The festivities for the Open House will start
in the first floor Community Room at 2 pm
with a brief ceremony recognizing two of the
original founders of the Crete Public Library Marian Engel and Audrey DeMuth. The two,
along with Joanne Croissant, worked together to
start Crete’s first library in 1963.
In memory of Marian Engel, the Board of
Library Trustees approved the naming of the
first floor study room to the “Engel Study
Room”. Marian was the long-time school
librarian for the CM201U Jr. High/Middle
School, and it seemed appropriate to add her
name to a room so often used by students.
Both the Friends of the Crete Public Library
and the Crete Library Foundation have also
decided to support the library’s summer intern
program with two annual $500 scholarships in
her name to help young library district residents
participate in their first job experience.
In honor of Audrey DeMuth, the new first
floor community meeting room will be named
the DeMuth Community Room, a fitting tribute
to a woman who has been actively involved in
the Crete community for over 50 years. Audrey
was the editor of the Crete Record from 1963 to
1973 and managing editor for all the Russell
publications from 1973-1993.
She has served on the Crete Area Chamber of
Commerce, co-founded the local Women’s
Investment Network with Phyllis Monks, and is
active in the Crete Woman’s Club. Her husband
Winston served as a Library Trustee from 197387. Audrey worked on the library’s 1992
campaign, chaired the successful 1993
referendum to build a new library, and
volunteered her skills again
in the mid-2000s to help
pass a rate increase. She
wrote the history of the
Crete Public Library and is
currently preparing to
publish a new book on the
Crete Woman’s Club.
The Friends will hold their Fall Used
Book Sale on Saturday, November
15th from 10:00am until 3:00pm.
(Members of Friends will have early
entry at 9:30am). The $8.00 Bag of
Books option, a big hit during the
spring sale, will return! The tables will
be full; besides a wealth of donations,
the Friends also picked up a large
number of books from an abandoned
storage unit. Interested in helping? Call
(672-8017) or sign up at the library.

Public Information Coordinator Kelly Campos joined the
library earlier this year to manage the library’s newsletter, press
releases, website and other social media. “A big part of public
relations today is social media. So you have to find out where your
people spend their time, and connect with them”, says Kelly. “But
you don’t want to forget or ignore the people who do not have or
do not want a social media presence.”
Kelly is also working on increasing awareness of the library in the community,
visiting local businesses for the summer reading program and promoting library
events and services through the many media outlets available today. To promote
online interaction, Kelly has created quiz contests on Facebook and Twitter, a
monthly Video Highlights on You Tube, and an all-staff book review portal on
Goodreads.
In addition to her work here at the library, Kelly is a mom, a musician, and a
Library and Information Technology student at Dominican University. Kelly is
excited to be here, and she hopes to see everyone online!
CM201U High School students will return to work
at the Coffee Connection starting Monday,
September 8th! Enjoy a few chapters with a fresh
brewed cup of coffee upstairs in the café! The Coffee
Connection is open Monday through Thursday 10am
until noon on the second floor.

The 2014 Summer Reading Programs kept young and old
alike reading this summer.
Youth Services had 653 children signed up for the Paws
To Read program and they logged reading time of over
3,000 hours. Teenagers were well represented in the library,
too, with 64 teens reading 368 books over the course of the
Spark A Reaction Teen/Adult reading program. The 147
participating adults sparked quite a reaction themselves,
with 1228 books logged. Over 1800 people attended
summer programs and events!
Congratulations to everyone who participated!
The Friends are
looking for some
volunteers to sort
book donations

Jacqueline Amati, one of the organizers of the Friends group in 1989 and a
Library Trustee since 1999, and her husband are moving to Wisconsin to be closer
to family. The Amati family were library users from the days at the First Street
apartment building. Jackie worked on legislation that turned the village library into
a district (1985), helped plan the new library building (1996), and was involved in
the tough decisions to cut hours and services
in the early 2000’s.

Jackie is proud of the positive growth that
has come from the hard work of the Board,
the Friends and the community, especially the
2006 referendum which allowed the library to
expand services, staff, and the collection
again. “It took four tries,” she stated. “Now
we’ve seen the library become a real
community center with many people and
groups meeting here. The youth services
department is growing by leaps and bounds
and young adult is building up too,” she said
proudly. “I’m sorry to leave.” We’re sorry to
see her go!
The Friends of the Crete Public Library will hold their Annual Meeting and election of officers on
Tuesday, September 23rd at 7:00pm. at the library. During the past year, the Friends provided over
$5,000 in support for the library and other community events, including 240 T-shirts for the annual
Battle of the Books, staff gift cards to local eateries and lunch and entertainment for this spring’s
Senior Day.
