November 2015 the palette General membership meeting what’s inside Thoughts from the other side of the Palette 2 Tuesday, November 10, 2015, 7pm Yocum Institute for Arts Education, Wyomissing On Exhibit Locally 3 AMY STAUFFER: Photographing Your Work Calendar of Events 7 Member News 9 Opportunities for Artists 9 Amy Stauffer has five years of experience as a professional wedding and portrait photographer and is also an award winning wildlife artist specializing in scratchboard. She is a signature member of the International Society of Scratchboard Artists. She will be demonstrating and discussing her own techniques for photographing fine art for use in one’s portfolio, juried shows, web sharing, and printing. In the digital age, these are skills that are vital to the success of most artists. Topics that will be discussed are how to make the most of your existing equipment, proper lighting, and basic post processing and editing. ~Elaine Reinert Remember to wear your name tags to the meeting! ................................................................................................................................. Residents of The Highlands look forward to seeing artwork hanging on the walls as they go to various sections of the main building. It provides joy to so many people who may no longer be able to travel to different venues to see beautiful works of art. We may also be providing a wonderful way for them to purchase gifts for family and friends. I‘m looking forward to strong participation by our members. Committee Chairs Our February membership show at the Yocum will have a RED theme. Please consider having at least a touch of red in the art you submit. The show’s reception will be on Sunday, February 14, appropriate for our theme. This presentation should be helpful for our members when applying for our next juried show in 2016 as well as other shows requiring electronic submission. We are seeking volunteers for our Juried Show Committee. Please contact Lynn Millar. Many participants will make the task much easier and more fun. The September New York Pastel Show was a hit for everyone who attended. The John Singer Sargent Show at the Met was wonderful as well. There is so much to see and never enough time! We will sponsor another bus trip in the spring to the Watercolor Show again in New York City. As that time approaches, we can decide what other exhibits we wish to include in the agenda. Donna Unger provided a two-day workshop with Michele Byrne that was enjoyed by all who attended. Donna welcomes suggestions from members for other workshops. Trudy Moore has once again agreed to chair the Steering Committee. Please forward suggestions for discussion to Trudy or me. The Executive Committee has presented some items to be reviewed, but we welcome other thoughts as well. It isn’t too soon to mention our Holiday Party on December 10. What fun it is to see and taste the “pot luck” treats that are brought. The party provides not only great food, but also the opportunity to relax and enjoy each other’s company during the busy holiday season. As always, I want to thank everyone for the support given to me and the other officers of your organization. Keep in mind that you too can take on a leadership position. We are all here to work together to make this a strong and lasting Berks Art Alliance. onexhibitlocally Allentown Art Museum 31 North Fifth Street, Allentown, PA 18101• 610.432.4333 Tuesday through Saturday 11am-5pm, Sunday noon-5pm, closed Monday Through December 6: “Jeffrey Becom: Colors of India,” series of photographs explores the vivid colors of the built environment in northern India. LIGHT RIGHT Getting the light right can be one of the biggest challenges you face when photographing your work. Select a neutral background like a wrinkle free white bed sheet. I use white fleece. Colored walls, even off-white ones, can distort colors. Remove any glass covering your art work. I recommend photographing oil paintings after dry but before the varnish coat. Don’t use a flash. Unless you are an expert at using sophisticated bounce flashes, it will create hot spots, uneven light, washed-out colors, or undesirable shadows. Available light indoors isn’t usually adequate–either in intensity or quality. Some people recommend photographing artwork outdoors on an overcast day. Sunny days may produce problems with glare. A blue sky will give your work a blue cast. Beware of color shifts caused by nearby red brick walls, grass, or brightly colored structures. If you paint with oils, be sure your painting is absolutely dry before photographing outside. Insects and blowing dirt and dust can contaminate it. Assembling these items together, from rusty gauges, to bones, to old wooden objects, the work reflects an odd juxtaposition of items that metaphorically and ironically convey a message. April 9 – May: Four by Four... and maybe more. Bits and Bytes (continued) I prefer in-studio photography, although getting even light when shooting indoors can be tricky. Cheap clip-on 8-inch aluminum reflectors with 150 watt or higher clear incandescent bulbs, mounted on homemade stands can help light your subject. A quick way to make them– a 6 or 8 foot 2x3 and four 12-inch shelf brackets for stabilizing legs. You will need at least two so you can direct light at opposing 45 degree angles. Pay attention to the angles of the lights to avoid harsh shadows. For best results you will need to soften the light. You can bounce it– shine them backwards onto white foam core or other reflective surface– or diffuse it with several layers of cheesecloth or parchment paper attached to the reflector. Try to use only one type of light (daylight, shade, incandescent, or fluorescent.) If I shoot art work in our studio during daylight I may darken the windows. Now you will need to set your camera’s white balance. Avoid the auto white balance setting. This setting may be easiest, but it flattens the colors based on averages detected by the camera’s sensors and therefore distorts the colors of your artwork. Try different settings. CFLs and frosted incandescent bulbs can yield unpredictable results. The incandescent setting on most cameras is based on the yellow light given off by clear bulbs. Using the incandescent setting with some coated bulbs (continued next page) 5 Studio B Bits and Bytes (continued) can produce a nasty blue shift in the image. If you find this is a problem, experiment with the fluorescent settings–most cameras have three to choose from. I recommend learning to set a custom white balance. Although you will need to consult your manual to do this, the essence of what you will have to do is find the custom white balance menu, take a picture of a white or neutral gray object (foam core, bright white printer paper, etc.) and adjust the color balance on screen until color casts disappear from the image. Yocum Institute for Arts Education (formerly the Institute of the Arts) 1100 Belmont Avenue, Wyomissing, PA 19610 • 610.376.1576 Monday through Thursday 9am-7pm, Saturday 9am-1pm Upstairs Gallery: Through November 10: Mary Lou Creyts, Maria Coronado, Trudy Moore and Carol Sumner. November 11 – January 11: Jane DeGruchy, Joanne Dietz, Donna Unger, and Trudy Moore. Yocum Gallery: Through December 23: “Berks Eats–Sweets.” invitational exhibit. December 29 – January 16: Mary Button, Coggins Award Recipient. Finally, keep your ISO setting to 800 or less. For best results use a tripod or beanbag to steady your camera for long exposures. ........................................................................................ Tips for advanced users: Are you aware that an evening life drawing workshop is a perk available to all members who are interested in honing their skills at figure drawing? Unfortunately, very few members are taking advantage of this opportunity, and the attendance is such that this workshop could be in danger of dissolving. The time is 7:30 to 9:30pm Thursdays at Yocum Institute, Studio A. Cost for model is only $5. Artists can use medium of their choice. The building has other activities during this time frame and the area is perfectly safe. Hope to see new faces! 1. Advanced users may want to invest in a light kit with umbrellas. 2. Use a set of photographer’s grey cards to help establish a custom white balance and/or for calibrating the white balance in the processing stage. A cheap set of Vello brand cards can be obtained from B&H Photo & Video online. 3. If you have a camera that can shoot in RAW, choose that setting instead of JPEG and process the picture using PhotoShop’s Adobe Camera RAW or Lightroom for the truest color. (continued next page) 6 39A East Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, PA 19512 Thursday through Saturday 11am-3pm Through November 28: “From the Studio: Marilyn Fox Paints Her World,” a solo exhibition from the director of the Freyberger Gallery, Penn State Berks. December 4 – January 9: “December Members and Friends Annual Exhibition,” classroom gallery featuring artwork of Kutztown University art students. Please support your evening figure drawing workshop! Doelp, 81, of Reading, passed away, Monday, October 5th, while on vacation in Southport Island, Maine. He leaves behind his wife, children and grandchildren. Paul felt like the heart of the Thursday morning portrait workshop. He was funny and kind and always so delighted others enjoyed doing this art, too. Paul took great pride and pleasure in organizing the modelling sessions and was very good at meeting the needs and expectations of a demanding group of artists and models. He loved people and making portraits was one of his favorite art themes. Fakes, Forgeries and Frauds The Reading Museum recently put on a fascinating show, The Intent to Deceive, starring five notorious art forgers: Han van Meegeren, Elmyr de Hory, Eric Hebborn, John Myatt and Mark Landis. In most, but not all cases, these were talented artists frustrated by the lack of appreciation. When you consider the world art market in which only a very few artists ever command high prices -- alive or dead -- and toss in greed, and opportunity, you have a recipe for a possible forger. I was struck by the “Monet” that greeted me as I entered. The label says, “John Myatt, b. 1945, Charing Cross Railway Taken from the Savoy, 2011. Oil on canvas, in the style of Claude Monet.” Myatt is given credit for painting the work, without points for originality. The first case, Han van Meegeren, 1889-1947, specialized in forging Vermeers. He developed a technique to replicate the look and (continued on back page) 7 BAA Membership Show at the Highlands feel of centuries old oil paint by mixing in Bakelite, an early form of plastic. He would then bake the painting in an oven, and the resulting paint was as hard as if it had dried for centuries, passing the tests available at the time. Elmyr de Hory, 1906 - 1976 likely inserted over 1000 forgeries into the art market. Many have not been exposed. He immigrated to the US after WWII, posing as a deposed Hungarian aristocrat selling off his art collection. His charm aided his ruse. He cleverly displayed in his home a portrait of himself and his brother as children, signed by a prominent painter of the time. Of course he forged it, but it gave the impression of a noble birth. One of the richest ironies of the exhibition is a Time magazine cover from Feb. 21, 1972, with a portrait of the “Con man of the Year, Clifford Irving.” The portrait is painted by Elmyr de Hory, not yet exposed as a con man himself. Eric Hebborn,1934 - 1996, started as a restorer. His own natural style harkened back to the Renaissance, and he soon learned he could make more money with his “drawings from the Renaissance” than from selling them as his own work. John Hyatt, b. 1945 forged over 200 modernist paintings. 120 are still on the market. Following his unmasking, he has been the most successful at making a commercial success. He is currently represented by a gallery in London, where he commands prices of 30k and higher per painting. Plus he is in demand as a speaker at universities. Mark Landis was not motivated by money. Rather he donated fakes he made to museums for appreciation and attention. He was dogged by mental illness most of his life. 8 The BAA Membership Show has been arranged with The Highlands. Take advantage of this non-juried exhibition opportunity and spend some time with your BAA friends at the opening reception (The Highlands supplies refreshments).
