This proudly African campaign, running for the second year, from 3 – 9 August, is back to warm things up with exciting announcements from some of South Africa’s most loved brands. The campaign will feature recipes from South Africa’s favourite foodies and feature inspiring stories from African producers as we travel the continent in search of the fairest, premium quality coffee & cocoa beans. What’s your flavour? Both coffee & chocolate start off as beans grown by small-scale farmers from all around the world; by the time you’ve had your breakfast chocolate muffin and added sugar to your cappuccino, you’ve already relied on tens of thousands of small-scale farmers who grow these essential beans. EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENTS Mugg & Bean is launching single origin, organic and Fairtrade “bottomless” coffee across its national stores during Fairtrade Coffee & Choc Week. “When discussing innovation in our coffee procurement practices, it was Fairtrade that eventually won the consensus. Our Fairtrade coffee is carefully selected among the best, organic African beans and we expect it will deliver incredible value to both our customers and the producers in Uganda,” comments Lee-Ann Cullingworth, Marketing Manager at Mugg & Bean. NEW Cadbury Diary Milk Silk will be on retail shelves in time for Coffee & Choc Week. "We are very proud to have been the first major business to achieve Fairtrade certification in South Africa for Cadbury Dairy Milk slabs in 2011. Now, four years later, we are excited to be strengthening our commitment to Fairtrade with the launch of the new smoother, silkier Cadbury Dairy Milk Silk" says Andrea Wright, Mondelez SA Category Head for Chocolate. "We are confident that this move demonstrates our commitment to fair practices and improved living standards for our farmers and their communities. In working with Fairtrade, we can create a sustainable supply of high quality cocoa & sugar for Cadbury Dairy Milk and continue to spread joy to our consumers." The RSP for Silk is R8.99 (40g) and R24.99 (105g). Fairtrade instant coffee is officially available at Checkers stores countrywide. Checkers supports the Fairtrade ideal with their own range of Antigua Fairtrade Freeze Dried Coffees, exclusively available to Checkers and Checkers Hyper stores. It's fantastic that there is an organization solely aimed at overseeing the supply chain of products and making sure that every person involved in every stage of the process is paid and treated justly.” Cooking tips Coffee: never buy it in bulk quantities but rather in small amounts to last you a few weeks so that you're drinking coffee at it's best (and not letting it go stale in your pantry cupboard!). Chocolate: never to over-heat chocolate as it may seize and become grainy ZOLA’S RECIPE FAIRTRADE COFFEE & CHOC FUDGE BROWNIES Makes 16 Ingredients 1 tsp cocoa powder 170g butter 180g Cadbury Diary Milk Silk chocolate, chopped 150g castor sugar 3 eggs 1 tsp vanilla ¾ cup cake flour 4 Tbs Antigua Fairtrade Freeze Dried Coffees 1 tsp salt To serve: 1 Tbs Antigua Fairtrade Freeze Dried Coffees Preparation 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10. 11. Preheat the oven to 180C. Line and grease a square baking tin. In a bowl, combine butter and chocolate, then melt gently over a bain marie. Beat together castor sugar and eggs until light and thickened. Mix in chocolate mixture. Mix together flour, Fairtrade Freeze-dried coffee and salt then fold into the wet ingredients. Pour the mixture into the prepared tin. Bake in the oven for 20 minutes, or until the top starts to crack but the centre remains gooey. Remove from the oven and leave to cool completely in the tin. Grind together the Fairtrade Freeze-dried coffee and cocoa to a fine powder (I use a pestle and mortar) Cut the brownies into 16 squares then sift over the ground chocolate coffee mixture before serving.
