these various synergies and successes with you, and

UMPG A&R - In Action
AS UMPG GROWS, WE REMAIN FOCUSED ON THE DEVELOPMENT OF OUR ARTISTS,
WRITERS AND PRODUCERS. THE FOLLOWING ARE STORIES ABOUT OUR ARTISTS AND
WRITERS AND HOW OUR CREATIVE DEPARTMENTS ACTIVELY FOSTER TALENT.
NASHVILLE (U.S.A.) -
TROY VERGES
Troy Verges started as a college intern
working for UMPG Nashville’s Pat
Higdon. As an eager, aspiring young
songwriter, Verges grew immensely
from interaction with staff at the company and with other songwriters, such
Pat Higdon (left)
and Troy Verges
as Matraca Berg and Gary Harrison.
After several years of focusing, Troy
has emerged as one of UMPG Nashville’s greatest success stories. Having
just had his first No. 1 Country single with Jessica Andrews, Verges has
also written TRISHA YEARWOOD’s single, “I Would’ve Loved You Anyway,”
and has songs on MARTINA MCBRIDE’s Greatest Hits package and new
studio album. He is currently working on more songs for TIM MCGRAW,
PAM TILLIS, and FAITH HILL and has been working with pop hitmaker and
UMPG writer ERIC FOSTER WHITE (Britney Spears, Whitney Houston, A1)
on songs for new Sony Latin/pop group MOVITA.
LONDON (U.K.) -
POPSTARS/HEAR SAY & WRITER TIM HAWKES
When the U.K.’s biggest TV series, POPSTARS,
needed material for their newly formed pop
group, HEAR SAY, Jamie Campbell, UMPG UK
Professional Manager, and Willi Morrison, Senior
Creative Manager, secured five songs on the
group’s self-titled debut album, which has gone
double platinum. Pitched by Campbell, Hear
Say’s No. 1 single, “Pure & Simple” (co-written
by UMPG UK writer, Tim Hawkes), has sold over 2 million copies, which is
no surprise, as the POPSTARS television series has more than 10 million
viewers.
LOS ANGELES (U.S.A.) -

PARIS (France) -
MATT
In March, 1998, UMPG France’s A&R Manager Charlie Idounda signed R&B writer/artist Matt (MCA) prior
to release of his first album. Although Matt’s debut CD had lackluster sales and promotion, Idounda was
determined to find the right niche for Matt’s talent in order to gain credibility for him in the marketplace.
Soon, Matt’s duet with rap singer DEF BOND generated a hugely successful French single and sold more
than 250,000 copies. The exposure propelled his second album, R&B 2 Rue (Barclay), which was released
in March 2001. The Top 10 album has sold more than 100,000 copies.
STOCKHOLM (SWEDEN) - CAMILLA BRINK
UMPG Sweden A&R manager, Carl Linder, found artist/songwriter CAMILLA BRINCK and helped to negotiate her recording deal with Virgin Records Sweden. Brink’s album will be released later this summer.

Ding
Fei Fei Ding, a new singer-songwriter from Shanghai, was recently signed to UMP/UMI Hong Kong as
an exclusive writer. UMPG’s Asian territories worked hard along with Universal’s label to promote Ding
in Asia and abroad. Her latest single, “Forgotten Moon (Way Out West Mix),” debuted on the UK indie
chart at No. 48. It is a great success to have a UK chart entry for an Asian artist. This summer her
single will also be included in a major dance compilation album with other international recordings in
Asia. UMPG Hong Kong also signed Maggie Fu, a composer and author. Working together with her
management company, UMPG successfully assisted in landing a recording deal for her in Taiwan. Her
debut album will soon be released in Asia.

Q&A
FOCUS ON
LATIN AMERICA
with IVAN ALVAREZ
Ivan Alvarez is UMPG’s Senior Vice President of
Latin America and also First Vice President of FLADEM, the regional publisher’s association.
Ivan Alvarez
Senior VP
Latin America
Q) Can you desscrribe some of the keyy issuess FLADEM is trying
to addrresss? A) FLADEM is involved in numerous issues throughout the region.
Whether it be misdirection of payments in Peru or inequitable distributions in
Chile, something is always going on in every territory. Right now, the issue that
interests me most is the faltering negotiation between publishers and record
labels in Brazil. After an extended period of time, they have failed to agree on a
new statutory rate. This discord is not good for either side and we are working
to provide regional support on the issue to aid in a speedy resolution.
Q) Can you give us an upda
ate on how thingss are progrresssing witth SACM in
Mexico? A) SACM has progressed quite well lately. We have received our first
distributions after a long and arduous six-year battle between music publishers
and the Mexican Society SACM. But we are now faced with the realities of a
huge backlog of unregistered titles. UMPG has taken the initiative and provided SACM with CD-Roms of our titles to ensure quick and proper registration of
all of our catalogs, including the former MCA, PolyGram and Rondor catalogs.
Q) Have all the lega
al dissputtess witth SACM been ressolved? A) We have resolved
the dispute regarding held performance monies. Now we are discussing the
details of who collects on mechanicals for catalog originating in BIEM territories,
e.g., SGAE. Clearly, there are overlapping claims, so this is not a clear cut issue.
Q) Is the moneyy flowing? A) We received the first payment in February and do
not expect any problems in the future. But vigilance is certainly part of our way
of doing business in Latin America.
Q) Can you tell us aboutt the manyy concerrnss publissherrs have rega
arding
La
atina
auttorr and variouss inittia
ativess by SGAE in the region? A) Representing societies in Latin America and Spain, Latinautor is a unified body comprised of representatives of the Ibero-American societies that has designed a centralized
database to simplify the registration of copyright in each individual society. The
concern is that Latinautor is interested in collecting income streams traditionally handled directly by publishers. Considering the relative inefficiency of societies in areas where they already represent us, we are understandably cautious
in extending the relationship. We are getting to know this entity and trying to
determine how it will fit into the present way of doing business. At the same time,
publishers have improved their methods of registration and collection and
UMPG is at the head of the pack with its centralized database and electronic
registration system.
Q) Argenttina
a was recenttlyy hitt hard by difficultt economic condittionss. How has
thiss affectted the publisshing bussinesss in tha
at terrrittorry? A) Our publishing company has been growing aggressively due to more efficient administration and
aggressive creative activity. But unfortunately, the efforts have been mitigated
by the shrinking Argentina market. Our staff in Argentina, and in all of the Latin
region, has been instructed to act locally and think globally. The surest way to
protect a territory from economic instability is to increase its local roster and foreign activity. An Argentine hit in the US or another major territory will go a long
way to put our budget back on track.
Q) Wha
at otherr societtiess are pressentting the mosst cha
allenging issuess in the Latin
region? A) As the region is still developing in many ways, societies are in varying degrees of development and new issues continuously arise. There is a
chasm between the way Europe handles publishing income and the way the US
looks and behaves. Latin America has been influenced by both and sometimes
it is not clear which is the correct path. It is our duty to assist the societies in
their development to establish policies that will improve the efficiency of the
industry and not hinder it. An example of this is the resolution we recently
arrived at with SCD in Chile. We presented our case to their board and they were
quite amenable to our position. When faced with the reality that their present
distribution system did not accurately reflect the use of music today in Chile,
they agreed to phase in a more equitable distribution scheme. This distribution
scheme will result in better treatment of international copyrights and a stronger
relationship between the society and the publishers.
