More than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year. As part of National Small Business Week, the U.S. Small Business Administration takes the opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others from all 50 states and U.S. territories. Every day, they’re working to grow small businesses, create 21st century jobs, drive innovation, and increase America’s global competitiveness. - source: SBA.GOV Shop Small | Shop Local | Do Business with a Fellow Chamber Member National Small Business Week is an opportunity to honor and recognize our small businesses and entrepreneurs. Greater Zephyrhills Chamber of Commerce ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT | GOVERNMENT AFFAIRS Position Zephyrhills as the preferred place to do business in East Pasco New Mayor, Gene Whitfield and City Councilman Alan Knight were sworn in on April 7th at the City Council meeting. FSBDCN State Office: April is National Financial Literacy Month, the perfect opportunity for individuals and business owners alike to get their house in order—financially speaking. In honor of the month, Dr. Cheryl Kirby, associate state director of marketing and professional development for the Florida SBDC Network, recently sat down with Earl Young, executive vice president and senior lending officer of Florida Traditions Bank, to discuss the importance of financial literacy and to glean insight on commercial lending. Young has more than 40 years of commercial lending experience and serves as a member of the Florida SBDC Network's State Advisory Board. "Financial literacy, as with all education, is critical to the future of our nation if we are to continue as a free capitalist society," said Young. "Sounds serious, but it's not an overstatement. No financial independence—no independence." As with financial education, the availability of capital is crucial for small business survival and growth. Young details that banks and other lenders want to lend money—they cannot make a profit if they don't make loans. However, bad loans can quickly put any lender out of business. "Bankers say that you have to have skin in the game before they are going to put their money in your business," he adds. "Your personal credit will play an important part in any lender's decision. If you have a credit problem, when you're able, stop and fix it. Poor planning and lack of financial understanding, along with too fast of growth, can quickly kill a company if not understood and planned for." Young also discussed the importance of a well-planned, realistic business plan. "Before the advent of professionally adhering organizations like the FSBDC who can help bring all these things together for a small business owner, as a lender, when I received a business plan I always would automatically cut the projected revenues in half and keep the expenses the same. Entrepreneurs are dreamers—and they need to be—bankers need to be more realistic and meet in the middle somewhere." US Representative Gus Bilirakis Held a Question & Answer Meet & Greet with East Pasco chambers of commerce and many business and community leaders April 23rd at the Hampton Inn in Dade City Photo courtesy of Richard K. Riley . Partnership in Training For the first time in Pasco County history, the Supervisor of Elections' office partnered with the Tax Collector's office to provide training to all staff that provides voter registration services through the Tax Collector's office. Beginning with the National Voter Registration Act of 1993, commonly known as Motor Voter, which mandated simultaneous application for driver license and voter registration, registering voters has been a function of the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) now Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (DHSMV). When the county's DMV offices were absorbed in 2002 by former Tax Collector Mike Olson, taking voter registration applications became an official function of the county tax collector's office. Mike Fasano, Tax Collector, welcomed the partnership in order to achieve a higher level of service to Pasco County residents and because the DMV plays a huge role in the voter registration process. At its highest point in 2009 over 89% of voters who made application did so through the DMV. From the tax collector's office, the application information is transmitted to the Department of State and then to the supervisor's office for finalization of the application process. With the goal of making voter registration a seamless operation between our agencies, a series of classes was provided countywide for all tax collector's office customer services representatives. The training reviewed the compliance requirements of the motor voter law as it applies to DMV staff, included an overview of the role of the Supervisor of Elections' office, and shared information that helped to create an awareness of each other's roles in the responsibility that comes with registering people to vote. This unusual partnership of constitutional offices as a result of federal law requires the utmost cooperation and professionalism between agencies. There is no doubt that our mutual constituents will receive an even higher level of service now that this training is complete. . Important Dates You Need to Know Bookclosing Dates Primary - July 28, 2014 General - October 6, 2014 Important Information What is Bookclosing? With the 2014 Election cycle just around the corner, • Deadline to register if a first-time voter in the state of Florida. • Deadline to change party affiliation. Party MAY NOT be changed at the polls. Check your information card to confirm your party, or call the elections’ office. Pursuant to Florida Statutes 101.021, Florida is a closed primary state. Voters vote their r egister ed party in the primaries I’d like to offer a few last minute reminders to Pasco County voters. In order to make your voting experience a pleasant and smooth process there are a few things you as a voter can do to prepare: Election Day Primary - August 26, 2014 General - November 4, 2014 • If you have not voted since the last gubernatorial election, you should check your voter registration status on-line, pascovotes.com, or call our office 1800-851-8754. Do not wait until election day to find out if you are registered and if your registration is in good standing! • You are statutorily required to show photo and signature ID at the polls, or you will be required to vote a provisional ballot. Your driver license or Florida ID card meet this requirement, but there are other acceptable forms of identification. See pascovotes.com for a list of these. • In addition to voting at the polls there are the options of voting early (visit pascovotes.com for sites, days, times and wait times at each location) or request a vote-by-mail ballot. Call, write, or email the elections’ office at least six (6) days prior to the election. Order early to allow time to receive your ballot and return it by mail. To Help You Prepare • It will be important to utilize the sample ballot to help expedite voting at the polls. Mark your sample ballot and take it with you so you can copy your choices onto your official ballot. • Voter registration address changes can be done by telephone or on-line, but failure to update your address prior to Election Day could result in delays at the polls. • Due to changing circumstances, some polling locations have changed. All voters are sent new voter information cards when their polling locations change, or when they move, but if you have not maintained a current address with my office, you may not have received this information. A complete list of polling locations is available online, pascovotes.com, or by calling 1-800-851-8754. With plenty of advanced notice, proper preparation and three available voting options, there should be no reason to forgo one of the greatest freedoms aff orded to all Americans. If there is anything my staff and I can do to make your voting experience trou- Pasco County Sherriff, Chris Nocco May Newsletter I would like to invite the public to attend the Pasco Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Service which will take place at 8 a.m. on Friday, May 2, 2014. The ceremony will be held on the north lawn of the Historic Courthouse, located at 37918 Meridian Avenue in Dade City. Please note that this year’s ceremony has changed to a morning event, instead of the evening, as in years past. Several agencies will be represented at the ceremony, which will honor law enforcement officers killed in Pasco County in the line of duty. The first such tragedy happened more than a century ago. The most recent was Hernando County Sheriff’s Office Dep. John Mecklenburg, 35, who was killed in Pasco on July 3, 2011, after crashing his patrol car on U.S. Highway 41 during a vehicle pursuit. Additional officers who will be honored include: Lieutenant Charles Bo Harrison, 56 Pasco Sheriff's Office End of Watch: Sunday, June 1, 2003 Constable Arthur Fleece Crenshaw, 31 Pasco County Constable End of Watch: Wednesday, October 4, 1922 Trooper James Bradford-Jean Crooks, 23 Florida Highway Patrol End of Watch: Tuesday, May 19, 1998 Prohibition Agent John Van Waters, 46 United States Department of Justice – Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives Deputy Sheriff John Herbert McCabe, 24 Pasco Sheriff's Office End of Watch: Saturday, June 26, 1948 Deputy Sheldon S. The Tampa Bay area has seen too many law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty recently, so it is always with a heavy heart that we pay tribute. I hope to see you at the ceremony.
