Page 13 August/September 2012 Letter from the President John Fanucchi '68, President [email protected] On behalf of the administration, faculty and staff of Garces Memorial High School, I want to take this opportunity to welcome you to academic year 2012-2013. The Mission Statement of the school clearly defines who we are and what we stand for: “Garces Memorial High School is a Catholic, coeducational college preparatory high school. Our school educates youth to fulfill the mission of Jesus Christ by developing students spiritually, intellectually, and socially. Our mission calls us to instill in every member of the Garces Memorial community respect, integrity, compassion, and courage of faith.” With a mission and philosophy based on the teachings and traditions of our Catholic faith, and under the direction of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fresno, we at Garces Memorial are commissioned to create a setting where positive decision-making is being fostered in a Christian environment…where our students are taught not only to worship and pray, but more importantly how to worship and pray; where our students are taught not only to reason and think critically, but more importantly how to reason and think critically; where our students are taught not only the importance and necessity of serving the community through their efforts, but more importantly are directed, encouraged, and shown how to do just that. Studies have shown that the most effective method of education is one that combines the involvement of a dedicated, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic school community with equally enthusiastic and dedicated family support. Our School Philosophy clearly states that we work “in partnership with” you, our parents and guardians, in this effort. Whether you are the parent/guardian of a returning student, a transfer student, or a freshman student – whether your involvement with Garces Memorial is lengthy or relatively new – we look forward with much anticipation and excitement to working with you to make this year a truly memorable and productive one. There are many diverse ways for you to get involved. We encourage you to attend any or all of our many religious, social, extra-curricular, or athletic events held on campus. We encourage your attendance and support at our various fund-raising and fun-raising events held throughout the year. The first of these events Continued on Page 3 From the Desk of the Principal Kathleen B. Bears, Principal [email protected] “A man of courage is also full of faith.” - Marcus Tullius Cicero "Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgment that something else is more important than fear." - Ambrose Redmoon I hope that your summer has been both a rewarding and relaxing one. Although the official start of our new school year is still a couple of weeks away, please let me be one of the first to extend a warm “welcome” to our incoming freshman and their families and a hearty “welcome back” to all the other members of our extended Garces family. As Principal of Garces Memorial High School, I want to thank you for making the careful choice and financial sacrifice to send your sons and daughters to Garces Memorial High School, one of the top, if not the best college preparatory high schools in Kern County. At Garces, we want to continue to earn your respect and trust as Catholic educators by exhibiting respect, integrity, compassion, and Courage of Faith in all our actions. Whether we follow popular opinion or not, you can be assured that we will consistently honor Continued on Page 8 Second Semester Honor Roll 2011-2012 3.5 GPA & Above Class of 2012 Haley Abrams Ashley Alvarez Matthew Austin Nicole Bayne Joseph Bedard Morgan Bell Kayla Bernardino Ann Berry Riley Boylan Gabriel Buenviaje Julian Bugnosen Kenneth Camaclang Dominic Carlson Seth Champness Cara Clayton Alexandra Cody Michael Coppola Megan Cullor Ashley Datinguinoo Taylor DeBoer Carl Demler Alexis Dodenhoff Karanpreet Dosanjh Jasmine Dosanjh Barbara Duran Katherine Ebel James Ehteshami Catherine Evans Patrick Farley Jaime Force Brian Fox TG Galario Katherine Greene Rocio Guerrero Margarito Guzman Farah Hasta Darian Hensen DongJu Hwang Jin Seok Kim Hyewon Kim Zachary Kloock Christina Lee Logan Lirette Samantha Lombardo Kenneth Lopez Andrew Louden Madeline Lundy Connor Lynn Hannah Martin Laura Meert Julia Miller Emily Moore Sabrina Parlan www.garces.org Charles Paulsen Griffin Riley Anthony Rinaldi Sandra Rodriguez Vanessa Romero Paloma Rosales Sarah Ruiz Jessica Samson Alexandra Scott Nicholas Shelton Paige Smith Erica Solum Michael Soper Stephanie Stier Gabrielle Strasser Kaitlin Swift Daniel Taylor Edgar Tovar Zoe Tucker Morgan Turner Katherine Vandborg Megan Varga Justin Verrell Tammy Vu Samantha Zavala Class of 2013 Allison Almaraz Margaret Arriola Madeline Atchison Shanygne Baltao Braden Bautista Brock Burger Lauren Cholakian Eliza Day Heather Domingo Simran Dosanjh Michael Duran Madeline Ebel Jacob Elliott Conrad Esch Mason Etcheverry Joie Garcia Breanna Gonzalez Lauren Graham Felicia Hasta Caleb Hawkesworth Melissa Hernandez Crimson Hochhalter Jacob Hoffman Nicklaus Houston Gary Hubl Tyler Hutchison Bryanna Insley Grace Jacobs Kevin Kim Mariela Kinn Frances Klingenberger Victoria Kovacevich Luminne Lavilla Yuxuan Li Christina Ling Olivia Lipco Callie Luttrell William Naworski Thomas Newman Teresa Nowatzki Keely Palla Mary Paquette Natalie Pardo Alexander Rinaldi Kristine Riola Aleseya Romanov Jacqueline Root Christian Sanders Ivan Sandoval Anne Shambaugh Mark Steele Thomas Stevenson Pia Sumineg Jacob Sweaney Cassidy Swift James Taylor Brooke Terrio John Thomson Julieta Tovmasyan Rachel Whynot Morgan Wilkins Madison Williams Chandler Wright Class of 2014 Alyssa Alvarez Shea Andrew Claire Anspach Teren Bangi Tristen Bangi Jamie Kristen Barnhill Nicholas Burger Chad Campbell Alexandra Campos Dominique Campos Ali Champness Cameron DeBoer Katherine Deming Satinder Dhindsa Harjot Dosanjh Anthony Echeverria Julie Elizagoyen John Evans Andrew Farr Justin Gapper Seth Garza Kathryn Giggy Jagjeet Gill Sarah Grimes Paige Gruszka Kate Hamilton Jonathan Hernandez Samantha Highfield Collin Jamieson Bo Kyung Kim Hyein Kim Ga Yeon Kim Sara Klang Elizabeth Kloock Patrick Kolodji Lea Lavilla Emily Leyva Andrea Loreto Stephanie Lugo Jack Lundy Ivana Martinez Rachael Metzger Rikkie Meyeres Murielle Morales Jaclyn Morris Francisco Ojeda Bettina Marie Pasamba Jacob Pavletich Julianna Perez Ryan Recicar Joseph Roach Alexandria Rodriguez Mariana Roldan Joseph Salvucci Carol Sandoval Da Yea Shim Brooke Shumate Becky Siharath Sean Smith Lauren Smith Jacob Stuart Caroline Tague Madison Todd Haley Witt Camille Wood Ryan Young Continued on Page 3 Second Semester Honor Roll Continued Class of 2015 Mark Anthony Albandia Trey Alderete Joseph Antongiovanni Nicoleta Apperti Amanda Armstrong Logan Aspeitia Domenique Barnes Samuel Birchfield Ryan Bonas Zachary Boone Bridget Boylan Gurleen Brar Adrianna Buenviaje Blair Burkhart Hyun Jung Cha Marco Chipres Francesca Darquea Erica Delgado Amandeep Dhaliwal Nathan Esch Allen Eschete Lilyana Espinoza Maria Etcheverry Mazzie Ferguson Jacqueline Flores Moriah Franco Haley Garrison Sydney Garza Samuel Gutierrez Maveric Guzman Kyle Haffermann Juan Hernandez Andrew Hoang Rachel Hoover Sara Hudson Abby Hulsey Elizabeth Jamison Mina Kim Kyle Klingenberger Hawk Kolodji Ty Layer Mateo Lopez Miguel Loreto Peter Louden Tehnad Mangat Althea Martinez Abaigeal McCormick Allyssa Mendez Kylie Minor Oriana Montiel Katherine Morton Natalie Moss Yolanda Navarro Lyndsey Naworski Victoria Nguyen Alexander Ortiz Matt Pandol Natalie Pandol Ashley Pascual Samuel Perez Santos Perez Made Prasadha Sterling Riley Amanda Rodriguez Kendall Rudie Nanette Schweitzer Renee Senining John Soper Matthew Staugaard Shelby Stewart Jenna Storey Sonia Talamantes Samantha Thomas Samuel Tobias Stephanie Torres Emily Tovar Kelsey Turner Kathryn VanderPoel Victoria Vargas Luke Vazquez Alexis Villanueva Jae Woong Yoon Jewelee Zaninovich Let us remember that we are in the Holy presence of God. And of course, your participation in our Parent-Student Involvement (P.S.I.) program is a wonderful way for you to support your children and the school. It takes many individuals and groups to assure the success of our school. One of those very important and critical groups is our Garces Memorial High School Board of Directors. Under the leadership of our Rector, Monsignor Michael Braun, and the direction of Mr. Dan Giordano ’66, our Board Chairman, our Board continues to serve as a driving force behind the success of our school. Other Board members include Dr. Tom Berry, Mr. Steve Del Papa, Mrs. Elaine Jamison, Mr. Ray Karpe ’83, Mr. Bernie LeBeau, Mr. Greg Petrini '85, Mrs. Dianne Riley ’73, Mr. John Szewczyk, and Mrs. Lonie Wattenbarger. The Board of Directors functions as a body made up of committees and sub-committees which address the various needs/concerns of the school. If you wish to find out more about our Board of Directors and/or our various committees, you may contact me at (661) 327-2578, ext. 116, or by email at [email protected]. And finally, I want to thank you parents, grandparents, and guardians for your commitment and dedication to Garces Memorial. Your gifts of time, expertise, resources, and prayers are a real blessing to our school and are so very appreciated by all associated with the school. We could not be successful without each and every one of you. I want to thank you for entrusting in us the awesome responsibility of your child’s high school education. We have been working tirelessly to assure you and your students that this will truly be a valuable, productive, and special year. We look forward to the up-coming year with excitement and anticipation. We feel blessed and honored to be given the opportunity to work with and for such fine people as you and your children. I look forward to seeing you at our many gatherings and social events. I look forward to meeting and speaking with you personally. If you ever wish to contact me, for any reason, I may be reached at (661) 327-2578, ext. 116 or by email at [email protected]. Thank you! God bless you! God bless Garces Memorial High School! COURAGE OF FAITH The Garces Memorial Student is a person whose faith in God is living conscious and active. The student acts willingly on his/her convictions no matter what the cost or sacrifice. 3 Important Academic Information I am very grateful to Monsignor Braun, the school board, and the administration of Garces Memorial for the opportunity to work with you, the parents, in raising your sons and daughters to be children of God. It is with unparalleled enthusiasm that I look forward to serving another Academic Year as Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs. For those of you who are new to Garces I would like to share a little about my background. I am a product of private, Catholic education. I attended K-8th at Our Lady of Perpetual Help School in Downey, California, before entering Loyola High School in Los Angeles. I graduated from Claremont McKenna College with a B.A. in History and from Point Loma Nazarene University with an M.A. in the field of Education Administration. This will be my 17th year in education, all of them at Garces. I am committed to one goal for every one of your sons and daughters and that is to provide a supportive learning environment where the mission of the school can be fulfilled. My office is just across from the attendance desk in the Administration building and my phone number is 327-2578 ext. 110. Please feel free to contact me for any reason. HONOR ROLL Congratulations to all students listed on the Honor Roll for the second semester of Academic Year 2011-2012. Keep up the good work. IMPORTANT NOTE FOR SENIORS AND THEIR PARENTS In order to participate in all graduation events (Baccalaureate Mass and the Graduation Ceremony) seniors must pass all first and second semester courses with a grade of D- or better and must complete all required service hours by the printed deadline. Please refer to the Student Handbook for clarification under “Graduation Requirements”. Mike Susank Assistant Principal for Academic Affairs [email protected] SCHEDULE CHANGES Every year at the start of school, a handful of students revise their academic plans and desire schedule changes. All schedule changes require parent approval. Schedule changes will be processed through the Counseling office and will be addressed in order of need beginning at break on Monday, August 20th. If you have any questions please feel free to contact my office at extension 110. SUMMER SCHOOL All students who indicated that they were taking summer school classes at Garces, Bakersfield College or other approved institutions should have turned in a completed Summer School Contract to their counselor prior to the beginning of the summer session. This contract was used in planning the student’s course selections for the current academic year. Failure to submit the contract may have resulted in an incorrect schedule. Students who attended summer school outside of Garces Memorial MUST make arrangements to have an official transcript sent to Garces before they may receive credit for any course. ADD/DROP Please note the last day to Add/Drop Classes for the first semester is Friday, September 7th. All schedule changes are expected to be submitted by this date. BACK TO SCHOOL NIGHT Mark your calendars for Back to School night on Wednesday, August 29th. Please come and meet your student’s teachers. Important information will be shared. Continued on Page11 Dean’s Notes We would like to thank you, the parents, for the opportunity to help mold your sons and daughters to be Children of God. Our goal this year is to provide for your daughters and sons a safe and supportive learning environment where the mission of the school can be fulfilled. Even though you will be receiving a 2012-2013 Student Handbook soon, we would like to highlight a couple of important areas so your child will successfully begin and continue through the upcoming school year. Student Handbook The 2012-2013 Student Handbook and Planner will be given to students at the mandatory Orientation Day in August. Students will be expected to familiarize themselves with the school policies, schedules, programs, and calendar and sign a form letter (Page 1 of the Handbook) attesting to this understanding by the first day of classes (August 17th). Parents will be given their own copy at the Mandatory Parent Meeting/Back to School Night on Wednesday, August 29th. Dress and Grooming Code We wish to thank you parents for the incredible sacrifices that you make to get your sons and daughters to school looking like college preparatory students. We also wish to assure you parents that we will enforce the dress code as it has been written. The Dress Code has been reviewed and approved by administrators, faculty, staff, parents and students. Our uniform company has assured us that they can fit every body type. All we ask is that parents work with us and Norman’s Uniforms to explore all options. Please contact us as soon as possible if you are experiencing difficulties, so that we will know before your student receives a detention.\ Change in Dress Code Policy: Please impress upon your daughters that the hemlines on skirts must always be within 5 inches of the top of the knee (measurement is made while standing). Girls with skirts not adhering to this length must accept the possibility that they may receive a JUG for a first offense. Repeat offenses will result in individual girls losing the privilege of wearing skirts for the remainder of the semester. Shorts should be mid-thigh or no higher than 6 inches above the knee. Please impress upon your sons to make it their responsibility to keep their hair trimmed to the school expectations. Shaving each day for some is a must. If a student is in need of a shave, he will be expected to shave using a disposable razor provided in the office for $1.00 and a JUG will be issued. Please encourage your sons to shave daily. As a reminder to all students, NO boots, moccasins or slippers of any kind are acceptable footwear and are not allowed as part of the uniform. Any family who, because of financial hardship, is struggling to get their students fitted for this year should also contact the Dean’s Office as soon as possible. Please refer to the Dress Code for Dances which can be found in the Parent Student Handbook. Chaplain [email protected] As we start a new year, there are many changes that are in the process of being put in place. The first change will be the time for Daily Mass. Mass will now be celebrated at 7:20 AM on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday in the fall. On Thursday and Friday the football team Masses will be at 7:00 AM. Then after the conclusion of the football season all the Daily Masses will be at 7:20 AM. It is my hope that parents and students can thus share in this most significant expression of faith. The second change is that when the student/parent handbook is passed out at the start of the school year, the dates for Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and Reconciliation are given in the school calendar so that plans can be made. Thirdly, the theme for the coming school year is Courage of Faith. In this context we will have a guest speaker, Rev. Greg Boyle, S.J. at the beginning of March who demonstrates this every day in his work. Finally, the Mass of the Holy Spirit will be celebrated on September 12 by Bishop Ochoa. We are looking forward to having him on our campus and his sharing with us. www.garces.org Counseling Report Debra Sakowski Director of Counseling [email protected] The Counseling Department would like to welcome the incoming freshmen class. It is by our demonstrated actions in living the Garces Philosophy every day and our partnering with our parents that differentiates us from other schools throughout the Bakersfield area. For those parents who have or have had a son or daughter previously at Garces, you probably already know the intent of my highlighting Courage of Faith. Throughout the 2012-2013 school year, “Courage of Faith: Act willingly on convictions, no matter what the cost or sacrifice, with a faith in God that is living, conscious, and active.” will be the principle theme that we will be emphasizing with your students. Our Philosophy at Garces is to instill in every member of the Garces Memorial community respect, integrity, compassion, and courage of faith. Our faculty, staff and administration continue to work to build upon and improve the overall educational package Garces has to offer. We will constantly encourage each student to show courage of faith so as to continue to grow the nurturing environment at Garces where students develop spiritually, intellectually, and socially, and which enables them to recognize their potential as People of God. Garces has been blessed this year in that Fr. Gregory Boyle, author of Tattoos on the Heart: The Power of Boundless Compassion has agreed to speak to our students in March. In anticipation of his visit, and in exploring our theme, Courage of Faith, during the first semester, all faculty and students will read and discuss Fr. Boyle’s book. We look forward to Fr. Boyle sharing with us his experiences about what it means to be human, to seek the goodness within ourselves and everyone and everything around us. As with his book, it will be thoroughly entertaining, instructional, thought-provoking, inspirational and faith-restoring for us all. I would be remiss not to again thank everyone for your past support and feedback. It is your support and constructive feedback that makes Garces so successful and the envy of every other school in Kern County. I also look forward to the continuation of the same in the future, with the chance to chat and to hear from every member of our Garces family, whether it’s at school, or at one of our many after school activities or just through a simple phone call or e-mail note. I need to know your thoughts on what we are doing right and just as importantly where we can improve. Our overall enrollment will be down slightly this fall as we all continue to feel the impact of the serious economic downturn that has gripped California and the entire United States. While Garces will greatly miss those families who will be leaving us, we also want to extend a warm Garces family welcome to those families who are transferring in from other high schools. We appreciate your faith in us and despite the prolonged difficult economic environment, we will strive to provide the same high level of education and service that every member of the Garces family both desires and deserves. Again this year, I am very pleased to say that no school programs or activities are planned for reduction or elimination. What truly make Garces so great and successful year in and year out is our exceptional parents and their generous efforts in providing assistance for our school, our teachers, coaches, staff and students. Your efforts go well beyond those expected and necessary in support of the educational goals and objectives that have or will allow your students to succeed, and well beyond those efforts requested through our PSI program in support of our many school related activities. As I have said before and will continue to repeat to the point of excess, it is the generosity of each of our parents and the Garces family, in sharing your resources and time that continues to make Garces the envy of every other school in Kern County and beyond, even north to our sister school in Fresno. Your generosity of time and effort has become legendary to the point of jealousy and discomfort for other schools, especially when attending one of the many events hosted by the Garces faculty, our outstanding coaches and our parents. It is a “real” team effort. That’s just the way Garces parents are. They do not have to, they want to and do. For those of you new to Garces and also for those returning, two groups which energetically support Garces student activities are our Booster Club and Parent Club. The Booster Club has kicked off its membership drive for the school year. As a member you can get a yard sign, like the one we have displayed in our front yard to show all our neighbors that “Ram Pride Lives Here”. It has also been great fun to attend the informal fall and spring social get-togethers hosted by the Parent Club. It was wine from around the world in the fall served by your very own Garces Administrative team, and who wouldn’t agree that Italian wines are best served by our President John Fanucchi. And you do not want to miss those Margaritas and munchies on the quad in the spring. I want to thank both groups in advance for their continued overwhelming support of Garces Memorial High School. In closing, I look forward to what should be both a challenging but also exciting new school year. Garces Award Seth Champness Academic Information continued from Page 4 All SCHOOL AWARDS The Outstanding Academic Achievement awards for the 2011-12 school year will be announced on Friday, September 14th during a special assembly in Monsignor Leddy Hall. We time this event in September for two reasons. In determining our award candidates, we use the academic grades from both first and second semester of last year (which are only available after the school year ends) and we also wish to start the year giving students goals to which they can aspire in the coming year. ONLINE ACCESS TO GRADE INFORMATION FOR PARENTS AND STUDENTS Parents and Students can access up-to-the-minute grades from any networked computer through NetClassroom. Students and parents can contact their counselor for login information. New parents should plan to receive login information at Back to School Night on August 29th. Visit the school Website at www.garces.org and click on the NetClassroom link to access this valuable link to your child’s progress. ON-LINE REPORT CARDS We wish to further speed the reporting of student grades to parents. With that in mind, progress reports and quarter report cards will be posted on line through NetClassroom three school days after each grading period ends. Semester Report cards are the ONLY report cards we plan to mail home. You can expect to see semester grades in the mail in January and June, at the conclusion of each semester. Online grades will post September 26th (progress report), October 31st(quarter grades used for athletic eligibility), November 28th (progress report), and January 9th(semester grade also used for athletic eligibility). In the second semester, grades will post online February 13th (progress report), March 20th (quarter grades used for athletic eligibility), April 24th (progress report), and June 5th (semester grade also used for athletic eligibility). Parents MUST have their NetClassroom access code in order to view these grades online. To View the Report Card (once they have been posted), login to NetClassroom and select the “Students” tab. Select “Report Card”. Please note, pop-ups MUST be allowed in order to view the report card. If you have any questions, please contact me (Ext. 110) or Mr. Doug Dill, at extension 113. HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS AND COURSE EXPECTATIONS The Garces Website provides parents with instant access to their child’s daily homework assignments as well as course expectations (Green Sheets) for each of their classes. Each teacher has a homepage through the Garces website (www.garces.org). Homework assignments are to be posted by 4 PM each day for each class. The Green Sheets are distributed to all students in class on the first day of school but are also posted on each teacher’s web page. Please download this information and keep it for reference. 11 Dean’s Notes continued... (From Page 4) Attendance Mrs. Sherry Hylton does a wonderful job of keeping track of our students as the Attendance Clerk. Any attendance questions, suggestions, or concerns can be directed to her at 327-2579. In the event that your student is going to be absent from school, please call the attendance line (327-2579) prior to 9:15 A.M. each day of the absence. If a parent does not clear the absence, first by calling and then by returning the absentee form, the student may be given after school detention. Please note that because of the Block Schedule, students will lose credit for any classes where they miss an excessive number of class meetings (as determined by the Principal) in one semester. Please refer to the exact policies and appeal procedures in the 2012-2013 Student Handbook. Off-Campus Passes In the event that an appointment cannot be scheduled outside of school hours, students will be released to Doctor or Dentist visits only with a written release from a parent or guardian. A phone call is certainly appreciated but it is not sufficient, by itself, to excuse a student from campus. Please help us in our efforts to ensure the safety of our students traveling to these appointments by sending or faxing a note in advance of the appointment to the office. Upon return to school, a doctor’s notice must be presented to the Attendance Clerk in order for the absence to be marked EXCUSED. Transportation and Parking All students are expected to park in the student parking lot. The cost of a parking permit is $20.00 for the year and the necessary paperwork is available in the Business Office. Parents and guardians who drive their students to school are requested to drop off and pick up students in the main (front) parking lot on Loma Linda Drive. Student pick up and drop off will not be allowed in the student parking lot. Parent Club Corner Welcome to the 2012-2013 school year! My name is Caryl Schweitzer and I am serving as president of the Garces Parent Club (GPC) this year. Last year was my first year as a Garces parent and the year went by very quickly. I encourage all parents to get involved in some way with the school and GPC is a great way to do it! We support our school and our students while enjoying fun and camaraderie. The Parent Club Board for 2012-2013 is: President - Caryl Schweitzer Vice-President - Michelle Watson Secretary - Susan Eschete Treasurer - Sandra Vasquez Senior Class Representatives - Sydney Klingenberger, Judy Hubel, Carol Naworski, and Patsy Ebel Junior Class Representatives - Mary Kay Hammans and Linda Witt Sophomore Class Representatives- Vivanna Molina-Lopez, Irma Bonas, and Sandy Tucker Freshman Class Representative - Susie Aspeitia Hospitality Chairperson - Debbie Patrick-Wahl Hospitality Committee - Joe Munoz, Stephanie Martinez, La Dean Mata, Jeanne Antongiavanni, Kathleen Smith, and Kimberly and Alfredo Saldana GPC has four main goals: - To enlist the spiritual, educational and social resources of the home and school to provide the best Catholic education possible www.garces.org Electronic Devices Change in Policy for Cell Phone Usage: To assist parents and students in daily communication, students may use cell phones before school, at break, during lunch, and after school. However, cell phones may not be used in the classrooms, locker rooms, or library at any time. The use of the camera feature of the cell phone is not allowed on campus. I-pods, recorders, or other electronic devices (calculators excluded, of course) are prohibited on campus. This new policy is a privilege for students. First offense violation of this rule will result in confiscation of the phone and two JUGs. A second offense violation will result in a $25 fine, along with confiscation of the cell phone and two JUGs. Additional offenses will require a parent conference. Please do not call or text your children during class time. If an emergency occurs, please call the office or the attendance desk and we will immediately bring your child to the office so that he/she may contact you in private. During class time, if a student needs to make an emergency phone call, he/ she will be allowed to use a private line in the Administration Offices. Any electronic item that becomes a distraction on campus, even during break or lunch, will be confiscated and will only be returned to the parent/guardian. The student will also be called upon to serve an appropriate detention. Please assist us in maintaining a safe and secure campus environment by limiting the use of these devices. In addition to detracting from the learning environment, these very expensive items have also proven to be a tempting target for thieves. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and support. By Caryl Schweitzer 2012-2013 Parent Club President - To promote a broader appreciation of the mission, goals, and ideals of Catholic education - To foster the integration of families into the life of the school community - To provide a forum of exchange for parents/guardians on matters of mutual interest. Membership in the GPC is open to all parents/guardians of a current GMHS student. We also have a wonderful subcommittee of GPC, called the Campus Spiritual Support Group (CSSG) that has a special focus on the spiritual growth of our students and the Garces community. GPC is a wonderful way to earn school service hours and be involved in your child’s campus life. Volunteering is fun and fulfilling, as well as being a great example to our children. We need parent support from every grade level. New members are always welcome. GPC meets four times a year on campus in the Library at 5:30 p.m. The first meeting this year is August 22. Watch your email for announcements of meetings, Masses and other fun activities sponsored by the GPC. If you have any questions or want to get involved, please call me at 979-1456 or email at caryl.schweitzer@dignityhealth. org. Once again, welcome and I look forward to seeing you at the meeting on August 22. Thank you for your support!
