[email protected]
On behalf of the administration, faculty and staff of Garces Memorial High School, I want to take this
opportunity to welcome you to academic year 2013-2014. I want to begin by thanking Monsignor Michael R.
Braun for his years of service and dedication to Garces Memorial in service as our Rector and by introducing
Monsignor Perry J. Kavookjian as our new Rector. After completing a very successful and productive sevenyear term as Rector of Garces Memorial High School, Reverend Monsignor Braun will be succeeded by
Reverend Monsignor Kavookjian at the position effective June of 2013. Monsignor Braun will remain as
the Pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Parish and School. Most Reverend Armando X. Ochoa, Bishop of
the Diocese of Fresno, has also announced that Reverend Monsignor Robert Wenzinger will be succeeding
Reverend Father Daniel Norris as Rector of sister-school San Joaquin Memorial High School.
During his tenure as Rector, Monsignor Braun initiated and/or completed many significant projects, including
but not limited to:
• Upgrade and expansion of the entire underground electrical system in preparation for future building
projects
• Construction of the Cerro Science Building
• Construction of the St. Dominic Student Chapel
• Construction of the Salvucci Aquatic Center, the new tennis courts, and the new batting cages
• Renovation and repair of the student and staff parking lots
• Upgrade of the school’s technological infrastructure in preparation for 1:1 iPad student distribution
• Restructure of the Board of Directors and various Board committees
• Development of a school-wide financial plan and financial accounting system
Currently, Garces Memorial and Our Lady of Perpetual Help Grammar School are working together on
construction of a 4,000 square foot Music Building on the Garces Memorial campus. Additionally, the Garces
Memorial campus is moving to a 1:1 iPad model beginning this school year. All students at Garces Memorial
will be issued an iPad allowing instruction in all phases of the curriculum to be iPad and technology driven.

I hope that your summer has been both an enjoyable
and relaxing one. Although the official start of our
new school year is still a few weeks away, please allow me to be one of the first to extend a warm “Garces welcome” to our incoming freshman, transfer students and their families and a hearty “welcome back”
to all the other members of our extended Garces family.
As Principal of Garces Memorial High School,
I want to thank you for making the careful
choice and financial sacrifice to send your
sons and daughters to Garces Memorial High
School, one of the top, if not the best college
preparatory high schools in Kern County. At
Garces, we want to continue to earn your respect and trust as Catholic educators by exhibiting integrity, compassion, courage of faith
and Respect in all our actions. Whether we
follow popular opinion or not, you can be assured that we will consistently honor and uphold our Catholic heritage and the Philosophy
and Mission of Garces Memorial High School.
It is by our demonstrated actions in living the
Garces Philosophy every day and our partnering with our parents that differentiates us from
other schools throughout the Bakersfield area.

Letter from the President
These, and many other accomplishments, were made possible through the
direction and leadership of Monsignor Braun. Thank you, Monsignor, for
everything you have done and continue to do for the students, families,
and entire Garces Memorial High School community.
Monsignor Kavookjian is the Pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish,
where he is in the process of establishing and building a parish and
constructing a new Church and Religious Center. Additionally, he
has recently been elected to the position of Vicar for the Kern/Inyo
Deanery. Thank you, Monsignor Kavookjian, for accepting the role and
responsibility as Rector of Garces Memorial. The Garces Memorial High
School community looks forward to your direction, guidance, and spiritual
leadership. God bless Monsignor Braun and Monsignor Kavookjian.
May God continue to bless Garces Memorial High School.
The Mission Statement of the school clearly defines who we are and what
we stand for: “Garces Memorial High School is a Catholic, coeducational
college preparatory high school. Our school educates youth to fulfill the
mission of Jesus Christ by developing students spiritually, intellectually,
and socially. Our mission calls us to instill in every member of the
Garces Memorial community respect, integrity, compassion, and courage
of faith.” With a mission and philosophy based on the teachings and
traditions of our Catholic faith, and under the direction of the Roman
Catholic Diocese of Fresno, we at Garces Memorial are commissioned
to create a setting where positive decision-making is being fostered in
a Christian environment…where our students are taught not only to
worship and pray, but more importantly how to worship and pray; where
our students are taught not only to reason and think critically, but more
importantly how to reason and think critically; where our students are
taught not only the importance and necessity of serving the community
through their efforts, but more importantly are directed, encouraged, and
shown how to do just that.
Studies have shown that the most effective method of education is one
that combines the involvement of a dedicated, knowledgeable, and
enthusiastic school community with equally enthusiastic and dedicated
family support. Our School Philosophy clearly states that we work “in
partnership with” you, our parents and guardians, in this effort. Whether
you are the parent/guardian of a returning student, a transfer student, or
a freshman student – whether your involvement with Garces Memorial
is lengthy or relatively new – we look forward with much anticipation
and excitement to working with you to make this year a truly memorable
and productive one.

There are many diverse ways for you to get involved. We encourage
you to attend any or all of our many religious, social, extra-curricular,
or athletic events held on campus. We encourage your attendance and
support at our various fund-raising and fun-raising events held throughout
the year. The first of these events is the annual Fall Barbecue on Thursday,
October 3rd, in the quad on campus. For more information about this
event and the various events and gatherings throughout the year, please
go on-line to our web-site at www.garces.org, or call me at 661-3272578, ext. 116. And of course, your participation in our Parent-Student
Involvement (P.S.I.) program is a wonderful way for you to support your
children and the school.
It takes many individuals and groups to assure the success of our school.
One of those very important and critical groups is our Garces Memorial
High School Board of Directors. Under the leadership of Monsignor
Kavookjian, and the direction of Mr. Dan Giordano ’66, our Board
Chairman, our Board continues to serve as a driving force behind the
success of our school. Other Board members include Dr. Tom Berry,
Mr. Steve Del Papa, Mrs. Elaine Jamison, Mr. Ray Karpe ’83, Mr. Bernie
LeBeau, Mr. Greg Petrini '85, Mrs. Dianne Riley ’73, Mr. John Szewczyk,
and Mrs. Lonie Wattenbarger. The Board of Directors functions as a body
made up of committees and sub-committees which address the various
needs/concerns of the school. If you wish to find out more about our Board
of Directors and/or our various committees, you may contact me at (661)
327-2578, ext. 116, or by email at [email protected].
I want to thank you parents, grandparents, and guardians for your
commitment and dedication to Garces Memorial. Your gifts of time,
expertise, resources, and prayers are a real blessing to our school and are
so very appreciated by all associated with the school. We could not be
successful without each and every one of you. I want to thank you for
entrusting in us the awesome responsibility of your child’s high school
education. We have been working tirelessly to assure you and your
students that this will truly be a valuable, productive, and special year.
We look forward to the up-coming year with excitement and anticipation.
We feel blessed and honored to be given the opportunity to work with and
for such fine people as you and your children.
I look forward to seeing you at our many gatherings and social events. I
look forward to meeting and speaking with you personally. If you ever
wish to contact me, for any reason, I may be reached at (661) 327-2578,
ext. 116 or by email at [email protected]. Thank you! God bless
you! God bless Garces Memorial High School!

Dean’s Notes
We would like to thank you, the parents, for the opportunity to
help mold your sons and daughters to be Children of God. Our
goal this year is to provide for your daughters and sons a safe
and supportive learning environment where the mission of the
school can be fulfilled. We would like to highlight important areas so
both you and your student understand the expectations of them, and so
that our students can successfully begin the upcoming school year with no
unwelcome surprises.
can be directed to her at 327-2579. In the event that your student is going
to be absent from school, please call the attendance line (327-2579) prior to
9:15 A.M. each day of the absence. If a parent does not clear the absence
by calling, the student may be given after school detention.
Parent Student Handbook
Continuing our efforts to go green, the 2013-2014 Parent Student Handbook
and Calendar will be available for students to download on their I-pad.
Instructions will be given to students at Orientation in August. The Parent
Student Handbook and Calendar will be available for parents to view and
become familiar with on our Garces website. Instructions to download
the Handbook and Calendar to an electronic device will also be available
on the website. Students are expected to familiarize themselves with the
school policies, schedules, programs, and calendar.
Off-Campus Passes
In the event that an appointment cannot be scheduled outside of school
hours, students will be released to Doctor or Dentist visits only with a prior
phone call and written note or e-mail release from a parent or guardian. A
phone call is needed but it is not sufficient, by itself, to excuse a student from
campus. Please help us in our efforts to ensure the safety of our students
traveling to these appointments by sending or faxing a note in advance of
the appointment to the office. Upon return to school, a doctor’s notice
must be presented to the Attendance Clerk in order for the absence to
be marked EXCUSED.
I-pads
We are very excited about initiating our individualized I-pad program this
year. Students are required to abide by all terms and conditions outlined
in the Acceptable Use Policy signed by the parent and student prior to
receiving their I-pad. This Policy may be reviewed on the Garces website.
Please remind your student to safeguard their I-pad at all times. Students
should not leave their I-pad in an unattended backpack before school, at
break, lunch, or all after school activities. Students should use their lockers
and insure they are closed and locked properly.
Dress and Grooming Code
We wish to thank you parents for the incredible sacrifices that you make
to get your sons and daughters to school dressed as college preparatory
students. We also want to assure you parents that we will enforce the dress
code as it is written in the current Handbook. Updates to the Dress Code
this year come from suggestions, input and discussions with our students,
parents and faculty prior to review and approval by our Administrative
team. Our uniform company has assured us that they can fit every body
type. All we ask is that parents work with us and Norman’s Uniforms
to explore all options. Please contact us as soon as possible if you are
experiencing difficulties, so that we will know before your student receives
a detention.
Change in Dress Code Policy:
Please impress upon your daughters that this year the Garces skirt must
show 4 horizontal yellow lines below the waistband and also extend
below the students fingertips.
Girl’s shorts must also extend below
the students fingertips. Girls with skirts or shorts not adhering to this
length must accept the possibility that they may receive a JUG for a first
offense. Repeat offenses will result in individual girls losing the privilege
of wearing skirts or shorts for the remainder of the semester. Loss of
privilege will require the student to wear Norman’s long pants.
Please impress upon your sons to make it their responsibility to keep their
hair trimmed to the school expectations. Shaving each day for some is
a must. If a student is in need of a shave, he will be expected to shave
using a disposable razor provided in the office for $1.00 and a JUG will
be issued. Please encourage your sons to shave daily.
As a reminder to all students, NO boots, moccasins or slippers of any kind
are acceptable footwear and are not allowed as part of the uniform.
Any family who, because of financial hardship, is struggling to get their
students fitted for this year should also contact the Dean’s Office as soon
as possible.
Please refer to the Dress Code for Dances which can be found in the
Parent Student Handbook.
Attendance
Ms. Sherry Hylton does a wonderful job of keeping track of our students as
the Attendance Clerk. Any attendance questions, suggestions, or concerns
www.garces.org
Please note that because of the Block Schedule, students will lose credit
for any classes where they miss an excessive number of class meetings (as
determined by the Principal) in one semester.
Transportation and Parking
All students are expected to park in the student parking lot. The cost of
a parking permit is $20.00 for the year and the necessary paperwork is
available in the Business Office. Parents and guardians who drive their
students to school are requested to drop off and pick up students in the
main (front) parking lot on Loma Linda Drive. Student pick up and drop
off will not be allowed in the student parking lot.
Electronic Devices
Cell Phone Usage:
To assist parents and students in daily communication, students may
use cell phones before school, at break, during lunch, and after school.
However, cell phones may not be used in the classrooms, locker rooms,
or library at any time. The use of the camera feature of the cell phone
is not allowed on campus. This new policy is a privilege for students.
First offense violation of this rule will result in confiscation of the phone
and two JUGs. A second offense violation will result in a $25 fine, along
with confiscation of the cell phone and two JUGs. Additional offenses
will require a parent conference.
Please do not call or text your children during class time. If an emergency
occurs, please call the office or the attendance desk and we will immediately
bring your child to the office so that he/she may contact you in private.
During class time, if a student needs to make an emergency phone call,
he/she will be allowed to use a private line in the Administration Offices.
Any electronic item that becomes a distraction on campus, even during
break or lunch, will be confiscated and will only be returned to the parent/
guardian. The student will also be called upon to serve an appropriate
detention. Please assist us in maintaining a safe and secure campus
environment by limiting the use of these devices. In addition to detracting
from the learning environment, these very expensive items have also proven
to be a tempting target for thieves.
Tobacco, Alcohol and Illegal Drugs
In order to maintain a tobacco, alcohol and drug free safe learning
environment for all students at Garces, parents and students can expect, at
a minimum, the following actions:
•Random campus visits by Interquest dogs,
•Random breathalyzing of students prior to entering and exiting school
sponsored dances,
•Search of backpacks and bags prior to student trips,
•Search of student vehicle, backpack or locker with reasonable
suspicion,
•Mandatory individual drug testing as warranted and necessary.
If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to call us.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support.
Technology News:
iPad Roll-Out 2013-2014
By Guy Dees
[email protected]
We are so very excited about the progress of our 1:1 iPad roll-out for the 2013-2014 academic year. The distribution of the iPads to our
students is nearing completion. We realize that you may have questions regarding the usage of the iPad and even the device itself. If you
need assistance with the iPad or have general iPad related questions please feel free to contact Guy Dees. He can be reached by email
at [email protected].
From the Desk of the Principal
For those parents who currently have or have previously had a son or
daughter at Garces, you most likely know the intent of my highlighting
- Respect. Throughout the 2013-2014 school year, “Respect: to respect and honor God, self, and others.” will be the principle theme that
we will be emphasizing with your students, teaching and encouraging
them to show consideration or thoughtfulness towards God, themselves
and others they come in contact with at school, at home or throughout
our community. Our philosophy at Garces is to instill in every member of the Garces Memorial community respect, integrity, compassion,
and courage of faith. Our faculty, staff and administration continue to
work to build upon and improve the overall educational package Garces has to offer. We will constantly encourage each student to demonstrate respect so as to continue to grow the nurturing environment at
Garces where students develop spiritually, intellectually, and socially,
and which enables them to recognize their potential as People of God.
I would be remiss not to again thank everyone for your past support and
feedback. It is your support and constructive feedback that makes Garces so successful and the envy of every other school in Kern County. I
also look forward to the continuation of the same in the future, with the
chance to chat and to hear from every member of our Garces family,
whether it’s at school, or at one of our many after school activities or just
through a simple phone call or e-mail note. I need to know your thoughts
on what we are doing right and just as importantly where we can improve.
Our overall enrollment will be down slightly this fall as we all continue to
feel the lingering impact of the serious economic downturn that gripped
California and the entire United States. While Garces will greatly miss
those families who will be leaving us, we also want to extend a warm
Garces family welcome to those families who are transferring in from other high schools. We appreciate your faith in us and despite the prolonged
difficult economic environment, we will strive to provide the same high
level of education and service that every member of the Garces family
both desires and deserves. Again this year, I am very pleased to say that
no school programs or activities are planned for reduction or elimination.
What truly make Garces so great and successful year in and year out is
our exceptional parents and their generous efforts in providing assistance
for our school, our teachers, coaches, staff and students. Your efforts go
well beyond those expected and necessary in support of the educational
goals and objectives that have or will allow your students to succeed,
and well beyond those efforts requested through our PSI program in
support of our many school related activities. As I have said before
and will continue to repeat to the point of excess, it is the generosity
of each of our parents and the Garces family, in sharing your resources
and time that continues to make Garces the envy of every other school
in Kern County and beyond, even north to our sister school in Fresno.
Your generosity of time and effort has become legendary to the point
of jealousy and discomfort for other schools, especially when attending one of the many events hosted by the Garces faculty, our outstanding coaches and our parents. It is a “real” team effort. That’s just
the way Garces parents are. They do not have to, they want to and do.
For those of you new to Garces and also for those returning, two groups
which energetically support Garces student activities are our Booster Club
and Parent Club. The Booster Club has kicked off its membership drive
continued from page 1
for the school year. As a member you can get a yard sign, like the one we
have displayed in our front yard to show all our neighbors that “Home of a
Garces Ram”. It has also been great fun to attend the informal fall and spring
social get-togethers hosted by the Parent Club. It was wine from around
the world in the fall served by your very own Garces Administrative team,
and who wouldn’t agree that Italian wines are best served by our President
John Fanucchi. And you do not want to miss those Margaritas and munchies in the quad this spring. I want to thank both groups in advance for
their continued overwhelming support of Garces Memorial High School.
On a personal note, I want to thank Msgr. Michael Braun for his unselfish and lifetime support of Catholic education and Garces Memorial High
School. His wisdom and encouragement as Rector has been invaluable
and he will be sorely missed. I would then also like to welcome Msgr. Perry Kavookjian, who has graciously accepted the role of Rector for Garces
Memorial High School beginning this new school year. Please join me
in extending that warm Garces welcome to Msgr. Kavookjian whenever
you see him on campus or at one of our many student or parent events.
In closing, I look forward to what should be both a challenging but also
exciting new school year. If you have any questions or comments, please
do not hesitate to call or e-mail me as I both want and need your feedback
on how we are doing in our partnership and also how we may improve it.
God bless you, your sons and daughters and your entire family this
day, and every day.

Important Academic Information
I am very grateful to Monsignor Perry, Monsignor Braun, the school board,
and the administration of Garces Memorial for the continuing opportunity
to work with you parents, in raising your sons and daughters to be children
of God. It is with unparalleled enthusiasm that I look forward to serving another Academic Year as Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs.
For those of you who are new to Garces I would like to share a little
about my background. I am a product of private, Catholic education. I
attended K-8th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Downey, California, before entering Loyola High School in Los Angeles. I graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a B.A. in History and from
Point Loma Nazarene University with an M.A. in the field of Education Administration. This will be my 18th year in education, all of them
at Garces. I am committed to one goal for every one of your sons and
daughters and that is to provide a supportive learning environment where
the mission of the school can be fulfilled. My office is just across from
the attendance desk in the Administration building and my phone number is 327-2578 ext. 110. Please feel free to contact me for any reason.
HONOR ROLL
Congratulations to all students listed on the Honor Roll for the second semester of Academic Year 2012-2013. Keep up the good work.
IMPORTANT NOTE FOR SENIORS AND THEIR PARENTS
In order to participate in all graduation events (Baccalaureate Mass
and the Graduation Ceremony) seniors must pass all first and second
semester courses with a grade of D- or better and must complete all
required service hours by the printed deadline. Please refer to the Student Handbook for clarification under “Graduation Requirements”.
SCHEDULE CHANGES
Every year at the start of school, a handful of students revise their
academic plans and desire schedule changes. All schedule changes require parent approval. Schedule changes will be processed
through the Counseling office and will be addressed in order of
need beginning at break on Monday, August 19th. If you have any
questions please feel free to contact my office at extension 110.
SUMMER SCHOOL
All students who indicated that they were taking summer school classes at
Garces or at a community college or university should have turned in a completed Summer School Contract to their counselor prior to the beginning of
the summer session. This contract was used in planning the student’s course
selections for the current academic year. Failure to submit the contract
may have resulted in an incorrect schedule. Students who attended summer school at BC or university MUST make arrangements to have an official transcript sent to Garces before they may receive credit for any course.
ADD/DROP
Please note the last day to Add/Drop Classes for the first semester is Friday,
September 13th. All schedule changes are expected to be submitted by
this date.
BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT
Mark your calendars for Back to School night on Thursday, August
29th. Please come and meet your student’s teachers and hear about the
exciting plans they have for your child in the coming academic year.
iPads
This academic year marks a profound change in the education paradigm
at Garces Memorial High School. With the introduction of the iPad to
www.garces.org
Mike Susank
Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs
[email protected]
all students and faculty, Garces embarks upon an ambitious but necessary path to remain the premier high school within the San Joaquin
Valley. This device, however, is just a tool towards the steadfast goal
of a college preparatory education; to develop the intellectual skills
necessary for students to succeed in both the college and career setting. Student and parent understanding of the Acceptable Use Policy, school-wide technology policies, and teacher expectations is the
starting point. Back to School Night on August 29th will be a critical event to assist in your understanding of school-wide and individual
teacher plans for these devices as well as to hear information on how
to make this the most productive academic year in your child’s life.
All SCHOOL AWARDS
We will recognize last year’s outstanding academic achievements
on Wednesday, September 18th during a special assembly in Monsignor Leddy Hall. We time this event in September for two reasons.
In determining our award candidates, we can use the academic grades
from the entire year (both first AND second semester, which are only
available after the school year ends) and we also wish to start the year
giving students goals to which they can aspire in the coming months.
ON-LINE ACCESS TO GRADE INFORMATION FOR
PARENTS AND STUDENTS
Parents and Students can access up-to-the-minute grades from any
networked computer through NetClassroom. Students and parents
can contact their counselor for login information. New parents should
plan to receive login information at Back to School Night on August
29th. Visit the school Website at www.garces.org and click on the NetClassroom link to access this valuable link to your child’s progress.
To View the Report Card (once they have been posted), login to NetClassroom and select the “Students” tab. Select “Report Card”. Please note,
pop-ups MUST be allowed in order to view the report card. If you have any
questions, please contact me (Ext. 110) or Mr. Doug Dill, at extension 113.
ON-LINE REPORT CARDS
Garces is committed to furthering the speed of reporting of student
grades to parents. With that in mind, progress reports and quarter report cards will be posted online through NetClassroom three school
days after each grading period ends. Semester Report cards are the
ONLY report cards we plan to mail home. You can expect to see semester grades in the mail in January and June, at the conclusion of each
semester. Online grades will post September 17th (progress report),
October 15th (quarter grades used for athletic eligibility), November
12th (progress report), and January 9th (semester grade also used for
athletic eligibility). In the second semester, grades will post on a similar
schedule to be published in the January newsletter. Parents MUST have
their NetClassroom access code in order to view these grades online.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS AND COURSE
EXPECTATIONS
The Garces Website provides parents with instant access to their
child’s daily homework assignments as well as course expectations (Green Sheets) for each of their classes. Each teacher has a
homepage through the Garces website (www.garces.org). Homework assignments are to be posted by 4 PM each day for each
class. The Green Sheets are distributed to all students in class
on the first day of school but are also posted on each teacher’s web
page. Please download this information and keep it for reference.
CAMPUS MINISTRY
Mass of the Holy Spirit
Mass of the Holy Spirit will be celebrated with
Bishop Ochoa at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday,
September 11th. Campus Ministry will hold
a reception for our bishop, priests, deacons,
religious and special guests right after the
Mass. Parents are invited to join us for this
special liturgy.
Kairos Retreat
Campus Ministry is excited to once again
offer our students the Kairos Retreat. This is
a three-day, intense retreat that is designed
to give students an opportunity to seek
out the Lord in their life through personal
testimonies, prayer, small group discussions,
and spiritual activities. Last year Garces
introduced Kairos with one retreat in the
fall and sent five students to San Joaquin
Memorial’s Kairos Retreat in the Spring. This
year the Kairos Retreat will be offered to
Juniors and Seniors and are scheduled for
October 16-18, 2013, and March 5-7, 2014.

Christian Life Community (CLC)
We are adding new groups to our CLC
program with sign-ups taking place the
end of August. If you would like your son
or daughter to be included in a CLC group,
please email Mrs. Susan Rizo at srizo@
garces.org. Christian Life Communities
provide students an opportunity to gather
in small groups for prayer, support and
community service. Faculty and staff
facilitate these groups and all students are
invited to join. For more information on
the CLC Program contact Susan Rizo in the
Campus Ministry Office.
Parent Spiritual Support Group
If you are interested in supporting the
Spiritual mission of our school, please
sign-up to be a part of our Parent Spiritual
Support Group. This group supports Campus
Ministry and many of the spiritual activities
on campus. Meetings will be scheduled
throughout the year to help coordinate
events. If interested please email Mrs. Rizo
at [email protected] or sign-up at the table at
Back To School Night.
Community Service
Don’t forget to turn in any hours done over
the summer to our Community Service
Coordinator, Mrs. Rosanne Guice. Service
hour verification forms can be picked up
in the Counseling Center, Main Office, or
on-line under Campus Ministry, “Community
Service”. Forms can be dropped off in the
green box in the Counseling Center. If you
have any questions please contact Mrs.
Rosanne Guice at 327-2578 x191.
**Freshmen & Sophomore Parents –
The Service Hours Program is slightly
different for your students. Freshmen and
Sophomores will only be working on service
hours for Garces and Parish. A service
learning component will be added their
junior year through Theology classes.
STUDENT RETREATS
Listed below are the retreats for the school year 2013 - 2014. Retreats are a wonderful opportunity for the students to get away and spend
quality time reflecting on their relationship with God and others. The freshmen and sophomore retreats are mandatory and will involve the
whole class. The junior and senior retreats are held overnight and are available to all students. More information, cost and registration for
these retreats will be available in September.
Freshmen Retreat – Friday, September 13
Sophomore Retreat – Tuesday, November26
Kairos Retreat for Juniors and Seniors - October 16-18, 2013, and March 5-7, 2014.

As we start the new school year, plans are being made for the spiritual activities for the year. Once again,
as last year, Mass will be offered every school day at 7:20 AM in the St. Dominic Chapel. There are some
built in variations to this schedule. In the fall during football season, the team Masses on Thursday and
Friday are at 7:00 AM. If there is a scheduled faculty meeting, Mass is at 7:30 AM. Please check the school calender for these
exceptions.
We will start the school year again with the class Masses during the first week of school. These are an important way for the students to share their faith and grow as the family. The All School Mass of the Holy Spirit will be on September 11. Bishop Ochoa
is scheduled to be the principal celebrant.
The usual opportunities of reconciliation for both the fall and spring semester and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament are also
being planned and scheduled.

The start of a new school year is always an
exciting time. This year, the first two months of
school offer many opportunities to get involved,
and all students and parents are encouraged to
participate.
The following is a list of activities during this
time: Aloha Dance- August 24th; Freshmen
Election Packets – Listen for announcements;
Holy Bowl Rally – September 20th (Night

Homecoming Week October 27th.
Homecoming week is a great way to show your
class and school spirit. On Sunday, October 27th
we will start decorating the floats at 2:00 P.M. and
work until dusk. So that we might get most of
the work done that day, parents are encouraged

be asking local businesses for donations of wood,
paint and any other items you will be planning to
use on your class float.
During the first quarter of the 2013-2014 school
year the Student Council will be meeting during
the Leadership class period and also twice a
week during lunch until Homecoming Week.
The Student Council would like to encourage
all members of the student body at GMHS, to

To foster the integration of families into the life of

To provide a forum of exchange for parents/guardians on matters of mutual interest.
I encourage all parents to get involved in some way with
Garces and GPC is a great way to do it! Membership in
GPC is open to all parents/guardians of a current GMHS student. GPC is a good way to earn school service hours and
be involved in your child’s campus life. All of our meetings
are not scheduled yet for the coming year, but we plan to
have a meeting every other month. Most of the meetings
will feature a speaker on various topics that concern us as
parents. The first meeting this year is August 21 in the
Board Room in the Administrative building. Watch your
email for GPC announcements and dates.
If you have any questions or want to get involved, please
call me at 979-1456 or email at [email protected].
Once again, welcome and I look forward to seeing you at
the meeting on August 21.
Thank you for your support!
