Quite frequently, we find ourselves at a traffic light, next to a homeless man or woman standing on the corner. Have you been in this situation before? You may feel compelled to help, and wish there was something you can do. Maybe you’re not comfortable handing them money, but you feel guilty not doing something… There are many ways you can participate. You can purchase items to donate for the bags, help on Saturday, March 28 at 9:00 a.m. to assemble bags, keep bags on hand to pass out or pray for this mission that those needing them will be reached. Items for bags: toothbrush and toothpaste, tissues, antibacterial wipes, bandages, juice box or water bottle, peanuts, granola bar, crackers and cheese, a gospel pamphlet, socks, deodorant, mouthwash, and comb. To get involved, contact Julia Benfield at [email protected] or 704-678-4487. Volume 10, Issue 1 Page 5 Sunday, March 8: Seniors leading in worship including Joy Choir. Monday, March 9: The Jubilant Seniors will depart from the church at 10:50 a.m. to John’s Restaurant in Charlotte for lunch. Call Frances at 704-900-5775 or one of the other Jubilant Team members to get your name on the list. You will be responsible for your own lunch. Dr. Cameron will be our speaker following lunch. Deadline is Sunday, March 1 at 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 10: The Joy Choir will be singing at a Nursing Home. Watch for details. Wednesday, March 11: Attend regular evening activities . For the remainder of the week The Jubilant Senior Team would like to encourage seniors to send or give some TLC by a visit, call or card to any senior member of our church that is sick, in the hospital, homebound, or in a nursing facility. This will let them know we are thinking about them and praying for them. Seniors, let’s do everything we can to make Senior Week valuable and up lifting to many people! Blessings to all! Listed below are many opportunities to let our minds and hearts shine for Him during Senior Week. The Messenger Page 6 Dear Church Family, Mac and I thank you for cards, flowers, visits, delicious meals, and especially for your thoughts and prayers during my hospital stay and recovery time as I continue to heal. Your support touched my heart and we feel blessed to be a part of such a loving church family. Love in Christ, Linda Richardson Church, I want to thank my wonderful church family for the love and support shown to me and my family during the two and a half years of Charlie’s illness and death. All the visits, calls, cards, food, and prayers encouraged and strengthened us so much. A special thanks to those who assisted with his service and those who prepared and served lunch for our family the day of Charlie’s funeral. Thank you all. Frances Black & Family 2015 Peru Mission Trip Update V{âÜv{ _|yx As most everyone has probably heard by now, FBC will be sending a mission team to Peru in July 2015! I wanted to take this opportunity to give you a little more information on our upcoming trip. We will be leaving Mount Holly on July 4 and flying to Lima, Peru. From there we will fly to Cusco, Peru and then take a short bus trip to the town of Urubamba where the Scripture Union boys home is located. We will spend the week interacting with the approximately 30 boys who reside in the home as well as performing whatever home improvement/construction projects that are needed. We will fly back to Lima on Friday, July 10 and take an overnight flight home, arriving Saturday July 11. The 2015 Peru Mission Team has 10 members: Nathan Benfield, Carrie Haverty, Joe Haverty, Lakena Marsh, Savannah Piercy, Collier Poole, Alicia Robinson, Neil Robinson, Amy Smith and myself. In January, the team had the opportunity to meet Kate and Billy Greenman our Scripture Union contacts in person! They were in our area while on a 6 month furlough. It was great for our team to be able to ask questions and get to know Kate and Billy and how they started with Scripture Union. They both were part of a mission team much like ours when they were 15 years old. From that first trip, their love of the Scripture Union boys grew and developed into a calling to become full time missionaries in Peru! Kate is the coordinator for mission groups traveling to Peru from all over the world, while Billy is more specifically involved with the 7 boys homes and the house parents and staff who run them. Kate and Billy developed a personal relationship while working with Scripture Union and got married in Peru! We are currently in the process of trying to raise the approximately $23,000 needed to fund our trip. We have made good progress so far, but have a long way to go. Everyone on the team is so thankful for the generosity of our church family! Without your support, both through prayer and through giving, we would be unable to continue this important mission. We are also planning a few fundraisers in the coming months so be on the lookout for details to follow. I will place a bulletin board in the Gathering Place with updated information and our fundraising progress to keep everyone up-to-date as we continue this journey. As always, if you have any questions about the trip or the Scripture Union program, feel free to ask! I’m sure any of the current or past team members would love to share what they know. Also, Kate and Billy have a blog where they share information about the program (www.12degreessouth.com). If you would like to see how the boys in Cusco celebrated Christmas, check out the January 5, 2015 post (http://www.12degreessouth.com/2015/01/christmas-in-thesacred-valley/). Janet Smith Volume 9, Issue 11 Page 7 Lectio Divina… Read the Bible as though it were something entirely unfamiliar, as though it had not been set before you ready made… Face the book with a new attitude as something new… Read aloud the words written in the book in front of you, hear the word you utter, and let it reach you. -- Martin Buber In church history, we usually describe two different ways to approach the Scriptures: Sacra pagina and Lectio Divina. Sacra pagina, the sacred pages, is what we most often do for Bible study, sermons and Sunday school. It is the process of breaking the Scriptures into its constituent parts – what we preachers call exegesis of the text. This is where we consider issues like the author’s intention of the text, the meaning in the original Hebrew or Greek, the geographic or historical underpinnings of the text, or the style of the text. On the other hand, Lectio Divina, the Divine Reading, is an ancient method of devotionally reading the Scriptures or “praying” the Scriptures. For most of us, we read the Bible a few minutes in a devotional or for our Sunday school class, but, to be honest, we probably spend more time reading someone’s reflections on the text, either in a devotional or a quarterly, than we actually spend in the Holy Word itself. I confess that I am not immune to this. Indeed, I may be the most guilty as I read the text to mine it for sermons and Bible studies. I may spend hours in my study on a particular text without taking the time to just listen for and to the text. As Jan exasperatingly asked me once, “So, how many books do you have on the Gospel of Luke?” (By the way, when you include commentary sets, the answer is 12!) For this reason, I work to include the Lectio Divina into my spiritual disciplines. This is a method where you learn to listen to the text and what the Holy Spirit may be saying to you in that text. The Lectio Divina is meant to be two-way communication – God speaks to us through the Word and we respond to God’s calling. The following is a model you can use. I suggest using a Bible that you find very readable that does not have a bunch of study notes. Indeed, it is best done with a Bible with no study notes that might distract you (use them for Sacra Pagina). The method is to listen for God, not some writer of notes! Read the text three times. Read slowly each time and pause between readings for a minute or two. During the second reading, take note of the word or phrase that caught your attention. During the third reading, stop when you are touched by a word or phrase. You have found the Word for you that day. Then follow through with reflecting on that passage. Take several minutes to think about that word or phrase and what it tells you that day. Then, respond; talk to God about what struck you. Vocalize a prayer of love or praise or lament or thanksgiving as you feel at that moment. Finally, rest. Take a few minutes to listen to God and enjoy being in God’s presence. Unfortunately, space here does not give me the option of telling you all my feelings about the Lectio Divina, but I can tell you that it is one of the most rewarding spiritual disciplines in my life. It reminds me to listen for God’s still, small voice through the Scriptures. We are in the season of Lent – a time for spiritual renewal. The Lectio Divina would be a wonderful discipline for the season. Since I preached Psalm 51 Sunday and Lent is a season of penitence before God, we could use it or one of the 7 Penitential Psalms (Psalms 6, 32, 38, 51, 102, 130, and 143) or other texts like Psalm 23, Psalm 121, Psalm 139:1-18 (maybe six verses at a time), Romans 8:26-27 or Romans 8:37-39. Listen for God’s Word; it is amazing what you will hear. We are grateful for your thoughts and prayers as we continue to prepare to share God’s love in song, word, and deed this summer in Boston, Mass. `âá|v tÇw jÉÜá{|Ñ Easter Orchestra Page 10 The Messenger CBF Children’s Choir Festival and Cantus Children’s Choir Camp The CBF Children’s Choir Festival for 2015 will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at FBC, Lumberton. The clinician for this festival once again is Sandy Holland. Sandy directs the Young Voices of Charlotte and is one of the premiere Children’s Choir directors in the United States. Children love her and love to sing for her. Choir leaders come many miles to learn from her. `âá|v tÇw jÉÜá{|Ñ Transportation and chaperone costs will be covered by the FBC music ministry. The cost for this festival including two meals is $25 per person. To reserve your place, please give your cash or check (in a marked envelope) to Brian by Sunday, February 1st. CANTUS is a an ecumenical residential choir camp for children on the beautiful campus of Pfeiffer University in Misenheimer, NC. This camp provides spiritual, social, and musical development for the growing child. This year’s camp is June 21-25. The cost for this camp is $200 with a $100 per child deposit. CANTUS is a great step in preparing older children for what’s ahead for them in Genesis! This camp exposes children to great teaching, as well as allowing time to explore handbells, handchimes, musical theatre, and other great activities. If your child is interested but cost is an issue, let Brian know. Children’s Movie Night Friday, March 13, 6:00-9:00 PM Broome Closet There will be pizza, popcorn, and drinks. Sign up with Marie by March 8. Movie choices are “Box Trolls” or “Rio 2.” Youth Clean Up for Missions The youth will meet at church at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 13 to clean some of the rooms and closets upstairs in the education building and to find items that the Peru Mission Team might be able to use in their May yard sale!
