Every picture was a postcard, and I thought to
myself: remember this.
Remember dining around the world without ever having to leave
the ship. And how our Suite Class butler was oh-so-right about
that Swedish massage.
In the end, I don’t remember a single thing from our Celebrity
cruise—I remember everything.
Celebrity is proud to be the “Official Cruise Line of the Sonoma

2015 SONOMA INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL
Welcome to our 18th!!!
Welcome
I’m so glad all of you are here to celebrate the art of cinema with 200
filmmakers from 26 countries who have made the journey to Sonoma to
support their respective films. The word is out about our festival’s relaxed,
friendly, ebullient atmosphere in the midst of beautiful Sonoma Valley. I
hope you see as many films as possible and appreciate the work of our
talented filmmakers. Making a film requires a lot of hard work, talent and
tenacity. It’s not easy to get a film into theaters and we want our festival
to be a launchpad for filmmakers and the place for distributors to secure
quality films. The more 'indie' films that are seen and talked about, the
greater chance of them being picked up for digital distribution and/or
theatrical release. Please engage our filmmakers and enjoy our enchanting town that provides an abundance of gracious hospitality, usually
accompanied by a couple glasses of delicious wine and some amazing
cuisine from our local restaurants. Most of all, have fun at our 18th! I want
to see you shake a leg at our spirited nightly Backlot Tent parties! Thank
you to all who make our festival possible: Patrons, sponsors, festival passholders, local businesses, restaurants and wineries, our luxurious lodging
partners, staff, volunteers, host families, and of course, Ginny!
Kevin W. McNeely Executive Director
What a great year of cinema it has been. Even before the festival begins,
I am on the lookout for films for the next year. Without placing one film
above another, this year's opening night film comes from the Toronto
International Film Festival and the closing film first screened in Cannes,
both World Class. The Sonoma International Film Festival's buzz around
the world has been evident and we have filmmakers and visitors attending who are here because of the positive word of mouth.
The festival is becoming a celebration of film from around the world with
a nice selection of Bay Area filmmakers. The culinary cinema is delicious,
the environmental documentaries are informative, The arts and design
films are thought provoking and the action sports films are extreme.
I would like to thank the generous support of our sponsors, board and
volunteers.
Enjoy the festival!

VAMOS AL CINE
SIFF is once again celebrating the contributions, culture and values of our
Latino community by presenting the Vamos al Cine program—a cinema
cocktail with flavors from Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Argentina, Bolivia,
Spain, and Chile. This showcase of the best of ‘cine-en-español’, with little
to no commercial release in the U.S., is screened at venues around the
Plaza and in the heart of the Springs at La Luz Center.
At La Luz, admission is A-Buck-A-Film for residents of the Springs and
child care is provided to engage the whole family who may have no other
opportunity to enjoy this cultural entertainment.
Thanks to the MacMurray Foundation’s support we continue to provide
an opportunity of community integration and cultural exchange through
the universal language of film. Nos vemos en el cine! See you at the
movies!

Student Media Arts Program
Vamos al Cine
Sebastiani Theatre - Sunday, March 29
10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. / 9:30 coffee reception
Join us for an hour of films, followed by Q&A with the student filmmakers
at the historic Sebastiani Theatre.
The 2015 Student Show will be a mix of some of the "BEST OF" the past
ten years, in addition to a selection of original student works from the
2015 Media Arts Program classes. Additionally, to start the show, we
are proud to screen three short Public Service Announcements from
the 2015 Middle School Video Workshops, produced by the Sonoma
International Film Festival and the Boys and Girls Club of Sonoma Valley.
Since 2002, the Media Arts Program at the Sonoma Valley High School
has been the primary charitable beneficiary of the Sonoma International
Film Festival. Over the past 13 years the Festival has directed over
$400,000 to the program to provide students with state of the art equipment and partially fund the program’s faculty. The program has inspired
thousands of students and many have been admitted to some of the best
film schools including UCLA, Chapman and others. Many graduates are
now working in the industry as film, media and screen writing professionals. Each year, the program trains hundreds of students in the areas
of cinematography, video editing, film production and broadcast giving
them skills they can use for their entire professional career. The Festival
also supports a film program for middle school students at the Boys and
Girls Club of Sonoma allowing the children an opportunity to express

A Little Chaos
This sumptuous British historical drama is actor Alan Rickman’s
directorial debut. King Louis XIV (Rickman) is determined to prove that
France can conjure unparalleled splendor and commissions the famous
landscape architect André Le Notre (Matthias Schoenaerts, Rust and
Bone) to design the grand gardens of the still-to-be-completed Palace
of Versailles. Madame Sabine De Barra (Academy Award winner Kate
Winslet) plays the revolutionary gardener hired by Le Notre. This strongwilled gardener has little time for his classical ordered designs; yet, as
the work progresses, she finds herself drawn to the enigmatic Le Notre
and forced to negotiate the perilous rivalries and intricate etiquette of
the court of King Louis XIV.

The Search
The Second Chechen War, 1999. A powerful recount, on a human scale,
of a conflict told through four lives that will be brought together by
a shocking twist of fate. After his parents are killed in their village, a
small boy flees, joining the flood of refugees. He meets Carole (Annette
Bening), a European Union delegation head and little by little, with
her help, he will return to life. At the same time, his elder sister Raïssa
searches tirelessly for him amongst the civilian exodus. Then there's
20-year-old Kolia... a recent Russian Army recruit, who will gradually be
overwhelmed by the daily life of wartime.

The Whisky A Go Go, The Roxy, The Viper Room, and The Troubador:
a quartet of Hollywood Sunset Strip nightclubs that changed music
history. The Whisky was so small, they introduced the concept of a

Motley Crue, and Van Halen got their start as the house band there.

An Eye for Beauty
(Le règne de la beauté)
A romantic drama becomes a means for a sharply observant societal
critique in this new film from Academy Award winner Denys Arcand (The
Barbarian Invasions), about a married Québécois architect who embarks
upon a torrid love affair with a young Toronto woman. Arcand applies
his sensitivity to landscape, the seasons, community, friends, family, and
history giving the film a deeper social context.

Photographer and filmmaker Don Freeman explores the handmade
homes created and lived in by eleven distinguished American artists,
shedding light on a unique architectural typology characterized by
a D.I.Y. aesthetic, the appropriation of building techniques from art
practice, and a fierce spirit of individual expression that deserves deeper
examination in this age of architectural standardization. The film reveals
the inventiveness derived from the dialogue between each artist's
practice and the construction of their handmade homes.

newly independent nation more than 50 years ago. In the spirit of the
Buena Vista Social Club this documentary focuses primarily on the
years 1962-1966 by interspersing vintage and contemporary concert
footage, authentic tourist 8mm home movies, photographs, newsreels,
artifacts and rare interviews, all of which illuminate the facts and myths
surrounding the music. Ska was Jamaica’s first popular musical export,
which sprang from the jazz clubs and dance halls of Kingston to spawn
a worldwide dance craze. Without Ska, there is no Reggae.

Love Thy Nature
We need to fall in love in nature. What we fall in love with, we protect.
When we fall in love, we transform. Through loving and protecting
nature, we can heal ourselves and ensure a future for our children.
The film weaves a rational exploration– using experts' interviews and
narration– into an emotional journey. It immerses us in an awe-inspiring,
sensual and poetic experience, awakening our reverence for the natural
world. Narrated by Liam Neeson.

Searching for Posada:
ART and Revolutions
José Guadalupe Posada’s art lampooned politicians, recorded vivid
images of the Mexican Revolution, inspired Mexico's famed Taller
Grafica Popular to use art for social causes, incredibly helped the Cuban
Revolution succeed, adorned concert tickets for the Grateful Dead and
today leaps to life annually as the skeletal images seen during Day of
the Dead, so popular now that even Disney and Pixar are planning a Day
of the Dead animation film. Yet Posada’s influence is rarely associated
with his name, his true story virtually unknown. Posada art will be on

The SONOMAWOOD sign
(a.k.a. “That darn sign”)
First created in 2009 the sign has become a beacon of the SIFF, but that
was never the intention.
It is a common core performance math task, teaching the Pythagorean
Theorem, angle concepts and construction skills to students but that
is not the intention. It is the foundation for a four week unit about
Hollywood which includes visits from directors, filmmakers and various
SIFF personnel, but, well, you get the idea.
What the sign does, along with the other artwork created for the festival
by Creekside High School is connect students to their community. As Skip
Olinger said last year, “Helping kids express their ideas is fundamental to
the mission of the film festival. The sign is the actualization of a project by
kids who otherwise don’t get much chance to see their ideas come to life.”
Along with the darn sign, this year
students are busy creating an 8foot cage, giant environmental
farm animals, venue flags, and
wooden donation boxes for the festival. Got an idea? Sure, Creekside
can do that. They are the "Rosie
the Riveter" of the Film Festival.
Life is short, work hard, create, and
connect.
Students are rewarded for their
creative efforts with passes to the
festival which enable them to travel
around the world watching films
about issues which they have never
been exposed to. Then the connections happen, the world is a big and
your potential is unlimited.
All because of that darn sign.

Teacher, Creekside High School
