As you read this column, Julie, John and I are traveling with some of John’s friends on a cruise through
the Eastern Caribbean. Obviously cruises offer a lot to
make the most of the time: shore excursions, swimming pools, and of course, food. Lots and lots of food.
What I look forward to quite honestly is time just to
read. I’ll load up the Kindle with some fine books, and
just immerse myself in stories.
Reverend
Jeff Powers
I would like to encourage our church to take a little time to read as well.
This summer I will preaching from the Gospel of Mark. It is my favorite
of the gospels for several reasons. First, Mark is a fast-paced narrative of
Jesus’ ministry. Jesus is “immediately” going from one place to the next,
teaching, healing, and restoring. Second, it is a great accounting of Jesus’
life and ministry. In fact, 80% of the Gospel of Mark is found in Matthew
and Luke! Mark was a source for these two gospels.
POWER OF PRAYER GROUP
“Confess your sin to one another,
and pray for one another, that you
may be healed. The prayer of the
righteous is powerful and effective.”
James 5:16
Prayer requests may be made by
calling the church office
713.782.7750 or online @
www.wumc.com/ConnectwithUs/
PrayerRequests.aspx
Anyone who knows the Gospel of Mark knows the life and ministry of Jesus. There ae several good translations. “The Message” is the easiest to
read. It does a good job of presenting Jesus’ life in everyday language. If
you want to go more in depth, I recommend the Common English Bible
(CEB). This is a study Bible with great notes and insights. The comments
bring more fully to life the world in which Jesus lived.
So we will get back to the source of the gospel this summer: Jesus as presented in the Gospel of Mark. This will be a great season to make new discoveries about Jesus, and re-remember those special stories that give us
faith and hope.
Grace and Peace,
Rev. Jeff Powers

Westminster United Methodist Church
YOU ARE IMPORTANT TO US!
We are thankful that our attendance and membership
is increasing here at Westminster. We are doing all we can to
bring in new people and get them involved. In the process,
we keep records of attendance and create metrics for the
Church Council to track our numbers.
In light of this, it would be most beneficial if you
would register your attendance each Sunday. You don’t have
to fill in every blank if we have your info — just enter your
name to let us know you were here.
Praise God for the great things He is doing at Westminster!

Allen Lacy has been moved to a rehab center in Austin to regain his strength
and to be near his daughters, Melinda and
Julie. Please keep them all in your prayers.
It seems I just wrote about our Weekday School year ending and now it is here
again. School was out on May 20. This has
definitely been the fastest year ever. We always miss them in the summer. It is too quiet around here.
Speaking of summer — can you believe 2015 is almost half over. Time is flying much too quickly for me.
Once again Mother Nature has dealt
us a serious blow with the deluge of rain.
We had 10 inches at our house and some
places were worse. We pray for all who had
water and wind damage. The good news is
that we are no longer in a drought condition.
We just didn’t need it all at once!
We will all miss the smiling, cheerful
face of our precious Jan Irwin. She went
home to be with the Lord on May 1. She
was here for every event and always volunteered to help. We love you, Jan.
Julie & Jeff Powers are taking their
son, John, and friends on a Caribbean Cruise
in June. Wow! This will be a great family
trip and great time to spend together. Bon
Voyage! Have a great trip and enjoy every
minute!
The Texas Annual Conference was
held May 24-27. This is the annual business
meeting for our United Methodist Conference. Julie and Jeff Powers and Ginger
and Dennis Hurta were delegates. We got
to spend the Memorial Day holiday in many
long meetings but it is important business.
This year we elected delegates to the General
Conference held every four years. These delegates establish the doctrine in our Book of
Discipline for the entire world-wide United
Methodist Church.

Can you help out our neighbors??
The UMC Texas Annual Conference is involved in helping homeowners recover from
recent flooding.
They need additional packing materials and volunteers to help homeowners pack up
belongings.
The volunteer signup location and drop off for the weekend is Westbury UMC at 5200 Willowbend Blvd. in
the gym near the front office. The signup location will move to St. John's Presbyterian at 5020 West Bellfort
on Monday. The Westbury UMC gym is being turned into the local Multiple Agency Resource Center.
Volunteer work hours are Monday-Saturday 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM, and Sunday afternoon.
Emergency Response Teams with certified personnel have been cleaning up possible hazardous problems.
Training is required for ERT members.
This is a link to the TAC website and notice - http://www.txcumc.org/newsdetail/1089907
Methodist Men will not meet during the summer months. We will look forward to seeing you in the fall.
A group of us have tickets to the June 12th Astros vs. Mariners game. The sales rep indicated he can still get us more seats around our group if there are any last minute requests. Tickets are $37 for section 252 and you get all-you-can-eat hotdogs, nachos, popcorn, soft drinks and water. If anyone has an interest, they can contact me at 713-203-4544
or [email protected]. Thanks!
THE WESTMINSTER CHURCH OFFICE is blessed by volunteers who work either the morning or afternoon each day. The volunteers answer the phones, help with
general office tasks, and welcome visitors and guests. It is a valuable ministry of the
church, and gives you the opportunity to get to know the staff better, and to see many
faces outside of Sunday morning worship. Presently, we have a need for a volunteer
or a team of volunteers to fill the Monday & Thursday mornings & afternoon (9-12:30 & 12:30-4:00) time
slots. We are also working on an expanded list of substitutes who can fill in occasionally. If you are interested or would like more information, please contact Donna Yost, at 713-782-7750 or email:
[email protected].
SANCTUARY FLOWERS SIGN UP SHEET
The Sanctuary Flowers Chart is in the narthex area. And there are lots of spaces
available to provide altar flowers in memory of someone or to honor someone special. The flowers are a beautiful addition to our sanctuary each week, and a reminder of the beauty of God’s earth. Two arrangements cost $110.00. You may
take one or both of the arrangements with you after the 11:15 worship service, or
donate them.
ADULT EDUCATION NEWS
June, 2015
NEW STUDY BEGINNING IN THE MCDANIEL CLASS: Marvin Ahlberg
is beginning a study on the Letter of James. James focuses on how to live our
faith. You will recognize many familiar truths, such as faith without works is
dead, being patient in the midst of suffering, and taming our tongues! This special group is comprised of young-at-heart senior adults and was one of the first
Sunday school classes ever formed at WUMC! You are welcome to join us in
room A-108 at 10:15 am.
EVERYONE IS INVITED TO
TUESDAY NIGHT BIBLE STUDY
We are Getting Back into the Bible
6:30 pm in Room A109
We have begun a study of Paul’s Letter to the Romans.
Paul’s mission in the letter is to explain the Gospel about salvation
through faith in Jesus. He especially highlights that Jesus is the culmination of
God’s relationship with Israel, and that the Gospel was always meant to spread
beyond Israel to non-Jews. This is why he focuses so much on key Old Testament themes (Abraham, Torah, circumcision) and on the implications of the
Gospel for the Jew/Gentile relationship. Contact Ginger Hurta with questions.
[email protected] or 713.782.7750.
It’s never too late to join the discussion. We hope to see you there.
Appreciation from the family of
Jane Peveto
Please know that the family of Jane Peveto
(especially her daughters, Ginger Hurta, Barbara
Thompson and Shelly Farland and granddaughter, Stacy
Walton and grandson, Joe Peveto) are thankful for your prayers and concerns
during our time of sorrow. Jane went Home to be with the Lord on May 27.
Our Precious Mother will be dearly missed but we praise God for His
blessings throughout this time. We are at peace and rejoice that she is in
heaven with her beloved Lord and Savior.
The memorial service will be held on June 15 at 11:00 at Westminster
United Methodist Church. You are invited to join us for a reception immediately following in the Parlor. The family requests in lieu of flowers a donation be
made to The Christian Community Center, 3434 Branard, Houston 77027 or
Houston Hospice, 1905 Holcombe, Houston 77030.

WEEKDAY SCHOOLS NEWS
June, 2015
Day School News
The Weekday Schools have completed another wonderful school year.
Summer School is beginning the week of June 2nd, on Tuesday and Thursday.
We are so grateful to the church for its support of our ministry and to our wonderful families, who share their precious children with us.
Be sure to thank a teacher, assistant, helper or anyone
you meet who is involved with WWDS. They provide a
loving, safe and creative environment for many children
in our neighborhoods, and we want them to know we
appreciate all they do!
