Kelly McGillis and Lisa Eichhorn Featured at
the Fifth Annual Greater Reading Film Festival
Celebrating “Women in Film” and local
female film professionals, we are pleased
to announce the special guests attending
and the lineup of films selected to screen
during the Fifth Annual Greater Reading
Film Festival (GRFF) Friday, Nov. 5, through
Sunday, Nov. 14, at the R/C Movies 11 &
IMAX at Entertainment Square. Screenings
range from Hollywood blockbusters to
documentaries with local interest, and
include independent films representing 16
countries.
Actress and former Berks resident Kelly
McGillis will open the festival on Friday,
Nov. 5, with a special celebration, in
partnership with Berks Women in Crisis,
at the Cohen Gallery in the GoggleWorks
Center for the Arts, followed by a screening
of “The Accused” at 7 p.m. in the R/C
Movies 11 & IMAX, with a filmmaker Q&A
panel after the screening. Hors d’oeuvres
and refreshments will be served. Tickets for
the reception and screening/panel are $35,
with tickets for the screening/panel only at
$20. She will also attend a 25th anniversary
showing of “Witness” in the R/C Theatres,
followed by a filmmaker Q&A on Saturday,
Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $20.
Sunday, Nov. 7, is “Women in Film Day”
with special screenings and activities
featuring women’s issues and female
filmmakers. Many of the films screening that
day, as well as over the course of the ten-day
festival, will be followed by panel discussions
featuring the filmmakers or local experts
pursuant to the film’s topic. Berks County
natives, actress Lisa Eichhorn and filmmaker
Melissa Hammel, will join other local female
film professionals for a Women In Film
Symposium in the R/C Movies 11 & IMAX
on Sunday, Nov. 7, at 7 p.m. Tickets are $15.
Ms. Eichhorn’s films take center stage during
the festival’s second weekend, with the
screening of “A Modern Affair” on Saturday,
Nov. 13, at 7 p.m., followed by a Q&A panel.
Tickets for this screening are $15. Closing
the festival on Sunday, Nov. 14, at 3 p.m. will
be a screening of “…Around” produced by
Ms. Eichhorn and directed by David Spaltro,
who will both be panelists for the filmmaker
Q&A following the film, then followed by
the festival’s closing ceremonies, hosted
by the Latina Gathering in the Schmidt
Technology Center at RACC. Hors d’oeuvres
and refreshments will be served at the
closing reception, with tickets $25 for both
the screening/panel and reception, and $15
for the screening/panel only.
This year’s festival attracted over 180 films
from around the world in competition
for the GRFF prizes, with 34 films from
16 countries selected for screening.
Cash awards are given annually to the
top narrative feature and documentary
films, and to the top short films in three
award categories: Adult/Post-College,
College, and High School, as selected by
the GRFF programming committee. This
year’s narrative feature film winner of
$1000 is “Backyard” (Mexico), a stunning
portrayal of the violence against women in
Ciudad Juarez, directed by Carlos Carrera.
“Backyard” screens Friday, Nov. 12, at 7
p.m., and will be hosted by The Latina
Gathering, followed by a panel discussion.
This year’s documentary film winner of
$1000 is “Gasland” (USA), a powerful film
outlining the risks associated with natural
gas collection from the Marcellus Shale,
directed by Josh Fox. Gasland will screen
Thursday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m., hosted by
the League of Women Voters, and will be
followed by a panel discussion.
Winning short films each receive a $250
cash award, and all of this year’s winners
will screen in the Short Film Showcase on
Saturday, Nov. 13, at 1 p.m. The 2010 short
film award winners are: Adult/Post-College
– “God of Love” (USA), written and directed
by Luke Matheny; College – “PING!” (USA),
written and directed by Jason Oshman, Penn
State University at University Park; and High
School – “Crippled” (South Korea), written
and directed by Ien Chen, Seoul Foreign
School, Duluth, GA. Many of the short film
filmmakers will be in attendance for the
showcase.

Unleash Your Inner Opera Fan
In Greater Reading
by Julee Peterdozzi, Alvernia University
Berks Opera Workshop’s presentation series, in
conjunction with The Met: Live in HD broadcasts,
refines the art of how to experience opera locally.
Having begun its fifth season in October of
2010, The Met: Live in HD broadcasts live, highdefinition performances to theaters in more than
40 countries around the world.
Berks Opera Workshop, recognizing that Greater
Reading had no local exposure to live opera,
began giving presentations in conjunction with
the Live in HD shows. “The popular media
reinforce only the negative stereotypes of opera”
explains David Richie, president of the Berks
Opera Workshop. “It has become so unfamiliar
that many people practically feel they need
permission to enjoy it. I’d like the chance to give
them that permission.”
The 2010-2011 season began Saturday, Oct.
9, with Das Rheingold, and will end Saturday,
May 14, with Die Walküre, which are the first
two installments of Wagner’s epic Der Ring des
Nibelungen (The Ring of the Nibelungs). Those
productions will be conducted by James Levine,
and directed by Robert Lepage. The next live
broadcast is Donizetti’s comedy Don Pasquale,
on Saturday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m.
www.keystoneinstantprinting.com
Proud sponsor of the Berks
Jazz Fest & the BerksArts newsletter
Richie began showing multimedia presentations
through Berks Opera Workshop to familiarize
audiences with the art form. “Each presentation
is like a variety show” according to Richie.
“We explain the plot, and give some interesting
historical background about the opera, the music
and the composer.”
The series is titled “Unleashing Your Inner
Opera Fan,” and each presentation features
Berks Opera Workshop singers such us
Tamara Black, Maria Damore and Toni Marie
Palmertree. They perform material related to the
opera being presented that day. Richie unifies
both educational material and humor in his
presentations, and helps viewers appreciate the
art of opera.
“The greatest opera performances bring
together all the arts at their highest level of
genius and accomplishment,” says Richie.
He will be holding presentations for all Live
in HD broadcasts this season. Several of the
presentations will be held at the R/C Reading
Movies 11 & IMAX prior to The Met: Live
in HD broadcasts, with others held at the
Canal Street Pub and Restaurant. For the
upcoming schedule and information, visit

Berks Arts News November & December 2010 11
A Year in Review: BAC 2009-2010 Annual Report
by guest author Beth Renfro,
Marketing and Public Relations Director
“Nothing endures but change” ~ Heraclitus
The 2009-2010 fiscal year, which ended June
30, proved to be a test of perseverance for the
Berks Arts Council. The struggling economic
recovery continued to present challenges for
those of us devoted to the arts, but as any
true artist knows, the show (or concert, or
exhibit, or recital) must go on!
The Bandshell Concert Series, which always
begins our new fiscal year, had a festive
mix of artists, and featured a new twist –
local music acts on the Bandshell stage!
Alternative/funk band Eclectica, and Celtic
singer-songwriter Cathie Ryan visited City
Park, and we welcomed local blues group
The Blues Factor, and salsa sensations Hector
Rosado Y Su Orquesta Ache to close out the
season. Our programming maestro, Gary
Spencer, continues to outdo himself year after
year, finding outstanding music groups and
artists for the residents of Greater Reading to
enjoy in a free, outdoor venue.
Fast Lane Art, our juried art show featuring
art on billboards, courtesy of our good
friends at Land Displays, had a second
successful exhibit in August at the Yocum
Center for Arts Education. Thanks to a
generous contribution from the John S. and
Jennie J. Palkon (née Lis) Charitable Fund,
we were able to provide cash awards to the
winning artists. The Art in the Afternoon
salons continued, and featured local graffiti
artist Tom Kijak in October, hosted by
Ed Babiarz and Tim Greusel. Renowned
Kutztown watercolor artist Matthew Daub
was featured in April, hosted by Kutztown
University President Javier Cevallos and his
wife, BAC board member Josée Vachon.
The freshly-minted Greater Reading
Film Festival, our fourth annual, moved
to the first weekend in November. This
all-independent-film festival, highlighting
original submissions from throughout the
world of documentary and narrative features
and short films, debuted Nov. 5-8, at the
brand-new R/C Reading Movies 11 & IMAX
at Entertainment Square. One of the many
highlights was our Special Closing Reception:
a screening of the Hitchcock classic Rear
Window at the new Reading Hospital School
6 Berks Arts News November & December 2010
of Health Sciences Building, followed by a
meet-and-greet event with Gene London at
the Reading Public Museum in conjunction
with his “The Magic of Hollywood” exhibit.
As this popular annual event continues to
grow, the Fifth Annual Greater Reading
Film Festival has been expanded to ten days,
Nov. 5-14, with a “Women in Film” theme,
and features special guests Kelly McGillis and
Lisa Eichhorn.
Our milestone 20th Annual VF Outlet
Berks Jazz Fest proved that even though the
economy may not be great, people still need a
reason to smile. For this special anniversary,
we pulled out all the stops, with special jazzthemed events dominating Greater Reading
in the weeks leading up to the festival. Once
again, our general manager John Ernesto
put together an exciting month of music,
musicians and fans that will be hard to beat
– but we’re up for the challenge! The 21st
Annual Berks Jazz Fest returns March 25April 3, 2011.
In 2009-2010, some of our annual events
had to be postponed, or saw reductions in
their budgets, due to the ongoing uncertainty
of the economy. Our re-granting program
with Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (in
partnership with the Pa. Council on the Arts)
provided cash awards of more than $50,000
to arts projects and programs occurring
in Berks and three surrounding counties:
Lancaster, Lebanon, and Schuylkill. The
annual Pagoda Awards were temporarily
suspended, but are scheduled to return in the
spring of 2011.
The arts in Greater Reading suffered many
personnel losses over this period, with
changes in leadership at the Goggleworks
Center for the Arts, the Reading Symphony
Orchestra, the Reading Public Museum and
the Berks Arts Council. In the spring of
2010, our Executive Director of ten years,
Connie Leinbach, announced her retirement,
effective in July. We also lost Program
Manager Matthew Serio in June, as he moved
on to Habitat for Humanity, managing their
new ReStore location in Temple. Yet from
chaos springs great beauty, as witnessed by
the many new faces in the local arts scene
and at the BAC, most notably our new
Executive Director Chris Cannon, who
began his tenure during the 2010 Bandshell
Concert Series.
As we move forward through uncertain
times, we’re confident that the arts are
a viable part of the overall solution:
economically, educationally and spiritually.
At the Berks Arts Council, our passion is
the arts, and we’re so pleased to be able to
continue serving that mission, enhancing
Greater Reading’s creative needs well into the
future! g
