As a Club we endeavour to assist judges to progress with their experience of judging Basenjis. We have
liaised with the Kennel Club and have obtained permission to hold 'Special Awards' at our Championship
Shows where hopefully there is already a sizeable captive audience who will enter their dogs and make
a reasonable number for the invited judge to go over.
The Special Awards are judged as an entirely separate entity from the Championship Show. Therefore
IF YOUR DOG IS BEATEN IN ANY OF THE SPECIAL AWARDS, IT IS NOT CLASSED AS A BEATEN
DOG FOR THE PURPOSES OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW AND IT IS NOT DISQUALIFIED FROM
CHALLENGING IN THE MAIN SHOW.
The formal KC regulation reads as follows: 'A dog beaten in competition for a Special Award confined to
one breed is not considered to be a beaten dog for the purposes of Regulations F(1)26 and 27.'.
N.B. Only those dogs which have been entered into the main show are eligible for entry into the Special
Award classes.
The Special Awards are arranged entirely as a method of helping B and C list judges, so please do
support and enter if you can - THANK YOU!

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR JUDGES
Championship Show — Dr Janusz Opara [Poland]
I was born into a doggy family, my mother bred Pekingese and they were my first dogs and
constant companions during my childhood. I did focus on this fabulous breed as a matter of
course and bred the Pekingese exclusively under my own kennel name LIWANG for over 20
years.
My long pampered dream of importing and breeding Basenjis came true in 1991 in the form of a
Horsleys bred female. She was the very first Basenji imported to Poland, she was mother to the
very first litter born in Poland, one of her daughters from her first litter became the country’s first
bred Basenji going BIS at an all breed Championship show in my country.
My foundation stock was my 3 imports from the UK and 2 imports from Australia.
I have bred 18 litters over last 24 years; some of the Basenjis I bred had truly spectacular show
careers, some were just successful show dogs but my real pride and joy is that they all were all
of good type and had reliable temperaments. My first concern has always been the well-being
of my dogs and no show success can compare to the pride and joy of seeing all my puppies
growing up and growing old with their loving and caring families.
I got my first license to judge the Pekingese and some other Toy breeds, then I progressed for
Hounds and finally, after 25 years, I completed my all-breed status in 2005.
I have enjoyed many nice and prestigious judging assignments that I have had the pleasure
to fulfil but judging Basenjis, especially at the Club Shows has always been a real treat to
me. The BOBA Championship Show of 2000, plus specialties in Finland, Sweden and Australia
(Basenji Club of New South Wales) are truly unforgettable as both a great honour and an utmost
pleasure.
Special Awards — Mr Roy Baker (Sylbecq)
My interest in Basenjis goes back to the early 80’s when my partner and I were looking for a
small hound breed to exhibit. At the time we had had fair success showing our Smooth Collies,
making up several Champions. We contacted Mrs Horner and asked if she would advise us
if a tricolour Bokoto bitch became available. Sadly, despite continued efforts, we were not
successful in obtaining one.
I remained fascinated by the breed however, and was lucky in 2002 to attend and pass the
Basenji Seminar and Assessment run by the Basenji Breed Council and organised by Paul
Singleton. My mentor there was Simon Parsons. It was a memorable experience and remains to
this day quite the best organised and most informative seminar I have attended in any breed.
In 2008 I judged the BOBA Open Show and in 2009 judged the breed without CCs at Leeds
where my BOB was the very young Tokaji American Gigolo at Embeau, to whom I subsequently
had the pleasure of awarding Best Overall in the Champion Stakes at Birmingham National in
2011.
More generally, I award CCs in 10 breeds across the Working, Pastoral and Utility Groups
and am approved to judge the Pastoral Group at Championship Show level. Exhibits bred and
owned by the Sylbecq partnership have won over a hundred CCs, and we had the pleasure of
campaigning Ch Keyna’s Swansong to the Schipperke breed record of 38 CCs.
I look forward very much to the Basenji Club of GB Championship Show and judging the Special
Awards for you.

the correct colour, sex, weight or height and in the event of there being no Puppy, Junior or Yearling Class to
the Open Class for the correct colour, sex, weight or height.
c) For any reason other than the above, the Show Secretary shall transfer it to the Open Class for the correct

which has competed and is unbeaten by any other puppy exhibited at the same Show. A puppy is a dog of six and
not exceeding twelve calendar months of age on the first day of the Show. Where the Best in Show is a puppy
it should automatically be awarded Best Puppy in Show respectively. Similarly, if the Reserve Best in Show is a
puppy which has only been beaten by an adult dog it will also automatically be Best Puppy in Show respectively.
Consequently, selection of Best Puppy in Show must follow the selection of Best in Show respectively.
Best Puppy in Show must be selected from puppies which have been judged and which are unbeaten by any
other puppy.
Withdrawal from Other Competition: Puppies which become eligible for Best Puppy in Show may be withdrawn from
all other competition, other than Breed Classes prior to the competition for Best Puppy in Show as appropriate, in
order to remain unbeaten. A puppy beaten in competition for Best Puppy in Show may subsequently be exhibited
in all competition for which it was previously eligible. The dog declared Best Puppy in Show, however, must not
compete in any subsequent competition.

Reserve Best in Show must be selected from the Best Opposite Sex and the Reserve Best of Sex to the exhibit
declared Best in Show.
The dogs declared Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show must not compete in any subsequent competition.
Withdrawal from Other Competition: Dogs which become eligible for Best in Show maybe withdrawn from all
other competition, other than breed classes prior to the competition for Best in Show as appropriate in order to
remain unbeaten. A dog beaten in competition for Best in Show may subsequently be exhibited in all competition

not compete in any subsequent competition.
Proviso: For the purposes of this Regulation, dogs beaten in competition for Stud Dog, Brood Bitch, Progeny,
Brace and Team or a Special Award confined to a single breed, will not be considered to be beaten dogs.
13. Exhibits will not be admitted to Best in Show competition after a period of ten minutes has elapsed since the
announcement that exhibits are required for judging, unless they have been unavoidably delayed by previous
judging not being completed on time, and then only with the special permission of the Show Management.
14. Exhibitors must not pick up dogs by their tails and leads when lifting them. This is not acceptable. Exhibitors
should note that such practice would constitute harsh handling and reports of such practice will be referred to
the Committee under Kennel Club Show Regulation F11.
15. All exhibitors must be familiar with Kennel Club Regulation F (Annex B) - Regulations for the Preparation of Dogs
for Exhibition.
16. All dogs resident outside of the UK must be issued with a Kennel Club Authority to Compete number before entry
to the show/event can be made. All overseas entries without an Authority to Compete number will be returned
to the exhibitor/competitor.
17. Dogs in Vehicles on Hot Days. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club
offers the following guidance to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed
events.
• When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday
route, and leave earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.

22.
23.
24.
25.
26.
• If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all.
• The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water
available to drink.
• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog.
• When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle.
• Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty of
water available to drink so your dog stays well hydrated.
• Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended lengths
of time.
Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to dire
results. Please look after your dog’s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE
ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED.
Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the
needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at risk by any action, default, omission
or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the General Committee for
disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors/Competitors are reminded that show
societies have the right under Kennel Club Regulation to refuse any entry.
Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form
and must be Kennel Club registered.
No modifications will be made to this Schedule except by permission of the General Committee of the Kennel
Club, which will be followed by advertisement in the Canine Press wherever possible.
Any owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog is requested to remove as soon as possible
any fouling caused by their dog(s) at any Kennel Club licensed event within the licensed venue and within the
environs of that event including car and caravan parks and approaches. Adequate receptacles for the disposal
of such fouling will be provided.
Should the Judge be prevented from fulfilling his/her engagement the committee reserve to themselves the right
of appointing another judge to fulfill his/her duties. Exhibitors are at liberty to withdraw from competition but no
entrance fee can be returned.
An announcement prior to the date of closing of entries in Our Dogs or Dog World of any alteration or addition to
the schedule or these regulations shall be deemed sufficient notice thereof.
The committee will not be responsible in any way for any claim for injury or compensation occasioned by or arising
out of the holding of the Show, or by any reason of the act or default of any person in attendance or present
thereat.
If acknowledgement of receipt of entry is required, a stamped addressed postcard must be enclosed with the
entry.
No person shall carry out punitive correction or harsh handling of a dog at any time whilst at the licensed venue
including its environs, car park and caravan parks and approaches.
The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club licensed events must at all
times ensure that the dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car
and caravan parks and approaches. This Regulation applies before (at any time during the set up period at the
venue), during the event and afterwards (at any time during the breakdown of the event).
IMPORTANT NOTICES TO ALL EXHIBITORS
• DOGS IN VEHICLES •
Your dog is vulnerable and AT RISK if left in a vehicle in high temperatures
and even on days considered as slightly warm. Please take care of your
dog. If your dog is found to be at risk forcible entry to your vehicle may
be necessary without liability for any damage caused.
• DOG FOULING •
EXHIBITORS/HANDLERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CLEARING UP
OF ANY FOULING DONE BY DOG(S) IN THEIR CHARGE
PLEASE REMEMBER THE ONUS IS ON YOU TO CLEAR UP AFTER
YOUR DOG(S) — SO PLEASE BE PREPARED!
Only dogs entered for competition or NFC
can be admitted to the Show
The Kennel Club request that, for safety reasons,
all dogs in soft cages are NOT left unattended at any time
IT IS ILLEGAL TO SMOKE IN THE VENUE
PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO RIGHTS
The Organisers would like to bring the regulation on photography and filming to the attention of
exhibitors, trade stands, press and visitors. It is a condition of all those attending the event that
no filming or other form of recording may be taken or made at the venue without express written
permission of the organisers. The taking of photographs in the venue for sale or reward is strictly
prohibited except with the written permission of the Organisers. Press accredited photographers are
provided with permission to take photographs ONLY for use in newspapers, magazines and internet
sites - this is for news purposes only. There is no objection to the general public taking photographs
or video film of general views of the Show, provided that these are for private use only. Specific dogs
may be photographed only with the approval of the exhibitor.
No photography or filming is permitted in breed judging rings whilst judging is actually taking place.
However, judges may allow it to happen at the end of classes or after the Challenge Certificate is
awarded. Filming and flash photography is allowed from outside the rings at all times unless the
operation of the camera is actually affecting exhibits. However, if a powerful flash unit is used or it is
clear that exhibits are being affected, a ring steward or the judge is empowered to stop the person
concerned. Cinematograph or television equipment may only be used at the Show if a permit has
been issued by the Organisers.
