I am sure that frequently many of us ask ourselves and perhaps ask God, why we are here
on this earth. The answers too often seem to be
very far from our daily activity, and sometimes out of mind for years. Each of us, defined by our genes and faculties, has been
created by God in His Image and Likeness.
God is infinite and we are finite. He has stated
in His own inimitable manner that He desires
us to share in His Divinity, and thus we have
an immortal soul, and in the final analysis, our
bodies which He created, will be with Him in
the Kingdom of Heaven. At every instance He
has shouted out to us that He desires to share
with each of us His Divinity, and in that vein
He offers at every instance of our earthly reality, Grace. We are His creatures, the direct
result of His Love and His Power.
Even if we meditated upon the very essence of
our being “created in His Image and Likeness”
for a lifetime we might never arrive at the
awesome Gift that God has bestowed upon
human beings. It is worth every moment in our
lives to contemplate that we are indeed
“created by God in His Image and Likeness.”
As we read Holy Scripture, and review the
events of mankind itself, do we not see that He
has revealed to us that He desires us to live
and to act and to think, and to share in His
Divinity? Indeed He does! Down through the
centuries He has revealed to humankind how
He desires us to achieve the closeness to Him
and to share in His Divinity.
There have been so many inroads into our
lives that have directly and indirectly, seemingly removed us from that constant reality,
i.e. that we are created in the Image and Likeness of God and that He desires us to be holy,
saintly, loving, and to share in His mighty
Divinity. The number of instances in the many
lives of humans on this earth has graphically
spelled out His Divine concern for our lives
and how we are to grow and advance in our
sharing His Divinity. We see this in the lives
of so many saintly people, and we certainly
see it in the lives of many who have exemplified His Love and Mercy and compassion, i.e.
His Holy Saints, His Martyrs, and yes, His
Mystics. If we would but look very carefully,
we will see these individuals all about us.
These individuals have heard His message,
seen His vision, and they have sacrificed and
offered themselves to the Creator, as indeed
He desires.
It is not that we cannot do the same in our
lives, for He has promised and indeed He supplies the Grace to do so...
