Valentine's Family Date Night!
Fruit Kebobs
Valentine's Day celebrates true love and romance so
why not celebrate with everyone you love on a totally
awesome Family Date Night!
Make sure to include kids and parents in planning this
totally awesome date. Here are some ideas for you...
• Make Dinner together... maybe some mac n'
cheese, spaghetti or burgers!
• Family game of "Simon Says". This is a fun way to
work on listening and following directions! Start
with simple directions like "stop" or "jump". Build
up to two or three moves like "jump twice and
spin around once". If it becomes too difficult, go
back to one move. Be sure to have everyone in
the family be Simon!
1-2 Bananas- peeled and cut into 1/4" slices
Whole strawberries- washed, dried, tops cut off
1/2 pineapple- cut into 1/2" cubes
Fresh berries- washed, dried, leaves removed
1 bag marshmallows
12 Wooden skewers
To assemble skewers- in any order, skewer through
the center of strawberries, bananas and other tasty
treats. If you would like a little more sweetness, you
can dust with a little powdered sugar or dip in melted
chocolate!

and raise some funds! A special Thank You to those
volunteers and servers who helped out!
The following weekend was DSACC's Winter Social- we
had a great time dancing and hanging out with Santa.
There were lots of new faces and we loved seeing you all
there! Thank You to the volunteers who helped DSACC
have a great holiday party!

A Look Back….
Contributed by Denise Allshouse
As we kick off our 15th year of serving our loved
ones with Down syndrome, their families, health
care providers and educators, I thought it would be
interesting for our members to learn a little bit about
the founders of our great organization.
In 1997, Ruth Hutchison called from Exceptional
Parents Unlimited with a request for me to attempt
to put together a group for parents who had children
with Down syndrome. It took two years for me to
feel established enough in the community to look
for founders that might join me in forming a new
society for our families. It also took that time to
realize that not only did our families need a resource
for fellowship and education, but that the healthcare
providers and educators in their lives were in need of
information relating to the best practices for people
with Down syndrome.
In the early months of planning the founders realized
that it would be much easier to begin the organization
with the legal work related to starting a nonprofit
already in place. We met from April of 1999 until
the first public meeting in August of 1999 laying the
foundation for the nonprofit we know today as Down
Syndrome Association of Central California. It was in
January of 2000 that we received notice from the IRS
that our nonprofit status had been approved and we
never looked back.
There were five founders, all with huge hearts
for their loved ones with Down syndrome, who
stepped up to begin the formative process of legally
establishing Fresno Area Down Syndrome Society:
Bobbie Coulbourne, Shannon Coats, Leslie Bergquist,
Carmie Mullen, and myself.
Bobbie Coulbourne, our first Secretary, brought some
great talent to the table because of her background
of working for a nonprofit. To this day, Bobbie works
tirelessly for our families in her role of administrator
of the Parent Training Information Center located
at EPU. She is a great advocate for our friends with
developmental disabilities in the field of education.
Shannon Coats was Vice President of our first group.
Shannon is a registered nurse who works in Tulare and
does home visits with families who have a child with
a disability. Just like all of our founders, Shannon’s
enthusiasm stemmed from her desire to help families
like hers who were lacking a diagnosis specific
resource of information.
Leslie Bergquist was our first Treasurer. Leslie
contributed a great deal of information that helped to
establish the nonprofit status because of her training
as an accountant, and was instrumental in getting the
accounting for us off to a good start. Leslie and her
family moved to Florida shortly before we received
nonprofit status.
Carmie Mullen served as a founder because of her
immense knowledge of our community. In 2009,
Carmie received a unique recognition coined the
Pioneer Award. Carmie’s contributions to the
community in the areas of education and sports,
especially Special Olympics, were barrier breaking.
Her motivations were her two daughters, Deby and
Kathy (sorely missed), both Olympians in their own
right. Needless to say, her community resources were
instrumental in helping us to establish the foundation
of a well connected organization capable of serving so
many of our families in the Central Valley.
Many of you know my story. I am so very blessed
to have been given the opportunity to help in the
creation of such a wonderful organization. My
husband Mike, a physician at Children’s Hospital,
was joined at the hip with me in our quest to truly
provide a quality resource for our loved ones with
Down syndrome, their families, healthcare providers,
and educators. I always tell people that there are five
founding families because without the support of our
spouse and/or families we would never have been
able to pull off the work required to attain our goal of
a establishing a Down syndrome society.
Thousands of lives have been touched because of the
work that was started in 1999. Many of you, from
Modesto to Bakersfield, have played a significant role
in enhancing the quality of life for all people whose
lives have been touched by Down syndrome. Your
loved ones with Down syndrome are truly grateful.
With this in mind, please save the date and plan to
join us for a joyful 15th anniversary gala to be held
on October 25, 2014. For more information, you may
contact me at [email protected].

Down.
Down.
California Central.
Down.
Bobbie Coulbourne, Shannon Coats, Leslie
Bergquist, Carmie Mullen, y yo Bobbie Coulbourne,
organización no lucrativa.
Down.
7 comunicarse conmigo a [email protected].

RELATIONSHIP TRAINING for ADULTS
DSACC is excited to announce RELATIONSHIP TRAINING for ADULTS (18 & older), funded in part by a grant from the Fansler
Foundation. The primary objective of this course will be to provide adults with developmental disabilities information
about relationships; the boundaries and responsibilities associated with them in a teaching setting that will respect
participants' different learning styles and abilities.
The curriculum includes lessons about different kinds of feelings and behaviors that occur in each kind of relationship,
as well as discussions about appropriate public and private talk. We'll explore how relationships grow and move from
friendship to a partner/sweetheart, and learn ways to talk about feelings and solve problems when in a relationship. The
class will also explore how to identify if your relationship has gone bad and examine ways to end a relationship and deal
with your feelings in a healthy way. Family values and sensitivity are of utmost concern and if concerns or specific issues
surface during the course, it will be important to share those with either of the course facilitators. Throughout this course,
participants will have topics that are designed to promote and encourage family discussions. We hope that you will support
this process and be an active participant!
