American folk songs and spirituals, English madrigals,
Romantic gems and a sampling of world folk songs. Artistic
Director Dr. Laura Lane says “This is one of the most
beautiful and entertaining programs we have ever done. To
choose the very best pieces from the last 30 years, and to put
them all together in this unique mixture of styles and sounds--that was a fun challenge! Now, in each rehearsal with the
Singers, what a joy it is to meet again our old friends:
Duruflé’s Ubi caritas, Brahms’ Schaffe in mir Gott and all
these old, familiar folk songs. I absolutely love doing Oh!
Susanna, Amazing Grace, Shenandoah, Ain’a That Good
News!, and the most dramatic and exciting of Moses
Hogan’s spirituals, Elijah Rock and Battle of Jericho. We are
having a blast, and I know the audience will too!”

GALESBURG — A local
flower shop recently brought
home awards from a regional
florists’ convention.
Galesburg Flower Company
owner Mike Rogers won
second place in the corsage
category, and head designer Blaine Utsinger won
third place in the “anything goes” category. They
competed in late August at the annual fall show
hosted by Bonnett Wholesale Florist in Milan.
“It makes me proud,” Rogers said. “It says that
we're putting out a product that's as good as or
better than anywhere around. ... We're on the edge
of design as far as being forward thinking.”
Florists from Wisconsin, Iowa, Indiana and
Missouri also attended the convention.
“We’re competing against shops in pretty big areas,”
Rogers said. Nearly 300 shops attended and the
entries were judged by experts from across the
country.
For the anything goes category, Utsinger and the
other entrants had no limitations besides how
much they could spend.
For Rogers, the annual convention is a learning
opportunity for his employees.
“I try to have everybody in the shop go up there
at least once during that weekend, so they see
what's available to us,” Rogers said. “It’s a good
educational day. They have seminars all day long,
they have guest designers, you hear about new
techniques, you get to talk to the people actually
growing the product.”
In the eight years Galesburg Flower Company has
been around, it has won 10 awards at this annual
competition, Rogers said.
Galesburg Flower Company purchased Anderson
Florists and moved to its Broad Street location in
2010, when Don Anderson retired five years ago.

On Friday, September 18,
I had the great privilege of
attending the first installment
of the Knox 101-The
Brownbag Series. I asked
Payton Rose, our Knox
Corp Fellow at the Welcome
Center to join me. It was held
in the Trustee Room on the
third floor of the wonderfully
renovated Alumni Hall. The
subject of the talk was the new
Whitcomb Heritage Center on
the third floor of Alumni Hall
and the Wilson Gallery on the
main floor of Old Main. This
event included a tour.
Jeff Douglas, director of
Seymour Library, introduced
us to the recently installed
Alumni Hall and Old Main
history exhibits. He was joined
by Owen Muelder ‘63, director
of the Underground Railroad
Freedom Center, for the tours.
In the Whitcomb Heritage
Center, we found an amazing
museum commemorating
the United States, Illinois,
Galesburg and Knox College
in the 1850s. This time frame
was chosen to tie in the 5th
Lincoln Douglas Debate that
was held at Knox on October
7th, 1858. There are museum
quality exhibits and rare
artifacts on display depicting
the times. Right now, the
surveying equipment, used to
originally plot Galesburg, and
8
several artifacts used by
George Washington Gale
are included in the exhibit.
There are sweeping
vistas of Washington
D.C., Galesburg and
Knox College. There
are stories that will captivate
visitors. Best of all, this
gallery is free and open to the
public. We will be boasting
about it to visitors at the
Welcome Center.
If this talk and tour
ended at the Whitcomb
Heritage Center I would
have been more than
satisfied with Jeff &
Owen and Knox College.
So, when we walked
between the raindrops
and entered Old Main, I
was pleasantly surprised
to see that there was
much more to the story
and the exhibits.
The Lincoln Room in Old Main
has been carefully updated
and fitted with multimedia
capabilities. The room has
always captivated me. Now, it
is new and improved.
The Wilson Gallery is located
in the hallway on the main
floor of Old Main. It is filled
with museum quality exhibits
explaining the mission of
Knox College. There were
wonderful vintage photos
mounted throughout the halls.
Included in this exhibit is a
wonderful parallel of Lincoln
and Knox. One exhibit
shows four of the books Abe
used to educated himself.
Like us on Facebook
These books were William
Blackstone’s Commentaries
on the Laws of England,
the Complete Works of
Shakespear, Euclid’s
Phaenomena and the King
James Bible.
In the main entry to Old Main
there is a bronze life mask
of Abe Lincoln from 1860. It
is mounted so that it can be
touched and
examined
by anyone.
This is my
favorite part
of the entire
exhibit.
I encourage
everyone
to take the
time to stroll
through the
Whitcomb
Heritage
Center and the Wilson
Gallery. The Whitcomb
Center is named for alumni,
Dick and Joan Whitcomb.
They were substantial donors
to the Alumni Hall renovation.
The Wilson Gallery is named
for famed Lincoln Scholar
and Knox College professor
Douglas Wilson.

My name is Payton Rose and I graduated
Knox College with a major in Political
Science and minors in Creative Writing and
Spanish. Although I have spent the majority
of my life in the Denver, Colorado suburbs,
I am proud to call Galesburg my home. My
interest in the KnoxCorps program and the
convention and visitors bureau comes from
my desire to give back to the community that has
housed me and helped me grow these last four
years. I enjoy all sorts of outdoor activities, like
hiking and biking, but feel at home surfing the web
and reading news articles. In true Knox fashion,
my interests have taken me in many directions,
leaving my future somewhat up in the air. I hope
to continue to explore the Galesburg area and
finally make it around to all the historic sites that
the city has to offer. While I’m most excited about
the prospect of helping build tourism through
technical skills and projects, one of the best parts
about my job is getting to learn something new
about the surrounding area every day.
