2005 Annual Club Magazine
Editorial
St Johns continues to go from strength to
strength. This magazine is a testament to all the
work that goes into this club to make it what it is
today.
A special mention this year to our more than 60
coaching staff across our 18 teams. To give up
ones time and effort to help young people get a
game of football each week takes a lot of effort.
Any person who volunteers their time to help
and support young people in our community
deserves a large thank you.
At St Johns as much as we are proud of our 5
grand final winning teams. we are equally proud
of our other 13 teams that did their best week in
week out.
The club faced a new challenge this year with
Ciaron Burns taking on the Presidents role.
Ciaron not only steered the executives to new
heights he fostered a good will in the club and
returned the club back to some of our old traditions.
George Habib stepped up to the job of acting
treasurer as I had an extended honeymoon.
George’s professionalism in bookkeeping was
exceptional. Thank you to Lawrence Karam for
his help.
George Saab and Mark Brown the two remaining executive members deserve special mention for their hard dedicated work in their
respective roles.
To my wife Melissa and all the executives wife's
thank you for your understanding and support
of us.
To Bill Allazze, Pierre Fayed, Mark Brown,
coaches and all who provided photos and articles for this years magazine a special thank
you.
We hope you enjoyed the 2005 season and this
Magazine will keep good memories alive for
you.
Fady Ghanem (Treasurer)
George Bakhos was an inspiration to all this
year not only doing an exceptional job as secretary and running the canteen but also coaching
a team of mainly new players to the Semi’s.

Patrons’s Report
As the curtain goes down on the 2005 season and the clubs 52nd year I would like to thank Ciaron
Burns, George Bakhos, George Habib, George Saab, Mark Brown and Fady Ghanem for their commitment and organisation in this successful year.
With 312 registered players the club was again a force to be reckoned with, fielding 18 teams in
the Canterbury Bulldogs Junior Rugby League Competition from under 6 to C Grade. Of these 18
teams 16 were in competition with 12 making the semi- finals. Of these 12 teams 6 made the
Grand Final and of these 6 grandfinalists St John's won five Premierships. I congratulate the
Premiers under, 9, 10r, 11, 14 and First XIII along with all players who competed with tenacity and
sportsmanship throughout the year and gained the Club First position in the Club Championship.
St John's Eagles is very much part of the local community, not only well respected for their hard
and fair play but for their community work namely ANZAC DAY march, Mothers Day and Gala Days
events. Congratulations always goes to the coaches and players but we all know the club wouldn't
be in the position they are today without the managers, trainers, canteen workers, mums and dads
who transport the players and all the supporters who encourage the players and coaches so
strongly. For all the significant adults in the adolescent's lives who take time to relate; Thank you.
The school teachers at Holy Spirit College who coach Rugby League teams owe a big debt to St
John's Eagles. Holy Spirit students love their rugby league, when we call for tryouts for any league
team we have over 50 gearing up. Invariably the school teams comprise many St John's Eagles
players with their discipline and skills they have learnt from their coaches and experiences from St
John's weekend football. Needless to say Holy Spirit College dominate their inter- school competitions with all teams making the Grand Final this year with all but one winning the Premiership.
This has been a tradition since the school began. This years Arrive Alive Team were controversially beaten in the last minute of the Bulldogs District Final; a fine achievement. An U/15 Holy Spirit
team represented the Bulldogs in the NSW All Schools Carnival and were undefeated in all five
games to take out this Championship event. Congratilations to all Holy Spirit players and thank
you St. Johns for all you have done in preparing them. As we know many will go on to make a
fine career in the game.
The association with the club and Holy Spirit College has never been stronger. As I look to the
future I am certain this proud association with St John's Eagles will continue and 2006 will be
another successful year.Your generosity and unpaid efforts will always be appreciated.

Presidents Report
Well what a great season 2005 has turned out to be for St. Johns. Out of 16
teams in competitions 12 made it to semi finals with 6 making it to the grand
final. Of this, 5 teams went on to become premiers. St. Johns has once again
taken out the Mod club championship the Senior club championship and the
Overall club championship. Sponsorship is at an all time high and along with a
great year in our canteen the clubs finances have never looked better.
All our success this year is a credit to all involved at the club not least the players, your efforts mirror the success we have achieved. With a heavy emphasis on Code of Conduct
this year you have shown great discipline, congratulations and thank you.
To all our coaches and your coaching staff, your professional attitude and commitment has led in
no small part to a successful 2005. The time and effort you put into preparing your teams has been
great, well done.
A successful club needs good leadership. This year the committee has been a pleasure to be
involved with. They are all hard working, enthusiastic, committed guys who really care about St.
Johns. I must make special mention of our Secretary George Bakhos, I have never seen anyone
work harder. In his first year in this position his efforts have been outstanding.
While this year has been a success we must always look to continue to improve. There are areas
we will be pushing to pick up our efforts in next year and the years to come. The main area would
be parent involvement. We encourage new parents and old parents of the club to get involved. Put
your name forward as a manager or trainer, help out in the canteen or just step up as a timekeeper we would love and appreciate your help.
I would like to make special mention of this years First XIII, only the fifth premiership we have won
since the inception of the under 15's as our premier side in the club. To Chris, Claude, Mark, Joey,
Fady and the entire team congratulations.
A club this size needs plenty of finances to operate and sponsorship is integral to this. To all of
sponsors thank you for your valued assistance. To our major sponsor Punchbowl Ex Services and
Community Club a special thanks for your continued support, it is very much appreciated.
I hope 2005 has been an enjoyable time for you at St. Johns. I look forward to seeing you all in
2006 where we face the challenge of continued and further success. Enjoy your break and come
back re-charged for the year ahead.
I wish you all and your families a safe and Happy Christmas and New Year.
Ciaron Burns (President)

Secretary’s Report
WOW! What a year, 2005 has come and gone and St Johns has enjoyed a stellar year. This year we
fielded 18 teams and had 312 registered players. In under 6s we fielded two sides who played in a
non competition format. Of the other 16 teams we fielded, 12 were semi-finalists and out of those
12 teams 6 were grand finalists and out of those 6 teams 5 were Premiers. Congratulations to the
9s, 10res, 11s, 14s, and yes even our FIRST XIII for winning their competitions. Well done also to
the 10s who narrowly lost in the big one. And to all the other teams, job well done and maybe 2006
will be your year. On top of that we must congratulate the 9s and10s for competing in knockouts
against teams from all over NSW and both teams being knockout champions.
On the representative scene St Johns had a fantastic year with 11 current players featuring in Canterbury sides from
Harold Matthews to Premier League. This year we saw old boy Clifford Maanu make his First Grade debut for the
Sharks, Cliffy played for St Johns from 1995-2001. It is also a testament to everyone involved in St Johns that we must
be doing something right as Canterbury has invited 21 of our players from Under 15s to Under 18s to trial for rep sides
for 2006. We wish all these boys the best and urge them to strive to do the best they can.
This year also saw St Johns win the Mod, International and Overall Cub Championships, and in another milestone Steve
Page from our 18s was voted best player in the Canterbury Bankstown District for Under 18s to A Grade.
Congratulations must also go to Adam Rehayem from our 14s for winning a Gow Gates Scholarship to the NSWRL
Academy.
Off the field St Johns also enjoyed great success as the club came together at functions like our Family B.B.Q at Begnell
Oval which was attended by 500 people. The Red Faces night was a great night. Although not every team had an act
every team was present on the night to encourage all the acts. Congratulations to the Under 6s and 7res on winning
Red Faces. The Gala Days and Mothers Day promotion are the envy of the League. All visiting teams were surprised
on Gala Day that they received medallions and were allowed on the jumping castle and even had their face painted
for FREE; and as always the mums were very grateful for the glass of bubbly and roses on Mothers Day. The way the
St Johns Family rallied behind their teams on grand final days was also commented on by all the other clubs and
Canterbury officials and I assure you the kids really love seeing a big and vocal crowd supporting them. They also
loved running through the Grand Final banner designed and made by the Mamary Family, I believe all the family had
some input except Noel. Undoubtedly the biggest highlight of the year off the field would have to be the Sportsman's
Dinner with over 260 people in attendance it was truly a great success. A big thanks goes out to George Saab, Julie
Brown, Mark Brown and Fady Ghanem for all their hard work in organising and planning of the night.
All the success that St Johns enjoyed in 2005 comes back to the people of the club and the effort everyone puts in.
Without your support none of this would be possible. 2005 saw a lot of new people join our club and the way they put
their hand up and got involved with the club really showed their understanding and showed their pride to be part of
the St Johns family. While everyone gave a hand there are a few people I would like to acknowledge at this point in
time and if I do miss anyone I sincerely apologise. Firstly to Ciaron Burns club president and George Habib vice president these two men were the pillars behind this club while the rest of us got involved in our petty squabbles these
two never lost sight of the big picture and kept the club steered in the right direction congratulations on a job well
done. Also a big thank you to the Abou-Haider, Achmar, Allaze, Ayoub, Azzi, Bakhos, Bayad, Bechara, Bortone, Brown,
Burns, Chakty, El-Azzi, El-Cheik, El-Eche, Fayad, Ghanem, Habib, Haddad, Hennings, Inia, Karam, Khoury, Malkoun,
Mamary, Matuaina, McGrath, Michaels, Nakad, Nasr, Noujam, Paulson, Roumanous, Saab, Safetly, Siale, Singh,
Tarchichi, Tasker and Trostel Families. This year was fantastic because of you.
So once again to ALL players, parents, team officials and the committee of St Johns congratulations on a great year
and thanks for your support. See you in 2006.
George Bakhos (Secretary)

Treasurer’s Report
I am just as surprised as everyone else that I am preparing the 2005 Treasurers
report . I suppose I got this responsibility after our elected treasurer took some
time off to get married and enjoy their Honeymoon (congratulation to Fady and
Melissa)
But before the Honeymoon was the bucks party, a trip to Vegas, half the executive
and some coaches went M I A, incidentally this trip will feature in 2006 on the
popular program C S I, You know with the blue light and all
After looking at previous treasurers reports, I can confidently say that season 2005, financially, has
been the most successful in St Johns history.
This could not be achieved without the contribution of several people, Pierre and Catherine Fayed
who annually take it upon themselves to organise the Chocolate Drive, the many that help in the
canteen each weekend and setting up the field, George Bakhos and his Family, Julie Brown for her
great effort with the sportsman dinner, this year we had 210 in attendance (last year 85), a great
effort for a great night.
For our kids to play a game of Rugby League there are numerous expenses. A club with 300 players, 18 teams, 65 people on coaching staff, a training ground plus lighting as well as our home
ground, training equipment, first aid kits, shorts, socks .All of this has a cost factor.
Our sponsors provide good financial support through their donations. Special thanks to Punchbowl
R S C, also Paul Tycehurst and C B D J R L whose grants are really appreciated (both Canterbury
Leagues and Revesby Workers) and of course all the other team Sponsors whose contributions are
invaluable.
Finally for season 2006 we look forward to starting the year in a very sound financial position for
the first time ever.

Great Season
Our Under 6 blacks played well this season and will get a lot better in years to come. The team
recorded three wins in the year and another in a post season gala day. The children gave 100% in
every game they played and each one enjoyed playing.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and children for their support and effort
throughout the season, and I would like to also thank Norm (trainer), Catherine (trainer), and
Carlene (manager) for their help, both on and off the field.

Under 6 White
Great Season
St Johns Under 6 Whites had a lot of new players to the team but we also saw the return of our
youngsters from last year. The skills and abilities soon came out in the beginning of the season
rather than the end and developed a lot of exciting games to watch.
The best highlights of the season was when we played Dragons in both the home and the away
games. The two teams are equally matched and both sides enjoyed playing with each other.
Once again for another year I would like to thank Pauline Brown (coach) for all her time, patience
and dedication to the team . I would also like to thank Lynette Brown(manager) for all her work
and early wake ups to score and finally to Pierre Fayad (trainer) for all that yummy water supply
each week and to the parents for bringing the children both to training and to the games.

Is our tackling machine and a player that never says ‘I give up',if he got tackled more than
likely he would turn his way out of their hands and make more ground.
From last year to this year you would not think it is the same person (it must be the boots)
Leilas biggest asset was scoring from dummy half.
changed dramatically from last year. He ditched the red frogs and hit the try line and
from that point there was no stopping him.
From being lost at the concept and thinking he had to tackle his own team member to
tackling anything that came his way and making sure they stay down.
is one of the new players and also is the youngest player. He showed a lot of improvement
from the beginning of the season to the end.
This is Nathans second year and he is a great tackler for the team. With another year in

has another year in under 6s and shows the ability like his brother to do some very good
tackling and towards the end of the season we saw that skill come out.
This is Suzies second year in under 6s and she showed us a couple of good runs. Suzie will
have fun in the under 7s next year.
is one of our new players and he looked like he really enjoyed the game.lt was a new
experience in learning with his team.
Shamie was our first receiver and improved a lot since last year. She should also have a lot of
fun in the under 7s.
is our star player. If there was a play to read he was 'the man'. James would find any gap and
if not he would create one, his skills and abilities are way beyond under 6s.

Semi Finalist
What a great season of football with many memorable moments to look back on. We started the
year with six players from last year and four new ones that hadn't played before. From our first
game I knew we had a very good team. We ended up with 12 wins, 3 loses and a draw in the 16
rounds. The finals proved to be too much for the boys losing both the pre-lim and semi final, but
learning some valuable lessons and experiences. I am very proud of every one of them for such
a wonderful year. They all played a big role in all our success for the season. Some of the highlights were beating Dragons on their turf, playing at Telstra Stadium and the Show ground and all
the players scoring points this year, especially Fatu who scored a try in every game.
I would like to thank all the parents that helped out at training, our touchies Robert Mansour and
Eddie Saade and all the coaching staff.

Enthusiastic runner, always tried his best in defence.
Very good footballer, played above his age, third highest point scorer.
Our captain and best player, Man of the Match in every game. Lead by example and would
not be the same team without him. Out scored, out tackled and out ran everybody.
Our acting half with safe hands and always keen in defence.
Eager runner with the ball, always involved and improved with every game.
Our first receiver, good ball skills and chased in defence till he got his man.
Strong hitups and some hard tackles, could have scored more tries, player of the future.
Keen runner with the ball, enthusiastic tackler.
Would always break the first tackle when running with the ball, and tried hard in defence.
Strong runner with the ball, very good in defence, putting on some big hits.

Under 7 Reserves
Semi Finalist
The St Johns Under 7res was formed 4 days before the competition started. We started the season with 9 players of
which 3 were girls (Georges angels) and out of the 9 only 2 had played football previously - Stephanie and Domonique.
Two weeks into the competition, we recruited Brandan into the side. The aim of the season was to learn the basics of
rugby league and more importantly to have FUN.
This side renewed my faith in rugby league and what it stood for. Every week these kids would turn up to training keen
to learn and would implement everything we tried at training into the following weeks game. They developed a strong
bond and urged each other to always do their best. These kids really grasped the concept that rugby league is a TEAM
sport and to succeed everyone has to contribute.
The most pleasing aspect of this side is the fact that they always believed in themselves and no one ever shirked their
responsibilities; this was most evident in the game against Moorebank in the last competition round. Moorebank were
the competition leaders and we needed to win this game to qualify for the semi-finals. The team took the field with
the attitude that there was no way they would come off the field without every player giving it their best shot. In the
end we won the game and qualified for the semi-finals and relegated Moorebank from top spot on the ladder. While
the win was fantastic the most pleasing aspect of the game was the fact that of the seven tries we scored in that game
each was scored by a different player and in defence EVERY player made at least one crucial tackle that stopped the
opposition scoring.
Finally I must thank Vivian my manager, Billy and Louie my trainers and Daniel my assistant coach for all the support
and encouragement that you gave the kids and myself during the year. To the parents thanks for your efforts all year
without you none of this is possible, it was pleasing to see parents fighting over whose turn it was to wash the jerseys you all wanted to do it every week. Also to all the sisters and brothers of our team thanks for your help at training and game days.

Enjoyable Season
The under 8's boys tried their best this season, but with a lack of numbers and commitment from
some team members. The odds were against them from the start, so it was a very difficult season.
Although we only won one game some of the boys were very competitive and tried their hardest
all the time.
I would like to thank the under 7's Coach, Manager and Trainer as well as Fatu Togagae, John
Kaufusi, John Paul Nakad, Michael Ranieri, George Saade and their parents.

Scored some great tries and played well all season.
A player with great attitude in defence and attack.
Ran the ball up strong and played with heart.
Was a first year player who scored two good tries
Played his best throughout the season and was the highlight of the team.
Scored some great goals for the team.
Was one of the strongest players and he ran the ball hard.
Played well when he was there.
One of the smallest in the team, but tried hard ever game.
He has improved so much this season in defence and he even scored a try.
Started the season slow, but went on to play great football.

A Grand Final victory well overdue but very much worth the wait. This is a special group of kids
along with their parents who have worked so hard for such a long time therefore there's no-one
more deserving of a little success than this team. It's been a year that everyone involved with this
team will surely treasure. Because not only did we finish the season undefeated in our competition
we also won the state knockout at Ingleburn, taking on the very best U/9 sides from around the
state, were we won all five games on the one day. The impact new players Moustafa Warwar and
Ali Naijarine had on the side was a great bonus along with the improvement from Jake and Fuff
ensured we were in for a big year. I'd like to thank my trainer Robert and my manager Lina who
did a superb job all year, the parents who gave me the full support that I required, our ball-girl
Yazmin and touch judge John. A special mention to my good friend Sionne who's input to the team
cannot be underestimated. Well-done St Johns U/9's I couldn't be a prouder coach and I thank you
all for your effort through-out the 2005 season, enjoy your holidays and I look forward to seeing
everyone back next year to defend our title and maybe even the knockout title.

Our five-eight and didn't she do a top job setting up and scoring tries.
Got back to his best this year what an exciting player to watch on his day.
Brilliant finisher running off April and set up April for her fair share as well.
The man for the occasion in big games, was outstanding in both the knockout grand-final and
the premiership decider.
The most skillful prop and as tough as a player you will find.
Ran the team around the field all year never lost his nerve no matter what the situation.
A player with a hunger for learning new skills and never let me down all year.

A hard nut defender, did so much for the team and we missed him bad in the grand final.
Back after a year off and tried hard all year, one to watch out for next year.
Did a top job at marker and dummy half all year, good team player.
One of the hard workers every teams needs. Just tackles all day without any fuss.
The most courageous little player running around just tackles the house down every game.
First year player tried hard all year and picked up good form by season's end.

Grand Finalists
This season Under 10 Grade had a very challenging season. We started with two new players
(Michael & Riley). They never played football before but they picked up the game really well
throughout the season. Early in the season we lost two games to Berala & two games to Padstow,
so it was time to rebuild our confidence in the third round. We beat Berala 43-22 & Padstow 3327 in the third round. Our young players started to believe in themselves with our main players
leading all the way to the Grand Final. It was tough and frustrating . The boys had more chances
to win the grand final but things didn't go our way and when you try too hard, more mistakes. It
was hard for me to see the kids so upset when they failed to do what they had in mind, but let me
tell you, when you make mistakes that's when you learn and it can only make you a better player.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my coaching staff: trainers - Michael Funaki & John
Tafao, managers - Suliana Siale & Julie Michael, for all their hard work and continuous support that
made my job a lot easier throughout the season. To the parents who help out at training, Siaosi
Siale, Valenitini Vaikeli, Joe Maree, Brett for the passing equipment. A special thank you to our
touch judge Tanielu who supplied our drinks for the boys every week, to Sue Maree for washing
our jersys every week, to George Malkoun for supplying man of the match ($10.00) each week,
to Luisa & family for transporting of players, to our Ball boys Ronny Maree, Dillon Singh, Daniel
Tuulau, Igo Faaui & William Siale, Ball Girls Easther Tafao & Stephanie Michael, Sateki & George
for filming our games every week. A big thank you to our sponsor, Moraitis Family, Leaders in Fresh
Produce for their generous & continuous support. And last but not least I would like to thank all
the St Johns executives, coaching staff, parents, supporters & players for their support throughout
the season.

(second row) His first year in the game, strong player. Needs time to build his confidence.
(hooker) A great hooker, always backs up his team.
(hooker) He's not as big as the other players, but likes to challenge any one on the field.
(second row) He had no fear, very aggressive in both attacking and defence, one of our
tackling machine on the field. (Most Improvement)
(half back) His first year in the game. The smallest one in U10, has a heart of a lion, won't
backdown without a fight. Very smart player. (Most Improvement)
(prop) He can take the ball up in the ruck area, find the hole or just step through the defence.
(second row) You can't run away from him, solid in defence. Got more confidence in his
attacking towards the end of season.
(prop) Gave 100% in almost every game. Loves to put a big hit on the big boys, knows how
to draw the defence before some great off loads.
(prop) Our biggest forward for the season. Started to find confidence towards the end,
unstoppable near the tryline.
(five-eighth) Very smart player, organized some of the best tries from his kicks in the game.
(winger) Start off the season as half-back, mid season found himself on the wing. Often
underestimated by the oppositions by shocking them with his speed & powerful runs.
(winger) He's one of the best wingers in the competition. He scored some of the best tries
the finals. (Player of the Finals)
(second row) Early in the season he was one of our best attacking players, towards the end
he pulled some big tackles.
(centre) What can I say, you've got them all. His tackling power is always a threat to the
oppositions, great ball skills and a deadly step. (Best & Fairest)
(acting full back) His speed in attacking is always a headache to the opposition, his power
ful tackling will put down any player in his way. (Runner Up Best & Fairest).

What a year……It is definitely hard to say Goodbye to another season, but for our boys to go out
like this, is both a beautiful success and fantastic way to finish 2005. The boys had an exciting,
fun-filled, on the edge of your seats season, and a huge Congratulations goes out to the boys for
being the "UNDEFEATED winners of the GRAND FINAL"…We are all very proud of you all and want
to thank the Club, Coaching Staff and the parents for your continuous support.
Last year I told the boys that 2005 would be our year, and they "ROCKED HARD"……
To all the parents, thank you for your support and friendship throughout the year, you have all been
encouraging and a tower of strength.
We wish you all well, take care of yourselves and hope to see you all 2006.
Chaz (Coach) Dina (Manager),Wrex (Trainer) Maria (Assist Trainer)
Player Profiles
Ahmad Jaafar (Road Runner)
This boy has speed and agility when he puts his mind into it. He always gives his best
in every game and playing as our Fullback is reliable for those try saver tackles.
Anthony Semrany: (Bazooka) Captain, Anthony's nickname tells you his type of play. He is a very strong player, and
his hit-ups are just as hard. He has been an excellent leader for the year.
Brandon Winterstein(little general) This player always has vision. He eats and sleeps rugby league and you can tell.
We know he is going to go places. He is a very talented player for his size.
had a great year. Always has explosive strong runs and unbelievable speed…We like
Chaz Matauaina (The Rock)
to call his tackles full stops, cause when he tackles it's the end of the statement.
This player will always have this nickname. He had a great season. For a player his
Daniel Safetly (The Hitman)
size, he has been tackling jumbo jets this year. Beautiful player to watch.
23
Danny Watfa (The Yellow Bus) This player has almost the same strength as his nickname. With full force tackles, he
has left a few injured players shaken & disoriented. His Sonny B flick pass seems to
flow into the hands of a supporting player, and his offence well need….. I say more.
David Haddad (The Destroyer) This player is unstoppable. His defence is effortless, and he has a lot of strength and
heart. He is a deceiving player, by looking at him he looks laid back and casual but
when he hits them up, they are almost in shock
Esperidon Zoghaib ( Secret Weapon)A player with excellent ball skills. He has a beaut flick pass and his defence is off
the scales. He has unbelievable tackles and almost topped the tackle count this year.
George Daoud (Mr Humble)
A player that like his nickname is humble, until given the chance to show his true
strength. He has a beautiful placid nature off the field, on the field is a different story.
Jack Boutcher (Jack the Rippa) Jack is definitely a rippa, he will rip into anything that comes his way. His defence is
fabulous to watch and his aggression to get the ball up field shows good strength
A mad Bulldogs fan, this is Shifty Sherwin all over. He may not have the size but he
Jacob Doueihi (Sherwin)
has the heart and the aggression, he has some beaut kicks and nifty play makes.
Joey Nakad (Pretty damn tough)This player out of soccer to league has shown that he has strength and ability to adjust
to a body contact sport. He also has flawless kicks and always looks good doing it.
Maliko Filino(The Mean Machine) This player is a mean machine, there is no nice with him on the field as he shows no
mercy to anyone coming his way. He has the strength, the aggression and the talent
to be a thinker. He will go along way in life.
Ravin Lotomau (The Rookie)
He maybe our Rookie this year but he definitely surprised us this year. He is an excel
lent tackler, and has a good step, and shows great potential.

My first year as coach was one to remember. With only one loss and winning the GRAND FINAL
22- Nil and making it 4 Grand Finals in a row I couldn't ask for more.
The team showed why they are Greatest team in Mod Football. To say I'm proud of them is an
understatement, this under 11's St Johns outfit is a true Champion side and are winners both on
and off the field.
Each member of the team gave their best and played as a team week in and week out.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my trainer George Abou Haider, for all his hard work
at training and support throughout the year, and my manager Jamal Safetly, the mum of the team
who made my first year run smoothly.
A special thanks to Ghazi & Charlie and all the parents for their help and support in another successful year. Also to Jason, my best mate for all his camera work.
Now I've saved this person to last cause his help, advice and his presence this year I've appreciated immensely. Danny Safetly you are a true friend and I thank you from the bottom of my heart
and I'd like to dedicate this year's grand final win to your brother Johnny who passed away earlier this year.

Under 11 Reserves
Semi Finalist
St Johns Under 11's Reserves had a great year in 2005. Half our team was made up of new players this year coming from different sporting backgrounds.
We started the year off slow but by the fifth round our training had paid off, with the boys being
unstoppable right up to the semi finals.
The biggest highlight of the season was our win against Bankstown Sports Y in the Pre-Lim Semi
Final, they were the only team we had not had a win against but when under pressure the boys
came through.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Coach Harry and Noel whose dedication and
patience saw our boys improve their football skills and attitude every game. Also a big thanks to
Chaz (under 10's reserves coach) for loaning us a couple of his players when required and finally
a big thanks to all the parents who showed up every game giving the kids their support.

The Crushers Challenge
Trophy
Once again the St Johns club was proud to host the visiting Nambour Crushers Under 13 teams
on their annual end of season trip to Sydney for the NRL Finals Series, and as in past years the
Challenge Trophy was up for grabs in 2 friendly matches played at Belmore Oval on 17 September.
As in 2004 the first game pitted our Under 12's against their B side and the St Johns boys proved
they were a force to be reckoned with running out convincing winners over an inexperienced
Nambour team whose players were mostly in their first year of playing. Wilson Faanoi was presented with the Man of the Match award after a superb performance in the game.
The second game against our Under 13's was a very different affair with the Nambour boys eventually taking out the game. They took an early lead and at halftime things were looking comfortable
for them but St Johns never say die attitude saw them slowly pegging back the points until Nambour
scored again and put the game beyond doubt.
Sasha Kerkmez was also awarded the Man of the Match after a great game at fullback.
Congratulations go to the players and officials of all 4 teams for once again putting on a day that
all the boys will remember well into the future. We look forward to next year's trip and to winning
back the Challenge Trophy which Nambour have now held for 3 years out of 4.

Flash Back-1954
The early Days
Rugby League commenced at St Johns on
Thursday 10th June 1954. A school colour
House competition was run during sport.
Bernards won the competition followed by
Pauls, Dominics and Kevins.
The first inter-school games were in preparation for the annual Oakhill football knockouts.
Our sixth class weight team, under the
coaching of Br. Anselm, defeated Bankstown
and Marrickville. On 8th August, in the first
knockout match, we defeated Ashfield 3-0,
but were defeated by Coogee 3-0 in the second match.
Rugby League became a major part of the
school from the early days. The Brothers
taught many lessons of life through sport.
Rugby league was one of the many foundations of a school that started from a humble
beginning.
Even though in the first few years rugby
league was played only in knockouts, it
sounded the beginning of a great club in the
Canterbury Bankstown District.

Under 12
Semi Finalist
2005 was a year of mixed results for our under 12 as we probably under achieved. At times the
boys played brilliant football scoring some wonderful team tries & winning games on the back of
aggressive in your face style defence. We let ourselves down on a few occasions when we weren't
serious about our game.
A very pleasing aspect was seeing the boys turn their losing streak into a positive and finishing the
season as the strongest team. Only a bit of bad luck & one big injury prevented them from really
making a grandstand finish. With a serious approach to their game, every player in the team
improved and contributed well.
Our biggest highlights of the season would have to be vs. Berala (17-26) and vs. Padstow (34-12).
Defence was aggressive in both matches with an excellent defensive line moving up as one unit &
hitting hard. The boys played a very open style in attack using the ball well. If we can learn to play
like that on a more consistent level, a premiership awaits us in the not too distant future. Start
believing in your rugby league and come back next year hungrier than ever for success! Remember,
it starts at training with a positive attitude!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those people who made up the under 12 crew of
2005. Manager, Geeta Singh, thanks for organising all the paperwork particularly on game day, a
job well done. To the trainers, Robert & Charbel, your commitment at training & game day made
my job a lot easier & I thank you. To our parents and supporters, on behalf of the boys & the
coaching staff, I would like to say a BIG thank you for your continued support every match.

had a good season. Excellent support player with the vision to see an opportunity. His defense
also improved when he learnt to be more aggressive.
played with determination at year's end and showed how much of a good player he will devel
op into. Can't wait for next year!
Easily one of the best players in the comp. A brilliant work rate on both side's of the ball. Very
strong runner of the ball & an excellent defender. Wilson is destined for big things.
had a good season. Played consistently well and improved his defence. Quick & light on his
feet & good with the ball in his hands. Well done.
A quiet player who needs to get involved more. Finished the season well scoring a few tries.
My only advice, be more aggressive with your football.
had a good first season of league. Surprised a few people touching down for 6 tries. Good
support player of the ball.
was easily the biggest improver in the team finishing the season strongly. Solid in defence and
learnt to be a good finisher in attack. Looking forward to next year mate.
was unlucky when he broke his arm chasing girls on his bike. Only lasted 3 games, showed
enough ability to indicate he's got potential. Next season Joey.
Probably the smallest player in the comp. Size didn't mean a thing, chopped down bigger play
ers with a fearless attitude in defence. Good with the ball, knows how to put players into holes.
also lacked size but made up for it with a lot of enthusiasm. Lead the team well with good
organisation & direction. His defence also improved.
has the potential to make something from football. Has the size, discipline & the football brain
to develop. Good in defence & attack, especially when he's prepared to ball play at the line.
Once William started getting fit he became a real handful for the opposition. Did his job
every time in attack with hard straight running. His best defence came when he got fired up!
had an unlucky season when he broke his leg. He came back he slowly started to develop. A
lot of potential, just needs to get involved more and show everyone just how good he is.
Once Tresh started training hard it showed in his game. Tough player who can be very dam
aging, especially with the ball. I'm tipping Tresh to have a big year in 2006.
A tough player who plays with plenty of determination. Excellent service from dummy half & a
high work rate in defence. Anthony will develop into a very good player.
Big Lani had a very strong season leading the team .Good football brain, can offload, break
tackles, big hits and goal kick? so much potential, I wish you'd commit more to fitness training.

Under 12 Reserves
Good Season
I've taken over the coaching role of 12's reserve half way through the season from Peter Jex.
It was a challenge as there were players in team who haven't played the game before in saying
that there were players in the team who were exceptionally good. It was very difficult to prepare
the players for the game as their attendance to training and to the game was poor.
I'd like to thank the following people, Peter Jex, Jason Riley, parents, supporters, and all that help,

What a tough player, he tackled and ran hard and scored plenty of tries for the team.
Played well through out the season and he was always keen to play well.
Very cheeky, but a good little player who enjoyed being involved in the game.
One of the forwards, he always tried to run as hard as he could. He did his part in defense.
Played hooker and had a good season. He always backed up and his service from play the ball
was very good.
Always gave his best on the field. His hard runs and tackles were real bonus to the team.
Another good player who ran and tackled hard through out the season.
Was very quick with a good step on him. He was a player when called on to do something spe
cial 9 out 10 he'll come up with a good result.
Played forward and he made many breaks for the team and also defense was great.

Under 13
Good Season
The Under 13's started the year with 31 players competing for 20 positions. After the trial games,
the team was finalised. As the competition progressed it became clear we had some of the smallest sized players in the competition.
The players needed clear attention as individuals before the team could have the ingredients of
mateship, positive attitude and more importantly the power of having a strong team spirit.
The team started off with a mixture of wins and losses. Through persistence and repetition we the
coaching staff started to see positive results. One game we can all recall was the game against
Padstow Panthers. We lost the first game 48-0. In the second game we lead 20-0. Even though we
ended up losing, 20-24 we were the only team in the competition to stand up to them. The
Panthers won the grand final 40-8 and were undefeated all year.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the boys for the challenging year they provided both
as individuals and as a team. Through their efforts one can say they all contributed towards having built a strong foundation and a better understanding of the game, the team and themselves.
Big thanks must go to my coaching staff Jack, Peter and Maria as well as the video crew Mary and
Liza. Further thanks to Mr Borg, Mr Bayad, Mr Dore, Mr Abouhaidar, Mr Gayed, and Tony Merhi.
Last but not least I would like to thank all the parents and supporters for their continued support
and efforts throughout the year.

Premiers
Firstly I would like to congratulate the team on being 2005 premiers. Also I would like to thank each player individually for their efforts & committment.
I promised these boys this year that if they had a serious approach & the right attitude that I would get them to the
Grand Final. I kept my promise & on the day it would be up to the them. The boys worked really hard this year on a
couple of things, we worked hard on getting fit at the beginning of the year & also worked hard on our defence that
paid off Grand Final day.
During the year the boys were well disciplined & their attitude towards training is one of the reasons why we are premiers. Also all the players bonded well with each other & are all good friends. It was all about mental toughness Grand
Final day that's why we won, the boys put the referee & the crowd behind them & concentrated on playing football. I
hope all players enjoyed the experience & never forget how special it is to win a premiership because i personally won't
forget it. You were a pleasure to coach & I don't know if our time together has come to an end but i hope all players
come back next year with the same attitude & the desire to win another premiership.
To my coaching staff Joe Rehayem, John Massoud & Anthony Azzi thank you for your efforts this year & giving up
your time up for these boys. i appreciate it & couldn't have done it without you guys. Also thanks to our team manager Pierre Fayad.
Special thanks to the parents for your support & turning up every sunday morning to support the team. Finally i would
like to thank the club for giving me the opportunity to coach this team & their help through out the season.

A player that always wanted to improve, always put a 100% when he got the chance
Daniel only played 8 games this year due to a serious back injury, when he played you could
see the difference in the team on the field.
Captain, George had a more serious approach this year, George proved that he can be a great
footballer when he puts his mind to it. Played one of his best games on Grand Final day with
brutal defence & brilliant attacking plays. George really improved his ball skills this year,
Chris’s vision & passing game really came of age. Chris worked hard on being a good 5/8th
& understood the position. Chris had a great final series played a major role in our success.

Personally rate him the best back rower in the competition. Adam had a consistent year, his
attack was devastating made it hard for the opposition when he has great ball skills. Pulled
off some brilliant tackles forcing some players to go off the field. Also congratulations on win
ning the best & fairest on Grand Final day & was offered a scholarship with the Bulldogs.
Tried his best, a player with more self belief will become a better player. Also struggled with
fitness due to an ankle injury. A pleasure to coach.
Can be a great footballer if he applies himself. Played some brilliant games.. He was missed
when he went overseas. Fortunately played in the Grand Final & played his heart out.
Played with confidence this year, while guiding the team around the field. His passing game
was always first class & always put his body on the line in defence.
Had his best season. Now I rate Sateki a footballer after the season he had. He is now a more
confident player & played with motivation. Worked hard in defence this year
Played out in the centres & scored lots of tries. Occasionally helped in the forwards when
needed & did a great job especially Grand Final day. Also had brutal defence.
His defence on Grand Final day was brilliant. Was a pleasure to coach & always did what was
asked of him. Played fullback & centre then shifted into the forwards. Also a great attacker.
A very explosive player & a pleasure to watch in full flight. Always improving & will understand
the game more. Scored some great tries this year to put us in a winning position.
Anthony came of age this year. His defence improved dramatically so did his attack. A player
that runs great lines, with self belief can become a valuable player. Also a great team player.
I can only say I rate him the best player in the competition. Really had a consistent year & at
least on 3 occasions with individual brilliance won us games. He has it all to be a great foot
baller. A great goal kicker especially in front of the posts
A pleasure to coach with a great attitude. Improved dramatically this year. Was a nightmare
to tackle & his defence improved. Malakai has size, speed and this will come into effect once
he has more knowledge of the game. .
A real gentleman. Always enthusiastic to train & play, has a great attitude. A gifted player with
a lot of talent & showed it during the season. Every team needs a player like Tarek in it.
A real talented player with a lot of potential. Proved to be a valuable player to our team, his
defence is first class & his attack, effective. John will become a better player with experience.
Always gave it 100%. Probably the smallest player in the comp but it didn’t bother him. Played
some good games & did a great job on the field Grand Final day.
A powerhouse player, trained hard in the off season & it paid off until he was forced out for
the season due to a serious knee injury .Plays football with a lot of passion.
A natural gifted sportsman. His first year in football, showed potential. Always looking for the
ball & for defence. A great attacking footballer with experience can become a game breaker.

FIRST XIII
Premiers
We started the season off with 32 young eager kids at training looking for a position in this historical First XIII squad. After 3 trial games and several training sessions we finally picked the squad
that we were confident would be in contention for a grand final spot.
Before we kicked off our season we took the kids on a 3 day training camp to the Narrabeen
Institute of Sport. After a very successful camp the boys were keen to kick the season off.
We got through the season only losing 2 games, one to the competition leaders who had been
undefeated and the other to last years Premiers. We knew Semi-Final football was a totally different ball game, so this is where the hard work and team efforts were needed.
The boys delivered the goods by knocking off Berala 34-10 in the first Semi and smashing the undefeated Greenacre the following week to secure a spot in the Grand Final.
What can I say, my boys deserved to be there and win the Grand Final because they busted their
guts all season at training and worked as a team to accomplish their goals. 'Well done boys' an outstanding season and a sterling performance in the Grand Final - 'THAT'S GOLD'!
A special thanks must go out to my assistant coach Claude Katter for his invaluable help, my brother Joe Ayoub for helping me train the side, Ignatia Painemilla our injured 21st man, my Manager
Mark Brown for his hard work and endless organisation, and finally Fady Ghanem for all his help
through-out the season.

Good Season
2005 was my first year to coach an international team. At first it was difficult to see what players
we were recruiting & to put them in the right positions. We started to have a few good wins and
it was exciting, then some of the players started to get injuries & we started to lose a few games.
Players started to miss training and the confidence wasn't there by lack of commitment to the
team. It was the most important time to us (coaching staff and players) to work together but it
was hard when you had players come and go.As we were getting near the 11th round we were
looking forward for the top 5th place in the semi but the spirit wasn't there. I guess if you need to
succeed you must give 100% from the beginning to the end.
I would like to thank our manager Joeline Mamary for her job well done also big think to our trainers: George Saab, Tony & Mazzin for their outstanding work throughout training day and game day.
Lastly but not the least I would like to thank all the parents & supporters for their support and
encouragement during the season .

(centre/forward) Has great potential, played different positrons this year. Can be a good foot
baller when focussing on the game. Our leading try scorer.
(centre,5/8)talented player. Unfortunately he suffered a lot of injuries during the season.
(prop) Had a good year in both attacking & defence. Always there to keep us going forward
(centre) His first year playing football, Ramy has a lot of ability to break the defencive line.
He picked up really well.
(full-back/winger) Played up a grade from U15 .He had the right attitude for the game always
tried his best throughout the year.
(half back) Another talented and reliable player. Unfortunately injuries cost him a few games,
his return was a great benefit to the team.

(prop) The best work rated forward for this season. Was always there to keep our forwards
going, his defence was extremely solid .
(full back/second row) Started the season as full-back & later played second rower. Scored
one of our best tries for the season.
(winger/second row) Another U/15 player first season with the boys. Lack of speed in attack
ing but makes up for it with his fancy foot work. Very competitive player.
(centre/second row) Early in the season played in centre & scored a few good tries, as the
season went on, played in second row. His defence was always outstanding.
(winger)He can be more competitive when he's switched on. Loves his football, good to have
had him in the team
(full-back) Joined the team later in the season. A very good full back with a bit more com
mitment to the game & he'll be right.
(second row) New player to the team, did very well during the season in attacking &
defence. Left half way of the season due to injuries.
(second row) A player with a lot of potential to become a good footballer. Needs more
commitment to the team.
(prop) One of our biggest forwards, got enormous potential to be a prop forward.
(winger) One of the smallest players, his defence was a feature with the best technique.
(hooker)His first year. Struggled earlier in the season but improved. Was always there to back
his team mates & his service in playing the ball was outstanding.
(Lock)Became more competitive and providing us with a high work rate in both attack and
defence.
(second row) First season with St Johns. Started the year on the bench, however once given
the opportunity, he became a great team player.
(centre) Was a fine player but due to injuries he only played 5 games in the season. Was
a great loss.

The boys had an interrupted start to the year loosing their coach after 2 games, this is where I
enter. I consider the year to be a successful season for the 18's. We won the minor premiership
by 6 points only losing 2 games all season.
As their coach I am very proud of the achievements this year. There were numerous games when
the boys were down and out but they always seemed to lift a notch and win games that we never
looked like winning.
Due to commitments, injuries and suspensions we lost key players all year and I have no doubt if
we had these boys we would have won the premiership. In saying that the boys done a terrific
job and I am proud of all my players.
I would like to thank my trainers Mark and Andrew, my manager Julie Brown who always did a
wonderful job, the u/16 players who helped throughout the year and George Saab for his help during the semi's. To all the parents who supported their kids and the team throughout the year and
to Mr Paige a special thanks for taping the games throughout the season.

THANK YOU’S
The club would like to thank the following sponsors and our major sponsors advertised throughout the “Where eagles Dare” for their kind and generous donations. Without the help of these
organisations, the club would find it difficult to operate.
We encourage all St Johns people to patronise and use our Sponsors. Let them know that we
appreciate their support and generosity.

Phantom
After holidaying in the far exotic corners of the world the phantom has finally returned home. After clearing customs
early February I then endured to witness not only one of the finest NRL seasons ever, but a very successful season
for the mighty St John's Eagles. After having 12 out of 16 teams qualify for the semi finals, 5 of them continued on
the path to premiership glory. Add the 5 Grand Final victories to the club championships and you have yourself the
finest jewel in the CBJRL crown.
Before I go ahead and tarnish some reputations, I would like to congratulate all the officials and players in the club on
a job well done. Their effort during the year, from what I was told was enormous.
I would like to also send my sincere condolences to all those that left the club chasing glory and power elsewhere. Like
a famous American singer with a liking for wardrobe malfunctions at the Superbowl once sung "don't it always seem to
go….you don't know what you've got till it's gone". Never have truer words been spoken.
The Sportsman's dinner was a stand out this year. Both comedian Mick Meredith, league legend Tommy Roudonikis
and a nice bar tab ensured a great night was had by all. After being picked up at the airport Tommy was taken to the
Punchbowl RSC for a "few drinks" so that he can get familiar with the surroundings for that evening. Anyway about 2
packets of chips, a few winners at the tab and a dozen schooners later Tommy was taken back to his room feeling quiet
merry. The amber fluids consumed that arvo along with the ones later that night left a female member of the club being
asked to accompany the great man back to his room for more "drinks". My guess is that it would have been for some
lessons in winning and dominating the ruck.
One premiership winning coach was that delighted in winning the grand final that he decided to have his own grand
finale to the grand final party. He has been in love for a long time. Was he on his own????
Red faces night opened our eyes to some great non footballing talent. On the other hand there was one performance
that left me scratching my head. A prominent First X111 player tried to entertain the audience with some jokes. His
performance was in the Craig McLaughlin class…..terrible. I am quite glad that the food had been eaten otherwise dim
sims and spring rolls would have been launched onto the stage. From what I have been told he is just as good with
the ladies.
It is half time in a C grade game and the paint was stripped off the walls in the St John's dressing room. Was it from
the spray that Fred Noujaim the coach gave the team??? No…from all reports it was because of one of the trainer's
breath.
Whilst on the C grade a big thank you to Chance Bunce for shutting up one of the biggest mouths in the C grade competition. That flurry will sit in my memory for a long time. Cheers bro!!!
The under 16's players have always been close, so close that two of the players were both caught lying on the tackle
bags in the storage room at Punchbowl Park with their arms around each other talking. Obviously these 2 boys didn't
get enough of the cuddling they had in the front row during the year. One of the boys scored plenty of tries during the
year while the other couldn't score one. Maybe he was just trying to prove that he could score. Personally I would have
gone to Peter Wynn's.
Rumour has it that possibly one of the clubs greatest stalwarts Claude Katter along with some other great serving players could be making a comeback next year with the new vamped A Grade side. Keep your ears to the ground.
It will be a short summer break and before we know it the start of a new season will be upon us. Hope to see you all
back next year for a bigger and better year. Till then enjoy the cricket and the warmer weather. Hope you all have a
Merry Xmas and a safe and enjoyable New Year. Phantom signing off…………
