Mother’s Day Roses This Weekend
On this Mother’s Day weekend, roses are being offered to celebrate life
by celebrating mothers. Your donation of $3 for one rose or $5 for two
will be transformed into life-affirming support for people in need of
food, counseling, diapers, cribs and much more. Honor the special
women in your life and give other women hope for the future. Your
generous donation helps support women choosing life for their unborn
child. Vases will be available on the Blessed Mother’s altar for those who would
like to leave roses in her honor.
Sacrament of Confirmation Next Sunday
Next Sunday, May 15th, is the Solemnity of Pentecost — the day on
which the Universal Church celebrates the coming of the Holy Spirit by
which the mission of the Church began.
We will have a special reason to celebrate the Gift of the Holy Spirit here at the Cathedral Parish as Bishop Morlino will confirm sixteen of
our young people at the 11:00 Mass. The Sacrament of Confirmation is
mostly celebrated regionally, with several parishes taking part. We have
the special privilege of having Confirmation just for our young people —
and on Pentecost no less! The 11:00 Mass will be somewhat more crowded than usual, but with only 16 candidates, regular attenders should not
be afraid to come for this special celebration. Cake and punch to congratulate our newly confirmed young people will be included in the parish brunch next Sunday.
Parish Brunch Next Sunday
The bi-monthly Parish Brunch will take place after the 11:00 a.m. next
Sunday, May 15th. All parishioners, guests and visitors are invited to
the parish hall after Mass for food and fellowship. Donations to help
defray the cost are greatly appreciated.
Those new to the parish or as yet unregistered are especially invited
to visit the Welcome Table in the narthex and then to stay for brunch if
able.

was discussing a very serious gap between the regular offertory income the
parish was receiving and the amount
needed to meet parish expenses. The
consensus of the council was that the
urgency of the need had to be made
clear to the whole parish, with a serious
appeal for your generous help to meet
the need. That was the genesis of the
One Faith, One Parish, My Share campaign that was launched last September.

This time last month, I held off publishing the March 2016 results (and
the comparison to March 2015) because Easter fell in March this year,
whereas it had been in April 2015. The March 2016 collections were up
very sharply versus March 2015 – but I thought that was caused mostly
by Easter being included in the figures for this March. I didn’t want to
publish great figures for March followed by poor performance in April
(which “lost” Easter this year). I reasoned that the fairest way to make
a comparison was to correct for the “moving Easter” effect by comparing March+April 2016 to March+April 2015.
Well . . . those figures are now available, and here they are:

Since the campaign began, the monthly collections have been published
in the bulletin, with a comparison of the month just ended to the same
month in the prior year. The results thus far have been very encouraging. Since September 2015, our parish offertory income has been up
consistently over the prior year – from just over 7% to almost 25% in
various months (averaging an increase of 16%).

Words cannot adequately express my gratitude for this outstanding
result! While our parish income is such that one-time contributions can
skew these numbers somewhat, it is clear that many people in the parish have responded very generously to help the parish toward a balanced budget.
At our Parish Finance Council meeting last month, we discussed the
importance of an annual review of the parish’s financial situation, and a
renewed appeal for support. This September, the promotion of regular
giving by electronic fund transfer or credit card will be a special focus
of the campaign.

National Combined Collection Next Weekend
Next weekend, May 14-15, the National Combined Collection will be
conducted in parishes throughout our diocese. This collection combines

Wedding Anniversary Celebration
What anniversary are you celebrating in 2016? Bishop Robert Morlino
will be recognizing married couples celebrating 50, 55, 60 or more years
of marriage, as well as newlyweds celebrating their first three years on
Sunday, August 14th, at St. Francis Xavier Parish in Cross Plains. The
event will start at 2:00 pm with a Mass of Thanksgiving followed by a
cake, coffee, and punch reception.
This is an invitation only event! Please notify our parish office by
May 10th that you will be celebrating your Special Anniversary in the
calendar year of 2016 and your name will be submitted to the Bishop’s
office.
Feast of Corpus Christi
The last Sunday of this month will be the Feast of Corpus Christi — the
Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ. In many years, we have a
Corpus Christi procession that travels from St. Patrick Church to Holy
Redeemer Church via the State Capitol, involving both English– and
Spanish-speaking parishioners who have attended 11:00 Masses at our
two churches.
Unfortunately, this year Corpus Christi falls on Memorial Day weekend, and a series of races (half-marathon, etc.) will close the Capitol
Square all day. We will have a procession within St Patrick Church at
the conclusion of the 11:00 Mass. There will be a procession around the
block at Holy Redeemer at the conclusion of the 11:00 Mass in Spanish
there. We hope to be able to have the grand, joint procession again in
2017.

Venite Adoremus This Friday, May 13th
Come out for a Holy Hour with other young adults from around the Diocese of Madison on Friday, May 13th, 7:00 pm at St. Dennis Church, 505
Dempsey Road, Madison. The evening includes Eucharistic Adoration,
Reconciliation, and a meditation given by a Fr. Randy Timmerman. After
the event, we gather for socializing at a local establishment. This is a
great way to meet friends and deepen your faith!
Theology on Tap
Join us for our next TOT on Thursday, May 26th, 7 pm at the Brink
Lounge, when Fr. Mark Miller will present on Why Christianity? A Catholic Looks at Islam. This is the fourth in a series of TOT talks in which we
will dialogue with other religious traditions and perspective. Each “Why
Christianity?” talk will seek to identify similarities and differences between Catholicism and another religious perspective. The goal is to understand better and appreciate what others are saying while also growing in our appreciation of the richness of our faith in Jesus Christ. Fr.
Mark Miller studied theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy
Cross, and Ecumenism and Interreligious Dialogue at the Pontifical University of St. Paul.
Theology on Tap is a monthly speaker series where 20s & 30s are
invited to join us for engaging talks by some of the leading thinkers,
speakers, educators, innovators, and activists in the nation as they share
their insights on various contemporary issues facing young adults today.

We have a brunch for young adults (in their 20s and 30s) after the 11:00
am Mass at St. Patrick on the first Sunday of each month.

 FAITH FORMATION 
Catholicism 101
We offer a 3-session overview of the Catholic Faith for adults at St. Patrick Church that occurs every other month. The series is intended especially for (1) those seeking a basic introduction to Christianity and/or the
Catholic Church, (2) parents with a child to be baptized, and (3) couples
preparing to be married in the Church. Session I will next be offered
Tuesday, June 28, with sessions II and III on the following two Tuesday
evenings. Sessions begin at 6:30 pm.

 AÑO DE LA MISERICORDIA 
Maria, Mujer y Madre
Al hablar de María, la madre de Jesús, la mayoría de nosotros piensa enseguida en alguna imagen de su devoción, a menudo aquella que nos inculcaron desde la infancia o que vimos encumbrada
en los altares de los templos: la Virgen de Guadalupe, la Virgen de Fátima o de Lourdes, la Candelaria, etc., y junto con esa imagen encumbrada
hasta los cielos, pensamos en sus cualidades más
sublimes de santidad, bondad, ternura; preservada sin mancha del pecado original…
¿Pero qué sucede cuando hablamos de María
como mujer y madre? ¿Cuál es la imagen que viene a nuestra mente? Evidentemente era una mujer
de carne y hueso, y como tal, pasó por penas y alegrías, triunfos y fracasos; aprendió de su hijo y lo
siguió hasta la muerte. Esa imagen más humana es
posible construirla a partir de los textos de los
evangelios, que nos aportan algunos datos valiosos de su persona. De ahí
sabemos que María perteneció al pueblo judío, una nación pequeña y en
aquel tiempo oprimida por el poder del Imperio romano (Lc 2,1-7). La región en la que vivía (Galilea) era despreciada por los habitantes de la capital, Jerusalén (Jn 7,52). En pocas palabras, era una muchachita de un pueblo
marginado, que aceptó ser la madre de Jesús aun antes de estar formalmente casada con José, su prometido; arriesgándose a ser criticada (Mt 1,18) y
hasta condenada a muerte (Mt 1,19).
María fue una mujer que supo amar, y tuvo la suerte de tener a su lado
a un hombre que la amaba ante los ojos de Dios y la respetaba; que creyó y
confió en ella, incluso cuando todo el pueblo murmuraba (Mt 1,24-25); la
defendió y protegió en todo momento (Mt 2,14). María se enamoró del
carpintero y él se enamoró de ella. Era un amor puro, filial, profundo en la
Voluntad de Dios. Y aun cuando al nacer Jesús, no tenían nada que ofrecerle, más que los cuidados de su amor, un establo y un pesebre fueron
suficientes para recibir al Hijo de Dios (Lc 2,7-19).
Fue una madre que enfrentó la incertidumbre del anuncio del anciano
Simeón en el templo: “Y a ti una espada te atravesará el alma” (Lc 2,35).
Soportó las críticas contra su Hijo, cuando decían que era un ignorante (Jn
7,15); y no creían en él sólo porque era “el hijo del carpintero” (Mc 6,39); o
cuando decían que era “un borracho y un comilón, amigo de publicanos y
pecadores” (Lc 7,34). Y aprendió ella misma, como su discípula, y también
asumió ese nuevo parentesco de los que cumplen la Voluntad de Dios y
ponen en práctica Su Palabra (Mc 3,31-35).
Fue una mujer valiente que soportó el dolor y la pena, para no abandonar a su Hijo condenado a la vergonzosa muerte de cruz, cuando todos
sus discípulos lo habían abandonado (Jn 19,25). Y aceptó la responsabilidad de velar por todos, cuando su Hijo se lo pidió estando clavado en la
cruz: “Mujer, ahí tienes a tu hijo”. Luego dijo al discípulo: “Ahí tienes a tu
madre” (Jn 19,27).
Así pues, María es sin duda inmaculada y santa, madre del Señor y madre nuestra, merecedora de las virtudes más sublimes; pero no olvidemos
que también fue una persona de carne y hueso, que supo amar; que sufrió
y luchó como mujer y madre, para que los planes de salvación de Dios,
pudieran realizarse en beneficio de toda la humanidad.

Y hoy domingo, Día de la Madre, hemos visto que María sigue estando cerca de nosotros porque es nuestra madre, y al igual que Jesús, esta
viva. Y tener una madre es tan importante que hasta Dios quiso tener
una, es por eso que en este día tan especial, ¿qué pueden las madres ver
y aprender de María? Su obediencia, su confianza, su don de escucha,
su servicialidad, su amor por todos, su piedad, su hábito a la oración y
meditación, su fidelidad, su fortaleza ante la adversidad, y sobretodo,
debemos de aprender a seguir su consejo: “Hagan todo lo que Él
(Jesús) les diga.”
Hoy es un día representativo y muy importante para aquella mujer
(nuestra madre) que ni bien supo que iba ser madre dio todo su amor y
dedicación a su hijo. Dios es sabio e hizo y preparó a la mujer para que
sea madre justamente porque la considera fuerte y sabía y le dio dones
especiales para tener conexión con sus hijos. Por eso bien dicen que ella
es nuestro ángel terrenal puesto por Dios. No hay amor más puro que el
de una madre y es un amor incondicional. Ella vela por nosotros y nos
tiene presente en sus oraciones diarias y su felicidad es la felicidad de
sus hijos. Por eso hoy estas líneas son un poco en comparación a lo que
cada una de ustedes, madres, deben ser de María, nuestra madre en el
Cielo. ¡Feliz Día de la Madre!
Peregrinación de la Misericordia
El próximo domingo, 15 de mayo, el Obispo Morlino, concederá el Sacramento de la Confirmación a dieciséis jóvenes de la parroquia en la
Misa de las 11:00 am en la Iglesia de San Patrick.
En el Año de la Misericordia, una de las condiciones para recibir las indulgencias plenarias es una pequeña peregrinación. Nosotros,
tendremos la Peregrinación de la Misericordia
el sábado 4 de junio. Confesiones para la peregrinación serán el martes 31 de mayo.
Esta peregrinación, permite que los peregrinos puedan recibir INDULGENCIA PLENARIA (de todas tus culpas). Pero, ¿qué es
la Indulgencia Plenaria? Es una gracia que
Dios nos da al cumplir los requisitos que la
Iglesia pide, y de esa manera es como si estuviéramos recién bautizados, con el alma totalmente limpia de culpa.
A partir de la indulgencia todas las manchas que tenía tu alma desaparecerán.
¡Borrón y cuenta nueva! Recordemos que
esto solo es posible porque la MISERICORDIA de Dios y Su AMOR hacia nosotros es
infinito y no porque nos la ganemos por
nuestros méritos.
Para ganar una indulgencia plenaria, además de querer evitar cualquier pecado mortal o venial, se necesita:
1.- Confesión sacramental: La confesión puede hacerse el mismo día que se quiere ganar
la indulgencia o haberla hecho recientemente, no más de una semana antes.
2.- Comunión Eucarística: Recibirla el mismo
día en que quiera ganarse la indulgencia.
3.- Oración por las intenciones del Papa: Se
Debe rezar un Padre Nuestro, una Ave María
y un Gloria, y ofrecerlas por las intenciones
del Papa.
4. Pasar por la Puerta de la Misericordia.

Confirmaciones el Próximo Domingo
Separe la fecha para nuestra Procesión Eucarística Anual el domingo 29
de mayo. La procesión comienza al terminar la Misa de las 11:00 am,
saliendo de Holy Redeemer iremos alrededor de la cuadra en oración y
adoración a nuestro Rey y Señor. Posteriormente regresaremos a la iglesia para la Bendición.
Primeras Comuniones
Quienes recibieron la Primera Comunión este año, deben participar y
acudir en su ropa de Primera Comunión para ocupar un lugar de honor
en la procesión.
Confesiones
No habrán confesiones en español las siguientes fechas:
Martes 10 y 17 — Sábados 7 y 14 — Domingos 9 y 10
Las confesiones se reanudan en horario normal el sábado 21. Gracias
por su comprensión.
El próximo fin de semana, 14-15 de mayo, todas las parroquias de la diócesis tendrán una
Colecta Nacional Combinada (National Combined Collection). Sobres especiales están en
su paquete de sobres. Sobres adicionales y folletos informativos describiendo las diferentes
colectas se encuentran en el quiosco. Los cheques pueden ser pagaderos a nombre de Cathedral Parish. El día de la colecta, coloque el
sobre en la canasta de la contribución.
