As a Club we endeavour to assist judges to progress with their experience of judging Basenjis. We have
liaised with the Kennel Club and have obtained permission to hold 'Special Awards' at our Championship
Shows where hopefully there is already a sizeable captive audience who will enter their dogs and make
a reasonable number for the invited judge to go over.
The Special Awards are judged as an entirely separate entity from the Championship Show. Therefore
IF YOUR DOG IS BEATEN IN ANY OF THE SPECIAL AWARDS, IT IS NOT CLASSED AS A BEATEN
DOG FOR THE PURPOSES OF THE CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW AND IT IS NOT DISQUALIFIED FROM
CHALLENGING IN THE MAIN SHOW.
The formal KC regulation reads as follows: 'A dog beaten in competition for a Special Award confined to
one breed is not considered to be a beaten dog for the purposes of Regulations F(1)26 and 27.'.
N.B. Only those dogs which have been entered into the main show are eligible for entry into the Special
Award classes.
The Special Awards are arranged entirely as a method of helping B and C list judges, so please do
support and enter if you can - THANK YOU!

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR JUDGES
Championship Show — Mr Glen Dymock (Afrika)
I guess UK Basenji people will associate me mostly with Ch/Aus Ch Afrika Royal Challenge, the last
Basenji owned by the great Veronica Tudor-Williams (of the Congo) whose association with the BCOGB
was indelible and stretched right back to the Club’s formation 75 years ago. ‘Aussie’ was bred in Australia
by my mother, Marie Dymock, and sired seven UK champions, some of whom were top producers in their
own right, including Ch St Erme Jolly Swagman and Ch Zizunga Satin Doll.
At the age of seven, I began competing in a few ‘child handling’ classes, as they were then known. Shortly
afterwards, I began to handle my family’s dogs in breed classes and my parents must have realised I was
hooked as I was made a partner in the kennel while still in my teens.
I have very happy memories of attending Basenji specialties in Sydney with a team of as many as ten
dogs. Some of these shows had 200 Basenjis entered and were great celebrations for the breed. The one
event which sticks out in my mind above all others would be ‘The Fula Memorial Show’ which was judged
by Miss Tudor-Williams in 1975 and held in honour of her beloved African import.
The Afrika dogs fared well at specialty level and in fact in their day held the record for the number of
specialties won. However, my mother was always much more proud of the fact that Afrika bloodlines
formed the basis of many of the successful kennels in Australia which came afterwards.
Among the kennel’s better-known dogs were the influential stud dog Aus Ch Afrika Little Tiger (Congo and
Andersley lines) and his granddaughter Afrika Dubonnet (dam of Aussie) who was retired after winning
Reserve BIS at the Sydney Royal Easter Show while still a puppy. A great favourite of mine was her
grandson Aus Ch Afrika The Omen, the first dog I owned in my own right.
I was first approved to judge Basenjis at CC level, in Australia, in 1988 and five years later had the great
honour of judging the BCOGB championship show, after which I moved to the UK. I have also judged
Basenji specialties in Australia, Finland, Sweden and Norway. The last time I judged the breed in the UK
was at Crufts in 2008.
In ‘real life’, my partner of more than 20 years is Simon Parsons, an honorary life member of the BCOGB
who judged this show in 1994. Simon and I share a number of canine interests, but chief among these must
surely be the Basenji breed. We have also made up champions in Welsh Corgis and French Bulldogs.
I feel greatly honoured to be judging the BCOGB championship show, especially for a second time and in
this platinum jubilee year, and am very much looking forward to seeing you all and your dogs.
Special Awards — Mrs Wendy Cross (Sallidene)
In 1979, we entered the world of dog showing with a GSD who was of the English/Germanic type, he won
several times but showing was not enough for him and he was donated to the RAF as a guard dog. Then
followed English Springer Spaniels and we acquired a bitch, who my late husband made up to Champion
and I showed a dog who was full of energy but not keen on showing.
I then decided to have Deerhounds and made up my first bitch to Champion and several more followed
and although they won well, they were not good enough having had a Champion first.
Ill health made us both retire from showing but we continued with judging and stewarding which had
begun several years earlier. I currently award CCs in Deerhounds, Dachshunds and English Springer
Spaniels.
I have been fortunate to have judged Basenjis on several occasions, the last time being at City of
Birmingham Championship Show, without CCs with a really good entry and no absentees. I have also
attended a Breed Specific Seminar for your breed which I found most interesting as this breed is clearly
quite different in various ways from many others.
I am currently President of The Hound Club of East Anglia, Luton Canine Association and The Isle of Ely
Canine Society.
I am looking forward very much to judging your Special Awards classes at your Championship Show on
14th September 2014 and meeting both you and your dogs.

of age on the first day of the Show. Where the Best in Show is a puppy it will also automatically be Best Puppy in Show respectively.
Similarly, if the Reserve Best in Show is a puppy which has only been beaten by an adult dog it will also automatically be Best Puppy
in Show respectively. Consequently, selection of Best Puppy in Show must follow the selection of Best in Show respectively.
Best Puppy in Show must be selected from puppies which have been judged and which are unbeaten by any other puppy.

The dogs declared Best in Show and Reserve Best in Show must not compete in any subsequent competition.
Withdrawal from Other Competition: Dogs which become eligible for Best in Show maybe withdrawn from all other competition, other

for Best in Show may subsequently be exhibited in all competition for which it was previously eligible. The dogs declared Best in
Show and Reserve Best in Show however, must not compete in any subsequent competition.
Proviso: For the purposes of this Regulation, dogs beaten in competition for Stud Dog, Brood Bitch, Progeny, Brace and Team or
a Special Award confined to a single breed, will not be considered to be beaten dogs.
13. Exhibits will not be admitted to Best in Show competition after a period of ten minutes has elapsed since the announcement that
exhibits are required for judging, unless they have been unavoidably delayed by previous judging not being completed on time, and
then only with the special permission of the Show Management.
14. No modifications will be made to this Schedule except by permission of the General Committee of the Kennel Club, which will be
followed by advertisement in the Canine Press wherever possible.
15. All exhibitors must be familiar with Kennel Club Regulation F (Annex B) - Regulations for the Preparation of Dogs for Exhibition.
16. All dogs resident outside of the UK must be issued with a Kennel Club Authority to Compete number before entry to the show/event
can be made. All overseas entries without an Authority to Compete number will be returned to the exhibitor/competitor.
17. Dogs in Cars on Hot Days. Your dog is vulnerable and at risk during hot weather and the Kennel Club offers the following guidance
to help guide you through the do’s and don’ts travelling to and whilst at KC licensed events.
• When travelling to a show please take a moment to consider whether the route to the show is on a busy holiday route, and leave
earlier to avoid increased time in traffic jams.
• If your vehicle is not air-conditioned seriously consider whether travelling to the show is a good idea at all.
• The vehicle should be as fully ventilated as possible, and plenty of stops should be taken, with lots of water available to drink.
• Ensure your dog is not sitting in full sunlight. There should be plenty of free flowing air around the dog.
• When at the show, never leave your dog in the vehicle.
• Keep the dog in the shade - take your own shade for example a large umbrella and always have plenty of water available to
drink so your dog stays well hydrated.
• Avoid your dog taking part in unnecessary exertion, or from standing in exposed sunlight for extended lengths of time.
Remember, if you feel hot your dog is very likely to feel much hotter and dehydrated, and this could lead to dire results. Please look
after your dog’s welfare. WARNING: IF YOUR DOG IS FOUND TO BE AT RISK FORCIBLE ENTRY TO YOUR VEHICLE MAY
BE NECESSARY WITHOUT LIABILITY FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED. Anyone whose dog is entered at a Kennel Club licensed
event should take all reasonable steps to ensure the needs of their dog(s) are met, and should not put a dog’s health and welfare at
risk by any action, default, omission or otherwise. Breach of Kennel Club Regulations in this respect may be referred to the General
Committee for disciplinary action under Kennel Club Rules and Regulations. Exhibitors/Competitors are reminded that show societies
have the right under Kennel Club Regulation to refuse any entry.
18. Not for Competition entries will be accepted. Details of each dog so entered must be recorded on the entry form and must be Kennel
Club registered.
19. Any owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog is requested to remove as soon as possible any fouling caused
by their dog(s) at any Kennel Club licensed event within the licensed venue and within the environs of that event including car and
caravan parks and approaches. Adequate receptacles for the disposal of such fouling will be provided.
20. Should the Judge be prevented from fulfilling his/her engagement the committee reserve to themselves the right of appointing
another judge to fulfill his/her duties. Exhibitors are at liberty to withdraw from competition but no entrance fee can be returned.
21. An announcement prior to the date of closing of entries in Our Dogs or Dog World of any alteration or addition to the schedule or
these regulations shall be deemed sufficient notice thereof.
22. The committee will not be responsible in any way for any claim for injury or compensation occasioned by or arising out of the holding
of the Show, or by any reason of the act or default of any person in attendance or present thereat.
23. If acknowledgement of receipt of entry is required, a stamped addressed postcard must be enclosed with the entry.
24. No person shall carry out punitive correction or harsh handling of a dog at any time whilst at the licensed venue including its environs,
car park and caravan parks and approaches.
25. The owner, exhibitor, handler or other person in charge of a dog at Kennel Club licensed events must at all times ensure that the
dog is kept under proper control whilst at the licensed venue, including its environs, car and caravan parks and approaches. This
Regulation applies before (at any time during the set up period at the venue), during the event and afterwards (at any time during
the breakdown of the event).
IMPORTANT NOTICES TO ALL EXHIBITORS
• DOGS IN CARS •

and even on days considered as slightly warm. Please take care of your
dog. If your dog is found to be at risk forcible entry to your vehicle may
be necessary without liability for any damage caused.
• DOG FOULING •
EXHIBITORS/HANDLERS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CLEARING UP
OF ANY FOULING DONE BY DOG(S) IN THEIR CHARGE
PLEASE REMEMBER THE ONUS IS ON YOU TO CLEAR UP AFTER
YOUR DOG(S) — SO PLEASE BE PREPARED!
Only dogs entered for competition or NFC

The Kennel Club request that, for safety reasons,
all dogs in soft cages are NOT left unattended at any time
IT IS ILLEGAL TO SMOKE IN THE VENUE
PHOTOGRAPHY & VIDEO RIGHTS
The Organisers would like to bring the regulation on photography and filming to the attention of
exhibitors, trade stands, press and visitors. It is a condition of all those attending the event that
no filming or other form of recording may be taken or made at the venue without express written
permission of the organisers. The taking of photographs in the venue for sale or reward is strictly
prohibited except with the written permission of the Organisers. Press accredited photographers are
provided with permission to take photographs ONLY for use in newspapers, magazines and internet
sites - this is for news purposes only. There is no objection to the general public taking photographs
or video film of general views of the Show, provided that these are for private use only. Specific dogs
may be photographed only with the approval of the exhibitor.
No photography or filming is permitted in breed judging rings whilst judging is actually taking place.
However, judges may allow it to happen at the end of classes or after the Challenge Certificate is
awarded. Filming and flash photography is allowed from outside the rings at all times unless the
operation of the camera is actually affecting exhibits. However, if a powerful flash unit is used or it is
clear that exhibits are being affected, a ring steward or the judge is empowered to stop the person
concerned. Cinematograph or television equipment may only be used at the Show if a permit has
been issued by the Organisers.

straight on at the roundabout at Tesco and follow the road into Milton Village. After about ¼
mile, there is a right-turn signed Community Centre. Take this turn (Coles Road) and follow
the road along and you will see the Centre and large car park to the right-hand side.
By Rail — A range of train operators serve Cambridge Railway Station approx. 6 miles
from Milton. Taxis are available but exhibitors with dogs are reminded to check with local taxi
