck under his arm, he runs away. Iris looks startled. "Bye" shouts Jeroen. "Shall we race tomorrow?" He shouts after him. Iris looks at her little brother angrily, "No, of course not, he won’t come tomorrow. You and your stupid games. Why do you always ruin everything for me? " She picks up her bike. Only now she discovers that her bike is broken in two. Iris looks shocked at the two halves of her bike. Exactly at the place where the bicycle is supposed to fold, a bolt has broken. Iris burst into tears. With half a bicycle under her arm she trudges to her secret place. 3 The story JABALI MAKES TOYS TASK 1: DRAW JABALI’S TRUCK This is an individual task. Materials needed (per student) Sheets of paper Pencil Crayons and / or markers Instructions What do you think Jabali’s truck looks like? Make a drawing and explain to your group what materials and equipment you would use to make it. The wheels for example, would you use the lids of jars or are there other round things you can find? Look at everyone’s drawings. Which do you like? And why? 4 The Inventors in Africa: JABALI MAKES TOYS TASK 2: MAKING A TOY YOURSELF - HOW TO MAKE A LIZARD This is an assignment for groups of 4 Jabali makes his own toys. Do you also want to make toys? Africa is home to many animals. Jabali likes to copy them! Create your own lizard. Materials needed to make a template for the lizard (each group creates one template): A template is a tool that helps you make the exact same thing every time you use it. So you only have to make one template per group. Plank (approximately 30 x 20 centimeters) Nails Hammer Template of a lizard (Print per group the paper template of the lizard full size. cf. Annex: Template lizard) For each lizard you will need (each group makes 2 lizards): 1 piece of wire of 125 centimeters (pre-cutting to size) Packingmaterial (about 25 x 8 x 0.5 centimeters) examples: foam, plastics, bubble wrap Wool or cotton yarn (knitting or crocheting yarn) Cutting / bending pliers Scissors Blunt needle Instructions 1. Put the lizard template on the board and hammer the nails on the indicated crosses. 5 The Inventors in Africa: JABALI MAKES TOYS 2. Bend a piece of wire of 125 centimeters around the nails and follow the lines on the template. Decide in advance how you do this. Make sure you start and end at the tail. 3. Twist the two ends at the tail together so that a tail is created. 4. Bend the tips of the tail with pliers so that it will not be sharp. 5. Now remove the loose ends of the legs off the nails. Grasp the ends of the legs with a pair of pliers and twist them around a few times. NOTE: Do not yet remove the body of the lizard from the mold. 6. Now we take the lizard off the mold. Bend the wire even more beautiful in the right form. Make sure that the lizard can lie completely flat on the table. 7. We are going to fill the body. Put your lizard wire on the packing material and mark with a pencil the shape of the body on the packing material. 8. Cut the packing material. 6 The Inventors in Africa: JABALI MAKES TOYS 9. Lay the cut packingmaterial in the form of wire and sew with needle and thread together. Tie the ends of the thread to the wire. 10.Your lizard is almost ready. Bend the legs down so he stands on his feet. 11.Now you have a beautiful lizard, decorate with paint or other materials. Make it your own African animal. Did it work? 1. You have made with your group one or two lizards . Now you can easily make a few extra lizards that look exactly the same. That's because you yourself have created the tools. What do you call this tool? This tool is called a mold 7 The Inventors in Africa: JABALI MAKES TOYS COLOPHON Colophon Issue 2014 Foundation Inventors | www.theinventors.eu Concept and realization Atelier Vrijdag This publication may not be copied or reproduced without written permission from The Inventors Lifelong Learning Programme This project has been funded with support from the European Commission.
