KOI KICHI
APRIL 2011
NEWSLETTER OF THE
SOUTHERN COLORADO KOI CLUB
COLORADO SPRINGS, CO
NEXT MEETING!
Instead of meeting at the library on Wednesday, we are having a PICK UP PARTY !!
THIS IS FOR EVERYONE, whether you bought fish or not.
Just come and socialize and marvel at how the weeds have grown around Sarah’s
covered pond, which will be uncovered but not necessarily weed free by then.
SATURDAY, MAY 5 AT 1 PM - THE KOI NURSERY AT SARAH’S HOUSE 3165 Sapporo Place, CS, 80918
Come through the gate to the left of the house.
Call me if you don’t find it on your map program - There is a court and a drive, too it’s a cul de sac off Sapporo Drive, near Flintridge & Dublin (599-8349)
The babies are ready to go home - they are now in about 62º water, have been treated with
heat, salt, prazzi and proform C. Ray Armstrong picked his up today and scraped and scoped
them and said they are squeaky clean, so you can add them directly to your pond if it’s warm.
We are going to do this pot luck style - Barb Dawson is in charge so give her a call at 330-7041
if you have questions. We are keeping it simple - here’s what to bring:
Last name beginning A through R: Salad - Last name beginning S through Z: Dessert
... or just bring munchies! The club will provide all the plates, etc., ice - water, soda and tea.
If you would like an adult beverage, please bring your own. Bring the kids along if you would like!
We will have bags and oxygen for the koi, and the pictures to id which is yours.
It would be helpful if you can bring a cooler or box to put them in for transport home.
If you CAN’T MAKE IT - or you need to delay picking up your koi for some reason - don’t worry we won’t throw them out. They are fine where they are until you can come and get them.
Please let Barb know if you are planning to come and how many people will be with you - so we
can have enough chairs and plates and cups. Call her at 330-7041 by Wednesday, May 2.
EXTRAS !!! If all goes well, we will have 2 shiro and 2 showa for sale - $100 each - names will
be put in t wo hats - You don’t have to be present to win - email me to put your name in the hat.
You just have to pay for it before you take it home!
HAPPENING RAIN OR SHINE !
Looking for ward to seeing everyone there!

KOI FOOD UPDATE
The missing food should arrive and be at my house on Wednesday, April 25 - you can wait and pick
up all of yours after that, get it at the party, or whatever works for you. Just give me a call anytime
12-9 pm to make sure I am home or can leave it out for you. 599-8349
CLAY AND SODIUM THIOSULFATE (dechlor, cheap!) are also at my house - $12 for 6 lb
of clay, $4 for the ST. Clay is going fast so call me to reserve your bag if you haven’t already.
YELLOW SUBMARINES !
Remember the Yamabuki Ogons from last year?
Several members have asked for updates on these beautiful koi - we decided that the best thing to do would be
to have their owners submit pictures, if possible in a bowl with a measuring tape to see how big they have
gotten. Send the pictures to me at [email protected]. Be sure to tell us whether they were the domestic or
the Japanese import ogons. We will put them all together and ask our judges Jan and Bob to take a look. Once
we see how many pictures we get, we will make further plans!
ANNUAL KOI REHOMING AUCTION
!!!
Saturday, June 9, 2012
Phelan Gardens - 4955 Austin Bluffs Parkway
Colorado Springs CO 80918
This year will be our fourth auction. The purpose of the auction is to provide members
of our club, members of the Pikes Peak Water Garden Society, and members of the
Rocky Mountain Koi Club an opportunity to find new homes for koi and goldfish in their
ponds. Many people want to rehome these fish because they have too many fish in
the pond, because the fish have not turned out the way they hoped, or because they
just want to make room for different koi.
The auction is open to the public, and there has been no lack of interest in the past.
You can either donate the koi to the club, or split the selling price 50/50% with the club.
We will also accept goldfish as donations, and will sell them at the auction.
The big change this year is that we can now keep them for a short time before the
auction, as we have the tanks in Sarah’s garage up and running. Many people have
wanted to bring fish, but are unable to catch them or have no place to keep them once
they are caught, especially since they can’t be brought to auction until the morning of
the actual event. We will even help you catch and transport them if given enough
notice. So start planning now - give us a head’s up if you need help or need a
temporary place to put them before the auction. Tanks are limited, so you need to
reserve one as soon as possible. email us at [email protected]
Only a few rules - 6” minimum - koi keepers only, no dealers - fish must be healthy.
This is the club’s biggest and most important fund raising event - please help support
the club and future events!
