THE COACHES }Mike Szkodzinski (St. Norbert 2000) is in his 10th season at Lawrence and has a record of 103-145-20 (.422). }Mark Ostapina (Wisconsin 1979) is in his 15th season at MSOE and has a record of 224-167-15 (.570). He is in his 30th season overall and has a record of 287-252-23 (.531). THE SERIES }In a series that dates back to the 1992-93, MSOE holds a 49-20-2 advantage. The Vikings won the season series finale last season to snap MSOE’s 12-game win streak in the series. LAST SERIES Top-ranked Adrian swept a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association series from the visiting Vikings last weekend. Adrian pulled away early and rolled to an 8-2 win the series opener last Friday. The Bulldogs scored four times in the first period and got two goals apiece from Trevor Boyd and Connor Armour in the game. Lawrence got goals from a pair of freshmen, Josh Koepplinger and Nick Felan. Adrian scored two goals in a span of 26 seconds in the first period to grab the lead. Armour got the Bulldogs on the board at the 11:28 mark, and Adrian went on the power play immediately with Boyd scoring on the man-advantage at 11:54 for a 2-0 edge. Lawrence cut the lead in half on Felan’s goal at 13:27 with Brendan Vetter and Lane King picking up assists. The Bulldogs stretched the lead to 4-1 as Cory Dunn and Taylor McCloy both scored in the final 5:35 of the period. Koepplinger gave the Vikings some hope when he scored off assists from Vetter and King just 1:11 into the second period to trim the margin to 4-2. Adrian struck back quickly with two goals in a span of 1:34. Boyd scored at 5:16 and Brent Sauve scored at 6:50 to push the lead to 6-2. Adrian added goals by Mat Thompson and Armour in the third period. Tyler Parks made 31 saves to pick up the win for Adrian. Mattias Soderqvist started and made 16 saves for the Vikings before being removed in the second period. Greg Procopio stopped 18 shots in relief for the Vikings. Adrian skated to a 5-1 win on Saturday to complete the series sweep. Jeremy Olinyk scored twice for the Bulldogs, who picked up three goals on special teams. Adrian went 2-for-8 on the power play and added a shorthanded goal. Dillon Kelley made 21 saves to pick up the win for Adrian. Procopio stopped 30 shots for the Vikings. Adrian scored a pair of first-period power-play goals, including one with just three seconds left, for a 2-0 edge after one. Olinyk made it 3-0 on a goal just 3:16 into the second period, and he picked up a short-handed goal at the 10:41 mark of the second for a 4-0 lead. The Bulldogs led 5-0 when Lawrence’s Ryan Robertson scored his first career goal at the 12:57 mark of the third. The junior defenseman scored off assists from Jake Roeper and Koepplinger. VIKINGS UPDATE }Lawrence is in a brutal stretch of games to finish the season. Including the games at Adrian, Lawrence will play just two of its final eight games at the Appleton Family Ice Center. }The Vikings slipped back to fifth place in the NCHA North Division. Northland swept Finlandia last weekend and moved up to fourth place with 12 points. The Vikings are now fifth with 11 points and both teams are chasing MSOE (14 points) for the final playoff berth. St. Norbert and St. Scholastica comfortably lead the division with 24 and 22 points, respectively. While Lawrence and MSOE face off this weekend, Northland hosts No. 2-ranked St. Norbert. }Senior forward Matt Moore (Grosse Pointe Park, Mich.) played in his 100th game for the Vikings this past Saturday. Rumble went out of the game vs. St. Scholastica on Jan. 22 after taking a shot off his helmet. Vetter has been battling injury all season but played in both games last weekend at Adrian. }Junior Ryan Robertson (Alpharetta, Ga.) picked up his first career goal vs. Adrian last Saturday. open a close game and defeated Lawrence University 5-1 at the Appleton Family Ice Center. The Blugolds led 2-1 after the second period in the season opener for both teams, but Eau Claire scored twice in the first 9:20 of the final period to break it open. Preston Hodge’s goal to make it 3-1 came on a strange play. Lawrence was on the power play when the Vikings were called for a delayed penalty. Eau Claire goaltender Tyler Green was pulled and Hodge scored at the 5:16 mark on a short-handed goal. Eau Claire’s Garrett Clemment then scored on the power play at 9:20 to make it 4-1. The game got a little chippy in the final minutes, and Eau Claire finished with 11 penalties for 33 minutes. The Vikings had 10 penalties for 20 minutes. The Blugolds added an emptynetter with 53 seconds left to complete the scoring. After a scoreless opening period, Eau Claire scored twice in a span of 2:08 in the middle of the second. Ethan Nauman and Preston Hodge scored to stake the Blugolds to a 2-0 advantage. October 31 No. 2 UW-Stevens Point 9, Lawrence 1 APPLETON, Wis. — The UW-Stevens Point hockey team converted 4-of-6 chances on the power play Saturday night and went on to a 9-1 non-conference victory over Lawrence University at the Appleton Family Ice Center. The second-ranked Pointers (2-00) scored a pair of power-play goals in each of the first two periods to take control. Joe Kalisz and Kyle Sharkey each had a pair of goals for Stevens Point, and both of Sharkey’s goals came on the power play in the second period. Lawrence (0-2-0) got its goal in the first period when Josh Koepplinger scored off an assist from Brad Mueller. It was the first collegiate goal for Koepplinger. The Pointers led 4-1 after the opening period, and that would be the end of the night for Lawrence goaltender Mattias Soderqvist. He made 10 saves in the opening period. Freshman James Schroeder played the final two periods and finished with 15 saves. Stevens Point scored three more times in the second, twice on the power play, and then added a pair of goals in the third. Jesse Gordichuk stopped 28 shots for the Pointers. November 6 Lawrence 3, Marian 2 APPLETON, Wis. — Matt Moore’s goal early in the third period was the difference as Lawrence University downed Marian University 3-2 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Appleton Family Ice Center. The game was part of the annual Battle of Highway 41 series, which shifts to the Blue Line Ice Center in Fond du Lac on Saturday. The Vikings (1-2-0, 1-0-0 NCHA) need a win or a tie in the series finale to take back the traveling trophy. The game was tied at 2-2 to start the third period, and the Vikings cashed in on an early scoring chance. Steve Hughes took a pass from Ryan Rumble, and Hughes’ shot was deflected to Moore, who was waiting on the back door. Moore stuffed the shot in the back of the net and the Vikings led 3-2 at the 5:13 mark. The teams traded scoring chances throughout the third, and Marian pulled goaltender Mike Gudmandson with 1:28 remaining. The Vikings withstood a final flurry to seal the win. Bryce Mitzel scored 1:08 into overtime to deliver the victory for Finlandia (1-3-3, 1-2-2 NCHA). Lawrence (1-4-0, 1-2-0) trailed 2-0 heading into the third but tied it midway through the period. Freshman Nick Felan scored his first collegiate goal at the 6:32 mark to cut the lead to 2-1. Austin Frank then scored off a feed from Matt Moore at the 10:44 mark to tie the game at 2-2. Ryan Rumble and Sean Reynolds scored two goals apiece, and Renato Engler had a goal and three assists for the Vikings (2-4-0, 2-2-0 NCHA). Sophomore Lane King, who transferred to Lawrence from Finlandia earlier this year, picked up three assists against his former mates. Mattias Soderqvist made 25 saves to earn the victory for Lawrence. The Vikings broke on top less than five minutes into the game. The game was part of the Thanksgiving Showdown at the Blue Line Ice Center. Brandon Wahlin scored just 3:50 into the game and the Blugolds (61-2) were on their way. Wahlin also added a goal in the third period. Ethan Nauman scored midway through the first period, and the Blugolds led 2-0 after the first. Garret Clemment then scored at the 12:08 mark of the second for a 3-0 after two. Eau Claire then scored four times in the third to break the game wide open. November 28 Lawrence 4, St. Olaf 3 FOND DU LAC, Wis. — Austin Frank scored twice in the final 6:20 to lift the Lawrence University hockey team to a 4-3 non-conference victory over St. Olaf College. The game was part of the Thanksgiving Showdown at the Blue Line Ice Center. It also was victory No. 100 for Lawrence coach Mike Szkodzinski. Lawrence (3-5-0) trailed 3-2 after Peter Lindblad’s power-play goal just 2:27 into the third period. All three of St. Olaf’s goals came on the manadvantage. Lawrence struck back on the power play after Judd Loewenstein was sent off for cross-checking at 13:08. 2015-16 GAME RECAPS Frank, off assists from Brandon Boelter and Nick Felan, scored at the 13:40 mark to tie the game at 3-3. The Vikings then killed off a penalty before getting the game-winner. Frank scored with just 1:15 left off assists from Brad Mueller and Sean Reynolds to give Lawrence the lead. After Lawrence cut the St. Norbert lead to 2-1 early in the second period, the Green Knights responded with three second-period goals. St. Norbert then scored four more times in the third to turn the game into a runaway. St. Norbert (10-1-1, 7-1-0 NCHA) led 2-0 after the opening period on goals from Michael Hill and Jake Larson. Lawrence’s Renato Engler sliced the lead in half when he scored a power-play goal off assists from Nick Felan and Josh Koepplinger 4:41 into the second. Short-handed goals from Max Pernhem in the second period and Mack Ohnsted in the third broke a 3-3 tie. Lawrence’s Brandon Boelter scored the second of his two goals to tie it at 3-3 with 4:01 left in the second period. Ryan Rumble and Lane King picked up assists for the Vikings. The Auggies then got a shorthanded goal from Pernhem with 2:58 left in the period to take a 4-3 lead after two periods. Ohnsted then picked up another short-hander with 7:06 left in the third to put Augsburg up 5-3. Ohnsted then added a powerplay goal on a two-man advantage with 1:38 left to seal the victory. January 8 Lawrence 2, Concordia (Wis.) 0 APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University goaltender Mattias Soderqvist earned his first career shutout as the Vikings topped Concordia (Wis.) University 2-0 in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game at the Appleton Family Ice Center. Soderqvist, a junior from Stockholm, Sweden, stopped 26 shots to post the first shutout for the Vikings (4-8-0, 3-4-0 NCHA) since a 3-0 win over Northland College on Feb. 22, 2013. In a game filled with spectacular goaltending from both teams, Jack Romanuik made 21 saves for the Falcons (8-4-1, 5-3-1). Lawrence finished with 23 shots on goal. Lawrence grabbed the lead on its first shot on goal for the game. Mikkel Joehnk took a pass from Brad Mueller and his shot from above the right face-off circle went over Romanuik’s shoulder for a 1-0 lead at 4:20 of the first period. January 9 Lawrence 2, Concordia (Wis.) 2 (OT) MEQUON, Wis. — Lawrence University skated to a 2-2 overtime tie in a Northern Collegiate Hockey Association game with Concordia (Wis.) University at the Ozaukee Ice Center. Both teams scored once apiece in the first and third periods, and both teams had good scoring chances in the overtime. Lawrence goaltender Mattias Soderqvist made three outstanding saves in the overtime and finished with 40 saves for the game. Andy Munroe stopped 39 shots for Concordia (8-4-2, 5-3-2 NCHA). Lawrence (4-8-1, 3-4-1) got on the board first when Luke McDiarmid scored just 1:20 into the first period. McDiarmid took a pass from Austin Frank and tallied his first goal of the season. The Falcons bounced back and tied it exactly five minutes later on Nick Erb’s goal. The score stayed that way until early in the third period when Steve Hughes put the Vikings ahead 2-1 at the 5:17 mark. Hughes picked up his third goal of the season off assists from Ryan Rumble and Matt Montemurro. Concordia finally tied the score at 2-2 with just 4:03 left in the third on Adam Fauchoux’s goal. The Falcons fired six shots in the overtime, and Lawrence had four. Concordia finished with 42 shots for the game, and Lawrence had 41. January 15 Lawrence 7, Aurora 0 APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University put together a dominating performance en route to a 7-0 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Aurora University at the Appleton Family Ice Center. Playing in front of a near-capacity crowd for the Body Check Cancer Game, the Vikings (5-8-1, 4-4-1 NCHA) got two goals apiece from Renato Engler, Josh Koepplinger and Felix Henriksson. Mattias Soderqvist stopped 27 shots to earn his second shutout in the last three games. The Vikings went 3-for-5 on the power play and fired 55 shots on goal. Henriksson scored his first career goal midway through the first period off an assist from Ryan Eardley and the Vikings led 1-0 at the 10:34 mark. Renato Engler made it 2-0 with just 58 seconds left in the first when he passed the puck to himself off the boards and beat Aurora goaltender Jared Rutledge. Koepplinger made it 3-0 just 2:40 into the second period with assists from Sean Reynolds and Ryan Robertson. The score stayed that way until the Vikings scored three consecutive power-play goals in the third. Koepplinger scored on the man-advantage at 7:46 of the third with assists coming again from Robertson and Reynolds. Engler then scored on the power play just 1:13 later with Nick Felan and Brandon Boelter picking up assists. January 16 Lawrence 6, Aurora 4 APPLETON, Wis. — Lawrence University scored three unanswered goals in the third period to rally for a 6-4 Northern Collegiate Hockey Association victory over Aurora University at the Appleton Family Ice Center. Nick Felan had a goal and three assists for Lawrence (6-8-1, 5-4-1 NCHA), and Renato Engler picked up a goal and two assists. Mattias Soderqvist pushed his unbeaten streak to four games for the Vikings and made 31 saves. Trevor Hoth had a goal and two assists for Aurora (1-13-1, 1-8-1), and Jared Rutledge made 39 saves for the Spartans. Tim Santopoalo scored just 1:06 into the third period to give Aurora a 4-3 lead, but the Vikings rallied quickly. Jake Kreutzer, in just his second game back from injury for the Vikings, took the puck to the right of Rutledge and went top shelf. The puck snuck inside the upper corner for a goal to tie the game at 4-4 at the 4:43 mark. Less than a minute later, Felix Henriksson fired a puck through a screen of multiple defenders and past Rutledge to give the Vikings a 5-4 lead at the 5:30 mark. That would prove to be the game-winner, the second game-winning goal for Henriksson in as many nights. The Vikings then stretched the lead on the power play midway through the period. Engler beat Rutledge with assists from Felan and Steve Hughes, who finished with three helpers in the game, at the 11:08 mark. The Spartans pulled Rutledge for the final 1:40 but couldn’t score. The Saints (10-4-2, 8-3-0 NCHA) scored just 2:40 into the first period, scored a pair of goals in the first minutes of the second period and scored just 1:18 into the third. Dylan Nowakowski scored twice for St. Scholastica, and Matt Moore scored both goals for Lawrence (6-91, 5-5-1). Tyler Bruggeman stopped 28 shots for the Saints, including a barrage on a pair of Lawrence power plays. Mattias Soderqvist made 37 saves for the Vikings. Kris McKinzie scored off a rebound less than three minutes into the game to give St. Scholastica a 1-0 lead. The score stayed that way until early in the second period. Michael Spring scored 1:30 into the second period, and Josh Hansen scored 29 seconds later to give St. Scholastica a 3-0 advantage. St. Scholastica (11-4-2, 9-3-0 NCHA) led 2-0 early in the third period, but the Vikings cut that lead in half with just 1:47 left. The Vikings (6-10-1, 5-6-1) were on the power play and pulled goaltender Mattias Soderqvist for an extra attacker with 3:09 remaining. The power play expired with just over two minutes left but Lawrence scored 14 seconds later on Lane King’s third goal of the season. Brandon Boelter and Renato Engler picked up assists for the Vikings. Lawrence pulled Soderqvist again with just over a minute remaining in an effort to tie the game. St. Scholastica defenseman Connor Faupel picked 2015-16 GAME RECAPS off a Lawrence pass and fired it into the empty net to seal the win with 26 seconds left. Soderqvist finished with 31 saves for the Vikings, and St. Scholastica goaltender Tyler Bruggeman made 28 saves to pick up the win. The Bulldogs (16-2-1, 12-2-1 NCHA) scored four times in the first period and got two goals apiece from Trevor Boyd and Connor Armour in the game. Lawrence (6-11-1, 5-7-1) got goals from a pair of freshmen, Josh Koepplinger and Nick Felan. Adrian scored two goals in a span of 26 seconds in the first period to grab the lead. Armour got the Bulldogs on the board at the 11:28 mark, and Adrian went on the power play immediately with Boyd scoring on the man-advantage at 11:54 for a 2-0 edge. Lawrence cut the lead in half on Felan’s goal at 13:27 with Brendan Vetter and Lane King picking up assists. Dillon Kelley made 21 saves to pick up the win for Adrian. Freshman netminder Greg Procopio stopped 30 shots for the Vikings (6-12-1, 5-8-1). Adrian scored a pair of first-period power-play goals, including one with just three seconds left, for a 2-0 edge after one. Olinyk made it 3-0 on a goal just 3:16 into the second period, and he picked up a short-handed goal at the 10:41 mark of the second for a 4-0 lead.
