I want to begin by sharing my appreciation to all of you who came out for our SOL
Parent Night in April. Your feedback was valuable, and I am glad you were able to
learn new tips, techniques, and resources to better prepare your children for success on
our upcoming assessments. For those of you who could not make it, I encourage you
to reach out and contact your child’s teacher for resources and strategies that you may
have missed. Your child’s teacher is an outstanding resource and can provide you with
information to make this process more manageable.
I realize some of our students and families are new to the SOL assessments and our
Spring testing schedule. In addition, this year, we are all new to some of the revised
assessments that our children will see in math, reading, and science. As a parent of a
third grader myself, I share with you the experience and the emotions that come along
with it. However, I assure you that our teachers and faculty have been working diligently to identify and address academic weaknesses throughout the school and in their
classrooms for the best possible outcomes to occur. Everyone at Lafayette is invested
in the success of our students, and all of our staff members realize the importance of
the upcoming assessments. For the next several weeks at LUES, collaboration, remediation, and preparation are necessary as our students quickly approach the challenges of
assessments and our end of the year activities.
I encourage all parents to reach out to the school and to ask any questions you may
have. I strongly believe that your children’s confidence and optimism is important.
This is very often dependent on your ability to support them and start their days off
with positive experiences. Please continue to show them you care by listening to their
insecurities, believing in them, and trying to remove obstacles that may hinder their
success. Promote healthy eating habits and good sleeping patterns. The benefits of
these efforts extend far beyond their school experience.


Wow! We are halfway through the fourth nine weeks. Students are working hard preparing for their SOL
tests this month. As the students look forward to summer break, they are putting forth much effort into continued classroom learning. The students are currently reviewing all subjects and are trying their best!
Please insure that your child is rested and well prepared for school each morning. Thank you for your continued involvement in your child’s education. It is the key to their academic success.
GRADE 4
The last quarter of the school year has already begun! Spring Break was relaxing for students and teachers, and now we are gearing up to tackle SOL review for reading, math, and Virginia Studies.
How can we notice a page before reading a passage? What is the “Minus 3” strategy for noticing the
negatives? All of these questions are answered in our Shared Reading SOL Test Taking Strategies Review.
Students are learning how to tackle the questions on the SOL tests.
We are finishing our science instruction with units on static electricity, current electricity, and watersheds. Students will learn about contributions made by Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Edison. They will
also learn about positive, negative, and neutral charges in atoms. Students will learn about rivers, reservoirs, lakes, bays. and the positive and negative impact humans have on watersheds and the ecosystem.
In Virginia Studies and math, we will start our SOL review to prepare our students for the SOL tests at
the end of the school year. More information on how you can help your child prepare for the SOL tests will
come home soon.
We are very excited about the Jamestown Outreach Program coming to our school on May 1. Jamestown Outreach will present their “Cultures of Jamestown” Program. This helps prepare our students for
the upcoming Virginia Studies SOL test.
Thank you for encouraging your child to read each night. The weekly reading logs emphasize reading
fluency and comprehension skills, as well as writing skills. We look forward to a successful fourth quarter.

Where has the time gone? It is very hard to believe that is already May. Time sure flies when you are
having fun! We still have a lot of fun ahead as we prepare for the end of the year.
As you know, SOL’s are fast approaching. As a matter of fact, they start on May 14. Please check your
child’s agenda to see when they are scheduled to take a certain test. Every teacher has a different schedule, so it is very important that you ask your child the dates. SOL’s are scheduled for morning and afternoon sessions, so please try not to make appointments on those days, and make sure they arrive to school
on time with a nice, full stomach and a good nights’ sleep.
In all subject areas, except writing, we will be preparing your child for the upcoming SOL’s. In science,
students will be tested on both fourth and fifth grade material. In all other subjects, it will only be fifth
grade. We will be going over material in class, but students can also go on Jenny Brady’s webpage and review the materials for both science and social studies. Please encourage your child to read and to review
math every night at home.
In April, Walker-Grant Middle School Counselors came to each room and discussed course selection with
every student for next year. The paper they gave them needs to be returned by May 2 with your signature
on it. If you have not seen it, please give your child’s teacher a call.

REMINDERS FROM THE CLINIC
The end of the school year is approaching. Please be reminded that all inhalers and unused
medications must be picked up by the last day of school. Medications that are not picked up by
the last day of school will be destroyed per school policy. Unused medications/inhalers are not
stored at the school over the summer. Medications must be picked up by an adult. We do not send them
home with the students.
If your child will need medication(s) or an inhaler for the 2013/2014 school year, a new Medication Request Form will need to be completed by their health care provider. Medication Request Forms expire at
the end of each school year.
Attention Rising Grade Six Students—Virginia State Law requires all students have a Tdap
(tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) booster shot prior to staring the sixth grade, if at leas five years
have passed since their last tetanus containing shot. If your child has already had their Tdap shot this year
and your have not provided us with documentation, please do so as soon as possible. If your child receives their Tdap before the end of the school year, please bring documentation of this shot. If your child
receives their Tdap after June 14, then you will need to take this documentation to Walker-Grant Middle
School. This immunization may be obtained by your regular physician or military clinic. Additionally, our
local health department is taking appointments for this important childhood immunization.
