M SOCIAL STUDIES T The Marco Island Foundation of the Arts hosted its annual meeting, held at the Marco Island Yacht Club May 1. MIFA President Sandi Johnson called the meeting to order, and following approval of new board members Mary Ann Carroll, Tish Champagne, Lynne Minozzi and Marilyn Wirth, lunch was served. MARCO | 45 M SOCIAL STUDIES T The 11th Annual Soapfest, held May 2 and 3, gave fans of daytime dramas a chance to rub elbows with the stars they watch faithfully on TV. Walt Willey of “All My Children” acted as master of ceremonies, and all proceeds from the event went to children’s charities. A total of 17 stars from “As the World Turns,” “Guiding Light,” and “One Life to Live” joined the festivities. There was a dinner, pub outing and a cruise on the Marco Island Princess. M ARCO | 46 Photos by Lance Shearer M SOCIAL STUDIES Ryan Toth. The City of Marco Island held its annual Spring Jubilee April 11 at Mackle Park. An estimated 1,500 kids, parents and grandparents attended the event in celebration of Easter. In its 11th year, Spring Jubilee is a kid-friendly event; affording Islanders with an opportunity for an Easter egg hunt that is fun for all ages. Other activities include a bounce house, face painting and a place to make slime. Kids in the 5-7 age bracket swarm onto the field as the Easter egg hunt gets underway. Photos by Lance Shearer MARCO | 47 M SOCIAL STUDIES T The Marco Island Branch Library hosted a ground breaking ceremony April 30, to celebrate the construction of Rose Hall. The new edition will add an additional 4,000 square feet of meeting space and will accommodate 150 people. The expansion was made possible, in part, by a generous donation from Bill Rose, of Rose Marina on Marco Island. Guy Harvey’s was the place to be May 2 for Talk Derby To Me — one of the Upon a Star Foundation’s most popular fundraisers. Guests were treated to a sumptuous buffet, beverage specialties in tradition of the Kentucky Derby and lots of all around fun. Colorful hats and creative “Derby Day” attire commanded the scene. MARCO | 49 M SOCIAL STUDIES T The first-ever Marco Music Festival rocked the Island April 19, with headliners, Classic Rock All Stars, delivering the hits they made famous, including “Ride, Captain, Ride,” “Green-Eyed Lady,” and “Get Ready.” Four Southwest Florida bands played leading up to the main event: Lost Cause, the Lords of Cool Jukebox, and Triple Shot. MARCO | 50 M SOCIAL STUDIES Thousands thronged the first-ever Marco Island Seafood Festival, March 28-29, at Veterans Park. Vendors include Hammerhead Seafood, Gene’s Gator Nuggets, Florida Cracker Seafood and local favorites Nacho Mamas and Paradise Seafood, as well as Cameron’s Fish & Chips. They offered delicacies for as little as $2, but no more than $5. The Sunrise Rotary Club teamed with the Marco Island Rotary Club and the Kiwanis Club of Marco Island to run the festival, with all profits going to the charitable works of the clubs. Race Russo. MARCO | 51 M SOCIAL STUDIES A A large swath of the Island showed up at the Esplanade April 26 for the 19th annual Taste of Marco. They brought their appetites with them, and a who’s who of Island eateries provided grazingsized portions of some of their specialties to satisfy those appetites. Diversions for the younger set included a bounce house, inflatable slide, candle and sand art and a climbing wall. All proceeds went to the Greater Marco Family YMCA. Lauren Feinman. Troy Lipschutz. Fifteen models representing all ages and body types modeled the clothes, representing the latest trends in fashion. The event is just an example of shows conducted at various locations on the Island.
