Letter from the President
John Fanucchi '68, President
[email protected]
As we come to the conclusion of
this year’s Annual Fund Drive, I continue to
humbly ask for your support of this very important effort. Every penny earned is directed toward the needs of the school, especially
in the areas of financial aid/tuition assistance
for those in need, faculty/staff retention and
growth, grounds/facilities improvements,
and continued improvement/growth of our
spiritual, academic, and extracurricular programs.
You recently received a letter which
included a brochure explaining the specifics
and importance of the Drive and a remittance
envelope. If you are able to contribute and
have decided on an amount, you may simply
fill out the form and mail it to Garces with
your gift. You may also contribute on-line by
going to our website, www.garces.org, go to
Supporting Garces on the top menu bar, and
on the drop-down bar, go to On Line Donations. If you have misplaced the letter or if
you have questions and/or concerns about the
Drive, please do not hesitate to contact me.
My telephone number at school is (661) 3272578, ext. 116. My email address is [email protected].
My goal is to have 100% of our
families contribute to this effort. I simply ask that you be as generous and supportive as you can while giving within
your means. And I want to remind you
that a contribution to the Annual Fund
Drive can and will be credited to your
P.S.I. hours, with a $300 contribution
fulfilling all hours. If you have already
contributed to this year’s Drive, thank
you so very much from the students and
staff for your contribution.
Working and giving together, we
can make this Drive a resounding success! Thank you for entrusting us with
the spiritual, academic, and social development and growth of our students. God
bless you for everything you do. I look
forward to hearing from you soon.
I want to thank those individuals
who dedicated so much time, effort, and
pride into making the 34th Garces Gala
the memorable and hugely successful
event that it was. I want to thank all of
you who had an opportunity to attend
the formal night and/or casual night gacontinued on page 3
From the Principal's Desk
People laughed at us for using the word
magical. But you know what? It turned
out to be magical.
Steve Jobs - Apple CEO on the iPad
The iPad could eventually become your
TV, your newspaper and your bookshelf.
Daniel Lyons - Newsweek Magazine
Magical and Garces are two words that just seem to
fit together very well. Whether it is in the classroom,
on the athletic field or in the community, the Garces
spirit is truly magical. As I am sure you have
already heard, beginning next fall Garces will be the
first school in Kern County to fully implement and use
this leading edge technology and learning tool in the
classroom by assigning every student an iPad. With

the iPad, each student will have access to interactive
electronic books and can take notes and also download, complete and submit their homework assignments directly from their iPads. I want to especially
thank our iPad Implementation Team Members, Mr.
Guy Dees and Mr. Doug Dill who have been
working with the faculty on planning and training for
the school wide roll-out and Mr. Mike Susank and
Mrs. Lauren Mawson who have been working
with our faculty on course books and apps. And perhaps magical could also be applied to Coach Dees
and his ability or is it his patience in teaching even me
to be able to make use of iTunes U and how to create
our own custom courses for iPad and then teach them
in the classroom.

Principal . . .
I want to thank all those who so graciously contributed to our special needs request this year at both
Gala events in support of our 2013 iPad student
implementation program and the purchase of iPads for our faculty. Both evening events seemed
to be enjoyed by all who attended. My sincere
thank you goes out to all involved and especially
Ms Tonya Abbott and her Formal and Casual
Gala Night chairpersons. These two social events
along with our Fall Barbecue and Spring Golf
Event serve as our principal fundraising efforts to
further support and provide for all the many yearly
operating costs Garces incurs, from utilities and
our grounds and facilities maintenance to classroom supplies and technology replacements and
upgrades to staff salaries and training, all important ongoing expenses in maintaining the high
level of education that one expects and deserves
with a Garces education.
Another event which just gets better and better
every year is the Garces Sound Jazz/Percussion Dinner Concert. If you were not
able to attend this in late March, please make
sure you mark it on your calendar as one of your
“must not miss” events for 2014. The music
performances by our students were great, you
would have thought Louis Armstrong Gene Krupa,
Buddy Rich, Benny Goodman were all there and
the dinner prepared by the chefs from Bakersfield
College was fantastic, all in all it was a lovely evening coordinated by Ms. Margaret Smith and
her many parent volunteers. Mr. Scott Smith
and Mr. Chilli Ortega have built a superior
music program at Garces and have assisted in
the implementation of music programs in all our
Catholic feeder schools. At the concert, we got
Continued from Page 1
a sneak preview of the new Music Building that will
break ground on campus west of Monsignor Leddy
Hall later this spring. If all goes well, our students
and those from OLPH will have a new home for music
classes this fall.
Please also join me in recognizing and congratulating the Garces Academic Decathlon Team
and their moderator, Mrs. Crystal Huddleston
and the Mock Trial Team and their moderator Mr.
Bill Leheny on another great year.
Magical moments for our Garces student athletes
also occurred on the pitch, on the court and on the
diamond. Our Girls Soccer Team, coached by Ms.
Myka Peck, won the Division 2 Valley Championship on a raucous night on our own Sam Tobias
field. Both our Boys and Girls Basketball Teams had
another impressive year with both teams making
the trip to Fresno’s Selland Arena and finishing the
year as runners-up for the Division 2 Valley Title. Our
Garces Baseball team started their season by beating Stockdale High for the first time ever not once but
twice in claiming the Terrio Baseball Classic. As the
weather continues to grow warmer and the days longer, please come out and join me as we cheer on and
wish the best of luck to our outstanding baseball, softball, swimming and track teams. Garces Memorial’s
long tradition of excellence, fair play and outstanding
efforts continues through the amazing spirit, desire
and determination of each of our student athletes and
their coaches.
I wanted to pass along a bit of good news our Communications Director, Ms. Lou Ann Durrett heard
from the Bakersfield Californian. Garces has either
been chosen "Best Of" or "Favorite" for “Best Private
School” in the 2013 Reader’s Poll. We should find

out this year’s recognition for Garces by the community in the April 27th edition of Bakersfield Life.
Again this year it is my honor and pleasure to be
able to report to you that our current students continue to follow the lead of our prior graduates and
excel in their academics. You, the parents and
grandparents, have a great deal of which to be
proud. We the Garces faculty and administration
are very grateful to all of you for your ongoing support and confidence in us and are only successful
through our partnership with you to provide a quality
Catholic education for your students. It is with your
continued help and support that we are able to be
successful in helping them grow spiritually, intellectually and socially.
Soon it will be time for our current senior class of
2013 to leave us and continue their education and
growth beyond Garces. I am very pleased to announce that Father Dan Coyle will be the homilist at this year’s Baccalaureate. Every member of
our Garces faculty and staff wants to congratulate
and commend our seniors for their exemplary efforts over their past four years. We continue to see
an exceptionally high number of our students being accepted at numerous colleges and universities
throughout California and the United States.
In closing, although summer and vacation fun is just
around the corner, we are still in school and ask that
you assist our students to continue to maintain excellent attendance and come to class well prepared
and finish the year just as strong as they started it.
God bless you, your sons and daughters and your
entire family this day, and every day.
Financial Obligation (Tuition)
Contract & Yearly Catholic
Verification Form
A new Financial Obligation Contract will
be mailed to all families in March along
with their billing statement. In addition, all
families will receive a Smart Tuition Enrollment form. All tuition for next year will be
billed by Smart Tuition and payments are to
be made directly to them. Both forms must
be completed and returned to the Business
Office no later than May 1, 2013. No student will be issued an iPad or be allowed
to begin the academic year without a completed contract and enrollment form on file.
Note that the first tuition payment is due on
July 1, 2013 and will be subject to late fees
if not paid by July 5.

las. They were successful because of your
generosity and support. A special “thankyou” goes to Donna Anspach and Tianna
Lundy for co-chairing the Formal evening
for the second year in a row!
Our next major fund/fun raising
event will be the Monsignor Leddy Golf
Classic, which will take place on Friday,
June 14, 2013. If you are interested in
playing in this event, supporting the event
as a sponsor, or simply finding out more
about the event, please contact Tonya Abbott at (661) 327-2578, ext. 118. A huge
thank-you also goes to those individuals
who are working diligently to make this
year’s event a resounding success.
I want to thank you, our parents,
guardians, and families, who have entrusted in us the awesome responsibility

of assisting you in the education of your
children. For those of you who have students returning in the fall, we look forward
to continuing to serve you and working in
collaboration with you in the development
of your children as they mature spiritually, intellectually, and socially…as they
continue to mature as young women and
men of respect, integrity, compassion, and
courage of faith. For those of you who do
not have a student returning in the fall, I
want to thank you for entrusting to us the
responsibility of guiding your fine students
through their high school experience, and
for allowing us the honor and privilege of
being a part of your lives. I pray that their
journeys are productive and safe, that their
dreams and your dreams become realities.
I ask you to remain an active member of

Spring All School ACT Testing
On Thursday, April 4th, an ACT practice will be
administered to all non-Senior students. Garces
Memorial High School is the only school in Kern
County that provides practice test experiences for
both the SAT and ACT exams. The SAT practice took
place in October. On April 4, Freshman, Sophomore,
and Junior students will be sitting for practice ACT
experiences. Freshman will take the EXPLORE test,
Sophomores the PLAN, and Juniors, a practice ACT.
The cafeteria will be open that day for lunch beginning
at 11:15. Periods 2, 4, and 6 will meet for all students
in 45 minute class periods with dismissal at 2:30 pm
and Collaboration will follow. Seniors are expected on
campus at 12 Noon. With only ten class meetings in
each subject after that day before AP exams and only
fourteen class meetings until graduation, no senior
can afford to miss this school day.
Commencement Preparations
As graduation approaches a Mandatory Senior/
Parent Meeting will be held in Msgr. Leddy Hall on
April 4th at 7:00 P.M. At least one parent and their
graduating senior must attend. Topics will include
Academic and Service Hour Requirements for
Graduation, Cap/Gown distribution, Baccalaureate
Mass, Commencement Ceremonies, GradNight,
and other important information for seniors and
their parents.
May you have a restful and joyous summer. God bless you all. May God
continue to bless Garces Memorial High
School.
– Always A Ram!
Recognition
As the academic year of 2012-2013 draws to a
close there are so many individuals in the Garces
Memorial faith community who are deserving of
recognition. I would like to take this opportunity to
express my gratitude to the many fine students at
Garces Memorial and I specifically commend the
Class of 2013 for their faith development, academic
efforts, and for the many activities in which they were
involved that enhanced the image and visibility of
the school.
And finally, as we conclude Easter
season, may it continue to be a wonderful and powerful reminder of how very
blessed we are to have a God and Father
who loves us so much that He would send
His only Son as our Savior; a Son who
would be crucified, would die, and would
rise after three days so that we would be
saved. I pray that you and yours had a
very reverent Good Friday and a very joyous and Happy Easter.
Please remind your senior student that practice for both
Baccalaureate Mass and Graduation are mandatory
events. Seniors who miss practice are not allowed to
participate at the ceremony.
AP Exams
AP Exams will be administered beginning May 6, 2013.
The exam fee of $89 for each exam should have been
paid in March. Students who ordered an exam and
then decide not to sit for the exam will be assessed an
unused exam fee of $13 (the fee that is charged to the
school for unused exams.) Good luck to the students
as they begin this rigorous examination experience.
Senior Finals
The Senior Exam Schedule is as follows. Seniors
will be dismissed each day at the conclusion of their
exams. Seniors with office or administrative aide
periods are expected on campus at their assigned
duty area unless excused by their parent.
Mon., May 13:
Tues., May 14:
Wed., May 15:
Thurs., May 16:
Periods 4 and 6-Senior
dismissal at 1:30 pm.
Periods 3 and 5-Senior
dismissal at 3:00 pm.
Period 2-Senior
dismissal at 9:40 am.
Periods 1 and 7-Senior
dismissal at 11:20 am.
Final Exams for non-seniors
Second Semester finals will occur beginning on Friday
May 24 and concluding Tuesday through Thursday,
May 28 - 30. Students will be dismissed every exam
day at the conclusion of their last exam. These exams
are ninety minutes long, they are cumulative of the
information for the entire semester, and they account
for twenty percent of the final semester grade in each
course. In anticipation of this important week, please
encourage your students to begin preparing for these
exams well in advance.

Summer School Courses/Contracts
All semester grades of “F” that were earned
during the 2012-13 Academic year (first or second
semester) must be remediated in Garces Memorial
Summer School prior to the beginning of the 20132014 school year. Students are also recommended
to remediate all semester grades of “D” in order
to maintain college eligibility. Students may not
remediate courses during the next school year
without the permission of the Assistant Principal for
Academic Affairs.
Garces Memorial does not allow students to earn
credit for summer school course work taken at any
campus other than Garces without prior approval.
Prior approval is usually granted only in the case
of college level course work taken at an accredited
college/university or high school courses that
are not offered at Garces. Please do not enroll
in any summer school course at any institution
other than Garces Memorial until such a move
is approved in writing by the student’s assigned
counselor—Denise Limi ex: 158; Debra Sakowski
ex: 174; Amy Poochigian ex: 112. Students who
violate this expectation will not have said courses
accepted after the fact. If there are any questions
regarding this Summer School Course policy, contact
the above assigned counselor who will document on
the summer school course contract, which courses
have and have not been approved.
If the student has received written permission
(Summer School Course Contract) to enroll in a
course at a school other than Garces Memorial, said
course will not be posted on the Garces Memorial
transcript until the grade report/transcript has been
submitted to Joan Richardson, Registrar.

a summer school course at another campus and,

or encourage any senior trips. The school
does not sponsor trips organized by Garces
faculty members. These trips are organized
independently and are not school affiliated.
All school sanctioned trips must have
prior administrative approval. Any trip
organized independently is not, in any way
school affiliated. The school assumes
no responsibility or liability for “senior” or
unauthorized summer trips.

With Lent over, we are looking forward
to the end of school. The morning Mass
schedule, 7:20 AM, during Lent has been
well attended. The same schedule will
continue with daily Mass at 7:20 AM on
school days. It is my plan to have one
more Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament before the end of the school year.
This is planned for the last week of
April. On Friday, May 3, 2013, we will
have the final All Student Mass, which
is the Senior Farewell Mass. The Baccalaureate Mass is scheduled for Monday,
May 20, 2013.
Our theme for this year, Courage of
Faith, was highlighted with the talk
given to all our students and faculty by
Father Greg Boyle, S.J., the founder of
HomeBoy Industries. He spoke to the
students about his work in East Los Angeles. He is the author of Tattoos on
the Heart, the book we asked all the
students to read. This was a very good
learning opportunity for all of us here
at Garces.
Next year our theme will be Respect. I
will be working over the summer on activities to help our students make this a
part of their lives.

ASB UPDATE
During the week of April 15th, our students
will participate in Spring Fling Week. The
Spring Fling week is still in the working process. There will be dress up days and lunch
time activities every day. The week will begin with a rally on that Tuesday to get the
week going. The week will also include our
Ironman Game in which the junior boys will
battle against the senior boys in a Volleyball
game. Finally, on Thursday evening we have
our annual Powder Puff game. Powder Puff
will be another chance for the juniors to take
on the mighty senior class with the girls competing in a football game and also see which
class has the best cheerleaders.
By Myka Peck, Director of Activities
[email protected]
In the upcoming months, we will also
have our Prom on April 20th at the Elements Venue which is the old Ice House
building. The theme for the Prom is OZ.
Finally our Senior Sunset will be a closing of the class of 2013’s high school
experience here at GMHS by enjoying
each other’s company and watching the
sunset. The sunset will take place on
May 10th at the Garces pool.
More information to come about the
talent show, elections, and Grad Nite
in the near future. Watch for Email

Parent Club News
By Caryl Schweitzer, President
Can you believe the school year is nearly
over? It's hard to believe I've been a Garces
parent for two years!
April 4 Senior Student/Parent Meeting
7 p.m. in the gym
GPC Junior Reps host refreshments
In February, Patty Reis spoke at our Garces
Parent Club meeting. As you may know,
Mrs. Reis' two older children, Karen and
David, were killed on January 1, 2012. Mrs.
Reis shared the tragic, deeply personal,
story of her family's loss. She shared with
us the successful, spiritual and vivid lives of
her two grown children. It was a pleasure
to get to know these beautiful young adults
through their mother’s reminiscence. Please
continue to pray for Mr. and Mrs. Reis and
their two younger children, Mark and Melanie, as they move forward with their lives.
April 11 GPC Spring Social
6 p.m. in the grotto
This is a not-to-be missed fun, adult only, event
to network with other parents and meet incoming freshman parents.
Below are GPC activities scheduled for the
next few months. Please plan to participate
by volunteering a few hours or simply attending a GPC meeting. Parent participation is so important for the success of our
school and is a priceless way of holding onto
the bond with our children.
Be sure to watch for GPC sales of items with
the Garces logo. Items are sold as fundraisers for the GPC, which directly benefit the
students academically and spiritually. We
are currently selling sports towels for $10
and beach towels for $30. These are great
for spring and fall school sports, as well as
summer activities.

Summer Reading Program
Summer Reading List (AY 2012-13)
Garces Memorial High School
believes that learning is a year-round
activity. The books for the Summer
Reading Requirement are selected
with the intent to augment and enrich
the course experiences for which the
book was chosen. The intent of the
reading requirement is to encourage
students to read, to expose students
to different cultures and beliefs,
and to enhance their world view.
Finally, research strongly suggests
that continuous reading will improve
standardized test scores.

Advancement Update
THANK YOU GALA
VOLUNTEERS, DONORS AND
GUESTS!
This year's Gala was again a tremendous
success due to the dedication of our
Gala chairmen. Formal Night co-chairs,
Donna Anspach and Tianna Lundy
and their wonderful volunteers who did
an amazing job. New this year was the
Text2bid format for our silent auction
portion of the event, which nearly
doubled the number of bidders! It took
a little getting used to, but once our
guests got the hang of it, they were off
and bidding!
Casual Night Gala proved to be equally
as successful, with our guests enjoying

the gourmet fish tacos prepared by
Germaine Jacobs and her crew, our silent
and live auctions, the Treasure Chest
drawings, finishing off the evening
with dancing. Thank you to all of those
Casual Night volunteers who stepped up
to make sure the night ran smoothly and
everyone had fun.
MONSIGNOR LEDDY GOLF

The Monsignor Leddy Golf Tournament

your golf entry in the mail, along with
sponsorship opportunities.
Two entirely different events, with the
same outcome. Fun for everyone and
nearly $300,000 raised for our school.
We are always looking for Garces
Dads to help with the planning of the
tournament. If you are interested please
contact Tonya Abbott at tabbott@
