Hannah’s Home ‘Building Blocks’ Fundraiser

Hannah’s Home in Tequesta had a fundraising dinner
and informational evening featuring guest speaker,
Dennis Nunn, from the Exponential group. The country
themed event was held on Hannah’s Home property,
featuring a free barbecue dinner and the country
music band “If & When.” Guests learned about the
difference folks can make in the life of a young mother
and her child and over $162,000 was raised. For more

Hundreds Of Supporters Participated
In ‘Run For The Angels’
The fifth annual Run for the Angels drew more than
500 supporters to Abacoa Town Center on March 7 to
benefit Bella’s Angels Inc., a local nonprofit for children
with life-long disabilities. Again this year, 12-year-old
Bella Cavallo, who was diagnosed with CHARGE
syndrome eight years ago and for whom Bella’s Angels
was established, ran in the race. New this year, runners ran
through Roger Dean Stadium across home plate prior to
the Marlins and Mets spring training game. Jarrod “Salty”
Saltamacchia, catcher for the Miami Marlins, was this
year’s official race starter.

In the midst of rain, a total of 30 teams participated in this
year’s 4x1 mile relay race. Almost all supporters dressed up
in costumes – ranging from little girls in tutus to men in sumo
wrestling suits – for this festive, family friendly race.
The event raised more than $12,000 for Bella’s Angels.
Over the past nine years, the nonprofit has provided financial
and emotional support to numerous special needs children,
referred to as “Bella’s Buddies,” and their families.
Event sponsors included: Tri Bike Run, The Milk Jug,
FPL, Jupiter Medical Center, Quantum Foundation, Roger
Dean Stadium, Ryder, Downtown at the Gardens, ETW
Corporation, Gunster, Palm Beach Kennel Club, Seligman

Bella’s Angels Inc. offers assistance and support to
families of children who have been diagnosed with a life-long
physical disability. Bella Cavallo was officially diagnosed
with CHARGE syndrome at age 4. After struggling for

Cavallo, formed the foundation.

chandeliers, lush floral arrangements and dynamic
performances in celebration of the evening’s theme: “I
Dreamed a Dream.”
Collections of freeform candlelight illuminated the
Venetian Ballroom, while tables were dressed in elegant
linens with glorious centerpieces, golden plates and goldenrimmed goblets. Led by gala Chairman Gil Walsh, the
evening honored Board member and Endowment Chairman
Roberta and Harvey Golub.
Guests in sparkling gowns and tuxedoes were treated to
performances during dinner that included a rousing rendition
of Masters of the Maltz, featuring cast members from Les
Misérables performing a full song and dance set to the
musical’s tune Master of the House, but with personalized
lyrics written to honor the Golubs. Led by the theatre’s
Director of Education Julie Rowe, the Maltz Jupiter Theatre’s
Youth Touring Company performed an original arrangement
of Castle on a Cloud from Les Misérables, and 11-year-old
student Alexander Goodwin-Elam serenaded the Golubs with
the tune Where is Love from the musical Oliver.
A board member since 2006, Roberta has served as the
chairman, co-chair, honorary chair and publicity chair of many
of the theatre’s past gala celebrations and is actively involved
with the theatre’s Paul and Sandra Goldner Conservatory
of Performing Arts. Her husband Harvey, former CEO and
chairman of American Express, serves as chairman of the
theatre’s endowment board.
The exquisite evening also featured solo performances
from Les Misérables cast members Gregg Goodbrod and
Aloysius Gigl and a live auction, with proceeds that provided
scholarships for 52 local children to attend classes and camps
at the theatre’s Conservatory during the upcoming school year.

“Our biggest fundraiser of the year stayed true to the
theatre’s mission of entertaining, educating and inspiring
our community,” said Pamela Dyar, the theatre’s director
of development. “The Dream Ball’s success is a tribute to
the quality of performing arts education at the Maltz Jupiter
Theatre.”
Following cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, guests dined
like royalty on a succulent four-course meal, featuring beef
Wellington, a crab salad (complete with peas in a pod and
marigolds), and a dessert trio of caramel salted ice cream and
dark chocolates, key lime pie and fresh strawberries in a crystal
praline fruit cup.
“It was wonderful to see everyone enjoying an unforgettable
evening, and we are incredibly grateful for the tremendous
support from the community,” said Andrew Kato, the theatre’s
producing artistic director. “As the largest regional theatre in
Florida, we could not continue to thrive without those that
contribute to the theatre’s success.”
The annual event raised funds for the theatre’s awardwinning productions to help keep its performances affordable
for all, as well as inspiring the next generation of young
audiences through the theatre’s community outreach programs.
It also helped support local families by providing scholarships.

Trimming And Pruning Is Essential

Pruning is essential to
trees and ornamentals to
promote growth, health in the
plant and maintain esthetics
in its location. Most important
is trimming and pruning
properly. Some plants are
trimmed when dormant
and some as it’s flowering.
Certain ornamentals need to
be cut back on an angle vs.
a strait cut. Some plants and
trees require sealing where cuts are made.
Ornamentals should be examined regularly for pruning.
If pruning is ignored, most specimens become overgrown
and often weak. At that point drastic pruning is necessary to
bring the plant back to usefulness.
Reasons to prune or trim plants:
• Maintain or reduce plant size – Pruning prevents a
plant from overgrowing its space and eliminates the need
for drastic cutting of crowded, overgrown plants.
Before
of the crown, it may be best to hire experts. Large tree pruning, in particular,
can require climbing and heavy saws or even cherry pickers and chain saws.
This is a job that should be left to trained and experienced professionals.
Never compromise personal safety in pruning a tree.
This is a great time of the year to trim and prune. It is pre-hurricane,
pre-rainy season and before the heat of the summer growing season gets
into full swing.

• to remove obstructing lower branches
• to shape a tree for design purposes

It was a beautiful spring
Florida day. Rachel McKee, vice
president of Revolution Dating,
and I were on our way to meet
a very handsome and successful
V.I.P. client for lunch at Brio.
We will call him William Cobb.
William is 58 years old and
widowed.
We enjoy getting to know
our clients in and out of the
office. “The Revolution is the
solution,” as one male client said
this week. With new members pouring in monthly, there is
never a dull moment.
As the lunch started, William began telling us how much
fun he had at our last party. He said he enjoys seeing the
old and new faces at our events. As hosts, we have to agree.
There was a woman there who he had dated once. She liked
him and wanted the relationship to take off. He didn’t feel
the same way. This woman (we will call her Joan Avery) was
beautiful, but we were just getting to know her as a newer
client. Talking to William would help us help her and him. I
love win-wins.
We chatted about what he LOVEs in women. Of course, like
all men, he is visual. He mentioned he likes a woman who is
well dressed, and he also highlighted that her demeanor should
be soft, easy and kind. (Good advice for Power Women.)
About half way through the lunch, we still wanted specifics
on Joan. There had to be more to the story.
Kelly: William, what didn’t you like about Joan?
William: She has too much money for me. (He said with
a grin and we laughed out loud too...he has a good sense of
humor.)
Kelly: No really, you seem to be such a good fit. Why
didn’t the first date lead to the second date?
William: She is too “uppity.” She looks down on others
and thinks she is above everyone. I don’t like it.
Kelly: Well surely, she could have just been nervous.
Maybe she needs a second date to see if it was just first date
jitters?
William: Well, there was more. She looked like she was
going to the gym and put little effort in her look. She spoke of
her ailments! She was very serious and a little somber even.
She also talked about her former husband and that made me
uncomfortable. Kelly, she was gorgeous, but she is NOT
for me. Looks don’t mean much when a woman is not good
company.
At that point, I felt I did my due diligence for Joan and
I knew I could give her constructive feedback for her next
match at our club. She really struck out with William and
needed some sisterly advice. In closing, you never get a
second chance to make a first impression. Ladies, show up
with your best outlook and image on your first date! We will
help you if you need it. You can always look hot no matter
what your size or your body type. So get your positivity on
and come see me when you are ready for romance! Just as
the day turns to night, we can help you find your match thru
our contacts and friendship.

Preventing Falls As You Grow Older

Whether it simply bruises
your ego or breaks a bone,
taking a fall is no fun. Each
year, one in three seniors 65
and older experiences a fall
– a number that has grown
in recent years. For people
in this age group, falling is
the leading cause of injury
and injury-related deaths.
Whether due to concerns about independence or worrying
others, however, fewer than half these people tell the doctor
about their falls. But that could add insult to injury because
one fall may lead to another.
Don’t keep it a secret. Be upfront with your doctor – and
with us. Provide details about when, where and how you fell.

Stay healthy. Fortunately, falls needn’t be a “fait accompli.”
Even simple lifestyle changes can make a difference in
preventing falls. This includes maintaining good physical
condition with exercise, sleep and nutrition. Also, stay well
hydrated with plenty of water. And limit alcohol, which can
slow your reflexes and throw you off balance. Wear properly
fitting, sturdy shoes with nonskid soles and toss out the floppy
slippers and shoes with slick soles.
With your doctor’s permission, engage in exercise that
improves strength, flexibility, balance and gait. This might
include walking, water workouts, chair yoga or tai chi – a
gentle exercise that involves meditative movements. Is a fear
of falling keeping you stuck in your easy chair? Your doctor
may suggest physical therapy or a guided exercise program.
Review your meds. Here’s where we can really help. Make
a list of your medications. Do any make you dizzy or drowsy?
Your doctor and I can review this list with you, discuss any
side effects that you are having and decide whether it makes
sense to change your medications. Of course, don’t make any
changes without first having a conversation with your doctor.
Make changes on the home front. Here are a few more
ways to help prevent falls at home:
• Clean up spills right away.
• Remove throw rugs.
• Clear newspapers and electrical or phone cords from
walkways.
• Use nonslip mats in the bathtub and shower.
• Put nightlights in hallways, bedrooms and bathroom.
• Keep flashlights in easy-to-reach places.
• Turn on lights before going up or down stairs.
• Install handrails on both sides of stairways.
Has your doctor suggested an assistive device such as a cane
or walker – but your pride won’t quite allow it? It may help
to focus on how this can keep you more independent. Other
assistive devices can also help prevent falls. They include:
• A raised toilet seat with armrests
• Shower or tub grab bars
• A shower seat and hand-held shower nozzle

Conservancy dedicated a nature trail at
Blowing Rocks Preserve on Jupiter Island
to Maggy Hurchalla on Feb. 16, honoring
her for her ongoing dedication to protect
Florida’s natural environment.
At the event, while speakers listed just
a few of her achievements in the protection
of wetlands and uplands, dunes and creeks,
hammocks and scrub, Maggy beamed,
clearly enjoying most the retelling of
kayak misadventures and unscheduled dips
in the sea.
Maggy’s good friend Vevie Dimmitt
said, “Maggy’s Path is a connecting trail
with Maggy leading us on – connecting
us to nature and all things wild and each
other. That is so perfectly Maggy.”

the restored preserve reflects what south Florida barrier

garden and interpretative signs are featured along three
hiking trails and boardwalks. Swimming, snorkeling and
scuba diving are allowed from the beach during listed

Follies (Jan. 12 – 31, 2016), a Tony Award®-winning musical

intimate concert of Broadway classics in The Green Room
with Brenda Braxton: (March 30).

November will bring an extra-special benefit concert:
An Evening with Christine Ebersole (Nov. 21), the theatre’s
third annual Tony Award® winner benefit concert. Star of
stage, screen and television, she will be backed by a 10-piece
orchestra and will enchant audiences with her glorious voice,
performing songs from Broadway classics and standards from
the great American songbook.
Tennessee Williams’s The Glass Menagerie is coming to
the stage in August, presented by local high school students

No More Grousing

I stumbled across a new movement
taking hold on the Internet. If
you Google “Complaint Restraint
Project” you can learn all about
it. The initiative was established
by Thierry Blancpain and Pieter
Pelgrims. The mission of the project
is to create a more positive life by
eliminating negative statements for
30 days. “There’s no secret sauce,”
the Web site says. “Simply stop
complaining.” Unfortunately misery
just loves company, doesn’t it?
I thought I would give it a whirl, so I
enlisted some of my inner circle for a team style project. My sister
said it sounded interesting but she couldn’t commit to starting until
after the 19th of the month. Huh? Can it really be that difficult to
stop the grousing?
Fast Company picked up the battalion and even wrote a
post that lists ways to make not complaining a realistic goal.
Start By Defining What A Complaint Is:
Turns out there is a difference between an observation and a
complaint. Maybe I just tend to be very observant in my daily
life. Especially when I notice coffee dribbled on the floor or
laundry piled up. Perhaps people in my house just aren’t as
observant as I am. Is that possible? Or did I just slip back into
complaining? Seriously, a complaint brings about a negative
undertone and makes the energy drain out of you.
Track How Often You Complain And What About:
This opens the mindfulness cavern and really gets your brain
tuned into how habitually you fall into a pattern of complaining.
One morning while watching the news I had five slips in a
matter of minutes. Yikes, turn the television off, light a candle
and tune into some spa music.
Don’t Engage:
Skip the grousing fest and avoid friends who tend to overgrouse. If you have to attend a meeting or event, try to stay on
the fringe or add something positive. Just last week, I opened
my mouth to say I liked something and a certain person
pounced on me like Tigger in Pooh. The rant of expletives,
and “that is the stupidest thing I ever heard,” followed. Ouch!
Use The “But-Positive” Technique:
We all know this little trick helps you turn a negative into a
positive. Another way to phrase things is by turning a “but” into
a “get.” I have to pick up the dry cleaning. I get to pick up the
dry cleaning, which happens to be right across the street from my
favorite consignment store. I have to go up north in the middle
of a storm … but I get to spend time with my parents.
Just remember, ridding yourself of negativity takes work.
Don’t beat yourself up if you slip. Slips happen, just keep trying
to find the rainbow in the midst of the storm. I am working on
taking the challenge one day at a time. Won’t you join me?
