Same Mission
While many years have gone by since the founding of the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation in
1960, our mission remains the same; our promise to attain highest scholarship, to create the
widest influence for good and to commit to love. The Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation is here
to continue the fulfillment of those promises for collegians and alumnae all over the world.
For almost 50 years we’ve been striving to give every Theta every opportunity to make a
difference, and we can’t do what we do without you. Our mission is to link Thetas with
resources to help them reach their fullest potential and make a difference in the world.
Whether you give, receive or share, you are a part of what makes our mission possible.
For more information on how you can be a part of the promise, please enjoy this publication
and visit our new website at www.kappaalphathetafoundation.org.

WIDEST INFLUENCE FOR GOOD
Making a Difference Around the Corner
and Across the Globe
Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation programs are a manifestation of Theta ideals. Since 1994, the Foundation
has been demonstrating its commitment to the widest influence for good by providing individual
Thetas, chapters and the Fraternity at large with grants to support leadership training and non-degree
educational programming.
The experiences made possible by Foundation grants provide Thetas with the training necessary to
create change in themselves, their communities and even the world. Within the last few years, Foundation
grants have made it possible for Thetas to...
…send African refugees from the Congo back home
…transform a not-for-profit organization
…attend nationally-recognized leadership programs
…conduct medical research
…bring fresh water to the people of Kenya and Uganda
…learn valuable skills to deal with today’s social expectations for women
…vaccinate children in Peru
…provide values based programming to campuses across North America
These examples represent just a small number of the many accomplishments made possible.
Since the Fraternity’s founding in 1870, Thetas have made a difference in every aspect of society; from
human rights, to science, and the arts. Members of Kappa Alpha Theta have a legacy of leadership in the
effort to make our world a better place.
But to ensure that this legacy continues, we must support the efforts of both current and future
members. The Foundation grants program provides the course of action necessary by positioning Thetas
to remain influential leaders in today’s world. And while the grants program has great potential, as the
newest Foundation program it also has the fewest resources. An individual, group of individuals, facility
corporation, college or alumnae chapter may establish a named endowed grant with the Foundation.
For more information on how you can make a difference through the Foundation grant program, including
how to establish or apply for a grant and to read stories from grant recipients, visit the Foundation
website: www.kappaalphathetafoundation.org.

Scarlet’s Story
In memory of Scarlet Lawrence Akins
(Epsilon Zeta / Mississippi)
By: Cheryl Lawrence-Moore, Scarlet’s mother
September 1997:
Learning about sisterly love
My daughter Scarlet Lawrence Akins was a scared young lady, afraid that
not one sorority at Ole Miss would want her. Of course, we did all that was
necessary to have her be considered: We got the recommendations, we
bought the “recruitment clothes,” and we tried to prepare her in case she
wasn’t chosen. I was as nervous as she was.
As it turns out, the right sorority chose the right girl.
Thank goodness for Kappa Alpha Theta! I watched with tears running down
my face as she “ran the hill” to her new Theta family at the Epsilon Zeta
chapter – a new family for her to love, and one that would love her back in
more ways that we ever could have hoped. I saw Scarlet grow, mature and
form friendships that would never have been possible without her choosing
Theta and Theta choosing her.
Spring 2004:
Sharing Theta love
Scarlet received her master’s degree in journalism and became a
magazine editor in Atlanta. But, Scarlet soon returned to Mississippi
to pursue her true love of teaching. Scarlet continued to be active in
Theta through the early years of her career. She joined the Epsilon
Zeta Chapter advisory board as facility advisor. Serving Theta required
Scarlet to drive over an hour to the chapter, sometimes multiple times
a week, but she loved working with the girls and staying connected
to Theta. Giving back to the group that had loved her so much was
important to her. Scarlet wanted to help continue that love for other
women to experience.
April 2006:
Love to get you through
Scarlet was a newlywed and pregnant. She was thrilled to be having a baby,
but she kept getting very sick. Everyone, including her doctors, told her that
she would feel better after the first trimester. But, something really wasn’t
right. She continued to feel sick. She lost weight, had a terrible cough and
was nauseous all the time.
So in April 2006, I came up to Mississippi from Florida to go with Scarlet
to the doctor - I was not leaving until someone told me what was wrong
with my daughter. So, the doctors ordered the CAT scan for which all the
love in the world could not have prepared us. The heartbreaking result was
Melanoma. It had already spread to her brain, spine and lungs.
Love had played a large role in Scarlet’s life in so many ways up until that
point, but love couldn’t fix this. We could only love her through it. I would
have gladly traded places with her. But, that wasn’t a part of God’s plan.
15
LOV E
May 9th, 2006:
New love
Scarlet went home from the doctor to gain as
much weight as she could so she could deliver a
healthy baby and then begin cancer treatments.
On May 9th 2006, Scarlet gave us a little miracle.
Madison Grace was born weighing just 3 pounds
8 ounces. She was perfect, just tiny. The love that
filled my heart was overwhelming. The circle of
mother-daughter to mother-daughter was made.
Scarlet would know for the first time the love that
only a mother can have for their child. Scarlet
never thought that Madison Grace would live. I
knew she felt it when I saw the tears run down
her face as she held her newborn. It still warms
my heart to have seen that unconditional love on
my child’s face.
July 24th, 2006:
Unexpected love
We received an unexpected check from the
Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation’s Friendship
Fund on July 24, 2006. Scarlet was in hospice.
I leaned over to her and said, “Hey, Scarlet, the
Theta Foundation gave you a very nice check.”
I don’t know if she fully understood at that
point, but we told her. And she smiled. The love
Scarlet felt for Theta could never be denied.
The Friendship Fund gift was confirmation that
Theta Love most certainly comes full circle.
August 4th, 2006:
Everlasting love
Three short months after the birth of her beautiful daughter, Scarlet left this world. The pain in the hospital
room on that day was only made bearable by the love shared by our entire family as we spent our last
moments with Scarlet. We surrounded her; we told her we loved her, we cried and prayed. I promised her that
I would take care of Madison Grace. My last words to her were this; “I was with you when you took your first
breath and I will be here for your last. I will love you forever. Go and rest now. We will see you again.”
16
LOV E
August 2008:
Love in all the right places
Everything we do in this life comes from love. The love for
a cause, the love for friends, the love for family – it guides
our decisions and makes us who we are.
It has been two years since I last held Scarlet’s hand,
smelled her skin, laughed at her jokes, or heard her voice.
I miss all of that, but mostly I miss my friend. We loved
spending time together. I am sometimes jealous when I see
an adult mother and daughter out shopping or at lunch. I
want to run up to them and say, “Enjoy this time! You don’t
know how lucky you are to have each other.” So, when
your mother calls you and bugs you, enjoy it! She’s calling
because she loves you.
A Note about
Melanoma prevention:
Dear Thetas and friends,
Since education was Scarlet’s true calling,
I would be remiss if I did not tell you that
Scarlet did not have to die. She had a mole
that changed shape, color and size. She was
busy with her life and was probably afraid
to find out what it could be. Had she gotten
to a doctor and had it removed, she would
still be here. So, Scarlet would tell you this
if she were here today; stay out of tanning
beds, out of the sun during the hours of 10
to 4 and always, always wear sunscreen. As
her parent, I wonder what I could have done.
I could have made sure she never, never got
sunburned. Please, protect your loved ones
and yourselves. Think of Scarlet and share
her story to save someone else.
With Love, Cheryl
How You Can Help
Scarlet’s love for Theta was apparent. It was this love that
inspired her to put the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation
in her will. It was an easy decision for her and for our
family. That same love inspired us to donate money from
the Scarlet Lawrence Akins Foundation to the Theta
Foundation’s Friendship Fund, which had helped my darling
daughter in her time of need. It gave me great comfort to
give back to the Theta Foundation - that is where Scarlet
would want the money to go. After all, “Kappa Alpha Theta”
appears proudly on Scarlet’s headstone. She would be
proud to help another Theta sister.
We only hope that one day Madison Grace will be
surrounded by sisters as special as Scarlet’s and feel the
love and friendship that create the kind of bond that her
mother cherished so much with Theta.
Theta is a blessing, like a great friendship:
“The best kind of friend is the kind you can sit on a porch
with, never say a word, and then walk away feeling like it
was the best conversation you’ve ever had.”
Scarlet received a gift from the Kappa
Alpha Theta Foundation Friendship Fund,
through which Thetas are able to support
sisters in need due to severe financial
distress, catastrophic illness, natural disaster,
and urgent family crisis.
You can help sisters like Scarlet by
donating to the Friendship Fund online at
www.kappaalphathetafoundation.org. Simply
indicate “Friendship Fund” in the text box
on the online donation form or on your
next mail-in donation to the Foundation.
To nominate a sister in need of Friendship
Fund assistance, please contact Cindy
Thoennes, Foundation Manager of
Programs and Administration, at
[email protected]
or 1.888.KAO.1870 ext. 119. Due to the
sensitive nature of Friendship Fund requests,
nominations are kept confidential.
Our heartfelt gratitude to Cheryl LawrenceMoore and her family for sharing Scarlet’s
personal story with us.

– Mariann Cherry Powell (Alpha Mu/Missouri)
The Pansy Patch debuted this summer in Miami as the
Foundation’s Grand Convention fundraiser. Thetas and
friends could participate whether they were at Convention
or not – and so many did! By donating $5.00 for a special
die-cut pansy to honor a sister or friend, Foundation
donors created a huge Theta Pansy Patch at Convention.
Thank you for your participation!

Final Thoughts
By: Wendy Goshert, Gamma/Butler, Foundation President
“Be the Change You Wish
to See in the World”
- Gandhi
It seems everywhere I turn these days I hear the word “change”. Change is an inevitable part
of life, whether we like it or not. Oftentimes change is bittersweet. While we welcome new
opportunities, it can be hard to let go of the past or the way things were. New territory can
be frightening. Chartering in to the unknown can seem like a risk. However, we can’t achieve
greatness in life by doing things the same way over and over again. To be great, we need change.
Along with change, it often means that many times we need to make choices. The Kappa Alpha
Theta Foundation has a plethora of opportunities in front of us, but the reality is that we only have
so many resources. Thus, it leaves us, your Board of Trustees, with the difficult decision of choosing
which to pursue. During our last board meeting we chose to return to the basics and the core of
why we all love Kappa Alpha Theta. We want you, our supporters, to know that the core values of
our Fraternity and the impetus for creating the Foundation in 1960 remain relevant today. “Highest
Scholarship” and “Widest Influence for Good” are quite simply the Foundation’s reason for existing.
Every program we fund and every opportunity we pursue must pass a simple litmus test, “Does it
help us fulfill these values?” By answering this question, our mission is crystal clear, “Linking members
with resources to help them reach their fullest potential and to make a difference in the world.”
I hope that as you enjoyed reading this issue of the Foundation’s fall publication, you, like I, saw
that these amazing women of Kappa Alpha Theta provide hope as they demonstrate the values
of highest scholarship and widest influence for good in an ever changing world. We hope that
your choice to support the Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation continues in the years to come. As
our economy struggles, your support means more to us than ever. Your gifts will impact and
determine to what level we will be able to achieve our mission. We truly believe that our mission
is a vital mission during these trying times when so many Thetas have the opportunity to create
positive change in the world and to make it a better place for each of us to live. A choice, I hope
you will continue to make.
The Foundation is the Theta entity that can connect potential with possibility. A cornerstone of
our ability to sustain members in these efforts is the annual gifts received from you, our donors.
Your contributions have enabled us to consistently grow, prosper and provide excellent support to
individual members, chapters and the Fraternity at large. Our time-tested tradition must continue
even more so in trying economic times. The truth is that we just can’t do what we do without
you. This year, I thank you for your support and ask that it continue as we give every Theta every
opportunity to make a difference. Through the women of Kappa Alpha Theta, I believe we can
unleash the positive change we wish to see in the world.

Our Apologies
We made just a few mistakes in our Spring 2008 Publication. Please note the following corrections:
Cover: The photo pictures Delta/Illinois members Courtney Hildenbrand, Kristy Jackson, and Jessica Wind, taken while studying abroad in Munich, Germany.
p. 23: Kristin Hellquist (Beta Kappa/Drake) is quoted and pictured with her Theta sisters at her wedding.
p. 38: Congratulations and thank you to Zeta Rho / UC-San Diego, the top college chapter in overall giving in 2007, contributing $16,421.39.
