16T H SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ August 19
16TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ August 19, 2015 MADISON’S DOWNTOWN CATHOLIC COMMUNITY ABOUT OUR PARISH The Cathedral Parish of St. Raphael was formed on July 1, 2008 by the merger of three historic parishes located within a few blocks of the Capitol Square. SAINT PATRICK 404 E. Main St. The buildings of two of those historic parishes – Holy Redeemer and St. Patrick – provide the current facilities for the Cathedral Parish. Mass is offered every day in both churches. The parish rectory is at the Holy Redeemer site, while the offices are at the St. Patrick location. HOLY REDEEMER 120 W. Johnson St. Old St. Raphael Cathedral was destroyed by arson in 2005. Bishop Morlino has announced his intention to erect a new cathedral on the same site (at West Main and Fairchild). In the meantime, an outdoor Way of the Cross is located there. www.isthmuscatholic.org CATHEDRAL PLACE W. Unfortunately, the brunch will not be held this Sunday, July 19th. Please look for our next Parish Brunch in September. Marriage Enrichment Series—REFOCCUS Next Saturday, July 25th, 5:45 pm—8:00 pm at St. Patrick Church hall Are you looking for a way to strengthen your marriage? Join us for ‘REFOCCUS’! Couples gather for prayer, to hear a reflection from a married couple, and for time for each couple to ‘REFOCCUS’ their marriage using resources that facilitate dialogue about relationship issues. The final meeting of this 5-session series will be on August 29th. It ‘s not necessary for couples to attend all sessions. The $15 per couple fee covers up to five sessions. To register, please visit registration.madisondiocese.org/mm/ or for more information, please contact Marc Laudonio at 257-5000 or [email protected]. Cheer on Team Cathedral Next Sunday The Capitol Mile takes place next Sunday, July 26th. Please join us to help us cheer on our team. Check-in takes place on the Capitol lawn between West Washington and State Street between 1:30–2:30 pm. Races begin at 3:00 pm and conclude at 5:00. Parking, Parking, Parking Holy Redeemer The gates are now in operation. The most important point to remember is this: When coming for Mass, entrance to the lot is from Gorham Street and exit only toward Johnson Street. At least half an hour before Masses and 15 minutes before confessions, the Gorham Street gate will open to allow anyone coming to church to park. The exit gate to Johnson Street will open to allow exit any time a car pulls up to it from the larger part of the lot. Those entering from Johnson Street will not be able to get into the main lot at any time. Only the parking spaces between the church and Lumen House will be accessible from Johnson Street—for those coming for Adoration, those coming for an appointment at the rectory, or anyone needing to visit the church. St. Patrick The parking lot, one block east of St. Patrick Church between Franklin and Blair Streets is available for all church events. The lot of the Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce building (enter from Franklin Street) is available for your use on evenings and weekends. Meters are not enforced on Sunday (though they are Saturday until 6:00 pm). Parishioners should not presume they may park in the church lot when coming downtown for other activities. On many Wednesday nights during the summer, parking is very scarce on account of Concerts on the Square, and we need the parking lot for parish events. Unauthorized vehicles in the church lot risk being ticketed and towed. Page 3 Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 19, 2015 FROM THE RECTOR Dear Friends in Christ: Most Catholics are familiar with the idea of papal infallibility. Wellinstructed Catholics are aware of the requirements for infallible teaching: the pope must speak ex cathedra (“from the chair,” that is, intending to teach with the authority of Peter), he must teach in continuity with the deposit of the Faith, on a matter of faith or morals. Infallibility doesn’t mean that the pope never makes a mistake. But for the last hundred and fifty years or so, infallibility has been exercised by popes who have also been shaped by the Italian sense of bella figura. What is bella figura? Literally, “beautiful figure” – it’s the desire to make the best possible impression in all things. Although a typically Italian trait, it has certainly influenced the life of the Catholic Church beyond those of Italian nationality – including our last two popes. MASS SCHEDULE Monday, July 20 – St. Apollinaris 12:10 pm at St. Patrick Special Intention: Deborah G. 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer † Warren Schroeckenthaler Tuesday, July 21 – St. Lawrence of Brindisi 12:10 pm at St. Patrick † Gene Buechner 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer Special Intention: Eldon Wiederholt Wednesday, July 22 – St. Mary Magdalene 12:10 pm at St. Patrick † Rosemary Kelley 5:15 pm at Holy Redeemer † Hubert Ganser Thursday, July 23 – St. Bridget 12:10 pm at St. Patrick Special Intention: Dalton Moss Appreciating bella figura, popes have traditionally tried to teach as carefully as possible – being precise, balanced, and nuanced in what they have said; building in clarifications lest their words be misunderstood. Those popes have well understood that they were not always teaching infallibly, but they wanted each statement to be as precise and reliable as possible – for the honor of the Church and of their office (that’s the bella figura part), as well as for the sake of the faithful. This good habit has sometimes led Catholics to expect more than infallibility really guarantees. Pope Benedict tried to help us avoid this error, I think, when he said in July 2005, “The pope is not an oracle; he is infallible in very rare situations.” Shortly thereafter, when he published his book Jesus of Nazareth, he stated clearly that it was not intended to be authoritative teaching and would welcome disputations about it. All well and good. Infallibility is limited – the popes knew it, and we should too. But Pope Francis is reminding us of this fact in very vivid ways to which we are not really accustomed. I am thinking of comments he made while returning from his recent trip to South America. When challenged about why he speaks so much about the poor and relatively little about the middle class, Pope Francis said, “It’s an error of mine not to think about this . . . You’re telling me about something I need to do.” When asked about whether some of his statements might be exploited for political purposes, he admitted that anything can be taken out of context and commented: “If I make a mistake, with a bit of shame I ask forgiveness and go forward.” In statements like these, we see the spontaneity, candor and humility that have helped endear Pope Francis to the world. But it’s not the bella figura way of being pope to which we are accustomed. Msgr. Kevin D. CONFESSIONS FROM OUR NEIGHBORS Vespers at the Cistercian Monastery This Sunday The Church is currently observing a Year for Consecrated Life. In union with this celebration, the Cistercian Nuns at Valley of Our Lady Monastery in Prairie du Sac invite you to join their community for Solemn Vespers and Benediction this Sunday, July 19th. Vespers begin at 4:30 pm in the monastery chapel. These Cistercians of the Common Observance (O.S.C.O.) lead a very contemplative, cloistered life. They principally use Latin for daily Mass and the chanting of the Divine Office. To support themselves they make the altar breads used in almost all the parishes of the Diocese of Madison and many far beyond it. The community has been blessed with many vocations. The monastery is located just off U. S. Highway 12. The address is E11096 Yanke Dr., Prairie du Sac, Wisconsin. Concert by Angelus July 21st A Concert of Sacred Music for Women’s Voices by Angelus will be presented at the Bishop O’Connor Catholic Pastoral Center on Tuesday, July 21st, 7:00 pm. No sacaron nada.
