BOSTON PUBLIC LIBRARY
COMMUNITY MEETING: The
trustees of the Boston Public
Library are holding a series of
community meetings to discuss the
system’s budget shortfall and what
measures may be taken to close the
gap. This may include the closing of
neighborhood branches and the
curtailing of hours. The Dorchester
meeting is Saturday, April 3, at
Codman Square Branch Library
from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

STATE REPRESENTATIVE
MARTIN WALSH: The legislator
will bring us up to date on items of
interest to the neighborhood.
GABRIELLE BERCY, MD,
MPH, doctor of obstetrics and
gynecology at Carney Hospital will
discuss women’s health issues.
MAUREEN WHITE, principal of
Elizabeth Seton Academy in Lower
Mills, will tell the group about the
high school.

ELECTION RESULTS
The entire incumbent slate of
officers and executive board
members were re-elected to office
at the March meeting. Many
thanks to these AANA volunteers
for there continued dedication
and hard work..
RAFFLE TICKETS to the annual
$10,000 DINNER on April 22 to
benefit the Dorchester Day Parade
will be available at the monthly
meeting or by contacting Pat
O’Neill at 617-265-5397.
Ticket value is $100. Chances are
$5 each; 3 for $12.

FUNDRAISER: Tim and Diane
Feehily have three children,
Catherine, 16, Tim, 15, and Mark,
12. Catherine is profoundly deaf,
autistic, and has learning disabilities. Mark has Duchenne’s
Muscular Dystrophy and will soon
need a wheelchair. This will help
the family meet needs such as an
accessible van and wheelchair
access at home. Music, dancing,
raffles, and silent auction are
planned. Tickets, $20 and $50, are

The annual city-wide spring
cleanup. Meet at 319 Ashmont
Street at 9 a.m. for coffee and
donuts and to pick up gloves, rakes
and trash bags. Many hands make
for light work so join the team to
keep our neighborhood clean and
beautiful.

CONSTRUCTION NEWS
ASHMONT STATION: The
MBTA has announced that the final
stage of the station’s construction
will begin on April 15.
J.F. White Contracting
Company has been awarded a $9.5
million contract to finish the station.
The work includes, but is not
limited to, glazed curtain wall and
stainless steel column covers, bus
and trolley canopy, polycarbonate
roof glazing system, miscellaneous
acoustical panels and ceilings,
signage, fare collection equipment;
landscaping, concrete sidewalks and
ornamental steel fences. The North
Headhouse will open this fall, the
South Headhouse will be closed for
a couple of weeks but will
otherwise be open throughout
construction. Shelters along the
busway, with benches, will be
installed by this fall. There will be
no major shutdowns; the work will
be done in the daytime. Substantial
completion is anticipated in May
2011, with final completion

DORCHESTER AVE.
PROJECT:
The Massachusetts Department of
Transportation website
www.mass.gov/massdot/dotave is
devoted to keeping residents
and area businesses informed about
the $15.6 million project. Contact

The Peabody Square Project McCourt Construction has the
contract for the entire 15intersection Dorchester Avenue
Project, initiated by the City of
Boston and funded through Federal
stimulus monies administered by
the Mass. Department of
Transportation. Construction is now
underway at Peabody and Andrew
squares (two of four major
intersections in the project.)
Of the $15 million total project
cost, an estimated $3 million is for
Peabody Square. Improvements will
include the realignment of Talbot
Avenue and the closing of the
Bushnell Street extension (between
the clock park and Store 24)
creating a safer intersection for
automobiles and pedestrians. New
traffic signals will facilitate traffic
flow through the reconfigured
intersection. New or redesigned
open spaces around the Peabody
Square Clock and in front of the
Ashmont Grill will feature “green”
design elements such as permeable
paving and a water garden.
The bulk of the Peabody Square
work is scheduled for completion
this fall, although some planting
may be done in the spring of 2011.
Bike lanes are incorporated in the
intersection designs, and planners
Howard/Stein-Hudson will design
bike lanes for the rest of Dorchester
Avenue, from Lower Mills to
Broadway. Judith Nitsch
Engineering is looking at the
placement and design of crosswalks
between Ashmont and Van Winkle
streets.
