A New Beginning
It is always daunting starting at a
new school. And you will always
feel a little apprehensive about
the unknown. Starting at a new
school is very exciting as there
are different lessons from
primary school, such as
technology, music, drama and
PSHCE. The best part is meeting
new friends. Howden School
offers you lots of exciting lessons,
where you will learn lots of new
things.
The teachers are always willing
to help and advise you if you’re
struggling. There are students
called peer mentors and pastoral
managers who will always help
with personal and school
problems. The pastoral room is
opposite Mr Storey’s science
room, and the peer mentors wear
a bright blue hoodie so they are
easy to spot!
There is lots of food to choose
from at dinnertime. Also at break-
time there are delicious snacks
available like pizza, bagels,
sandwiches and much more.
The school offers
opportunities to visit other
countries. Year 7 this year, has
the chance to visit the South of
France.
PE lessons have a wide range of
activities like, rugby,
trampolining, gymnastics, hockey,
netball, football, volleyball, tennis
and badminton. Even if you don’t
like sports there is always
something you will enjoy.
The school also offers a wide
range of after school
activities (which are
reported elsewhere in the
magazine).
If you travel on the school bus
this gives you the chance to mix
and socialise with students of all
ages. Year 7 lets you meet other
students from other primary
schools and make new friends.
Howden School is a safe and
pleasant environment for
everybody, however should you be
a victim of bullying in the school
go to the pastoral office. The staff
in pastoral will deal with it as the
school operates a zero tolerance
policy against bullying.

Key Stage 3 Rewards Ceremony
On Monday 13th October 2014,
Howden School hosted a rewards
ceremony for KS3 pupils. This
was to congratulate them on
their year’s achievement. They
based their rewards on attitude
to learning and attainment. Two
pupils from each year were
awarded either an ATL or
attainment award in each subject.
There were also
Accelerated Reading Awards for
Overall Effort and Attainment
given. Finally there were special
awards noting the pupils
outstanding work. These awards
were the ‘Lee Coates Award for
Sportsmanship’, the ‘Helen
Watson Cup for Athletics’,
‘Sporting Achievement for Boys’,
‘Sporting
Achievement for
Girls’, the ‘Barnes Wallis Award
for achievement in Mathematics’,
the ‘Anthony Wilkinson Award for
improvement in Science’, the
‘Creativity in English Award’ and
finally the ‘Gloria Grice Award for
best overall attendance in Key
Stage 3’.
Everyone did very well and
deserved their awards and made
the school very proud. Also some
GCSE music students sang and
played in front of the audience,
they were
amazing and very
talented.
Overall the night was very
successful and no one tripped up
on the stairs!

Year 8 Globe Trip
Thursday 18th September saw a large group
of Year 8 students along with a few of our
teachers take a trip to London to experience
the Globe Theatre, the home of many
Shakespearean plays.
This opportunity allowed our students to
see for themselves this amazing venue, as
well as a few other famous London sights on
the way.
Once again our students were a credit to
Howden School and both staff and students
had a great day.
Year 8 Shakespeare Day
On Friday 10th October, all Year 8 students
took part in Shakespeare Day. The year group
had been working on a unit of work called “The
Wonderful World of Shakespeare” since the
beginning of the school year, with a particular
focus on the play Macbeth.
The day allow ed stud ents to
consolidate their learning of the play through
a variety of fun workshops including: writing a
newspaper article on the death of King
Duncan, creating a storyboard of the main
scenes using an interactive computer
programme and taking part in a dramatic
interpretation of a scene.
In the morning, the students were treated
to a comedy-spoof performance of the
opening of the play by GCSE drama students.
At the end of the day students got the
opportunity to put Macbeth on trial, with the
questioning coming from our very own
students. A fun day was had by all.
‘Round about the caldron go;
In the poison’d entrails throw.—
Toad, that under cold stone,
Days and nights has thirty-one;
Swelter’d venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i’ the charmed pot!
Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and caldron bubble.’
Student quotes:
“It was a great day with
great activities.”
“I think that Shakespeare
Day was fun and I
wouldn’t change it in ay
way.”

Key Stage 4 Information & Key Dates
All of Year 10 and some Year 11 students completed their Of Mice and Men assessment on
Tuesday 21st October. This follows an impressive performance by the Manchester Theatre
Company who came and performed an adaption of the play on Wednesday 8th October.
Good luck to all involved.
Congratulations to all students
who recently completed their
Duke of Edinburgh practice
expedition.
KS4 ICT students visited Aerial Extreme's High Ropes Adventure Courses for a fun day
involving a series of challenging obstacles set at varying heights above the ground. Students
tackled obstacles such as rope bridges, scramble nets, swinging logs and balance beams,
plus negotiated a number of team challenges designed to test a group’s ability to work
together and communicate effectively.
The trip formed part of the student’s skills development for a coursework assessment where
students will demonstrate their creative flair by combining multimedia components to create
a vibrant, energetic or simulating interactive product.
Clubs at Howden School
Our reporters have been to
examine a number of clubs
that happen in Howden
School, and these are just a
few so far that they have
chosen to report on.

was really interesting. We
learnt how to identify a finger
print on a glass by getting a
beaker then got some
sellotape and found the finger
print on the glass and got the
sellotape and put it on top of
the finger print and the
sellotape copied the finger
print onto the sellotape.
When you start this club you
will get a few business cards
and product brochures to
either look at or even ask
people if they would like buy

Chess Club by Jackson
Woodrow
Come to Chess Club during
weekday lunchtimes
(excluding Fridays) 12-12:30.
Chess Club is run by Mrs
Russell in room 12. It is very
popular. Don’t worry about
your lunch as you can eat it
there. There is a peer mentor
in there every day, so if you
want to learn how to play
chess you can ask him (I did).
When you’ve played a game
of chess you can play a quick
game of draughts because
chess games can take 20
minutes!
Top Tips to Survive Winter
With another bitter winter being forecast for this
year, our reporter Elizabeth Reeves has put
together a useful list of clothes to help you beat
the cold. Keeping warm over the winter months
can help prevent colds, flu or more serious
health conditions such as heart attacks,
pneumonia and depression.
Wrap up warm, inside and out. Layer your
clothing to stay warm
and wear shoes with
a good grip if you
need to go outside. If
possible, stay inside
during a cold period
if you are unwell or
have any existing
medical problems.
