Denfeld to host centennial
event and honor inductees
Denfeld will host centennial events
th
marking the 100 anniversary of its first
graduating class and induct ten new
members into the Hunter Hall of Fame
on Saturday, August 1, 2009, at 2 p.m.
in the historic Denfeld Auditorium.
Denfeld’s predecessor, Duluth Industrial
High School, held its first classes in the
fall of 1905 and graduated its first class
in the spring of 1909.
Hunter Hall of Fame Induction
The Hunter Hall of Fame was
established in 1996 to honor positive
contributions to Denfeld, its traditions
and its community. The 20 members of
the Denfeld Athletic Hall of Fame,
established in 1966, are the original
Hunter Hall of Fame members.
Denfeld’s Distributive Education Clubs
of America chapter launched the Hunter
Hall of Fame and established its criteria.
Nine new members were added at an
induction ceremony on Feb. 16, 1996.
The Denfeld Alumni Association took
over management in 2004. Since then
the association has been working
diligently with several key individuals
and groups to make this summer’s
event possible. On Saturday, Aug. 1, at
2 p.m., ten additional members will be
honored and presented with plaques for
enriching Denfeld’s unique history. The
original 29 members will also be
recognized. Admission to the event is
free and is open to the community.
DHS All-Class Dance
The Denfeld Alumni Association will
also be hosting an All-Class Dance on
the Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009 from 7 to
10:30 p.m. in the Denfeld Gymnasium.
The evening will feature music
covering several generations, with
ample seating for breaks from the
dancing action. Denfeld Alumni
merchandise as well as refreshments
will be available for purchase.
Admission to the dance will be
accepted in the form of a donation to
help cover costs. A donation box will
be located at the door.
An honored actress
Joyce Hadley (Olson), class of 1939,
will accept Hall of Fame recognition
on behalf of her sister, the late
Dorothy Arnold (Olson). Dorothy, a
1935 Denfeld graduate, appeared in
15 feature films between 1937 and
1939 and quickly became a Hollywood
star.
Joyce was thrilled to have an
opportunity to return to Denfeld for
such a wonderful occasion. She was
excited to know that after all these
years the work of her famed sister
continues to draw a crowd.
Dorothy Arnold (Olson) is one of ten
honorees being inducted into the
Denfeld Hall of Fame on Saturday,
Aug. 1, 2009 at 2 p.m. in the Denfeld
Auditorium.

Class Reunions
1961
The class of 1961 will hold its 48-year
reunion on Friday, July 31, at the AllAmerican Club, 1931 W. Michigan St.,
Duluth.
1960
Retired Denfeld social studies
teacher Marv Heikkinen is part of a
group of Duluthians traveling to Iraq
in May to promote world citizenship.
Denfeld lost two Hunter Hall of
Fame members recently, both on
holidays. Michael "Mickey"
McClelland (class of 1956) died on
Easter Sunday at St. Mary's
Hospital in Rochester, Minn. Wally
Smith (class of 1942) died on
Christmas Day in Diamondhead,
Miss. McClelland excelled in track
and field at Denfeld, winning the
high hurdles at the Minnesota state
track meet in 1956. Smith was an
All-American football star at
Denfeld, and a decorated hero of
World War II.
The Denfeld Alumni Association has
added the following new board
members: Adrienne Thureen
(Bergquist, class of 1957), Linda
Paulick (Seger, class of 1963), Tim
LeGarde (class of 1988), Mandy
LeGarde (Roman, class of 1988)
and Andy Ensign (class of 1991).
Ensign recently finished his third
season as Assistant Women’s
Hockey Coach at the College of St.
Scholastica. The team finished as
runners-up in the ACHA Division II
National Tournament.
Chris Stafne (class of 2008) has
committed to attend school and play
hockey for the UMD Bulldogs in the
fall of 2009.
Another notable loss to the Denfeld
community is the passing of Anna
Amundson (class of 1928) on April
29. Prior to her death, she was
purportedly the second-oldest living
graduate of Denfeld.
Jeremy Polson (class of 1996) won
th
the 20 annual Fitger’s 5K on April
19 in Duluth. His winning time was
15 minutes and 29 seconds. Polson
currently runs with St. Paul-based
Team Run N Fun.
Katherine Hooey (class of 1960)
lived modestly, but through shrewd
investments she amassed a sizable
estate, which she left to two animal
shelters and the Lake Superior Zoo.
She died in 2006.

from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at American

Tweed Museum of Art. A retired
Duluth teacher, Gilmore established
a charitable foundation bearing her
